Zombie (1979)

Fulci Lives!
16 July 2003
Time to pay hommage to Lucio Fulci..

The movie is pretty good. It does have an interesting plot although it is strange that voodoo would cause someone to turn into a zombi. I think that is using ones enhanced ignorance of other religions to turn it into something of evil. I have investigated voodoo just for curiosity sake and it seems like another other religion. Anyway. I digress.

The special effects are advanced in considering when this came out... In the 70's, it was rare for a movie to be so overtly violent. I did happen (See Taxi) but gorefests like they have today were rare items at best.

There was talk that Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento had it out for each other from the get-go. I can see why. They both, in a quasi-sort of way, have the same artistic directing ability... or ... it can be seen as more creative than most US horror movie producers today.. At least in my opinion. There are exceptions. I do respect Fulci and Argentos' work a tad bit more than Romeros simply for the fact that they are not American and can throw components out that are strange to myself being a pretty straight-laced American. I do think in general, that Fulci and Argento are very gifted and *very* unappreciated, or at least in the American culture.

I would give Zombi or Zombi 2.. whatever you call it....... an 8/10 as for as zombie genre films go.
