It speaks to the turmoil of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest that in the days after its end, the winner seems to be an afterthought and instead, the focus remains on the divisive nature of the competition.

John Oliver took the first part of Last Week Tonight to talk about the Eurovision Song Contest and highlighted the act from Finland, known as Windows95man.
The HBO late-night host said the Finland entrant was his “absolute favorite,” who appeared on stage singing “No Rules!” written by Henri Piispanen, Jussi Roine and Teemu Keisteri.
Windows95man was seen on stage coming out of an egg-shaped enclosure wrapped in denim while only wearing a Windows95 crop top and cap.
“Yes! Fourteen thousand out of ten,” Oliver said after a clip of Windows95man’s performance.
He continued, “A man with flowing blonde locks and pervert glasses, hatching out of a denim egg? It’s like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus only this time it’s actually good.”

Swiss performer Nemo has won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, beating Croatian artist Baby Lasagna, who finished second, in what was perhaps the most divisive competition in its history.
The nonbinary singer, representing Switzerland, won with their track “The Code” collecting 591 points from a combination of music industry juries in each participating country and the global public. Croatia placed second with 547 points at the event in Malmö, Sweden and Ukraine third with 453 points. Rounding out the top five were France and Israel with 445 and 375 points, respectively.
Eurovision was back and supplied everything fans are used to seeing on Europe’s most eccentric music night of the year: corset-clad dancers in knee-high leather boots puckering up for the Spanish “Kylie Minogue,” Ireland‘s horned goth gremlin scream-singing a dark tale of witchcraft and some crafty camerawork masking the genitals of Finnish entrant Windows95Man (his denim shorts were swiftly delivered onstage by...

Thousands took to the streets in Malmö, Sweden to protest the Israel-Hamas war and the decision to allow Israel’s contestant Eden Golan to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest and its Saturday final. Some estimates said there were more than 15,000 protesters, though police pegged the demonstration at between 6,000 and 8,000 demonstrators. Israel and Golan ended up finishing in fifth place, with Switzerland ultimately taking home the victory, though Israel took a brief lead with a strong showing in the fan vote as the votes were announced.

Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Swiss entry Nemo stormed the contest with the song “The Code,” walking away with 591 points — a combination of a jury vote and public vote.
But during Nemo’s victory performance at the end of the four-hour show the singer accidentally dropped the microphone-shaped glass trophy, injuring their thumb in the process.
“I didn’t just break ‘The Code’ I also broke the trophy,” said Nemo during the press conference after the show, where their hand was wrapped in a bandage. “I broke my thumb as well. But I got a new [trophy] so I technically have two now.”
The non-binary singer — who is the first Swiss Eurovision winner since Celine Dion won in 1988 — was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner, Swedish singer Loreen.

Before Luke Mitchell made a home on Chicago Med this season, the ubiquitous Australian actor appeared on many, many TV shows, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Blindspot, The Code, Legacies and Big Sky.
But it’s Mitchell’s breakout Stateside role on The CW’s The Tomorrow People, where he played the superpowered group’s leader John Young, that stands out for the actor. When asked which of his past characters he would like to revisit, Mitchell is quick to single out the short-lived series, which aired during the 2013-14 TV season.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is now right on our doorstep. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), the Eurovision Song Contest is the most famous, extravagant music competition in existence with various European countries competing to be crowned the year’s winner and host the next year’s competition.
Before the grand final, however, two semi-finals take place. The top 10 in each semi-final then go through to the final, where they are joined by the host country (the winner of the previous year) and the Big Five — who all qualify automatically. Then, each country performs and vies for votes.
After the performances, every member of the Ebu dials in and dishes out 1-8, 10, and 12 points to their favorite songs – with the points decided via a combination of public votes and jury decisions in each country. Whichever country amasses the most points wins.

IATSE Local 161, which represents East Coast script supervisors, production coordinators and accountants, will begin bargaining with the AMPTP on Monday for a new film and TV contract. Pay equity is a major issue, said Dawn Mountain, the local’s president and chair of its contract negotiations committee. Mountain, a veteran production coordinator whose credits include Blue Bloods and The Code, noted that 66 of the local’s 1,400 members in 23 states are women, and that the local’s production coordinators are paid “significantly less” than department heads in male-dominated crafts.
“This is an equity issue,” she told Deadline. “Our production coordinators, who function as heads of departments and run staffs of anywhere from five to 10 people, are the communications centers between the studios and what’s happening on set. We manage a million different things, and we have a million different job titles and we’re not paid as heads of departments.

Aussie actor Luke Mitchell is back on U.S. television thanks to a drama set in a small New England town filmed near Montreal.
Welcome to the international world of TV.
Mitchell is starring in the new drama The Republic of Sarah, airing at 9 p.m. Mondays on The CW.
Sarah is fairly high-concept for The CW. A large vein of a valuable mineral used in electronics is discovered under the small town of Greylock, N.H. Sarah Cooper, a local history teacher, attempts to save the town using a legal loophole built on mapping errors from colonial times.
Mitchell found the show's concept intriguing.
“I was really drawn to the world,” he recalled in a Zoom interview from Sydney. “I really liked the small-town vibe and the fact that everyone knows everyone. There are cute, quirky, flawed characters that all have a past, all have their own challenges to work through.

Let's look at some cultural background on the year 1947 before we reach the new Smackdown event in exactly one week (have you voted yet?). Light entertainments were very popular but Post-War America and by extension Hollywood was feeling a dark undertow and anxiety. Cinema went deep into noir territory (men really didn't know who to trust or what to make of women after they'd becoming working girls during the War and the anxiety definitely showed onscreen) and offscreen things were treacherous. The infamous witchhunt for Communists began in Hollywood, cutting off the careers of many talented actors and filmmakers who wouldn't 'name names', beginning with "The Hollywood Ten".
Great Big Box Office Hits:
A now long-forgotten picture, Welcome Stranger (reteaming the Oscar-winning stars of Going My Way) was one of the year's very biggest attractions. The best-seller turned rom-com The Egg and I was also a huge success.

Icelandic cinema scored one more victory at the 2016 Harpa Awards, which took place at the Nordic Embassies during Berlinale on February 15, 2016. Composer Atli Örvarsson won the award for Best Film Score for the Icelandic film "Rams," while Johann Johannson took home the Honorary Award.
“The award for Best Film Score goes to a man with a unique sound,” said the jury who consisted of Thomas Robsahm, Konrad Sommermeyer and Christineauf der Haar. “The accordion perfectly matches the loneliness, the nature and the sound of the sheep calling out for each other - the bleating. The music, the atmosphere and the pictures fit perfectly together. It feels as if the director and the composer really are in close contact – and telling their story together.”
Grímur Hákonarson's "Rams" took home the Un Certain Regard Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since screened at numerous festivals around the world charming critics and audiences alike. Cohen Media Group released the film stateside earlier this month.

Atli has worked with Hans Zimmer in Los Angeles for a number of years. Since moving back to his original hometown Akureyri in northern Iceland, he has scored a number of Hollywood films and TV series as well as Icelandic films. The film "Rams" was coincidentally shot in the remote countryside village where his mother grew up and is based on a true story about two elderly brothers living on the same farm and leading a very rural countryside life - but have not spoken to each other for many decades. Atli is the son of Iceland´s most distinguished accordionist Örvar Kristánsson who passed away last year. Atli created the score to a large degree using his father’s old accordion which is heavily featured in the score.
Atli’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He has contributed music to films from "Angels and Demons" to "The Holiday. As a composer, Atli Örvarsson displays musical diversity throughout his action-film scores in "The Eagle," "Vantage Point," "Babylon A.D.," the Morgan Freeman caper "Thick as Thieves," "The Fourth Kind," and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy "Season of the Witch." Atli’s most recent credits include "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the dark and edgy film "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the drama/thriller "A Single Shot" starring Sam Rockwell, the hit NBC series "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd," and working with Hans Zimmer to contribute music to the Zack Snyder's Superman reinstallment "Man of Steel."
The Harpa Awards were invented in 2009. The aim was to put a spotlight on Nordic talent, skills and know-how and to promote the great Nordic film talents in music and acting for the international film industry and thereby strengthening the opportunities for cooperation between the Nordic countries and the international film market. HollywoodNews.com: The Playlist doesn’t break news all that often, merely seeing fit to be a one-stop shop for the movie news that everyone else breaks during the day (I don’t mean that as an insult, The Playlist is the site I go to if I only have time to surf one movie news site in a given day), So it’s somewhat of a big deal that The Playlist has broken a pretty major story, confirming that director Gary Ross will not be back to helm the second and/or third films in the Hunger Games franchise. There have been rumblings all week about contract negotiations, and Ross has now politely passed. The site chalks it up to both Ross’s lack of desire to stay in the same universe for the next several years combined with a somewhat low-ball offer from Lionsgate. Whatever the case, Ross...

Mimi Leder has built a name for herself as one of the more successful female directors working today, helming such high-profile films as Deep Impact and Pay It Forward. Now she's settled on her next project: a remake of All Quiet on the Western Front. Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the story concerns the terrifying trench warfare of Wwi that "traumatizes a young and idealistic German soldier on the Western front." The 1930 film version of the story is widely considered a classic, having won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Leder was drawn to the project for its brutal depiction of war, commenting, "There is an opportunity to make a great film about war, but it is also an anti-war film, an un-romanticized version of war and its consequences." Leder has been out of the movie business for a while now, instead focusing on TV...

Director Mimi Leder learned her craft on t’ telly before graduating to the big screen with a bang thanks to the likes of The Peacemaker and Deep Impact. Since then, things have been a little quieter following Pay it Forward and her last cinematic effort, Thick as Thieves, which bypassed theatres and went straight to DVD. But she hasn’t been sitting around – she’s switched back to TV for some meaty assignments, including the Us version of Shameless, and has now picked an ambitious project to try her movie luck again, signing on to craft a new adaptation of World War One novel All Quiet on the Western Front. We use the term ambitious because the first attempt to translate Enrique Remarque’s book to the screen resulted in 1930’s eponymous film, which won the Best Picture Oscar and a gong for director Lewis Milestone. Back in “the day”, Mimi Leder was one of the few female directors doing action movies in Hollywood. In case the name doesn’t sound familiar, she directed both “Deep Impact” and “The Peacekeeper” with a then-fledgling movie star George Clooney. Whatever happened to her? Well, since 2000′s drama “Pay It Forward”, Leder has kept mostly busy with an extensive collection of TV work, and her last feature film was 2009′s direct-to-video heist flick “Thick as Thieves”. According to Deadline, Leder is making her big screen comeback with a remake of the 1930 war movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” for Sliding Down Rainbows Entertainment and producers/screenwriters Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson. Like Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning 1930 original, Leder’s “Western Front” will be based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, which dives into the horrors of trench warfare during World War I as seen through the eyes of a German soldier.

We already wrote about the upcoming spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy that has some great cast, and when we say that, we mean: Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes and Colin Firth are all in one movie!
We also reported that Michael Fassbender will be the part of the project too, but it looks that Inglourious Basterds star has moved on to X-Men: First Class which just started shooting.
So, now, we’re here for a little update that goes like this: Tom Hardy (Layer Cake, RocknRolla, Bronson, Thick as Thieves, Inception), has stepped into Fassbender’s role.
Or, if you prefer more details, Hardy will play tricky Ricky Tarr, a British operative who is the acquaintance of lead character George Smiley.
Gary Oldman is set to play George in a movie that is actually an adaptation of John Le Carre’s seminal cold war best-seller.

A few days ago we had a little chat about Angelina Jolie and her plans for shooting of a movie in Serbia and the region, which would mark her directorial debut.
So, you probably remember that we also mentioned Jolie will be in the leading female role, right?
But, that’s not going to happen, because the actress will make her debut as a director and a screenwriter for the upcoming romance. Sorry guys, but no Jolie on a big screen this time!
We also know that Rade Serbedzija (The Saint, Snatch, Batman Begins, Eyes Wide Shut, Mission: Impossible II, Thick as Thieves) will appear in Jolie’s yet untitled war love story.
“For almost two months already I have been in contact with Angelina Jolie. She tried to contact me via my agents and they told her that I am not acting in movies on war in former Yugoslavia.

It’s hard to a fault a movie that features Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman, and William H. Macy in key roles, even if it does look like yet another wacky heist movie featuring actors who are capable of better things. Peter Hewitt’s 2009 crime comedy “The Maiden Heist” certainly has potential, but after watching the trailer, I’m not entirely sold on the idea. I used to be able to trust Morgan Freeman, that is, until I properly investigated both “The Contract” and “The Code,” two films that are the very definition of mediocre. What’s more, it’s from the guy who directed that terrible live-action “Garfield” flick. Yikes. Perhaps “The Maiden Heist” suffers from a lackluster trailer, one that degrades the film’s overall quality. Then again, maybe not. Here’s what it’s all about: A comedy centered on three museum security guards who devise a plan...

If there was a genre of film entitled ”Mediocre Heist Films” “The Code” would be on the top of the list, without a shadow of a doubt. Unfortunately there is not a genre of that nature so “The Code” gets put towards the bottom of the list of ‘Heist Films’. Now don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t the worst film I’ve ever seen, the problem is that it is very forgettable. “The Code” is the story of Keith Ripley (Morgan Freeman), a thief who is arguably the best in the game. Keith is in debt to the Russian mob, So he has to pull of one last big heist to pay them back. So he recruits Gabriel Martin (Antonio Banderas), a thief who is young in the game with a promising track record. All this is happening while the FBI is trying to arrest Keith, the proverbial white whale.

Hey, remember the Morgan Freeman / Antonio Banderas thriller, The Code (also known as Thick as Thieves)? No? That's ok, no one does! This poor film was doomed to go straight to DVD shelves, but there it was not forgotten. Home Media Magazine reports that the flick topped the rental charts last week, deftly knocking Gran Torino out of #1. (Mr. Freeman, did you call and crow over your pal Clint for that one? If not, you should. I'm sure he'll get a good laugh.)
Scott Weinberg believes this is the first Dtv movie to ever top the rental charts. If anyone out there knows of another one that has, you should correct him. But for now, history has been made by Mimi Leder!
The plot follows an aging jewel thief (Freeman) and the uppity young Turk he recruits to help him pull off one final job. They're not going after just any family jewels,...

Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas have to break into a seemingly impregnable vault to steal some eggs or someone will die. This thriller would appear to have a top notch cast, but it dumped to home video because the story is entirely predictable. International art thief Keith Ripley (Morgan Freeman) is riding the subway and low level thief Gabriel Martin (Antonio Banderas) steals some diamonds. Ripley watches Martin work with interest because he.s formulating his next job and needs a partner, so he approaches Martin and asks him to fill the bill. Ripley.s next job is to steal some priceless Faberge eggs, which were thought lost, that have resurfaced and are being kept in an impregnable vault...

Movie hunk Antonio Banderas has become wary of stripping off onscreen - because he is reluctant to flaunt his body as he gets older.
The actor disrobes for passionate scenes with Radha Mitchell in upcoming crime drama The Code.
But he felt uncomfortable getting naked in front of the cameras - because the ageing process has affected his confidence.
Banderas tells the New York Post, "It's always uneasy when you get into bed with a woman on screen - it's difficult because you have 50 people around and there are some people who are sensitive to that.
"Radha was - she is a lady, so I tried to be as respectful as possible. At the same time, I'm nearly 50 years old, and even I start getting more wary of those scenes... Everything changes as you get older - your mind, your body, the way you view the world."...

Worst. DVD. Release. Day. Ever. Aside from the Oscar-nominated Waltz with Bashir, the only major releases out this week are Confessions of a Shopaholic, the Brendan Fraser fantasy dud Inkheart, and... The Pink Panther 2. Ewww. Oh but wait it gets better! There's the Antonio Banderas/Morgan Freeman direct-to-dvd crime flick The Code, Simon Says starring Crispin Glover, Legend of the Bog starring Vinnie Jones, and the made-for-tv horror movie Backwoods starring Haylie Duff! At least there are a couple of Criterion releases and an older Mike Leigh movie called High Hopes... but seriously, that's it. Waltz with Bashir [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Confessions of a Shopaholic [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Inkheart [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) The Pink Panther 2 [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) The Code [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Phoebe in Wonderland [11] Bob Funk [12] Simon Says [13] Backwoods [14] Table for Three [15] Mr. Troop Mom [16] (DVD, Blu-ray [17]) Dragon Hunters [18] (DVD, Blu-ray [19]) Guns [20] High Hopes [21] Legend of the Bog [22] War Wolves [23] My...

It has been some time since we've seen actor Antonio Banderas on the big screen, but sadly, it may still be a little longer, because his latest movie, The Code (formerly called "Thick as Thieves") will be released on DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday without getting a theatrical release here in the United States. It's a shame, because the actor.driven heist movie in the vein of Ocean's 11 , The Italian Job and The Score teams Banderas with Morgan Freeman, and it's better than a good amount of the movies we've seen get theatrical releases, plus it's also the first movie in many years from director Mimi Leder ( Deep Impact ). In the movie, Banderas plays Gabriel, a jewel thief who meets Freeman's Ripley while pulling a complicated subway train heist that goes wrong, and...
