Legendary’s Monsterverse has found a new master of disaster. The studio has tapped Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical outing in the franchise following March’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Sputore came up from the world of commercials, and as a features director helmed the sci-fi movie I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank. The film bowed at Sundance before hitting Netflix in 2019.
The new Monstervese feature is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans. The script comes from prolific genre scribe Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Sputore’s hiring follows news that Adam Wingard would not return after directing both the latest installment and Godzilla vs. Kong (2022). Upon the release of Godzilla x Kong, Wingard told The Hollywood Reporter he hoped to return for another film to complete a trilogy,...

Avengers, re-assemble!
Variety has reported that Shawn Levy, reliable director of “Night at the Museum,” “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” is “in the mix” to helm the next “Avengers” superhero team-up for Marvel. In late July, his promised-to-be-potty-mouthed R-rated “Deadpool & Wolverine” will hit theaters and, clearly, Marvel’s leader, Kevin Feige, liked what he saw.
Marvel is in desperate need of a course correction after some wobbly entries like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “The Marvels,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.” There was once a time when the Marvel opening logo was enough to print money and create cultural resonance, but those days have begun to wane, due in part to a glut of Disney+ streaming shows and the fact that “Avengers: Endgame” really did seem like a nice place to end the story. The word “end...

Director Shawn Levy may be sticking around the Marvel Cinematic Universe a bit longer.
Levy, who helmed this summer’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” is being eyed by Marvel — though it’s in very early stages — to direct the next “Avengers” movie.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who made 2021’s Marvel movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” was previously supposed to direct the fifth “Avengers” movie, but he backed out in November 2023. That movie, which is scheduled for May 1, 2026, also does not currently have a title. It was originally named “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” but lost that title after Jonathan Majors, who was cast as the time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror, was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend. After this untitled “Avengers” movie, the next will be “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for May 7, 2027.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in dire need for rejuvenation. In an era where ‘superhero fatigue ‘ is the buzz word, if the MCU has to scale the peaks that it once did, it will have to undertake some herculean efforts. Creators will have to think out of the box while retaining the core that made the fans resonate with the movies. It is in this period that Simu Liu’s critically acclaimed Shang-Chi is all set to begin filming after a gargantuan delay in 2025. While some fans would be baffled, it doesn’t come as a shock to many. After all, this isn’t the most delayed MCU sequel out there.

Who's ready to start their midweek, Hump Day grind on a bit of a mixed note? The good news is that I'll never again use the phrase "Hump Day grind" because, frankly, that just sounds unbearably filthy. Okay, the real good news is that Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures continue to be in the business of making money and remain intent on keeping their kaiju-sized MonsterVerse movies going. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the next installment will have to do so without the involvement of director and writer Adam Wingard.
For those who've enjoyed the franchise's pivot towards rampant silliness throughout both "Godzilla vs Kong" in 2021 and its sequel, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," it appears that the MonsterVerse must change course once again. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made a solid $432 million when it opened in 2021. While that may look like a disappointing number on paper, the box office was still struggling massively in the closing months of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regardless, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, it remains one of Marvel Studios' best-reviewed Phase 4 titles and put Simu Liu on the map. Unfortunately, the character has been sidelined ever since and it's now been close to three years since we last saw Shang-Chi on our screens.
Destin Daniel Cretton is expected to helm a sequel - rumoured to be titled Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time - after moving on from Avengers 5. However, he's currently busy working on Disney+'s Wonder Man series, leaving us to wonder just how much of a priority the Shang-Chi follow-up is.

Marvel Studios and Disney have several projects in the works, despite recent statements about scaling back due to mixed results. Among these projects is the sequel to ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ Development on the sequel began in December 2021, with director and writer Cretton and star Liu expected to return. Liu has expressed interest in further exploring his character’s journey and his role in the MCU.
However, as of July 2023, Liu was unsure about the sequel’s production timeline, mentioning it was scheduled for release after ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ which had been pushed back to 2026 and renamed in the meantime.

After being in limbo for a long time, the live-action adaptation of Naruto has been officially confirmed to be in production.
Lionsgate, the studio behind the project, has roped in Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on the Marvel film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” to direct as well as pen the upcoming Naruto live-action film.
Joining Cretton in bringing Naruto to life are producers Jeyun Munford, Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu.
Masashi Kishimoto, the mangaka of Naruto, expressed his enthusiasm on Destin’s involvement in the film, stating, “When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo.

Naruto, one of the most popular mangas of all time, is headed to the big screen.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who co-wrote and directed the Marvel Studios movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been tapped to pen and helm a live-action adaptation of the title for Lionsgate.
Cretton will also produce alongside Jeyun Munford through his company, Hisako. The duo join Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, who are behind the studio’s upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands, and Jeremy Latcham (Dungeons & Dragons).
Created by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto was a coming-of-age story focused on a young and enthusiastic ninja named Naruto Uzumaki who wants to grow up to be the leader of his ninja village but also happens to have the spirit of a nine-tailed demon fox inside him. Simu Liu’s Marvel debut was one of the most anticipated ones, since the movie, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the first one to be helmed by an Asian hero. Shocking everyone, the movie turned out to be one of the best MCU movies ever to be made largely because of the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton.

Since then, fans of the director have been looking forward to having him on board for Shang Chi 2 and other Marvel flicks, especially when superhero movies have been performing so dreadfully. Late last year, trouble seemed to be afoot in the Marvel Universe. “Shang-Chi and the Legend Of The Ten Rings” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, scheduled to helm “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” suddenly dropped out of the picture. Cretton cited his many obligations to Marvel Studios and that he had already taken on too much. Cretton was already scheduled to direct the untitled “Shang-Chi 2” sequel and produce and oversee Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series, “Wonder Man,” and directing a huge ‘Avengers’ film for 2026 on top of it all would be impossible.

Simu Liu’s hosting reel keeps on growing.
The “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star’s past hosting gigs include the Time 100 gala and the Junos. He also hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2021 and has guest-hosted “Jimmy Kimmy Live!”
Now, he’s taking the reins of the People’s Choice Awards.
“The PCAs are unique,” Liu tells me. “It’s not an awards show about an academy that votes behind closed doors. I think it’s important that we have that, but that’s not us. That’s not the PCAs — it’s inclusive by nature.”
Fans vote for the PCAs online or by using their phones. “It’s meant to be celebratory. It’s meant to feel positive,” Liu says. “That isn’t to say that we’ll never make a joke that doesn’t make fun of someone. But we’re not really out there...

This time around, Pedro Pascal is Reed Richards Aka Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby is Sue Storm Aka the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn is Johnny Storm Aka the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach is Ben Grimm Aka The Thing. While Pascal’s casting has been rumored since November, Marvel Studios confirmed his casting — and the rest of the team — in a Valentine’s Day-themed tweet (an “X”?) on Wednesday; the other three names are brand new.
This version of “The Fantastic Four” will be directed by “WandaVision” helmer Matt Shakman with a script from Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. It was almost the next MCU gig for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts,...

“Closing Dynasty,” which received its world premiere at Berlinale earlier this year, tells the story of Queenie, whose life isn’t like that of other kids her age.
“To an adult onlooker, she might seem lost among the towering New York skyscrapers, but 7-year-old Queenie has a clear goal: to make money,” reads the logline. “Hustling for donations, collecting bottles, impressing passers-by with her crafty salesmanship – she’ll do whatever it takes. But we can’t help but wonder why she’s working so hard on a school day. Ultimately, Queenie must confront the realities that she can’t control, in a powerful turn that highlights the resilience of kids in a very grown-up world.”

One of the biggest upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects was just hit by a major setback. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," has officially exited the director's chair for the upcoming film. Cretton was previously announced as the director of the film last summer, but now, more than a year later, the director's chair is empty once again.
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios and Cretton agreed to a mutual parting of ways with "The Kang Dynasty." The movie is still nearly three years away (assuming it sticks to its current release date) and things feel pretty uncertain with the project right now. As a result, Cretton will focus his attention elsewhere and the studio will, presumably, look for another director to fill the void when the time comes. This follows recent reports that Jeff Loveness ("Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania") is also...

Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has dropped out of directing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” an individual with knowledge told IndieWire.
Cretton remains attached to direct the sequel to “Shang-Chi” and is also at work as the co-creator of the Disney+ series “Wonder Man” also for Marvel Studios. He’s an executive producer on the show and directed the first two episodes.
The individual says Cretton’s exit is amicable. Cretton will resume shooting “Wonder Man” after Thanksgiving, and as Deadline first reported, he’s even said to be in talks to direct future Marvel movies.

Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer directing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” TheWrap has learned. While he will not helm the next big MCU team-up flick, he remains at work on the Disney+ series “Wonder Man.” And fear not, he’s also still developing a sequel to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
The move comes days after Marvel and the Walt Disney Company take stock of the poor performance of “The Marvels,” which earned just $110 million in its global debut amid mixed reviews and comparatively indifferent word-of-mouth.
The Brie Larson-fronted superhero sequel was not Marvel Studios’ first underperformer amid the 33-film, 15.5-year franchise. Heck, “The Incredible Hulk” earned $265 million on a $150 million budget a month after “Iron Man” launched the MCU in the summer of 2008. However, the release comes on the heels of comparatively underperforming titles like “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” along with softer-than-usual...

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has departed “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” an upcoming superhero adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Kang Dynasty,” which is positioned as the “Avengers: Infinity War” of this current MCU era, isn’t scheduled to open until May 1, 2026. It will be succeeded by “Avengers: Secret Wars” a year later, on May 7, 2027, which will tie together the sixth phase of the long-running franchise.
Unlike the two-part saga of “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” which were filmed and directed back-to-back by Anthony and Joe Russo, Cretton was only hired to direct “The Kang Dynasty.” There’s no director on board yet for “Secret Wars.”
Cretton isn’t permanently parting ways with the MCU. He’s still on board to direct the sequel to his 2021 blockbuster “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and he’s currently working on the Disney+ series “Wonder Man” for Marvel Studios.

“The Marvels” didn’t crash and burn at the box office this past weekend due to superhero fatigue. Nor was it the lowest opening weekend in MCU history because fans were rebelling against the female-driven ensemble — the gender makeup in North America over the opening weekend was 61% male and 39% female.
Instead, the film limped to a $46.1 million opening weekend due to a number of factors including declining trust in the Marvel brand, all of which speak to an existential challenge for Marvel Studios: Make Marvel special again.
Superhero movies within the Marvel and DC universes are now as execution-dependent as other franchise titles. The low opening for the Brie Larson-starring sequel shows that an MCU movie is no longer an automatic must-see event, meaning fans won’t show up just because it’s “the next Marvel movie.” That’s a problem, considering many of Marvel’s upcoming titles,...

"The Marvels" arrived in theaters this past weekend and the box office posted by the film has led to much warranted discussion. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel," opened to just $47 million domestically, well below expectations. It also only took in $63.2 million overseas, meaning the movie had a global opening of $110.2 million against a budget said to be anywhere between $220 and $250 million -- before marketing. That's bad news for Marvel Studios and Disney, to put it lightly.
That said, an opening weekend in the $50 million range shouldn't have to immediately spell disaster. Any movie that can pull in more than $100 million around the world in three days clearly has a great deal of appeal and a sizable audience. The bigger problem here is that the movie business is a game of relativity. A movie like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" can...

"The Marvels" is not getting off to a heroic start at the box office. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sequel to 2019's massive hit "Captain Marvel," arrived in theaters on Thursday and, while it's early, the numbers are not encouraging. Based on what the film took in during preview screenings, it now looks like director Nia DaCosta's superhero blockbuster is going to wind up with one of the smallest opening weekends in the history of the MCU. Brace for impact.
With showings that started at 3 p.m., "The Marvels" took in $6.6 million in Thursday preview screenings, per The Numbers. Much could happen between now and Monday morning but those numbers suggest an opening weekend well below original projections, likely in the mid-$50 million range, give or take. Early box office tracking had the film earning as much as $90 million on opening weekend. Even in a best-case scenario at this point,...

Marvel Studios is back with its first new movie since “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and, should the release schedule hold, its last new movie until the third “Deadpool,” which doesn’t come out until next July.
This being a Marvel movie, there are characters old and new to keep track of, as our heroes jet across the galaxy in an attempt to thwart a massive threat to our world and countless others.
Here’s a complete cast and character guide for “The Marvels.” The only folks we have left out are the ones you definitely don’t want spoiled.
Marvel Studios Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is a former test pilot turned superhero, whose origins were traced in “Captain Marvel” and who was last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” lending a hand in what is now canonically referred to as the Battle of Earth.

Shane Black's 2013 superhero film "Iron Man 3" is handily one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It depicted a beleaguered and emotionally wounded Tony Stark working through his battlefield trauma by building multiple Iron Man suits in his lab, and trying his hardest not to fight. That plan is interrupted by the appearance of a vicious terrorist calling himself the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), a ring-wearing murderer who is behind a series of deadly bombings around the world. Tony, in a fit of rage, gives out his previously secret home address on national TV, instigating an immediate attack from the Mandarin that destroys Tony's massive Malibu home. Oops.
Tony, naturally, goes on a worldwide hunt to find the Mandarin and bring him to justice, which he eventually does. In one of the McU's cleverest twists, however, it is revealed that the Mandarin is fake. The threatening terrorist...

What's Netflix thrown up for us this week? "Knights of the Zodiac" of course! What is that? Well, I'll be honest, I had no idea either. But I've taken a quick look-see and as it turns out, this Japanese fantasy film is proving pretty popular with Netflixers stateside.
A live-action adaptation of Masami Kurumada's manga, "Saint Seya," "Knights of the Zodiac" stars Japanese actor Mackenyu, alongside Madison Iseman and Nick Stahl. The film is also noteworthy for reuniting Sean Bean and Famke Janssen almost 30 years after they shared the screen in "GoldenEye." Co-produced by Toei and directed by "The Witcher" illustrator/producer Tomasz Tomek Bagiński, the film also features stunt and fight choreography from former Jackie Chan stunt team member and the man behind the action in Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," Andy Cheng.
Starting to sound like it might be ok, right? Well you...
