Forever Knight: Blood Money (1995)
Simple, yet timeless story
Greed was, and will always be part of human nature. This episodes shines a light on what people do for money. Cheat, steal, murder... Even though Lacroix ist not exactly what you'd call selfless, he's right when, in one of the backflashs, he tells Knight that material wealth is a burden. There's a limit of what you need for living, what you need to be happy and a limit from which more money only causes problems. Question is, whether or not one realizes when the third limit is reached.
Simple story, but interesting. Entertaining and well told. As long a we have money, this one will never be out of time.
Forever Knight: Blind Faith (1995)
One of my favorite episodes
One of the series' best episodes, at least in my opinion.
The main story is about Jodie Frazier, a blind police officer suffering from Multiple Sklerosis, whose seeing eye dog is being brought over by a Karouche. The dog is found to be a threat to humans and for the secret of the vampire community, so Nick Knight has no other choice than to put him down. But the dog manages to escape, returning to Officer Frazier's home and turning her into a vampire, curing her disease in the process. Since Jodie Frazier, being a healthy (if that term applies here) vampire herself now, can adequately take care of her dog, Detective Knight no longer has a reason to kill him.
The episode is one of my favorites, because it shows someone suffering from a severe disease, but still going on with her life as good as possible, instead of just giving up. It takes a strong personality to do that and I find this story (partly because of my own situation) quite inspiring. Even if a cure is impossible, or at least improbable, keep going and make the most of whatever is left of your life. Who knows, what the future has to offer?
Forever Knight: Dark Knight: The Second Chapter (1992)
Good start and introduction
This and the previous episode are mostly a remake of the movie with Rick Springfield. Introducing the main characters ( Nicholas Knight, John Schanke, Captain Stonetree, Natalie Lambert ) and some of the characteristics of vampires like immortality, night vision, the ability to fly, some kind of hypnosis and a little bit of Detective Knight's history.
Showing Knight's struggle to make up for his cruelties and kills in the past, it also tells the story of someone trying to overcome an addiction, which in one way or another, most people can relate to. Whether it's blood, drugs, alcohol, food... it is rather easy to imagine how hard it can be to maintain control over one's needs and desires.
Another major part of the story is the complicated relationship between Knight and his creator, Lucien Lacroix. He rejects him just as much as his violent past and hates him even more for taking a chance of becoming mortal again from him, when he destroyed one of the two jade cups that were supposed to be a cure for vampirism.
Forever Knight (1992)
An all-time classic...
I first saw the show sometime in the late 90's. I watched every episode and later again, whenever I got the chance. These days, with modern streaming services, it is much easier, since I can watch it whenever I want to. For those who speak english: Watch it in English, because some jokes / puns z won't work if you're watching a translated version.
What makes the show one of my absolute favorites ist the "realistic" part of the show. The main characters have to deal with everyday problems like racism, drug abuse, murder,... but also disabilities, Aids, medical research,... or "banalities" like burocracy, being overworked or frustration.
It also makes vampirism more believable, since it combines supernatural influences / explanations with medical / physical approaches. Things like immortality, supernatural strength and flying... put aside, it could just as well be a story about a detective suffering from XP, EPP or a similar disease, which would also cause him to avoid daylight. The vampire storyline adds just what it takes to make it a more exceptional sort of crime show. This is a thing that got a little lost after the 2nd season, when it shifted more the the supernatural side.
I too hoped for the show to continue (in the 90's) but after more than 20 years, chances got very slim.
I'd say that the show will always be worth watching it, because it's well made, entertaining and timeless so to speak, because the basic elements of the stories haven't changed much in the last 50 years and I'm quite sure they won't for at least another 50.
It also makes you think about some things in life (if you follow the stories more closely) like family, friends, politics, and many others.
Bottom line : Watch it! Most of you won't be disappointed.
Dracula Untold (2014)
Just missing one thing...
I've watched this movie several times now, and I'd say that it's one of my favorite vampire movies. Mostly because it is not just good vs. Evil. There is always a point in life, where someone needs to decide what's best, and that won't always be a simple choice. I like the idea, that Dracula isn't just a monster, but rather a man that chose a dark path to save his people. I bet and hope, that most people will never have to make such a choice in real life. But for this movie, it's a great basis for the story. I'm only a little disappointed, because they didn't give it a sequel. Especially since they hinted it at the end of the movie.
Midnight Sun (2018)
Funny, sad and serious
I've watched that movie several times over the last years. Probably it is my own condition (similar to EPP) that makes it one of my favorites. It isn't quite as severe as XP, but it's still taking its toll on me.
The storyline is - besides being a romance - a reminder that life could always be worse and that you should try to make the most of it as long as you possibly can. Even if you're struggling with a disease that takes away many things that make life worth living, find something you can do and enjoy. Anything - or anyone - that makes you happy and keeps you focused on the good things in life.
What I really can't understand is the need of some people to see others suffer. It would have stretched the movie, but it wouldn't have helped the story.
Bottom line: you should definitely watch this movie, because it's well made and it's so much more than just a mere teen romance movie. And it raises awareness for the existence of rare and very restricting diseases.
