Death Proof (2007)
good, but probably Tarantino's weakest effort
I did like this film but i felt that the dialogue scenes leading up to the killings was too long and at times boring, it should be able to get going within ten or fifteen minutes.
I do like tarantinos clever camera work and settings, it makes a change from watching just a normally filmed movie.
The action scenes in the film are very good and although there are only two great moments in the film (the first lot of girls getting killed in the middle of the film, then the other lot getting attacked by stuntman mike at the end) it is worth watching it just for these alone because Tarantino is excellent when it comes to action, kill bill is a very good example of this and the violence in this film was just as inspiring, especially the blonde girl getting bounced up and down to death by stuntman mikes death-proof car.
I do like the unpredictability of the film as well, when I first saw it I wondered how he was going to give the blonde girl a lift and kill the other girls at the same time. Then later when stuntman mike is attacking the girls they get the upper hand and go after him and even though this was happening I still thought that stuntman mike would come out on top but they got him and the sudden ending was a big surprise.
So in closing, DEATH PROOF is an OK film for what it is but it is probably Tarantino's weakest film in relation to the previous films that he has directed, so six out of ten.
Les Miserables (1978)
a very entertaining piece
i first saw this in about 1999 and i thought i was brilliant. i have never read the novel and i haven't seen any other film adaptations but this one is good enough for me. i might watch some other film versions of this in the future just to see how they compare but i think this is really good.
FIRST - it doesn't rush into things. it takes it's time to explain why valjean was placed in prison and leads us up to the events to follow TWO - all of the actors are very good, especially the leads, Richard Jordan is superb as Valjean and Anthony Perkins is excellent as Inspector Javert, a very tenacious character who has nothing on his mind but the apprehension of Vajean, so much so he even argues with officers above him to stay on his case.
THREE - it's a good chase movie. Every now and then through the film Valjean's freedom is threatened and the viewer has the sense that he may be captured at any time. this effect tends to wear off on repeat viewings but when you see this for the first time it is very suspenseful. this film may be nearly two and a half hours but it isn't boring at all.
FOUR - very realistic. i like the way this handles the time periods, not only can you watch the main story and enjoy it but you can get a sense of how things were in the late 18th and early 19th century. in today's terms there was nothing, no cars, no TV or radio, no computers and you get a sense that if you were living in that time period it would be very boring indeed.
FIVE - this is so good you don't want it to end. this may sound weird to some but the first time i watched it and i saw the credits coming up i thought, 'is that it?' i didn't realise that it's two hour and 17 minute running time was up, i was so engrossed with it, i realise that javert was dead and so valjean's apprehension was no longer imminent, however, i just feel that it could have gone on a few more years and have him into a few other adventures, perhaps until his death almost.
if you haven't seen this, then do so. this gets 10/10
Space (2001)
superb documentary
space is probably the best documentary i have ever seen and Sam Neill presents it brilliantly.
FIRST - the graphics are superb, realistic, when you see the documentary it almost feels as if the makers went out in a high speed space ship and filmed space themselves with a camera
SECOND - the series is entertaining, i think it can appeal to anyone, even people not interested in space will like it.
THREE - it's easy to understand. everything is explained very simply so that children and people who know nothing about space can expand their knowledge in a very short space of time (3 hours)
FOUR - it's not too long. space is vast and there is an infinite amount of information that scientists have on space, telling it would take hundreds of dvds and thousands of hours. this series condenses most of that information into just one DVD disc and three hours, spread over six- 30 minute episodes, so you can watch it bit by bit at your convenience.
excellent. see this 10/10
Braveheart (1995)
one of the greatest epics ever made
i must say that i am very surprised to find that this film is currently ranked no. 96 on IMDb and that it gets 8.3 out of 10. i think that this film deserves at least 9 out of 10. and ranked 96, is that all it gets? it should at least be in the top ten, i don't know if it's the best film ever made but it's certainly up there with the best. this film has everything, the music score is great, the actors are great (some of them i've never even heard of before and never seen since, but they're good anyway) and the story is extremely well done, even if it is historically inaccurate. the film is so good that the three hours go by ever so quickly and the fight scenes are good and bloody, normally fight scenes in other films are boring and/or hard to follow but this isn't. what's really good is the battle of wits between king edward (longshanks) and william wallace. it's almost like a game of chess on film, wallace controls the Scottish and the king controls the English and what's really amazing is the sense that without their leaders each country would be lost, as longshanks says' they're sheep, merely sheep, easily dispersed if we strike the shepard.' i could be here all day just telling you why this film is so good but if you've already seen it then you already know, if not then get it because you will keep it, trust me. i haven't seen mel Gibson's latest work, apocolpyto but if it's half as good as this then it will be excellent.
The Love Bug (1969)
still good after all these years
i first saw this film in 1989 when i was 8. i enjoyed it immensely and having taped it off TV i would watch it on a regular basis. Now, most things that i liked as a child i can't stand now but i do still like this. i liked it as a child and i still like it now at 25. probably one of the few things that have stood the test of time with me, i usually go off things very quickly. this is quite superior to most of Disney's other films in that it is good for adults as well as children, in fact this was probably the only Disney film i liked as a kid (bedknobs and broomsticks is an exception) i usually preferred Disney's cartoons as opposed to their films i have to give this a 7 out of 10 far better than it's three sequels, although Herbie goes to Monte Carlo is nearly as good
Goldfinger (1964)
bond three is number one
i have seen all 21 of the James bond films loads of times and after going through them over and over again i have come to the conclusion that this one is the best. i first saw this in about 1990 when aged 9 and i thought it was the best film i had ever seen. (at the time) i had taped it when it came on TV and i liked it so much i had to watch it over and over again, after i first saw it i watched it once a day for about a week. i had seen about two or three other bond films before and although i liked them this one was far better. i made it my business to see all the other bonds, not realising that there were 16 at the time but when i got round to seeing them all, although they were good in their own way they couldn't come close to this (except for about two that i can think of). up to this point each bond film was better than the last, it's a pity this didn't continue to be the case because although thunderball is alright it doesn't come up to the standards of this one. goldfinger wins because, when you compare it to other bond films it stands head and shoulders above them, although a couple of other bond films aren't far behind. although some things seem far-fetched (oddjob crushing the golf ball etc) it doesn't matter. it is entertaining and fast paced, especially for a film over 40 years old, it still holds up well today. as far as bonds go to this day goldfinger has never been bettered and may never be.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
probably the best western ever made
i first saw this film in about 2003. i had seen A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE on the television and i thought they were really good so i decided to buy them on DVD. Searching the shops for them i found that they came in a box set with a third film, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. I hadn't seen THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY at the time but I liked the first two so I thought that I would buy the whole box set, as that was all that was available at the time. What I didn't realise until after I watched all three was how great THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY was and I thought that the first two were good. it turned out that THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY was the best of the three. THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY was probably the only film I had ever bought on DVD without having seen it before and I'm SO glad I did. This film is excellent and although i have seen it many times it still stands up well after multiple viewings. it may be nearly three hours long but it is never boring. all the elements work so well (music, acting, dialogue, setting etc...) i can't really find fault in it. i liked it so much i bought the special edition DVD just to see the extra footage incorporated into the film. if you've not seen this, then rent it because i guarantee you'll soon be buying it shortly afterwards
