The Babadook (2014)
Not Scary
Okay, here's my criteria for a scary movie: SOMEONE IMPORTANT HAS TO DIE NEAR THE BEGINNING!!! Nobody dies, not scary ... simple as that. My wife thought it was laughably ridiculous, I thought it was "ite." If you want to see a really scary movie go see Alien without knowing what it is about (like I did with this one). That was a truly scary movie. I never felt like this one really took off. However, I will admit I may not be the one to ask: I never felt that The Exhorcist was scary either. I don't understand why 98% of the critics on RottenTomatoes thought this was good (not only good but 8.2). I gave it a 5 and that sounds about right.
My First Mister (2001)
Surprisingly good flick
Lately I've seen a number of "good" movies (IMDB 7+, Rotten Tomatoes 70%+) yet this one, seen on a Monday afternoon on cable beats most of them. I never heard of it until I happened on it accidently. I like Leelee Sobieski so I thought I'd give it a chance. I like quirky, funny, sentimental movies... so this one fit right in. The chemistry between R and J was excellent... better than many so-called love stories I've seen (and I only go to see movies rated 3 out of 4 or above ... still I see over 60 new movies each year). The end may have been a bit much but overall a very enjoyable introspective into the epitome of we all hope friendship should be. 7 out of 10.
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
One of the finest movies ever made.
I've been watching this movie ever since it was first released in 1993. Everytime I happen upon it I have to stop and watch (usually until the end). I watch 70+ new movies every year and yet this stands as one of the most poignant and beautifully made movies I've ever seen. Don't worry if you don't understand the title ... watch this movie ... you will understand much more than just the title in the end.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Half HORRID ... half decent
I NEVER walk out of a movie. However the first half of this one made me very tempted to break that string. BORING, not funny, the only thing it had going for it is Teri Polo is very cute. However, the second half had some funny moments. My wife and I see about 60 movies a year and this is the worst movie we've seen in a number of years! My rating: First half ZERO, Second half = 6 ... overall 3 (out of 10).
