Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

The Bulgarian producer of an espionage thriller sued Abigail Breslin, one of the film’s stars, on Friday, alleging that her “hysterical” and “imaginary” allegations against co-star Aaron Eckhart have imperiled the film’s release.
Dream Team Studios produced the film, entitled “Classified,” in Malta earlier this year. Eckhart plays a hitman who learns that his CIA handler has been dead for years. Breslin plays his daughter.
According to the lawsuit, the entire production “almost ground to a halt” when Breslin accused Eckhart of “aggressive, demeaning and unprofessional” behavior on set. Breslin alleged that his behavior “placed her at various times in peril,” and she refused to be alone with him in several scenes, according to the suit.
Breslin filed a complaint to SAG-AFTRA “setting forth her fears and blasting Eckhart’s behavior,” according to the suit. Eckhart’s representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Have you been dreaming of Nicolas Cage? That's the question that Kristoffer Borgli's R-rated dark comedy "Dream Scenario" is asking. Cage plays a hapless, unassuming educator named Paul Matthews who might as well be the image next to the dictionary definition of "average, middle-aged white man." He wears sensible sweaters over collared shirts, there's a bit more salt than pepper in his beard, and his hairline hasn't been visible from the front for many, many years.
And yet, millions of strangers from all across the globe are starting to see him in their dreams. Sometimes he's a hero. Sometimes he's a bystander in the crowd. Paul's newfound stardom was exciting at first, but now he has to reckon with the reality that his presence is unwelcome and deeply traumatizing for countless people. Because sometimes, Paul is an absolute nightmare, invading people's dreams as if Freddy Krueger were a suburban dad.

Dermot Mulroney didn't decide that he wanted to be an actor until he was already partway through college. According to a profile in a 1986 profile in the Washington Post, Mulroney -- then an up-and-coming 22-year-old -- auditioned for a William Morris agent who just happened to be visiting his college. She was so impressed, she laid a contract in front of him on the spot, and he was on screen in the CBS TV movie "Sin of Innocence" only weeks later. Since then, Mulroney has enjoyed a long and lucrative career in film and TV, appearing in hit films, indie movies, thrillers, horror movies, Christmas movies, and just about anything. Mulroney received a SAG Award nomination for his performance in "August: Osage County" in 2013. He is currently appearing in the Marvel series "Secret Invasion" (as the president) and the Showtime series "Ghosts of Beirut." He also can be seen in...

The oversized contribution Chicago has made and continues to make to the American entertainment landscape comes in no small part from its vibrant and varied theater scene. With well over 200 theaters, from small stages featuring intimate fare to larger houses sending major productions to Broadway and beyond, it’s difficult to find any American film or television series that doesn’t have roots that trace back to Windy City stages.
The Steppenwolf Theater Company is one where heavy-hitters John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf and Gary Sinise forged their craft early in their storied careers. Playwright and actor Tracy Letts premiered his Pulitzer Prize-winning “August: Osage County” at Steppenwolf in 2007.
“It’s a lot easier to produce good theater in Chicago than in many other places,” Malkovich told Roger Ebert back in 1984 and that still applies today. “You can always get a few people together and put on a play.”

The official Hulu account replied, “It is an Honor to have Meryl in our building!”

Juliette Lewis is the secret sauce of film and TV. Drop her in things as disparate as the 2005 indie “Aurora Borealis” (where she impeccably delivers the greatest Thanksgiving plans ever filmed) or the star-studded misfire “August: Osage County,” and Lewis elevates the proceedings. She’s stylized without seeming affected, a live wire of a performer whose expressive face can fold a glare in on itself until it’s heartbroken. And 2022 saw her finally receiving her due. As usual with year-end content, spoilers abound.
“Yellowjackets,” it turns out, was just the amuse-bouche. On Showtime’s cannibals and camaraderie thriller, Lewis plays the adult Natalie with all the punk-rock energy she brought to her band, Juliette and the Licks. Never mind that she’s years older than her castmates; who else could play a woman who drives straight from rehab to a bar, who forges a bizarre friendship with Christina Ricci’s sociopathic Misty,...

2022 TV did not have to go that hard, but it did. From old favorites consistently outdoing themselves to new shows that enchanted both audiences and critics, it was quite a year for networks, cable, and streaming.
2022’s debut shows took viewers everywhere; the saucy ’70s, the corners of the Star Wars universe, the American South through the eyes of bloodthirsty undead, even a relentlessly stressful Chicago kitchen. Picking only 12 was more daunting than ever, but the IndieWire TV team laughed, cried, and fought it out over our favorites.
Here are the 12 best new TV shows of 2022, in order of premiere date.
1. “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)
Though the pilot premiered in December of 2021, “Abbott Elementary” became 2022’s instant network TV darling, now settling into its second season. Creator Quinta Brunson stars as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, whose unyieldingly cheery perspective on education can’t help endear her to beleaguered colleagues at a”n underfunded Philadelphia public school.

Few movie stars maintain character actor quality throughout their careers. Perhaps Ewan McGregor's Scottish underdog background lends itself to his natural ability to embody nearly every type of character with winsome charm and wit. While he's arguably best known for portraying legendary Jedi knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise, McGregor's career is far more than studio tentpole films. As an actor and producer from early in his career, McGregor has continually sought out countercultural roles that go against the traditional Hollywood story.
In films such as "Shallow Grave" (1994), "Trainspotting" (1996), and "Miss Potter" (2006), McGregor portrays rockstars, drug addicts, queer icons, crooks, and romantic leads, all with equal doses of empathy and charisma. Unlike many movie stars of his caliber, McGregor has also embraced television throughout his career, receiving Emmy nominations and awards for his work on "Fargo" and "Halston." Yet, McGregor's film work remains some of his best and most beloved.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts hit the multiplex this weekend in Ol Parker’s romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise, a project that marks the pair’s sixth big-screen collaboration.
The Universal Pictures film casts the pair as exes who find themselves on a shared mission to Bali to stop their lovestruck daughter, played by Kaitlyn Dever, from making the same mistake they once made. After so many outings together, an easy question to toss to Clooney and Roberts: What’s the best part about working together?
“The money. Cash,” Clooney joked to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday night while standing next to Roberts on the pink carpet outside Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre, host of the U.S. premiere.

About a year ago, it was announced that Naomi Watts (King Kong 2005) and Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man) would be starring in The Watcher, a Netflix limited series coming from American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy and his frequent collaborator Ian Brennan Netflix hasn’t yet revealed when they plan to release The Watcher, but they have started marketing the show in a fun way. Not only have they created a Zillow listing for the house at the heart of the story, but they have also released a video in which a realtor played by Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie) gives a tour of the house. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
This series is inspired by a true story that was big news back in 2015:
A couple bought the 1905 Dutch colonial revival in 2014 for nearly 1.4 million. They were forced to abandon their new home over chilling letters from “The Watcher,...

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. Most monumentally, the beginning of the month saw the conclusion of “Stranger Things 4,” which began back in May but is just now finishing up. (There’ll be one more season before the series winds down.) Other new Netflix original series this month include the horror-comedy “Boo, Bitch,” the fourth season of “Virgin River” and the fifth season of all-ages animated spin-off “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” (which we’ve heard has some surprising connections to this summer’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion”).
On the Netflix original films side of things, the biggest new release is undoubtedly “The Gray Man.” A nonstop action extravaganza from Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgmane,” it stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling as dueling spies. Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

‘Fourth of July’ Review: Louis C.K.’s Home-for-the-Holiday Comedy Sidesteps His Scandal. Or Does It?
“Fourth of July” is a movie directed by Louis C.K., and in its light-spirited and unimportant way it comes at the audience as a kind of moral curveball. Starting less than a year after Nov. 2017, when five women came forward to describe inappropriate conduct by Louis C.K., including instances in which he masturbated in front of them (accusations he did not deny), the comedian, actor, screenwriter, and director has been working to revive his career, kicking off his attempted rehabilitation with an appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York on Aug. 26, 2018. The arena of stand-up comedy, with its personal and confessional dimensions, presents an obvious way for someone like Louis C.K. to advertise himself, in the wake of his #MeToo downfall, as an entertainer who is still viable. (He won a Grammy for his 2020 comedy album “Sincerely Louis C.K.”) In that sense, all he needs is...

Ewan McGregor detailed what really happened to the “Don Quixote” film he was attached to over a decade ago.
The “Obi-Wan Kenobi” star was set to replace Johnny Depp in Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” about an advertising executive who travels back in time to 17th-century Spain where he meets the real Quixote. The first attempt at the film, starring Depp, was over-budget, with Gilliam saying at the time that he was “relieved” it fell apart. Now, McGregor told GQ about the time the director Gilliam approached him in 2010 to lead the script that was 20 years in the making. (The role eventually went to Adam Driver in the finished 2018 film.)
“[Terry Gilliam says, ‘What the fuck have you been doing all this time? You’ve been underplaying everything,'” McGregor recalled. “‘What happened to the guy in ‘Trainspotting’? What happened to that guy?!'”
This was well after McGregor broke out of “Trainspotting” in 1996 and by then had starred in the “Star Wars” prequel films.

Marianne Elliott prevailed in a tough Tony race — Best Director of a Musical — winning for her gender-swapped update to Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” This victory means far more than just another trophy on her shelf: with this win, Elliott is now the winningest female director in Tony Awards history.
“Company” marks Elliott’s third win for helming. She previously prevailed twice in the Best Director of a Play category for helming “War Horse” (2011), which she shared with co-director Tom Morris, and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2015). She is the only woman to win Best Director of a Play more than once. The five other women who have won that category are: Garry Hynes (“The Beauty Queen of Leenane”), Mary Zimmerman (“Metamorphosis”), Anna D. Shapiro (“August: Osage County”), Pam McKinnon (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”), and Rebecca Taichman (“Indecent”).

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.

America’s sweetheart wasn’t wooed by a worthy romantic comedy in the last two decades.
Julia Roberts told the New York Times Magazine that the grass always seems to be greener when balancing dramatic and comedic roles as an actress, but that the rom-coms on offer for her until this year’s “Ticket to Paradise” were lacking the spark of her best ones, like “Notting Hill” or “Pretty Woman.”
“What I’ve learned is that you always want to do what you’re not doing,” Roberts said. “Whenever I’m in a comedy, I think I just want to be at a table with a cup of tea sobbing over something. Then you’re doing that, and you think, ‘Oh to be wearing a pretty dress and laughing.'”
Roberts explained that a worthy romance script to her “didn’t exist” until she read Ol Parker’s “Ticket to Paradise.

“Ticket to Paradise,” a forthcoming romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney is exactly the type of movie people always talk about missing. The cross-generational, Bali-set romp is for grown-ups, it isn’t based on anything, and its budget at least could be small.
In an effort to get audiences to recognize just how big a deal this thing is, Roberts is banging the drum well in advance of its late October (New York Film Festival?) release. Speaking with The New York Times to promote her new Starz series “Gaslit,” she said that she hasn’t been avoiding rom-coms for 20 years, it’s just that there haven’t been any offers.
“If I had read something that I thought was that ‘Notting Hill’ level of writing or ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ level of madcap fun, I would do it,” she said. “Ticket To Paradise,” written and directed by Ol Parker,...

While Netflix is rolling out plenty of original content in April, it’s also breaking hearts by removing a myriad of Oscar-nominated classics from its slate this month.
“The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Artist,” “Moneyball,” “August: Osage County” and Sean Baker’s indie darling “The Florida Project” are just some of the Academy Award nominees of years’ past that are leaving the streamer. Other acclaimed drama titles facing the chopping block include “Léon: The Professional,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Miss Sloane.”
For the hopeless romantics out there who rave about underrated gems, “About Time” and “Dear John” will leave the platform April 15 and 30, respectively. Oh, and if you were looking to binge or rewatch all seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” time is of the utmost importance. Additionally, all six seasons of “Dawson’s Creek” are also leaving Netflix this month.
Check out the full list of titles leaving the streamer below.

In the 18 years since he made his TV acting debut on the Disney Channel series “Phil of the Future,” Evan Peters has appeared in a recurring or regular capacity on seven more shows, including nine installments of the anthology series “American Horror Story.” Now, he has at last succeeded in capturing the attention of his peers in the Screen Actors Guild with his performance on the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which just won him an Emmy last September. If he ends up taking home the Best TV Movie/Mini Actor prize, he will be the seventh actor to win it on his first-ever SAG bid and the first since Kevin Costner (“Hatfields & McCoys”) nine years ago.
Peters’s challengers in this contest are Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Ewan McGregor (“Halston”). Like Peters, both Bartlett and Isaac are SAG newcomers.

Ewan McGregor has been singled out for the first time at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actor is nominated for his performance in “Halston” as the eponymous fashion designer, marking his first individual bid with SAG-AFTRA. McGregor is also coming off his first Emmy win last September, laying claim to Best Limited Series Actor, with numerous additional nominations at other award shows. In order to win at SAG, however, he will have to defeat some tough competition.
Other SAG nominees in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor include Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). Bartlett, Isaac, and Peters are all making their SAG debuts, none of them even scoring an ensemble bid in the past. Peters, like McGregor, won an Emmy for his performance in the supporting actor category. Keaton has the biggest SAG...

Michael Keaton might own the record for most film ensemble wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards with three, but the once and future Batman is still looking for his first individual win across both film and television. It could come this year, though, as he’s been nominated for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for his excellent turn as Dr. Samuel Finnix, a doctor in a Virginia mining town, in Hulu’s heartbreaking limited series “Dopesick.” The show, which was inspired by Beth Macy’s nonfiction book “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company That Addicted America,” tells the harrowing story of the opioid epidemic that crippled America, offering a raw but empathetic look at the men and women most affected by the crisis.
This is Keaton’s third individual nomination and second for TV. He was previously nominated in 2008 for his performance in the TNT miniseries “The Company.

Oscar Isaac has been one of the hottest actors of the past decade, starring in a number of acclaimed films and box office smashes. But it is only now that the actor is getting recognition from the Screen Actors Guild, for his soul-bearing performance in the HBO limited series “Scenes from a Marriage.” Isaac’s delicate work opposite Jessica Chastain landed him a nomination in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor at this year’s SAG Awards, where he stands a chance of winning on his first try.
Isaac is joined by two other first-timers in TV Movie/Mini Actor, both from HBO miniseries of their own — Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”) and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). The other two nominees have a decent SAG history including Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), who scores his first individual recognition after three ensemble bids for “Little Voice” (1998), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), and “August: Osage County” (2013). Michael Keaton...

Amidst the chaos of the flawed, self-involved characters on “The White Lotus,” Murray Bartlett‘s Armond emerges as a steadying anchor. This isn’t to say Armond isn’t flawed himself — a formerly drug-addicted hotel manager who is driven to use again after dealing with this bunch — but Bartlett delivers a charismatic, relatable performance that resonates with anyone who has worked with the public. Now, the longtime actor has finally been recognized by his peers at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where he is nominated in the category of Best TV Movie/Mini Actor.
Bartlett is not the only first-time SAG nominee in his category. Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”) and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”) join Bartlett as rookies, with Peters coming off an Emmy win for his performance. Fellow Emmy winner Ewan McGregor was also singled out for the first time by the Screen Actors Guild for...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Reggaeton star Adassa, who made her acting debut starring as Dolores in “Encanto,” says she’s “not surprised” that Disney didn’t submit the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” for Oscar consideration because “Dos Oruguitas,” which is up for best song, is the “heart and soul of the film.” She adds, “Did we know ‘Bruno’ was going to become what it is? No!” Even though it isn’t nominated, Adassa is hoping she will get to perform it at the Oscars: “Hand me the mic. I’m ready for the stage!”
Adassa auditioned for Dolores with a performance of Céline Dion’s “All by Myself.” But then she got Covid. “I was almost dying,” she recalls. “I told doctors I wanted to go home and die with my kids [she and husband Gabriel Candiani have seven children]. So I came home and wrote...

Jane Campion‘s Western psychological drama “The Power of the Dog” is one of the most decorated films of the season, due in part to Benedict Cumberbatch‘s haunting turn as rough-and-tumble rancher Phil Burbank, which earned the performer a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actor. This is the seventh career citation for the British actor, who will take home his first guild victory (and make Bronco Henry very proud) should he triumph for the Netflix film on Feb. 27.
In his category, Cumberbatch finds himself in the company of Netflix and MCU colleague Andrew Garfield, as well as Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Of the bunch, four-time nominee Bardem has the most SAG Award victories to his name, having bagged two statuettes for individual and ensemble acting for “No Country for Old Men” (2007). The only other previous champion is eight-time nominee Washington,...

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Skeleton Crew” (opened January 26; closes February 20)
