The Next Best Thing (2000)
Even Rupert Everett can't save this turkey!
Wow! Once again, Madonna goes to particular pains to show us that as an actress, she's a decent singer. As I was sitting there listening to her lines of dialogue, I kept thinking is this some foreign film, and her lines are being dubbed by someone who is just getting acquainted with the english language? Also, I found it hard to find sympathy for any of the characters since as written they were self-centered and churlish. Benjamin Bratt had zero chemistry with our heroine. Interesting love scene at the car wash, though. Is John Schlesinger getting his ideas from Ally McBeal these days?
Holy Smoke (1999)
a worthy mess
Somewhere inside this mess of a movie, there's a good movie trying to get out. As per usual, both Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel have the presence of mind to pick intelligent, thought-provoking projects, but lack the capacity to bring Jane Campion's "vision" to complete fruition. It is never fully explained why one sexy babe would make this supposedly successful de-programmer go bonkers. Interesting and enjoyable moments throughout do not add up to much, that makes sense, at least.
