After more than five years, Netflix's long-awaited reimagining of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is finally coming to fruition in February. The live-action series will take the beloved Nickelodeon animated show and attempt to bring it to life in a new medium for a new generation. Or, presumably, the same generation of fans that loved the original and who are hoping to capture that same magic. While the final verdict has yet to be determined, Netflix used every tool at its disposal to bring the airbenders, earthbenders, waterbenders, and firebenders to life. That included borrowing a few tricks learned from another one of the streamer's big hit shows, "Stranger Things."
Entertainment Weekly recently published a comprehensive preview of the live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series. In speaking about bringing the firebending abilities to life, it was explained that "Stranger Things" season 4 had a direct influence on that front. The same...

I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. “Run the Burbs” star Andrew Phung is widely considered to be one of Canada’s biggest sneakerheads. But his former “Kim’s Convenience” co-star Simu Liu is no sneaker slouch either, having famously rocked some ultra-rare Jordans in “Shang-Chi”. So whose kick game reigns supreme?
If you ask Phung, it’s not even a debate: Kimchee all the way.
“Oh yeah,” says the actor when asked by Et’s Carlos Bustamante if his shoe appreciation is above and beyond Liu’s. “I think he would even admit to that. Look, Shang-Chi is wearing some Jordan 1s in the movie, I respect that. But even he would admit to it.”

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star Simu Liu is known for his star-studded acting career, his extensive stock photo modeling, his amazing humour, but a lesser-known talent of the star is his musical prowess.
As we celebrate, Asian Heritage Month, we take a look at the 34-year-old’s roots in music that stretch all the way back to his childhood.
How It Started
Liu’s musical origins stretch all the way back to his teen years, when he joined the short-lived high school group LX4.
“I was a part of a boy band when I was 12. I mean, nothing ever happened. It was called LX4 because all of our names started with L,” he later recalled to “Q'”s Tom Power in 2023.

In just a few short years, Simu Liu has gone from Canadian sitcom actor to international movie star.
Despite how big his fame grows or how many achievement he racks up in Hollywood, for Canadians, he’ll always be ours. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, let’s run down just a few of the many reasons everyone loves Simu Liu.
1. He Manifested His Own Destiny
It’s not everyone who can make a dream come true with a simple tweet, yet Simu Liu made it happen. Way back in 2014, before he was even cast in his breakout role in “Kim’s Convenience”, Simu Liu issued a tweet targeting Marvel, asking when the studio was going to get around to introducing a superhero of Asian descent. Five years later, he was announced as the star of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.
Hey @Marvel, great job with Cpt America and Thor.

If you’re an aspiring TV writer in Canada, it’s quite possible your script is in Anthony Q. Farrell’s slush pile. The Canadian showrunner is always reading projects and helping new writers get their start, and now that he’s got a few weeks of downtime before his summer projects fire up, he’s finally sitting down to read them.
“I feel like I’m in a Zen place right now,” he tells Variety. “But I think the summer’s going to be bananas.”
Farrell, who got his start writing for Greg Daniels on “The Office,” has helmed shows like “The Parker Andersons/Amelia Parker” and “Overlord and the Underwoods.” Slowly but surely, he has become one of Canada’s most prominent showrunners and an industry leader in telling authentic and diverse stories on screen. The sharp increase in Asian representation in movies and TV shows has been the stuff of celebration in recent years, and for good reason. But while "Crazy Rich Asians" may be a caricature of extreme wealth, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is utterly weird (in all the right ways), Netflix's "Beef," starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, is grounded in a relatable reality. Even if things spiral way out of control as the series progresses.
There is more than one way to "be a man" in modern Asian American culture.
Growing up in the 1980s and '90s, it was rare if I saw another Asian male face on screen. And if I did, he was most often a single-faceted secondary character. He'd be the token Asian among a group of predominantly white friends, like Ke Huy Quan's Data in "The Goonies." He probably had an accent and was usually nerdy.

The global impact of traditional tattooing and the need to end its stigma is explored in upcoming feature-documentary “Treasure of the Rice Terraces,” directed by Filipino-Canadian Kent Donguines.
The film sees Donguines embark on a journey of self-discovery and record the oral history recounted by 106-year-old Indigenous tattoo artist Apo Whang-Od, who was recently an unlikely cover star of Vogue Philippines.
The film explores how the old practises in the Kalinga region, once banned and despised in Philippine society, have now evolved into a chic and in-demand type of body art that has become a source of pride and belonging for many Filipinos. It also delves into the issues of stolen mummified bodies, cultural appropriation, stigmatization, and discrimination faced by tattooed individuals.
Now shooting in Manila and the mountainous Kalinga region, the film is directed by Donguines and written by Donguines and Zlatina Pacheva (“Run the Burbs,” “Kim’s Convenience”).

Almost everyone wishes they could win the lottery. Winning could change your life significantly, revealing things about the people closest to you. Keeping quiet about your winnings is an excellent way to roll, especially if you don’t want people coming out of the woodwork for a piece of your action. Once everyone knows you’ve won, harassment is an inevitable byproduct of your financial windfall. What if, upon winning, it was legal for someone to kill you and claim the prize for themselves? That’s the premise for Grand Death Lotto, a new comedy from Paul Feig starring John Cena, Awkwafina, and Simu Liu.

Top Canadian Broadcasting Corp. programmer Barbara Williams didn’t flinch from touching Canada’s third rail — acceptance of the country’s increasing cultural diversity and inclusivity — when she pitched local advertisers at her Winter Upfront presentation on a “reset” so the public broadcaster can remain relevant to audiences.
“We need to re-introduce ourselves to those who already know us and then to make an introduction to those who currently don’t have a relationship with us. We want you to see CBC as your thing … as a Canada thing. Because it’s not how Canadian you are or aren’t. It’s who you are in Canada,” Williams, CBC’s executive vp of English services, told media agencies and marketers in Toronto on Nov. 30.

Canadian public broadcaster CBC has pulled back the curtain on its new strategic direction, detailing its diverse new content, an entertainment consolidation and rebrand, and a new Fast channel in conjunction with its news division.
At the Nov. 30 event at Toronto’s Massey Hall, hosted by “Kim’s Convenience” and “Run the Burbs” star Andrew Phung, the broadcaster explained that all entertainment content, including streaming, linear and podcasts, now lives under the CBC Entertains umbrella. Combined, CBC Entertains and CBC News is the company’s two-pronged approach designed to engage and amplify new voices in Canada — for all Canadians.
“Everybody knows CBC News, it’s where Canadians turn whenever there’s a big story,” CBC’s executive VP Barbara Williams tells Variety. “We do an amazing amount of entertaining content across TV, CBC Gem, [radio app] Listen, podcasts. And somehow that collection of entertainment content wasn’t quite as clearly understood. So we...

Simu Liu will return to emcee the 2023 Juno Awards after making his hosting debut for Canada’s music awards in Toronto earlier this year.
Charlotte Cardin was the big winner at the 2022 Junos, Canada’s version of the Grammys, as she picked up four trophies. But Liu, best known as the Marvel superhero Shang-Chi, arguably captured the biggest buzz with his “I am Canadian” speech, a satirical take on a classic beer commercial, and sang his own rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated’ single while playing a guitar.
He will be back hosting the 52nd annual Juno Awards in Edmonton on March 13, 2023, organizers said on Wednesday. “If you thought my rendition of ‘Complicated’ was good, just wait until you hear my Nickelback cover,” Liu said in a statement.
The Junos, produced by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, will air on the CBC network nationwide.
