The Office (2005)
love it
I love this show! I feel it really hits home for anyone who has worked in or currently has an office job. The random slow moments and getting up to go to the vending machine just so you can get up form your desk. I can totally identify with that. I think the cast is really amazing. They work really well together as an ensemble. I like how they are all really normal looking to. It makes it seem more realistic. I'm glad that the American version has taken it's own direction and given the smaller characters more story lines and back stories. I loved the British version, but I like the American version as well. The both capitalize on the humor of their countries viewers. I hope they keep rolling out the tales about the gang at dundermifflen I love this show!
Captivity (2007)
ending change
I saw this movie at a test shoot. I thought it was alright. I think it is good that the main character is played by someone who isn't emaciated. She actually looks like a real person, although she is playing a model. There was not as much gore as I would have thought. I read they are re-shooting parts to make it more gory. I think the set is really cool. It looks like a cellar but it has a lot of random technology in it. The two people who are captured scratch messages back and forth to each other with the lighting it is a cool visual effect. I thought the twist was played out well, I think if the movie was a bit faster paced it would have worked better. I think it was worth seeing, but i'm really curious to see what changes they made I heard the changed the ending which I think could be really cool.
300 (2006)
a little vulgar
I'm not sure this movie was as good as all the hype is making it out to be. I think yes visually it is very strong. I thought it was animated when I first say the preview; I didn't realize it was real people until I was watching the film. I think it captured the epic sentiment it was going for. The speeches made by the characters were powerful, and the acting was good. But, there were parts of the film that dragged; I found my mind wandering a little bit. Another problem I had were the graphic sex scenes. I really didn't think they were necessary. A lot of younger kids were in my theater and it just didn't seem appropriate or needed to show the strength in the relationship between the king and queen.
I liked that the queen is a strong character. It is good to see strong female characters especially since they are often overlooked in history. I like that the king really respected her opinion and looked to her for advice. I think this movie is definitely worth watching, but I don't think it will be one of the best films of the year.
Marie Antoinette (2006)
good not great
Shedding some light on to the life of one of the most famous spenders in history, I thought this film was OK. It was interesting to see how the french royalty lived, and the decadence was amazing, but the story was a little lacking. I found myself getting a little board. I would have liked to see a little more character development, I still feel like I didn't really get to know the king and queen. The costumes and the scenery were the best part. They looked amazing, Versailles is gorgeous. All the dogs, and cakes, and just food and parties in general were so amazing, I can't imagine living like that. Also, I was confused about the affair; there didn't seem to be any sneaking around, were we just supposed to assume that the king knew a didn't care. I thought this was fairly entertaining, but with a little more of a plot it could have been much better.
The Abandoned (2006)
Good Horror
With the mysterious backdrop of Russia as the setting for "The Abandoned" I was expecting an entertaining eerie thriller, and it certainly delivered. From the first scene of the film the mood was set with the gray colors and the old look of the city in Russia. The isolation of the main character Marie played by, Anastaia Hille, is made evident by the detached air she brings to every scene. It is almost like she is constantly in a dreamlike state, which is a good foreshadowing of what is to come when she unlocks the haunting secret to her past. It is clear she feels something is missing from her life, even though she has a daughter of her own, we can see from a short phone call their relationship is less than close. Marie has come to Russia to look at a property she has inherited, it has been ABANDONED for forty years, she can only find one person brave enough to take her to this mysterious farm tucked away in the rural woods of Russia. When she gets there things only seem to get worse. She is left stranded by her driver and the house is in bad shape. One of the best parts of this film is how the house is soo creepy. The set designer did a great job of making it feel scary. It's very Dark and dilapidated. I was surprised when I actually screamed at one part in the theater. I think this movie is the best Horror I've seen in a while.
An American Haunting (2005)
such a better film than his last one
How did this director make such a better film than his last one? Based on a book of the same name from Brent Monahan, directed and adapted by Courtney Solomon (Dungeons and DragonsI know, it's unbelievable, how could that guy make such a better film.) Fantastic film! The twist in "An American Haunting" was unexpected and intelligent ............................. After this movie was over I was reflecting back on the whole film in the light of what was revealed to me only at the very end. The one thought that both excited and disturbed me most was the thought of how evil John Bell must be. Dungeons and DragonsI know, it's unbelievable, how could that guy make such a better film?
Eve's Bayou (1997)
lyrical genius
for some reason when thinking of the film 'eve's bayou' the phrase i find floating thru my thoughts it 'lyrical genius.' this movie has such rich characters and was filmed with such depth and poignancy that it is affects me almost as if it were something written. the difference is that with the written word i am the one responsible for creating the world and defining its existence. films are usually thought of as a medium that is more direct and controlling in the images one leaves with. yet somehow this movie manages to be accessible enough for the viewer that i left almost believing that it was of my creation. due, significantly to the accessibility of the actors in the roles.
