The world of special effects makeup often feels like a dying art, with studios and streamers increasingly pursuing CGI and digital FX over practical artistry. Now, there is absolutely room for both styles and different films call for different methods, but gone are the days where the average moviegoer can recognize the name of a special effects makeup artist. Diehard fans are, of course, the exception to the rule, and there's at least one name that horror fanatics all know by heart and are stoked as hell to see on an end credits crawl: Steven Kostanski.
For the uninitiated, Steven Kostanski is one of the most fascinating voices in genre cinema working today. His films "The Void" and "Psycho Goreman" are both well-loved favorites, he finally gave the "Leprechaun" franchise a solid film with "Leprechaun Returns," and Kostanski's...

“Crimson Peak” is a movie directed by Guillermo del Toro starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston.
Guillermo del Toro is one of those directors who, in a world where everything seems to be mass-produced, has managed to forge his own signature style and aesthetic, captivated a loyal audience. Once again, he is not going to disappoint with “Crimson Peak” that not only features fantastic actors but is also an aesthetically first-rate piece of work.

“Crimson Peak” is one of those films that place Guillermo del Toro somewhat close to Tim Burton’s universe, very close to Coppola’s “Dracula” (1992), but still holding its unique touch of a universe filled with strange creatures, wonderful photography, and exceptional cinematography.

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy seems to have had a rough run at the box office. Based on the TV show of the same name, the film followed Gosling as a stuntman who gets involved in a conspiracy involving the lead actor of a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. The action comedy was directed by David Leitch, who last helmed Bullet Train.
Gosling’s film reportedly only earned a meager $145 million against a $127 million budget, making it a box office bomb. While the film received positive responses from fans and critics, author Stephen King seemed to have had a mixed reaction to the film. He reportedly disagreed with a review of the film that called it ‘great fun’.

Sometimes horror filmmakers go far from merely scaring the audience by shocking images and loud sounds and turn their films into pure art. These visuals are often beyond the imaginable limits as they both please the eye and creep you out even more.
Here are 7 horrors, picked by Reddit due to their outstanding visual part.
1. The Cell (2000)
Indeed, this sci-fi horror “was a visual feast”, as voiced by Redditor @Matthew-_-Black. The story of a comatose serial killer put in an experimental virtual reality treatment in order to locate his last victim is here enhanced by sleek futuristic design elements.
2. Mandy (2018)
Nicolas Cage’s flick about an enraged man on his journey towards bloody revenge is full of spectacular depictions of a nightmarish cult life and their supernatural and psychedelic experience. It’s highly praised for its unique red-colored visual style.
3. Suspiria (1977)
“It's so vivid and colorful,” admits @BrokeFartFountain about Dario Argento's cultish film.

Crimson Peak may be the quintessential Guillermo del Toro film, as it compresses his fetishistic attention to detail into a single looming set where creaking floorboards, scores of dying moths, and the frequent intrusions of mutilated ghosts are just pieces in the giant dollhouse where the director merrily plays. The combination of gothic ghost story and harlequin romance doesn’t break new ground for either genre, but the intensity of Brandt Gordon’s art direction and Kate Hawley’s costume design reinforce the innate connection that period romance and horror share in how these genres so purely express their most profound ideas through ornate style.
Amusingly, the focus of the film’s first act—the gamesmanship of high society’s courtship rituals playing out in well-lit parlors—is no less tense than the story’s eventual retreat into the dark confines of Allerdale Hall. The most dominant sound effects in...

4K is about to get a lot darker, as director Guillermo del Toro teased over the weekend that four more of his films will be hitting the format within “the next year or so”. They are: his 1993 debut Cronos, 1997 follow-up Mimic, 2002’s Hellboy, and 2015’s Crimson Peak, which is one of del Toro’s most visually striking features.
In an X post from yesterday, Guillermo del Toro wrote, “4 new 4K transfers coming up: Crimson Peak, then Cronos, Blade II and finally Mimic all in the next year or so. I am done with the color timing of 3 out of the 4.” Note that these releases will not be coming out simultaneously or in chronological order.

There have been a whole host of movies featuring Frankenstein’s monster. The first appeared in 1910 and the most famous and best is still 1931’s Frankenstein. Its sequel in 1935 – Bride of Frankenstein – is another classic but there’s been probably more misses than hits since then. In 2013 Frankenstein’s Army had some cool ideas but didn’t hit the heights it perhaps should have while the following year’s I, Frankenstein was a fun, if throwaway, action horror. At the beginning of its third season, "Star Trek: Discovery" went through something of a soft reboot, with fans often debating about what worked and what did not. Thanks to a complex season-two story about a malevolent machine intelligence, the U.S.S. Discovery was forced through a portal in time, depositing it in the year 3188, about 900 from their starting point. The crew of the Discovery found the future to be bitter and broken. It seems a galaxy-wide cataclysm — nicknamed The Burn — destroyed every active starship a few centuries earlier. The last remaining scraps of the Federation went into hiding while a vicious crime syndicate, the Emerald Chain, rose to power in its absence. The Discovery, equipped with now-ancient technology, had to fight the Emerald Chain, locate the Federation, and attempt to help a galaxy they didn't understand.

'Historical horror' is not a term that's been especially popularized, but it's most effective when describing the delicious combination of historical events and fictional horror. This subgenre has been quietly enjoying a great run during the last decade or so: not only have there been several movies that brilliantly mix detail-heavy period settings with creepy goings-on but there have been a number of TV shows delving into historical horror with much success, such as Showtime's "Penny Dreadful."
Latest on the scene is AMC's "The Terror," a series that so far has been able to vary its period setting, themes, and even tone thanks to being anthologized season to season. After the first season, which was based on author Dan Simmons' novel "The Terror" (hence the series' name), the second season went on to tell an original tale set in and around the Japanese internment camps in America during WWII.

At best, Guy Ritchie's reputation errors on the side of eclectic. The British-born director has embraced a multitude of genres, breathing new life into crime thrillers in the early days of his career before banking a hard left to experiment with historical fiction, romance, and war. The films got bigger, and slicker, as Ritchie progressed as a filmmaker. He's worked hard to launch franchises, to build heightened worlds that run on intrigue and irreverence above all. And though not every project has worked out in Ritchie's favor, his sure-footed style has always been a heady joy to watch.
Sure, Ritchie's over-the-top style is at times easy to poke fun at. He's more or less made the same movie over and over, regardless of genre. "Sherlock Holmes" is not unlike "The Man from U.N.C.L.E," nor is "Snatch" all that far off from "RockNRolla." But there's something...

Back in March 2023, the news broke that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was in the midst of casting a new film version of "Frankenstein" that he was slated to write and direct. At the time, it was said that Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth were set to star and that Andrew Garfield was to play the Monster. According to actor Doug Jones (who has worked with del Toro on several feature films), the director had long been at work on a "Frankenstein" movie that was meant to visually resemble Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein," a heavily illustrated printing of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel made by Marvel Comics back in 1983. At the time of Jones' comments, however, he was slated to play the Monster himself, as the actor commented on what "my look" would have been. That Wrightson-inspired version eventually evolved into the version mentioned above, which is being produced for Netflix.

Charlie Hunnam revealed to Entertainment Tonight while promoting his new film “Rebel Moon” that he was heavily considered to play Anakin Skywalker in George Lucas’ “Star Wars” prequel trilogy. While child actor Jake Lloyd played Anakin in 1999’s “The Phantom Menace,” a time jump for 2002’s “Attack of the Clones” and 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith” required Lucas to cast an older actor as Anakin. Hayden Christensen won the part, but Hunnam said he also met Lucas in person to discuss the role.
“I had forgotten that too, but yes, I did. I got to the point where I was meeting George Lucas, you know?” Hunnam said. “I don’t think he meets a lot of actors. I think it was probably, maybe, two to three actors they were considering. I don’t remember much about it.”

Gothic stories generally evoke the faded elegance of the Interwar years in “Atonement” and “Rebecca” or the dark forces hiding behind 19th-century exteriors in “Crimson Peak” or “Jane Eyre.” It’s quite another thing entirely to build a Gothic romance out of Pringles cans, LiveStrong bracelets, and other unfashionable debris of the ‘00s. But that’s what makes writer/director Emerald Fennell‘s “Saltburn” so startling: There’s never a risk of “Downton Abbey”-ifying the English country house at which Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) spends a golden summer holiday with his new Oxford bestie Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi).
Fennell captures the power and the grandeur of her characters’ desires (and the accompanying dangerously possessive obsession) while constantly roasting them, too. While the low-rise jeans and middle parts of the late ‘90s are making a return, nothing from 15 years ago is ever cool; the film’s music, costumes, set design,...

Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. The Life of Chuck is three separate stories linked together to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Flanagan said, “Now I’m back to LA to edit (cannot wait), and start the long road of expectation setting that The Life of Chuck isn’t a horror movie.” The...

Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” is a feast for the eye, with its sophisticated sense of style and set decoration. But to tell the story of Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) and his bride, Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), the look of the performers were the opening entry point. For hairstylist Cliona Furey, period pieces are her speciality; she’s also worked on opulent features like Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” and “Nightmare Alley.”
Shooting the movie in just 30 days though put all the below-the-line team in a frenzy to get everything accomplished on time and under budget, and hair was no exception. At one point, working with Spaeny, Furey was helping the actress glue on her wig when the power in Furey’s trailer went out. “It was a 30-day shoot so everything was rush, rush, rush and a lot of daylight dependent scenes. So they were waiting for me when the...

As of now, I think my love for Guillermo Del Toro as a filmmaker is well established. I adore the man and his work. He plays in my favorite sandboxes, with monsters, vampires, kaiju, giant robots, and in the gothic world whenever he feels like it. The man is after my heart with every single movie he makes. In 2015, he went ahead and asked himself, what does this girl love that she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of lately? And he answered with a gothic love story with ghosts in a Hammer-esque setting in a mansion with walls that bleed and memories imbedded in its construction. So, if you didn’t guess from all that, this...

As “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” continues to dominate the box office, one three-screen arthouse movie theater in Milwaukee will also show films starring several of Taylor Swift’s past boyfriends.
Cara Ogburn, artistic director of Oriental Theater overseer Milwaukee Film, brainstormed the idea in response to the requirement that theaters can only show “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” Thursdays through Sundays.
“What if we show all Jake Gyllenhaal movies,” Ogburn, who was interviewed by The New York Times, recalled suggesting initially as a joke. “True counterprogramming.”
Thus next week, the theater will screen “Twilight” starring Taylor Lautner as werewolf Jacob Black, “Dunkirk” featuring Harry Styles formerly of the boyband “One Direction” and now doing just fine on his own as a solo musician and actor, “Crimson Peak” starring Tom Hiddleston before he took on the mantle of the MCU’s Lokie and several Jake Gyllenhaal features — “Zodiac,” “Enemy,” “Nocturnal Animals...

Actor Tom Hiddleston is making his return as Loki in the second season of his eponymous show ‘Loki S2’. This time, the Norse God of Mischief has found himself a new family with the Time Variance Authority (Tva).
Speaking on this, the ‘Crimson Peak’ actor said: “One of the things we talked about is how Loki always struggled with family in the MCU, but he’s found a new family in the Tva, and he’s found, in its breakdown, an understanding of himself.”
He further added: “Having his sense of self opened up, broken down, and rebuilt by Mobius and his colleagues at the Tva, and also his connection with Sylvie, there’s a new capacity, a new awareness to make connections with other people.”
“He realises that those connections are all that matter in the end, and they’re connections that he wants to preserve. But now the stakes are higher.

Guillermo del Toro’s boundless imagination, from the gothic horrors of “Crimson Peak” to the creature-feature-inspired “The Shape of Water,” has been cultivated by a lifelong love of cinema. The Mexican filmmaker proudly wears his influences on his sleeves, while championing the past and future of moviegoing and movie-making. Just take his latest projects.
There’s the stunning, stop-motion “Pinocchio” reimagining, which is leagues better than Disney’s straight-to-streaming competitor — far too slick for its own good (no matter how much Tom Hanks tried). Mexican-born auteur Guillermo del Toro hit the Oscar jackpot with his fantastical love story “The Shape of Water” (2017), which took home four prizes including Best Picture and Best Director. But that’s just one of many eye-popping fantasies he has crafted throughout his career. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of del Toro’s films, ranked worst to best.
Del Toro made his feature directing debut with the Spanish-language horror drama “Cronos” (1993), which established him as a maker of dark, visually-stunning fright-fests. The film wrote him a ticket to Hollywood, where he helmed the creepy chiller “Mimic” (1997). Over the next two decades, he would bounce back-and-forth between mainstream American productions and more personal stories in his native language.
It was for “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), a fable about a young Mexican girl escaping into a terrifying fantasy realm during the falangist Spain of 1944, that del Toro reaped his first Oscar bid for Best Original Screenplay.

No matter your current opinion of superhero movies in general, you've got to hand it to "Blue Beetle" director Ángel Manuel Soto -- he sure does have great taste in Easter eggs.
While all modern comic book movies are chock-full of references to deeper lore and obscure characters ("Blue Beetle" is no exception in this department), Soto cuts a little deeper. In a film about a young Mexican-American man who becomes a superhero with the backup of his Mexican family, the director cheekily inserts a sly reference to a lesser-known film from one of the greatest living Mexican filmmakers. And it's the only film he actually made entirely in Mexico, no less.
The director is Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro and the film is "Cronos," the filmmaker's 1992 feature debut. And while this could easily be seen as another nod to Mexican culture in a movie full of similar nods, this one cuts a little deeper.

Even if you don't know his name, you've probably seen the work of Javier Botet. Specifically, if you've watched a horror movie in the 21st century, you've almost surely seen him. Or rather, you've seen his creatures. After scaring the pants off audiences worldwide with his terrifying work in the modern classics "Rec" and "Rec 2," Botet became horror's go-to "monster guy," sliding into the unsettling skins of ghosts, demons, zombies, aliens, and even non-Pennywise incarnations of the titular creature in "It." On the small screen, he played creatures in "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Game of Thrones." On the big screen, his credits include "Mama," "The Conjuring 2," "Crimson Peak," "His House," "Insidious: The Last Key," and so much more. He's the century's definitive monster performer.
Born with Marfan syndrome, Botet has utilized his physical differences to pull off characters who feel like walking, actually-there special effects. He stands 6' 7" tall and he's impossibly thin,...

In Bram Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula," the titular Count travels from his remote castle in the Carpathian Mountains to a new home in England on a ship called the Demeter. He travels with multiple coffins filled with earth and is sealed in a coffin of his own. Weeks after departing, the Demeter drifts into Whitby Harbor. No one is on board. Instantly, readers knew the story: Dracula -- requiring human blood to survive -- sneaked out of his coffin at night to pick off the Demeter's crew one by one. The reader is left to imagine their harrowing experience.
In André Øvredal's upcoming, long-gestating film "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," however, one no longer needs to imagine. The film is set entirely on the Demeter, depicting the crew discovering their dwindling numbers and the slow realization that a demonic vampire may be on board. The film stars Corey Hawkins,...

Ever since audiences ran screaming from the premiere of the Lumière brothers’ 1895 short Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, the histories of filmgoing and horror have been inextricably intertwined. Through the decades—and subsequent crazes for color and sound, stereoscopy and anamorphosis—since that train threatened to barrel into the front row, there’s never been a time when audiences didn’t clamor for the palpating fingers of fear.
Into the new millennium, horror films have retained their power to shock and outrage by continuing to plumb our deepest primordial terrors and incarnate our sickest, most socially unpalatable fantasies. They are, in what amounts to a particularly delicious irony, a “safe space” in which we can explore these otherwise unfathomable facets of our true selves, while yet consoling ourselves with the knowledge that “it’s only a movie.”
