Paul Giamatti, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan are joining the third “Downton Abbey” feature film. Giamatti, who recently scored an Oscar nomination playing an ornery teacher in “The Holdovers,” is reprising his role as Harold Levinson, the bother of Elizabeth McGovern’s Cora Grantham, a part he played in the TV show that spawned the film franchise.
No word yet on who Richardson, Nivola, Beale and Froushan will portray. Nor are there any details about the plot, but this being “Downton Abbey” you can expect silverware to be polished to a high gloss, tables set with military precision and a mad dash to find an adequate number of ladies maids to service all the guests for this or that soiree.

Although there’s no distributor yet confirmed for Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development, nearly completed epic Megalopolis, we’re starting to get a sense of when we may see the $100 million epic. The director himself recently indicated it’ll be out in a few months, but according to a new report, a fall release is more likely.
In a round-up of Cannes possibilities, Deadline notes the movie is targeting “a big fall IMAX release,” which means a Venice or North American festival (i.e. TIFF or NYFF) could be more likely than a visit to the Croisette. The article also notes it’s unlikely that Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be stopping by Cannes, but George Miller’s Furiosa, Audrey Diwan’s Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds,...

2023 may not have been an excellent year for movies, but in spite of everything stacked against it (read: greedy conglomerates run amok), it turned out to be an excellent year of movies. While the fallout of the recent work stoppages will be felt for time to come, some of 2023’s losses will prove to be 2024’s gains, as much-anticipated but strike-delayed films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Drive-Away Dolls,” and Luca Guadagnino’s horny tennis drama “Challengers” have all secured fresh release dates in the first half of the new year.
Those titles will be joined by some of the most promising Hollywood blockbusters in recent memory, must-see work from some of the world’s greatest auteurs, and huge swings from essential artists ranging from new voices like Jane Schoenbrun (“I Saw the TV Glow”) and Duke Johnson (“The Actor”) to venerated masters like Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Mike Leigh...

Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver will star in “Master Gardener,” a new crime thriller from Paul Schrader, a master of the genre.
Schrader is on a bit of a hot streak after scoring an Oscar nod for his screenplay for “First Reformed.” Astoundingly that marked his first nomination despite penning some of the greatest movies ever made. His new drama, “The Card Counter,” debuts at the Venice Film Festival. He’s previously plumbed the dark depths of the soul in works like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.”
In Schrader’s next outing, Edgerton will star as the master gardener of an American estate who is forced to confront his dark past. Weaver will co-star as his employer, a wealthy dowager, who demands that Edgerton’s character take on her wayward and troubled great-niece as a new apprentice. Chaos ensues…or so says the official longline.

This morning, actress Vanessa Kirby received her first Golden Globe nomination for her shattering turn in Netflix drama, Pieces of a Woman.
“I feel, more than anything, just so honored that this was my first lead role,” she told Deadline, “and that this is the film that I’ve been nominated for.”
In the “deeply personal” film directed by Kornél Mundruczó, from a script by Kata Wéber, Kirby plays Martha, a Boston mother who goes through a yearlong journey of mourning, after her home birth ends in tragedy.
For the actress, the recognition serves as a tribute to all the powerful and resilient women she’d spoken with, in the course of making the film, who had shared with her their own experiences with loss. “Because honestly, every day throughout filming, it was always about the women that had sat with me and told me their stories,” she said. “So,...

She premiered her feature debut The Sleepwalker at Sundance back in 2014, and has been busy as a co-scribe working on all three of her partner’s features in The Childhood of a Leader, Vox Lux and The Brutalist. With Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby toplining, Mona Fastvold‘s sophomore film was in the official competition at the Venice Film Festival. Bleecker Street Media landed the rights to The World to Come and have pegged it with a February 12th release which means Sundance could be the lieu of the North American premiere. In his review, our Nicholas Bell called this “a period piece which blazes with fierce intelligence and intention as much as it waxes poetically before dangling precariously into despair.”…...

When 2021 kicks off, Vanessa Kirby will be in Poland working on Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist while in the streaming world (and whatever arthouses that do remain open) we’ll be taking in the Lido offerings of Pieces of a Woman and The World to Come. One title that might pop up at Sundance is a project the actress filmed before the Venice Film Festival comp pair. Adam Leon broke out big with his debut, the rare SXSW followed by Cannes (Un Certain Regard) Gimme the Loot (2012) and then 2016’s Tramps (we got to interview him at TIFF) before lassoing this third project which the plotline has been kept away from the curious public.…...
