Tom Holland gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making his debut in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. His interpretation of both Spider-Man and Peter Parker struck a chord with fans, effectively capturing the essence of the iconic character from the comics.
While Holland’s career may be facing some challenges at the moment, there are rumors circulating that he needs to be part of a major Paramount film. If these rumors hold true, it could potentially provide a significant boost to his career, which is somewhat floundering right now.

The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

From starring opposite Hugh Grant aged 11 to joining the X-Men, does nothing faze the actor? Well, there was one scene for his latest role ...
Preparing for his role as Emperor Peter III of Russia in the TV show The Great, Nicholas Hoult wondered if he should go for the accent. The 31-year-old had just finished filming The Current War, a movie in which he played the inventor Nikola Tesla, and it struck him he could, without too much effort, repurpose his Serbian into a passable Russian. Hoult is thoughtful, conscientious, and takes his job very seriously. “It didn’t flow in the right way,” he says, of his stab at Russian, and back he went to the drawing board, specifically to an exaggerated version of his own accent. “I don’t go the full public schoolboy, but I’m very posh – educated but childish.” A new comic antihero was born.

“The War With Grandpa,” a Robert De Niro comedy about the battle between a wily septuagenarian and his grandson over a bedroom, was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2018.
Plans changed after Harvey Weinstein, the indie film producer whose company The Weinstein Company was set to distribute the “Home Alone” knockoff, was exposed as a serial sexual harasser and predator. His fall from power led to the dissolution of The Weinstein Company and plunged “The War With Grandpa” and other films that the studio had expected to release such as “The Upside” and “The Current War,” into a perilous kind of limbo.
Two years after it was intended to hit theaters “The War With Grandpa” finally debuted, although in a markedly different theatrical landscape, one that faces an existential crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Ethan Hawke and Kyle MacLachlan star in Michael Almereyda’s humorous and ambitious film about the under-appreciated visionary
Every historical drama involves some element of pure invention: maybe it happened like this? Perhaps she said it like that? But Michael Almereyda’s biopic of the Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943), is rather more open about this process than most. Ethan Hawke, who also starred in the director’s contemporary New York-set Hamlet 20 years ago, plays the under-appreciated visionary. Now, Tesla has a clean energy company named in his honour, is thought to have predicted the internet age, and has been played on screen several times, most recently by Nicholas Hoult in The Current War. But he died in poverty after alienating his wealthy investors and consequently struggling to obtain the funding to realise his grand visions.

Moviegoers who only know Tom Holland from his fan favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe role of Peter Parker in the “Spider-Man” and “Avengers” movies will be in for quite a shock with “The Devil All the Time,” the upcoming Backwoods Gothic drama from “Simon Killer” and “Christine” filmmaker Antonio Campos. “Devil” casts Holland as Arvin Russell, a local in the remote town of Knockemstiff, Ohio, who is surrounded by a host of sinister and corrupt characters played by the likes of Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Haley Bennett, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska, and Sebastian Stan. Go behind the scenes of Holland’s performance in the exclusive featurette below.

Thomas Edison was often called the Wizard of Menlo Park. Which is to say that most Americans in the late 19th century viewed his patented incandescent lightbulb as a thing of magic, one so otherworldly it inspired the title of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. Yet much like the magician of that fantasy tale, the real-life wizard wasn’t the man behind the curtain; it was Nikola Tesla, the sphinxlike Serbian immigrant who discovered alternating electrical currents and, depending on who you ask, radio waves. If Edison was a wizard, then Tesla was something else entirely—an alien being sent down to imagine the face of the 20th century for us.
These singular contributions inform much of Michael Almereyda’s peculiar idea of a biographical film. Because, yes, despite its many eccentricities, Tesla is very much a biopic, and one just as bizarre as the genius of...

Tom Hanks-starring drama “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” will join a thickening crowd of local and international films heading for Chinese movie theaters in the next six weeks.
The film, about beloved U.S. TV host Mr. Rogers, received investment from China’s Tencent Pictures in the early part of last year and received its stateside release on Nov. 22, 2019 in time for Thanksgiving.
Tencent received censorship approval for the film in early January this year. But it did not previously lock in a release date and was assumed to be awaiting the Oscars ceremony in February – Hanks was nominated as a supporting actor – to firm it up. That strategy was upended by the early arrival of the coronavirus outbreak in China and the closure of all mainland China cinemas from Jan. 23.

If you want to be bored breathless by how Serbian inventor Nicola Tesla (1856-1943) figured into the feud between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over direct and alternating currents, try 2019’s The Current War. It’s biopic trolling at its dullest. Or you may want to consider Tesla, which is both a corrective and a mesmerizing showcase for Ethan Hawke, playing the futurist who harnessed AC to light the eventual spark for our contemporary wireless world. Google searches, a Macbook and a cellphone make anachronistic cameos as Tesla mixes it...

Cinemas in some parts of China have been told that they may now sell up to 50% of their available tickets for each screening and play films over two hours in length without restrictions starting from Aug. 14, local reports and leaked directives show.
Concessions may also now be sold — not to snack on in theaters, but, amusingly, as take-away.
The easing of theater restrictions is a big positive sign for the China box office prospects of Disney’s “Mulan,” which confirmed on Monday it would hit Chinese theaters “soon,” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” which is set to debut in the country on Sept. 4.
Covid-19 has dealt a blow to the global box office dreams of both films, with Disney choosing to forgo theatrical in most markets and release its live-action remake on its own streaming platform.

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

Ethan Hawke headlines the biopic, Tesla, having transformed himself—mustache and all—into the once-overlooked, retroactively-revered early 20th century inventor, Nikola Tesla. The indie offering, directed and written by Michael Almereyda, premiered this past January at the Sundance Film Festival, and will make its general release via IFC Films.
Tesla might initially seem like a historical biopic that’s quickly revisiting a topical well, focused on the electrical engineering achievements of Tesla in his famous involvement in the electricity rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. After all, an impressively-cast movie covering that very rivalry, The Current War, just saw its belated wide release this past October. However, viewers get a meta-minded slap about 25 seconds into the film’s just-dropped trailer, proving that there’s more to it than we thought.
With that set, check out the trailer for Tesla just below.
As the official Tesla logline fully explains of the plot.

One of our most-anticipated films heading into Sundance Film Festival this year was Tesla, the latest film by the always inventive Michael Almereyda. As one can imagine, the director defied conventions finding new territory to mine from a figure (born on this day in 1856) recently captured in other biopics like The Current War. Led by Ethan Hawke and also starring Kyle MacLachlan, Jim Gaffigan, Donnie Keshawarz, and Eve Hewson, the film is now set for an August release by IFC Films, who have debuted the first trailer.
Dan Mecca said in his review, “Tesla plays a lot like Experimenter in its use of minimalist production design in parts (perhaps forced by budget) and exciting flights of fancy in others. Almereyda has been a Sundance mainstay for much of his career and it makes sense. His films are a testament to the independent spirit. Limitations be damned! The messy creativity on display is something to admire.

When it comes to filmmakers with a consistently creative visual style, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is someone who doesn’t quite get the credit that he deserves. On the big screen, he’s helmed unique work like The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, as well as The Current War, while his small screen work runs the gamut of genres. Most recently, he directed the pilot for Hunters, as well as serving as an Executive Producer on the series. As it contends for Emmy attention, Gomez-Rejon was kind enough to hop on the phone to chat about his sensibilities behind the camera, as well as much more. Below you’ll find my conversation with Gomez-Rejon. He was incredibly modest and thoroughly engrossing to chat with. Give it a listen and stay tuned to see how Hunters does in the Emmy hunt… Here is our interview with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

“At the core of 101 Studios, we seek to tell stories that create cultural conversations, which is the same pillar behind the stories that have been told and continue to be told by Sports Illustrated,” said Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios. “Sports Illustrated has covered every major story in sports since the 1950s and, before the Internet, they were often the only publication covering the most famous and memorable stories in depth. Through this new partnership, we have the...

I contend the world changed more between 1875 and 1900 than any other quarter-century in recorded history. From Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone to Thomas Edison’s phonograph and motion pictures, the masses were suddenly able to communi9cate and entertain in new ways. The world shrank and night was eliminated thanks to the light bulb.
It’s a fascinating period and one that has been overlooked until recently. First came, Graham Moore’s The Last Days of Night, a historical novel from 2016 that carefully detailed the battle between Edison and George Westinghouse for setting the electrical standard for America. Of course, alternating current won, but not without losses on both sides.
A year later, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon tackled the same subject matter in The Current War, pitting Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) against Westinghouse (Michael Shannon). In both stories as in history, the mad genius of Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), is a naïve innocent,...

Amazon Prime Video UK used to release a bountiful preview list full of films and TV shows it was planning to add to the service every month, but for some reason it decided to stop doing that, and instead hand out a list of highlights.
Now, as much as we were disappointed by that choice and would rather bring you a comprehensive guide to everything making its way to the streaming platform this month (and every month) we also respect its decision to do so. Also, if you’re anything like us, you get an enormous amount of pleasure from scouring through the scattered madness that is the Amazon Prime Video interface for all manner of gems you swore weren’t there just a few minutes beforehand.
For even as other streaming services toil away on a bottomless pit of original programming and films, Prime is often more likely to...

In his 63 years as a film programmer, Bob Parr had never experienced anything like the current crisis as ticket sales flatlined across the country over the past few weeks.
“All exhibitors and distributors are losing a lot of money,” the Wallis Cinemas consultant told If on Sunday. “Many cinemas have closed because there are no patrons.
“Many small exhibitors make their living in school holidays and barely break even except for blockbusters during the remaining time. They are in the business because they love it.”
Later that day the Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced all cinemas and entertainment venues, registered and licensed clubs, hotels, pubs, casinos and nightclubs will close today.
Exhibitors and distributors had been steeling themselves for that decision after cinemas were shuttered in the Us, the UK and myriad other markets.

Updated: The Australian federal government has ordered all cinemas in the country to close, as an additional measure against the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
The order was made on Sunday evening local time and takes effect from noon on Monday. The measure could remain in place for several months.
The move is part of a stricter package of measures that will affect all venues that are deemed “principal places of socialization.” As well as cinemas, that includes pubs, restaurants, casinos, indoor sports facilities and places of worship. Restaurants are allowed to operate a take-away service only. Schools remain open.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the tougher measures were being brought in because the earlier calls for social distancing were not being adhered to properly. Australia has also previously imposed strict cross-border travel restrictions.
“Unfortunately, because guidelines can’t be followed, then for public health reasons we now need...
