Well, this certainly was a cinematic rollercoaster that pushed the boundaries of pop culture crossovers. In a spectacular fan-made video that’s nothing short of peak cinema, we recently witnessed the indomitable Gus Fring (portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito) striding through the mayhem with his signature calm, while a pantheon of heroes tried to hinder his progress.
Indeed, we saw a number of acclaimed A-list action heroes of Tinseltown—from the muscular Arnold Schwarzenegger to the stoic resolve of Keanu Reeves’ character, even the lightning-fast reflexes of The Flash—struggle to hold Gus Fring back.

But that’s not all; even Tom Cruise, donning his iconic Top Gun bravado, took a crack at stopping the unflappable Fring, only to learn that some villains simply can’t be grounded. Gustavo Fring (Esposito) is a principal antagonist in the crime drama series, Breaking Bad and...

After the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, the filmmakers attempted to fill the young adult movie niche. The new fashion of the 2010s became a series of teen dystopian movies, headed by The Hunger Games that was a huge success back in 2012.
Based on Suzanne Collins’ novels, it set the bar quite high for similar movie adaptations, however, the subsequent big screen versions of the hyped bestsellers clearly lacked its wholesomeness. These include the 2014 sci-fi action flick that followed in Thg’s footsteps.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the movie centers on Tris, a 16-year-old girl whose fate is about to be decided. The point is the new dystopian society is divided into four factions based on human virtues: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite.
Born and raised as a member of Abnegation, Tris should choose which faction is going to be her new home, but before that she is warned...

In Netflix’s Ripley — Steven Zaillian’s foray into the world of con man Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley — Eliot Sumner’s Freddie Miles is English. Considering that in both the book and previous 1999 movie, the character is very American, the singer-actor took a risk with the audition.
“I got sent the audition in February 2021, and this was still pandemic time, so I’d been doing a lot of tapes but not getting much work, and this one comes up and I couldn’t really believe it,” says Sumner, whose parents are Sting and actress Trudie Styler. “I thought that I definitely wouldn’t get it. I did it the way that I heard it in my head, and I risked it all by playing Freddie as an English person. Intuitively, I thought it might add some contrast to the rest of the characters.

“Guy has an incredibly lively mind,” says “The Gentlemen” editor Matt Platts-Mills about the show’s creator, Guy Ritchie. “He won’t rest until he’s absolutely sure that he’s hit everything that’s possible with the scene, and that’s across everything. And he kind of develops ideas as he watches it. It’s kind of a ride in itself.” Watch our video interview above.
Platts-Mills edited three episodes of the Netflix comedy series: “An Unsympathetic Gentleman,” “All Eventualities” and the season finale, “The Gospel According to Bobby Glass.” The eight-episode thrill-ride stars Theo James as Edward Horniman, who has unexpectedly inherited an estate of 15,000 acres and the title of Duke of Halstead from his deceased father. Unbeknownst to Horniman, it’s also home to a massive weed empire.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer entered the streaming top 10 in mid-April, and given the continued buzz around the series, it’s likely to stay around for a while.
The show drew 673 million minutes of viewing for the week of April 15-21, according to Nielsen’s latest streaming rankings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth among all titles.
Prime Video’s Fallout had a second straight huge week, if not quite as big as its first. It had 2.62 billion minutes of watch time, off a slight 10 percent from its opening week, which was the best single week for a Prime Video show since Nielsen began its streaming rankings almost four years ago. It’s also the first show that doesn’t stream on Netflix to have back-to-back weeks above 2 billion minutes of viewing.

The Roast of Tom Brady” was the most-watched TV title on Netflix during the week of May 6, and the second-most-watched title overall.
The special, which originally streamed live during the Netflix Is a Joke comedy fest, hit 13.8 million views during the May 6-12 viewing window, a steep increase from the 2 million views that made it the No. 6 English-language TV title the week before, during which it was only available for the weekend. Also recorded live during the festival, Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” held onto its No. 4 position for the second week in a row, increasing slightly from 4 million to 4.3 million views.
On the movies chart, the Brooke Shields-led “Mother of the Bride” quickly dethroned “Unfrosted” in the top position with a strong 26.7 million views — also outpacing the Brady roast. Jerry Seinfeld’s movie followed with 8.8 million views in its first full week of availability.

Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

Guy Ritchie has already set up his next film, reportedly titled Wife & Dog. More on the project below.
Guy Ritchie, Hollywood’s busiest man, is already setting up his next film. World Of Reel reports that Ritchie’s next film will be called Wife & Dog. The film is heading to the Cannes market in the hopes it’ll find more backing there.
That’s all we really know at this point. World Of Reel mentions that the film is said to tackle the subject of class like his recent Netflix TV show The Gentlemen loosely based on a true story – the top secret Operation Postmaster.
The Snatch director is quickly gaining a reputation as the hardest working filmmaker in Hollywood. In the last five years, Ritchie has released six films and a TV show. He’s also currently filming Fountain Of Youth with Natalie Portman and John Krasinski.

One of the latest obsessions of viewers around the world is Guy Ritchie's “gentlemen” universe. Starting with 2019's The Gentlemen, and of course the new series of the same name that was released on Netflix in 2024, the stories of morally ambiguous men in nice suits drive the audience crazy.
However, it seems that these two projects weren’t enough for the director, so he decided to create another flick with a gentleman-esque vibe in the title. We are talking about the 2024 movie called The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
The first question that comes to the minds of all potential viewers was whether the movie is in any way connected to the already existing universe of The Gentlemen? All three installments were created by the British director Guy Ritchie, but if the two previous Gentlemen share “one DNA,” the new movie is not quite their buddy.

Guy Ritchie has another film in the works that doubles down on the British upper class.
The prolific director — already behind this year’s Netflix hit “The Gentlemen” and WWII action thriller “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” — has unveiled his 18th feature film, “Wife and Dog,” with Black Bear launching sales in Cannes.
Plot details and cast are currently being kept under wraps, but Variety hears that with the film, Ritchie will return to the colorful, back-stabbing world of British aristocracy that he explored in both “The Gentlemen” Netflix series and 2019 feature. “Wife and Dog” will shoot in October, with an A-list cast reportedly in negotiations to star.
Ritchie wrote the screenplay and produces alongside long-time producing partner Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Executive producers include Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler for Black Bear.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

Filming is now underway on action adventure movie “Afterburn,” starring Dave Bautista and Samuel L. Jackson with Olga Kurylenko and Kristofer Hivju rounding out the cast.
The film is directed by J.J. Perry, who recently helmed Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game,” also with Bautista, working from a screenplay adapted by Matthew Johnson and Nimrod Antal from the “Red 5” comic book of the same name.
Set ten years after a solar flare wiped out technology across the globe, “Afterburn” follows ex-soldier Jake (Bautista), who works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. His latest mission: team up with freedom fighter Drea (Kurylenko) to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.
The picture is produced by Neal H. Moritz (“Fast and Furious” franchise) and Toby Jaffe (“Total Recall”) for Original Film and Steve Richards for Endurance Media. Bautista will also produce for Dogbone Entertainment,...

Prime Video has touted the viewer response to Fallout as its second-biggest series ever worldwide over 16 days of release. In the United States (and over a shorter time period), it’s No. 1.
Fallout recorded 2.9 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. over its first five days, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for April 8-14. That’s far and away the best opening for a series on the Amazon-owned Prime Video, beating Reacher’s series premiere week in early 2022 (1.84 billion minutes) by more than a billion minutes.
The series also had more than double the second-place show on the list for the week: Bluey had 1.39 billion minutes of viewing in the week leading up to and including the release of its special episode “The Sign,” which premiered on April 14.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” debuted with a bang on the Netflix Top 10.
Despite not premiering until the evening of May 5, when it aired live on Netflix, it was the streamer’s sixth-most-watched English-language TV title of the April 29-May 5 viewing window. In its first few hours of availability, the roast hit 2 million views. And it wasn’t the only live event from Netflix Is a Joke fest to make the chart this week. Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” actually outperformed it as the No. 4 title with 4 million views — though it had the benefit of longer availability, having aired on May 4.
The Jerry Seinfeld-directed movie “Unfrosted” debuted on top of the English-language film chart, but with 7.1 million views in its first weekend, this marks the lowest viewership for a No. 1 film since Netflix began ranking by views in June of 2023.

The 1998 “Seinfeld” finale drew 76.3 million viewers to NBC, which made it the fourth-most-watched series finale in TV history. Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted” opening weekend on Netflix was not that, but it was number 1 on Netflix in its debut, notching 7.1 million views on 11.3 million hours viewed.
The (mostly fiction) comedy film about the invention of the Pop-Tart wasn’t quite a hit with critics (to say the least), but it so far has popped with audiences, probably in part because of the obscene amount of press Seinfeld did leading up to its release.
“Unfrosted” beat out Sony rom-com “Anyone But You” in views, but not hours viewed — the Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney flick is eight minutes longer than Seinfeld’s. The Kellogg’s triumph also unseated Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” which is now on the English Films Top 10 List for its third straight week. The...

While Guy Ritchie’s brand new movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare isn’t doing as well as everybody wished in the box office, a real lifesaver has already come to the director’s rescue.
Four years after its theatrical release, Ritchie’s action comedy hit The Gentlemen is finally available to stream on Netflix — and the timing for the movie’s arrival couldn’t be better.
Having a star-studded cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Hugh Grant, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong and many others, the film follows American cannabis wholesaler Michael ‘Mickey’ Pearson who seeks to sell his weed empire so that he and his wife Rosalind, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, could spend the rest of their life carelessly.

Giancarlo Esposito’s wish to join Marvel Studios finally came true but not as Professor X with his dream version without the iconic character’s wheelchair. The actor has been, with many of his recent cool appearances including Guy Ritchie’s action comedy, The Gentlemen, climbing up the ladder of popularity since his iconic portrayal of Gus Fring in Breaking Bad.
Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian
Recently, Esposito confirmed that he is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the role of the actor remained undisclosed. Of course, Marve Studios has been casting actors for different projects including Fantastic Four but the casting of The Mandalorian star propelled fans to think of Kang.

The doctors were in at the top of Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the beginning of April.
Medical dramas The Resident and Grey’s Anatomy were the top two titles for the week of April 1-7, finishing with 1.18 billion and 1.15 billion minutes of viewing time (both stream on Hulu and Netflix). The Resident actually slipped a little from the previous week‘s 1.48 billion minutes, which was good for second overall, but the show that had been ahead of it — Netflix’s 3 Body Problem — fell further. The sci-fi series dropped by about 47 percent to a still solid 937 million minutes of viewing.
Disney’s animated movie Wish had its streaming premiere on April 3 and racked up 1.02 billion minutes of watch time over its first five days on Disney+. It’s the first film on Disney+ to crack the billion-minute mark since Elemental did so in September 2023. Bluey (1.08 billion minutes) also crossed the...

CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

Baby Reindeer has taken over Netflix.
Richard Gadd’s breakout stalker series was already No. 1 on the streamer’s English-language TV list and, not only did it retain that title for the second week in a row, its viewership shot up to 22M views from April 22 to April 28.
The series, which is loosely based on Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, was easily the most-watched title of the week. It was also leagues above the No. 2 series for this week, which was Dead Boy Detectives.
That series, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s comics, drew 3.1M views after debuting over the weekend.
Elsewhere on the TV list, The Gentlemen and 3 Body Problem are still going strong with 2.3M and 2.2M views, respectively. Both are still quite a ways away from Netflix’s most popular list.

Netflix’s Senna biopic has moved up the gears with a first teaser.
Premiering later this year, the show stars Gabriel Leone as the eponymous driver. The trailer recreates his historic victory at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos, following a challenging race where he was mostly stuck in sixth gear and also marking the first time he won in his hometown of Sao Paulo.
The teaser also displays possible thoughts and experiences, interspersed with images of the race, that led Senna to where he had got to in his career before he tragically died in 1994. The six-parter starts with the genesis of the three-time F1 champion’s motor racing career, when he moves to England to compete in Formula Ford, and runs until his tragic accident in Imola, Italy, during the San Marino Grand Prix.

The State of the Race
The Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category has gotten extra starry this year, with “Only Murders in the Building” and “Palm Royale” alone adding several Oscar winners to the mix. Now, star power actually does not factor too much into the decisions on who to nominate, because campaigns for those stars can sometimes still treat TV like the slums,...

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem delivered its second straight No. 1 showing among streaming titles, leading the rankings for the last week of March. The acquired series top 10 had several new entrants, thanks in part to a change in how Nielsen reports the numbers.
The ratings service says it made an “enhancement” to its Streaming Content Ratings, which is the basis for the weekly top 10 lists, that results in a number of programs being added to the Scr product. (They weren’t previously “due to business agreements which preceded the rankings, coupled with the associated technical aspects of measurement.”) The affected programs stream mostly on Hulu and Peacock after airing on linear networks.
The upshot is that former Fox series The Resident (1.48 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix) and animated mainstays Family Guy (837 million minutes on Hulu) and American Dad (619 million on Hulu) all made their first appearance in the top...

The last few years have seen the Emmy category for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series become pretty myopic. At one point four out of eight of the nomination slots were taken by “Ted Lasso” stars, with Brett Goldstein being the winner that year, and the following. In the case of that Apple TV+ series though, it...

The State of the Race
There’s an idea that a show can finally get in front of the right audience, and build enough momentum to gain Emmys attention in its later seasons, but those moments are few and far between, and often fueled specifically by a show hitting Netflix. That actually has happened for SyFy’s “Resident Alien,” so star Alan Tudyk...

Unlike dramas, Outstanding Comedy Series and its associated Emmy categories has tons of returning contenders. Coming off of such a winning winter awards season for the FX show, it may be hard to see past “The Bear” getting back-to-back wins, but right now, it does not look like the Chicago set series can do much campaigning.

Guy Ritchie has directed everything from low-budget hits like the crime caper "Snatch" to the $1 billion monster hit that was 2019's live-action "Aladdin" remake. But the director has also been behind some pretty big misfires, most notably 2017's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." Ritchie has been on a tear lately though, releasing three movies in theaters over the last 13 months. Unfortunately for the filmmaker and all involved, every single one of those movies has disappointed -- if not outright flopped -- at the box office.
This past weekend saw the release of "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" in theaters in the U.S. Released by Lionsgate, the World War II film took in just $8.9 million, placing fourth on the charts behind "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" ($9.5 million), which was in its fourth weekend. That's a relatively lousy start for a movie with a $60 million production budget. Granted, Lionsgate...
