Amazon’s Freevee is dropping out of High School.
The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.
The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.
Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.

Emily Cheever’s career was just getting started.
The 36-year-old began her TV writing career in 2020 as a writers’ production assistant and script coordinator for Legends of Tomorrow before getting hired as a staff writer for ABC’s The Company You Keep. After the drama that marked Milo Ventimiglia’s follow-up to This Is Us was canceled following a single season shortly after the Writers Guild of America strike began last May, Cheever had no job to return to when it ended in September. Like scores of other writers of all levels and backgrounds, she doesn’t know when or where her next paycheck will come from.
“People are scared. I’m trying to go back to bartending,” she says. “A lot of people are wondering what other jobs they can do. I’m close with my old showrunners, and they’re supportive of me, but they’re looking for jobs.

Uncoupled won’t get a second chance at season 2 after all. A year after Showtime rescued the series, they opted to cancel it before they ever filmed a scene. The series, which followed a 40-something man who finds himself surprisingly single and out of touch with the dating world, aired its first season on Netflix in July 2022. The streaming service provider dropped the series six months later.

Showtime rescued Uncoupled after Netflix gave it the boot in January 2023. The network certainly seemed interested in putting in the work needed to bring season 2 of Uncoupled to the small-screen. Darren Star is on the move.
The creator of hits including Netflix’s Emily in Paris and TV Land’s Younger has departed his longtime home at Paramount Global’s MTV Entertainment Studios for a rich overall deal with Universal Television.
Star has a carveout in his new eight-figure deal and will remain showrunner on Emily in Paris should Netflix continue the show beyond its upcoming fourth season. Beyond that, Star will create and develop new series for NBCUniversal’s broadcast network and streamers as well as for outside platforms.
“Darren is a singular voice who has created signature shows for multiple networks and platforms since the beginning of his career, from the hills of Beverly to the streets of NYC to the Champs-Elysees,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, chairman of Universal Studio Group. “As we think about the talent we want to bring to the studios, Donna [Langley] and I often talk about brand-defining storytellers,...

Exclusive: After a decade at Paramount Global and its predecessors ViacomCBS and Viacom, Darren Star is making a move. In a competitive situation, the prolific TV creator of such shows as Beverly Hills, 90210, Sex and the City and Emily In Paris, has signed a big multi-year overall deal at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. No one is commenting on the size of the pact, but I hear it is in the eight figures and in the top tier of premium overall deals; certainly the biggest we have seen since the end of the strikes.
Under the pact, Star will develop and produce new series projects for broadcast and streaming through his Darren Star Productions exclusively for Universal Television. Outside of the deal, he will continue as executive producer/showrunner on his popular Netflix series Emily In Paris, which is currently filming Season 4, if it is renewed...

Dan Amboyer, who played love interest Luke in the series, also reacted to the surprise cancellation on Instagram. “Sad that there won’t be a season 2 of #Uncoupled after all,” he wrote on Friday. “Thankful for my experience, would have loved to see this story go on. Had my eyes set on it as soon as I heard about it, originally. One of my favorite projects (to be a small part of) — and a meaningful moment for me to finally play a gay role on screen. Former Netflix series Uncoupled won’t be going forward at Showtime after all.
The news comes a year after Showtime revived the comedy — which is produced by Paramount Global sibling MTV Entertainment Studios — following a cancellation at Netflix. The decision to scuttle the show comes after some work to rejigger it to fit the sensibilities of Showtime — now known as Paramount+ With Showtime after the premium cable outlet was integrated into Paramount’s flagship streaming platform.
Reps for Showtime couldn’t be reached for comment.
Season two of Uncoupled, which stars Neil Patrick Harris as a man trying to put his life back together after breraking up with his long-time boyfriend (Tuc Watkins), had been slated to film last summer but was delayed during dual strikes by writers and actors. Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks and Marcia Gay Harden also starred in season one.

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

Netflix and Amazon now produce over half of their content internationally, an inflection point from traditional U.S.-centric production to a more diversified and growing global approach.
In an essential presentation as part of the Future Content Trends Report at Content Americas on Tuesday, Guy Bisson from Ampere Analysis showed the undulating shifts in the global TV and streaming industry and outlined the key drivers for change in 2024.
The Decline in U.S. Commissioning and Production
A discernible downturn in U.S. commissioning and production activity has been evident since the latter half of 2022, predating notable industry disruptions such as the strikes. Full year comparison of the number of scripted shows produced for 2023 against the average of the previous two years shows a 38% decline. This trend stems from a combination of factors, including a retreat by streaming services from their previously aggressive content investment strategies. It will result in...

With the recent cancellation of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” after just two seasons, HBO has left the Los Angeles Lakers off on a historic loss. “Winning Time” Season 1 ended with the Lakers’ 1980 NBA Championship; Season 2 zoomed through their 1982 win and ended (now awkwardly) with the team’s crushing ’84 loss to the Boston Celtics.
And that will be that for “Winning Time” — there will be no rematch with the Celtics in ’85, which is when the Lakers finally defeated their rivals in the NBA Finals. There will be no repeat result in ’87 (the Celts defeated the Houston Rockets to win again in 1986), when Magic Johnson won the rubber series against Larry Bird. And there will definitely be no coup de grace in 1988, which cemented the Lakers as the team of the ’80s.

“I think I loved the fact that it was a comedy,” reflect Marcia Gay Harden on what first drew her into the script for her CBS series “So Help Me Todd.” Even though the show seems like a legal procedural, its episodes are always threaded through with hijinks. “Even if Margaret is ostensibly serious, it’s because she’s serious about her work, but in life, her inabilities in life to master technology, her rigidness, and her vanity are really funny and her anger is really funny,” comments the actress about her character. “I Love That for You” will not move forward with a second season at Showtime. The network has canceled the comedy series executive produced by Vanessa Bayer, Jeremy Beiler and Jessi Klein after one season.

Showtime has made a decision on its last remaining current scripted series whose fate had been up in the air, opting not to pick up a second season of comedy I Love That for You. The news comes a year after the Season 1 run of the show starring Vanessa Bayer, who co-created it with Jeremy Beiler. The two serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Jessi Klein and Michael Showalter.
“I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime,” a spokesperson for the network said in a statement. “We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.”
As Deadline reported, there had been an internal effort to get the well-received series renewed. I Love That for You co-star Matt Rogers claimed in December that a second season of the show already had been written.

The comedy series Uncoupled is one of the latest television shows to be impacted by the writers strike.
Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Michael in the series, revealed on Friday’s episode of The View that filming for season two has been delayed. The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this year that Showtime picked up the show after Netflix canceled it following its first season.
“We were going to start filming it in the beginning of July but the writers strike is happening,” the How I Met Your Mother actor said. “So, everything is sort of on pause – go writers, writers strong.”
Harris didn’t confirm when production would resume, but added that “we’re just going to wait until that [writers strike] plays itself out.”
He continued, “Hopefully we’ll be able to start filming in warm weather. We filmed season one in cold weather and it’s less fun to have...

“Emily in Paris” star Lily Collins and the show’s costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi, were both on hand Tuesday night at the series’ For Your Consideration event held in Los Angeles at the DGA theater. But there was a very notable absence: Series creator and executive producer Darren Star.
Star was scheduled to appear alongside Collins and Fitoussi as Netflix ramps up promotion going into the Emmys season, but the “Sex and the City” creator was a no-show. The panel didn’t explain his absence or even remark on it, but it comes amid the Writers’ Guild of America strike that began at midnight on Tuesday. Star is, of course, a longstanding member of the guild.
Along with “Emily in Paris” and “Sex and the City,” Star also created “And Just Like That,” “Melrose Place,” “Younger” and “Uncoupled,” among his many credits.
Representatives for Star didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Anyone growing up in the late ’80s and early ’90s surely remembers the TV show Doogie Howser, M.D. The sitcom made its star, Neil Patrick Harris, a household name. The premise was quite original — it was about a child genius who becomes a doctor as a teenager. Though it was long the role he was most known for, Doogie Howser wasn’t Harris’ first as a child star.

At first, it looked like Uncoupled would just be another Netflix series that was canceled after one season, and that would be it. Sure, shows are saved and picked up by other networks and streaming services more often than they used to, but that can’t happen for all, or even most, of them. However, then Showtime stepped in, and now Uncoupled will continue. “I was pleased,” series star and executive producer Neil Patrick Harris told TV Insider recently of the save (while discussing reprising his How I Met Your Mother role as Barney Stinson on Himyf). “To be honest, I wasn’t ahead of the story very much. I knew that Netflix was not going to pick it up for Season 2. They haven’t had a great string of luck with comedies that run less than an hour, and so that wasn’t a huge surprise.” However, while Harris...

It’s been six months since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his portfolio, and he knows what a healthy swath of Hollywood has said. He’s read the network eulogies and seen the variations on “Rip Showtime” tweets. He’s even sat with folks who have bemoaned his stated plan to lean into franchises, be it more Billions or Dexter. And it would all probably irk him more if it weren’t exactly what he needed.
“People not thinking it’s going to work is the motivation. Like, great, perfect,” he says as he dives into a rotisserie chicken salad.
It’s a rainy March afternoon, and The Terrace at The Maybourne Beverly Hills, which McCarthy has selected for lunch (and lodging), lacks its usual bustle yet still has a smattering of soggy stars like Halle Berry, Jerrod Carmichael and Justin Bieber. Showtime is closing the book on The L Word: Generation Q.
According to Deadline, the series has been canceled after three seasons on the premium cabler.
The news comes two months after The L Word: Generation Q Season 3, which means fans could be left pondering what happened next.
While Generation Q is done, L Word creator Ilene Chaiken is prepping a reboot of the original series for Showtime.
The potential series would be called The L Word: New York and would shift the action to -- you guessed it -- New York.
Generation Q was a continuation of the original series which aired on Showtime from 2004 to 2009.
It followed the lives of Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals), Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), Shane McCutcheon (Moennig), Dani Nùñez (Arienne Mandi), Micah Lee (Leo Sheng), Sarah Finley (Jacqueline Toboni), Sophie Suarez (Rosanny Zayas), Gigi Ghorbani (Sepideh Moafi), Angie Porter-Kennard (Jordan Hull) and Tess Van...

Over the past several months, companies have been in a mad rush to cancel shows that had already been ordered or renewed and remove others from their respective streaming services in efforts to trim expenses from their bottom lines. Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts are front of mind, but Netflix, AMC Networks, Starz, and others have also been guilty of axing and offloading underperforming shows. However, cutting these shows may be a mistake in the long run, at least according to one streaming executive.

Paramount+ will raise its subscription prices in the U.S. later this year.

As Netflix executive Greg Peters takes the co-ceo reins from Reed Hastings, Wall Street, the entertainment industry and consumers will be watching closely to see how he and Ted Sarandos steer the streaming behemoth forward.
A major question for Peters, formerly the company’s COO, and Sarandos, who held the co-ceo title alongside Hastings for almost three years, is whether the company’s new leadership will use the old playbook that powered the company to the top of the streaming world or try to forge their own path.
UCLA professor Tom Nunan, a former executive at NBC and Upn, told TheWrap that one major lesson Peters and Sarandos can learn from Hastings is that they shouldn’t “be a slave to Hollywood’s history and its problem-solving techniques.”

The shakeups at Showtime continue. Showtime’s staff is being merged into its sister brand MTV Entertainment Studios, leaving nearly 120 Showtime staffers laid off in the transition, an individual with knowledge told IndieWire. Further, a number of the premium cable network’s veteran execs are exiting their current roles.
It’s unclear what departments are being impacted as part of the cuts, but Variety, which first reported the news, notes the layoffs could impact roughly 25 percent of Showtime’s staff.

The Neil Patrick Harris rom-com series Uncoupled is coupled again. Weeks after Netflix canceled the series, Showtime has saved it with a second-season order. According to Deadline, which reported the resurrection, Uncoupled should be “edgier” and “racier” in its new home on Showtime, which will soon be called Paramount+ with Showtime. The site also reports Uncoupled fits into “Metro Cultures,” one of the three content areas that new Showtime boss Chris McCarthy has in mind for the premium cable channel, alongside The L Word: Generation Q and The Chi. (The other two content areas are “Complex Characters” — as in Dexter and Yellowjackets — and “Powerful Worlds” — as in Billions and Homeland). Netflix canceled Uncoupled in mid-January, and MTV Entertainment Studios initially was unable to get the show a new berth at Showtime, but that was before the channel announced its rebranding and its shift in programming strategy. Uncoupled has found a new home following its cancellation on Netflix.
Deadline reported Friday that the Neil Patrick Harris comedy had scored a surprise pickup at Showtime.
The news comes amid a strategic shift at the premium cabler, which recently announced plans to become Paramount+ with Showtime.
As a result, much of the network's content is set to change.
Showtime canceled American Gigolo, Let the Right One In, and the new drama Three Women (despite never airing a single episode).
Several ended shows were also purged in the process, with shows like Kidding removed entirely.
It's unclear whether the purged shows will return somewhere else down the line.
Showtime also recently announced plans to expand the Dexter and Billions franchises.
As many as four spinoffs of the latter are in the works -- including Millions and Trillions.
For Dexter, we're getting a prequel called Dexter: Origin, a second chapter of Dexter: New Blood,...

In the type of trade you’d expect see in the NFL, Netflix and Showtime performed an unexpected show swap this Friday. Netflix’s “Uncoupled” has been picked up from cancellation by Showtime and will return for Season 2 at the channel, while Showtime’s unaired “Ripley” will now premiere on Netflix.
Now, Netflix and Showtime didn’t literally trade the shows for each other, but negotiations for the placement of both shows were apparently occurring parallel to each other, with news happening to break on the same day. “Ripley,” which was first ordered to series in September 2019 and stars Andrew Scott, has reportedly begun post-production on its eight-episode season. “Uncoupled” starring Neil Patrick Harris premiered its first season last July, and was canceled by Netflix last month.
Sources at Netflix confirmed to IndieWire that “Ripley” will premiere on the streamer. Sources at Showtime confirmed to IndieWire that “Uncoupled” has been picked up at the network.

“Uncoupled,” the romantic dramedy starring Neil Patrick Harris, has been revived by Showtime after being axed by Netflix last month in yet another move indicative of the premium network’s new strategy for original series.
News of the move comes after it was announced earlier on Friday that “Ripley,” the highly anticipated drama starring Andrew Scott, was in the final stages of moving to Netflix. Also recently, the completed first season of “Three Women,” with Shailene Woodley, was being eyed for a pickup at Starz after Showtime pulled the plug.

The comedy series Uncoupled has found a new partner.
About a month after Netflix canceled the comedy series starring Neil Patrick Harris, Showtime has revived the show with a second-season pickup. Uncoupled comes from MTV Entertainment Studios, which like Showtime is part of Paramount Global.
The news also comes hours after another series — Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels — went the other direction, moving from Showtime to Netflix.
Created by Darren Star, who has an overall deal at Paramount Global, and Jeffrey Richman, Uncoupled stars Harris as a man who tries to rebuild his life after his long-time boyfriend (Tuc Watkins) moves out. Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks and Marcia Gay Harden also star.
Uncoupled premiered in July 2022 on Netflix and received generally positive reviews; The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han wrote that the show is “blessed with enough wry humor and self-awareness to land just...
