Speaking of Sex (2001)
YAWN
I saw this film tonight at the Chicago film festival's closing night. This film is one of the unfunniest and unoriginal I've seen in a while. It even stole a gag from Austin Powers(another unfunny movie). The film stars James Spader, Melora Walters, Jay Mohr, Bill Murray and Lara Flyn Boyle. The plot was so contrived and pointless I can't even remember what it was about. The plot is there to basically fuel all the unffuny sex jokes and gags. I hated it and so will you. it is Boring with a Capital B. Johnson. Major. Out.
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
The Best Film of the Year!
This is bar-none the best film of the year. It's hauntingly poetic and beautifully photographed. Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich give Oscar calibre performances, bet on Dafoe for a best actor nom. I recommend viewing Nosferatu(1922) before you watch this film so you can better understand the film. This is the greatest film I have seen in a long time. Everything about this film grabs you from the moment it starts till the final haunting frame. I cannot stress enough how terrific Dafoe's portrayal of Max Schreck is done. Do yourself a favor and see this film. It is THE picture to beat come Oscar time.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
The Greatest Movie Ever Made
Pulp Fiction is a story of three intertwining crime stories told in a non-linear plotline. Tarantino weaves his stories together in a brilliant fashion. The film has sometimes been criticized for being to violent even though most of the violence is done offscreen, with elements of humour. It is a twisted entertaining thrill ride that will keep you (sorry for the cliche) on the edge of your seat for the entire 2 1/2 hours. There's never a dull moment. The dialogue is witty and clever, the humor is twisted and it is the best film I have ever seen. Trantino is a natural born filmmaker with vast knowledge of pop culture an will be remebered as one of the great storytellers of our time, and Pulp Fiction will be remebered as one of the greatest films ever made.
Dinosaur (2000)
Great Visuals, but disappointing
Going in to Dinosaur I was hoping for the best. The trailer made me want to see this film and I was expecting it to be great. The visuals and animation are amazing and it's a very nice film to look at. However it lacked character and story development and was far too short (1 hr. 15 min.). The plot was uninteresting and more than half the film takes place in the desert. It is a movie geared towards little kids and there is no doubt in my mind they will love it and it will be a huge success, but as for anyone over age ten, they will be disappointed. ** out of *****
