With its list of new releases for June 2024, HBO streamer Max is finally headed back to Westeros.
The highlight of this month is undoubtedly the premiere of House of the Dragon season 2 on June 16. Episode 1 will drop on both HBO and Max that Sunday night at 9 p.m. Et. With the infamous Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons now underway, the next batch of episodes for this Game of Thrones prequel should be truly epic.
Arriving before House of the Dragon season 2 is another story of a fraught succession. Ren Faire, a documentary series about an ailing king retiring from the country’s largest renaissance festival, premieres on June 2. Other TV options this month include Julio Torres comedy Fantasmas on June 7 and docuseries One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit on June 25.

Cannes — “Never predict, especially about the future,” the saying goes. Three of MipJunior’s key speakers and kids industry players – from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the BBC – took that to heart on Cannes’ Saturday afternoon when addressing the panel subject, “View from the Top: Gazing into the Future of Kids Media.” Rather than addressing where the business is headed – if they knew, they’d have ankled their jobs – Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, the BBC’s Jackie Edwards and Adina Pitt at Cartoon Network drilled down on major changes and challenges affecting where the kids media business is today. Here are five insights:
1.The New Name Of The Game: Partnering
What has changed in the last couple of years? asked Borkent, Nickelodeon senior vice president, global acquisitions and international programming. “For us, it’s about figuring out [how to meet] the desire for more and more content than we’re currently producing.” Nickelodeon’s solution: Partnerships,...

On Oct. 1, 1992 — nearly 25 years to this very day — something extraordinary occurred.
I’m talking, of course, about the birth of Cartoon Network, television’s first provider of round-the-clock animation. And what better way to help the network get through its quarter-life crisis than by arbitrarily judging which of its original creations best stand the test of time?
Before we dive in, I want you to know where I’m coming from. As a child, I basically had three parents: a mother, a father and Cartoon Network. I was four years old when the channel premiered, so by the time it...

We won’t get our first episode of Better Call Saul until February, but we already know what the series will look like somewhat thanks to an interview Bob Odenkirk (who plays the infamous Saul Goodman) did with The Hollywood Reporter. And it may not be what you were expecting. According to Odenkirk, although the show was originally envisioned as a lighter, funnier series than Breaking Bad (maybe even a half-an-hour comedy), Better Call Saul Season 1 will still have its fair share of drama. In fact, Odenkirk insists that the show is “total drama.” “It’s total drama, man,” Odenkirk said to The Hollywood Reporter’s Tim Goodman about Better Call Saul Season 1. “It’s 85 percent drama, 15 percent comedy.” That drama/comedy split may be surprising to some, but it shouldn’t be a huge shock since the series still comes from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, who was a...

Cartoon Network has revealed their 2013-2014 TV show lineup today and, much to the dismay of fans, confirmed that that “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” and “Young Justice” have been canceled. While this may not come as the biggest surprise for the “Young Justice” viewers who paid attention to both the series’ hiatus and subsequent cancellation of its comic book counterpart, the news certainly comes as a blow for fans. Together with the end of “Green Lantern: The Animated Series”, this leaves only “Beware the Batman” and “Teen Titans Go” as the remaining DC Nation shows, both of which have yet to premiere on the network.
While the absence of the shows didn’t necessarily cement the cancellation of the series, Giancarlo Volpe, the showrunner for “Green Lantern: Tas” confirmed the news via his Twitter stating, “This time we knew. They just didn’t want us to announce it publicly until they did.

Beware the Batman – New Promo!
The Cartoon Network has announced its fall lineup, which features a total of seven new series that will make their debut; among them is Beware the Batman, a new take of the Dark Knight, and Ben 10: Omniverse, another series featuring Cartoon Network’s favorite character. Despite all the shows announced being technically new, they’re all rather familiar in some way or another. Beware the Batman and Ben 10: Omniverse are fairly good examples of what I’m talking about. They are new series, but not new intellectual properties.
Related: Beyond Dark Knight Rises, Beware The Batman!
Both actually have a lot in common. They will both feature new enemies for the title characters to face off against. That’s right, folks; Batman has an all new rogues gallery which include such new villains as Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad, and Magpie.

Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, "Reaper," pictured left), Malin Akerman (Couples Retreat, right) and Lucy Punch (Dinner for Schmucks) will star in the indie dark comedy Cottage Country. TV director Peter Wellington ("Rookie Blue") will helm the story about a guy (Labine) who takes his girlfriend to the family cottage for the weekend as the perfect place to propose. However, his plans get upended when his slacker brother (played by Canadian actor Daniel Petronijevic, "Total Drama Island") brings his "free-spirited" girlfriend (Punch) to the cottage on the same weekend.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and CultofMac.com editor Leander Kahney discuss Google, content farms, and Demand Media (plus a personal account of how the tweaked algorithm almost ruined Kahney's business) in our latest edition of The Cold Call.
Welcome to another edition of Cold Call, where we zing a question to our favorite CEOs, entrepreneurs, VCs, and tech evangelists to see how they answer--and how you'd respond. Joining us today are Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and veteran Apple reporter Leander Kahney, editor of CultofMac.com.
Last week, major upgrades to Google's search algorithm affected roughly 12% of all queries. The algorithm tweaks were aimed at one target: "content farms," generally lesser quality, high volume, content-producing websites that have begun to overwhelm top search results through Seo tricks and keyword redundancy. You've probably come across some of the more notorious content farms, from AOL's Seed to Yahoo's Contributor Network to Demand Media's eHow.

At the request of his 11-year-old nephew, Tim McGraw crashed Grassland Middle School’s assembly to tell the kids to be kind to each other and to stand up when someone else gets bullied. He mentioned the sad suicide of Asher Brown by name, and said he had been bullied to death. I think it’s pretty great to see another country star stepping forward like this.

I have to admit I haven't seen any of Total Drama Action. It's a show I often include in my What's On Tonight picks, but I just haven't caught up with it yet. From this recap/preview below, it looks like fun, sort of a weird Cartoon Network version of Survivor, with a few other reality shows mixed in too. The season finale airs this Thursday at 9Pm.

Nickelodeon and Michael Eisner's outfit Tornante Animation are breathing a new level of Griswald-esque family dysfunction into the great American roadtrip with the new animation series Glenn Martin Dds. Glenn Martin, a dentist on the brink of a mid-life crisis, packs his family, on the edge of insanity, into an Rv. The roadtrippin' warriors zig zag from Amish countryside to neon skyline Vegas and back again as the patriarch works on teeth and everyone works on their issues.
Actor-comedian Peter Oldring, fresh from a cross-country research road trip with his fiance, gushes about his involvement in the stop animation series. Certainly not an animation rookie, Oldring signed on because he was particularly attracted to "depth and peculiar 3D quality to the process." The 23-year-old Canadian was awestruck by the fact that such a laborious, time-intensive art form was being resurrected. All the right elements combined into a groundbreaking project...

On the back of the DVD box of this collection, there’s a little warning label that says “Saturday Morning Cartoons - The 1960s is Intended for the Adult Collector and is Not Suitable for Children.” I have no idea why, given that there’s nothing on this set that would be inappropriate to children (except maybe for the fact that Quick Draw McGraw gets shot in the face a dozen times, but even that is stretching it).
It’s true, though, that this compilation set is better aimed at the nostalgic adult, who wants to revisit but not commit to these cartoons. I realized this as I was watching it. The two-disc set, containing 33 episodes from 12 different shows made by Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros, appears to have been put together randomly. A sampler, you might say. It combines the popular shows everybody knows (Flintstones, Jetsons, Space Ghost) with the more obscure ones,...

Cartoon Network is growing up... or trying to. And in the process, they're getting away from the things that make them, well, a cartoon network.
That's the theme that seems to be running through their upfront presentation for the 2009-2010 season. Highlights include entering into the reality TV genre, creating a new sports-centric programming block, and introducing 19 new programs, pilots, and movies, including six that are live-action (umm...) as well as 164 episodes of returning series. In doing so, Cartoon Network stepped out on its evolutionary path to become what it described as a "dominant youth culture brand," that not only understands boys, including boys 6-11, but girls and older kids too, while creating "un-sanitized" "TV for kids, not kids TV".
Luckily, no one seems to talking about renaming it "CyFy". Yet.

One of the many good things coming from Canada is the animated program Total Drama Island, a great success both here in my country and as far as I gather, all over the world. Tdi takes an unusual premise of doing an animated teenage reality show which manages to be entertaining to both younger and older audiences. Like in actual reality shows, each week the contestants have to participate in various insane tasks, earn marshmallows and remain on the island without getting voted off. Each teen stands for a common a steretype from the dumb blond to the goth girl and the party kid. There are even some more whacked out stereotypes like a home-schooled sexist genius and a jock who sucks at every imaginable sport but has cool tracksuits. The show constantly plays with the expectations and the rules of reality TV, ending up with something that's far more entertaining than the real thing.
