A Dog's Breakfast (2007)
Brilliant
You have to see this film. I mean what more can I say, it's just so funny your sides will split! Well written, great actors, gorgeous mutt. The perfect combination.
I was lucky enough to attend the London screening of ADB at the beginning of February 2007, with Mr David Hewlett, his sister Kate, fiancé Jane and producer John Lenic from Stargate in attendance to answer questions after the show. It was a great idea - a sort of 'book tour' for a film. Really made it into an event to remember
If it only goes straight to DVD - BUY IT! Whichever venue it is released in, do your untmost to see it.
Well done David for your directorial debut - gonna be a hit.
Roll on the next film
Deadwood (2004)
Thank you HBO - Slight spoiler
Brilliant
I almost didn't watch the first episode of Deadwood. Nothing in the reviews grabbed my attention, I couldn't imagine Ian McShane as anyone but Lovejoy, especially an American, and I only recognised him and Brad Dourif, but I caught a repeat a few days after the premiere. Although the first few episodes were slow, introducing the main characters, I was intrigued.
After three episodes I was hooked. The casting is impeccable, story captivating and the look perfect. I am not an American and I was not alive in this era, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of the writing, but I can fully imagine it being like this.
Al Swearengen is a convincing, multi-layered villain becoming and I commend Ian for his portrayal.
Timothy Olyphant was a revelation, but it took me a few episodes to figure out why I recognised him (Scream 2 , Go, Dreamcatcher). As Seth Bullock, he gives a very complex, strong, mesmerizing performance. He and Molly Parker (Alma Garrett) seem to have real chemistry. Their discomfort in their mutual attraction is poignant. I look forward to great things from Tim in the future.
Robin Weigert is superb as Calamity Jane, a loyal, kind-hearted, caring, insecure tomboy with a drink problem. She makes me laugh, but she can also be very moving.
Brad Dourif, Molly Parker, Powers Boothe, Keith Caradine, Paula Malcomson, William Sanderson and many others bring a rich, varied, outstanding set of characters to life.
There are three episodes left to air as I write this. I cannot wait. Thank you HBO, for putting this terrific series on the air.
Dreamcatcher (2003)
Bad bad bad
I am a great fan of Stephen King and I love the book Dreamcatcher. Although I had heard bad reviews, I didn't think it could be a terrible movie. How wrong I was.
This film bears almost no resemblance to the book, the casting is a mistake and the story makes no sense. I took three people who hadn't read the book to see it and not one of them knew what was happening. I kept hoping it would get better, right up until the last scene. It didn't.
What was with the stupid English accent?? And Morgan Freeman's eyebrows??
All I can say is, give this film a wide berth. A big disappointment. Read the book.
Go (1999)
I like it WARNING - SLIGHT SPOILERS
I have a thing for Timothy Olyphant (thank you Deadwood), which is really the only reason I bought this film. I had no fixed idea of what it was about and I was pleasantly surprised. It has its flaws and is not for everyone but I found it very enjoyable.
The cast are strong; I had not heard of Sarah Polley (Ronna) or Nathan Bexton (Mannie) before this film, but they both deliver top performances. William Fitchner is unnerving as the cop seemingly hitting on the two gay guys. Scott Wolf (Adam) and Jay Mohr (Zack) are convincing as a gay couple having problems. The four friends on the Vegas trip is my least favourite part of the film, as I find the characters unrealistic and shallow, but it moves fast and is funny in places. My favourite scenes are Ronna and Claire's dealings with Todd at the beginning and end of the movie. I'm biased. Any film in which Tim is half naked is good in my book. His character, Todd Gaines, may be a drug dealer, but he is not one-dimensional.
He is scary and dangerous, charming, confident and forward, whilst also being nervous and vulnerable around Claire. Not your normal, run of the mill bad guy. A very sexy role.
