The 1990s are regularly regarded as the era of the high-concept thriller. In the wake of eighties smashes like Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction, audiences tended to flock to these kinds of movies, although it’s worth noting they quickly spun off into two different mini-genres. There was the erotic thriller genre, whose queen was definitely Sharon Stone, with movies like Basic Instinct and Sliver, but there was also the so-called yuppie thriller.
These movies often centred around upwardly mobile middle-class couples who wind up in the crosshairs of a maniac who wants to dismantle their lives. Fatal Attraction was arguably the first of these. Still, many more would follow, including Pacific Heights, which featured Michael Keaton in a memorably evil role, Bad Influence (with Rob Lowe), Internal Affairs (which revitalized Richard Gere’s career), Malice, and the great Single White Female. But, of the genre, one of the most effective was 1992’s Unlawful Entry,...

The director of In the Company of Men continues his run of terrible films with this awfully acted, ungripping drama
In the most dismaying possible way, Neil Labute has done it again. The dramatist and film-maker who gave us the 90s toxic masculinity classic In the Company of Men and the interesting and undervalued Samuel L Jackson thriller Lakeview Terrace in 2008, seems now to be going through a period of churning out exploitation content like a hack-for-hire. Last year we had the dismal revenge horror House of Darkness; now it’s this terrible home invasion thriller, with awful acting, clunking dialogue cues and drearily ungripping action and suspense sequences, along with a ChatGPT-ish title.
Maggie Q plays Tess, a military veteran who has seen action in Iraq and is now a recovering alcoholic struggling with a return to civilian life. She agrees to come to her sister’s bachelorette party...

For all of the murder and crime that occurs in Erotic Thrillers, more often than not, the police are barely present in the subgenre. If the protagonist isn’t a cop, there might be a detective on the margins or a beat cop taking a statement at a crime scene, but more often than not, law enforcement is typically absent.
Fatale upends this convention in part by fusing a stalker/infidelity storyline with a crooked cop plot wherein the jilted woman is also the film’s detective.
The film’s other novel twist, courtesy of screenwriter David Loughery, is that the central pairing is interracial. Loughery, who is white, is no stranger to exploring race in his screenplays: he co-wrote 2008’s Lakeview Terrace, in which Samuel L Jackson is a crooked cop who terrorizes neighbor Patrick Wilson, as well as 2009’s Obsessed, in which Beyonce must defend her marriage from obsessed white woman Ali Larter.

Plot: A bachelorette party being held in an isolated farmhouse is crashed by a group of homicidal home invaders.
Review: In some circles, writer/director Neil Labute tanked his reputation by making the goofball 2006 remake of The Wicker Man – which is a shame, because when he first arrived on the scene he was a best known for making emotionally devastating dramas and dark comedies like In the Company of Men and Your Friends & Neighbors. His latest film is the home invasion thriller Fear the Night… and while it’s not on the level of his well-regarded dramas and dark comedies, it also doesn’t fall to the depths of the Wicker Man remake. (Which star Nicolas Cage insists was always meant to be a comedy as well.) So it may be best to refer to this one as “From the director of Lakeview Terrace”. It’s not great, it’s not bad.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Jeff Danna’s score for Julia, which is set for release tomorrow via Watertower Music.
HBO Max’s eight episode comedy series is inspired by Julia Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history—the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the show is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
One of Danna’s main challenges in his work here was to develop a theme that could speak to both the culinary icon’s spirit, and the series’ “brilliant and warm showcase” of her early years on television.

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.
Here’s the full list of everything leaving in November:...

You’d have to be a pretty big Samuel L. Jackson fan to keep up to date with every single one of his movies, because the famously prolific star is known for being one of the busiest men in the industry that never seems to stop working, which is why he’s held onto the title of highest-grossing actor in history for so long – although those cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s countless billion dollar hits help out a lot.
The current state of the world means that the 71 year-old’s performance in March’s The Banker will be his only movie appearance of 2020, which is the first time he’s been reduced to a single starring role in a calendar year since he made his feature film debut as Gangster No. 2 in 1981’s Ragtime.

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Lionsgate has acquired North American and key foreign territories to Deon Taylor’s psychological thriller Fatale starring two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank, Michael Ealy, Mike Colter, and Tyrin Turner.
Fatale centers on a married man who finds himself living a nightmare as he is relentlessly compromised, out-witted and morally manipulated by a mysterious woman with whom he had a wild one-night stand. How far will he go to save his marriage from his mistake?
Written and produced by David Loughery, the film is produced by Taylor’s Hidden Empire Film Group partner Roxanne Taylor and is executive produced by partner Robert F. Smith. Time-time Oscar nominee Dante Spinotti served as Dp, marking his third collaboration with Taylor on Fatale. Deadline exclusively announced Fatale last August.
Taylor was behind this past summer’s The Intruder, which grossed $37M WW off an $8M net cost before P&a.

Home invasion thrillers have given us plenty of maniacal villains hellbent on terrorizing helpless residents of cavernous houses. Whether they’re driven by dementia or greed (or both), these villains pillage, plunder, and leave the scene a bloodbath.
Rarely are they provoked by a former homeowner’s mundane desire to still occupy the residence, as it is for Dennis Quaid’s vein-popping Charlie Peck in director Deon Taylor’s “The Intruder.”
In director Jung Huh’s 2013 film, “Hide and Seek,” the unhinged former renter (Mi-seon Jeon) is at least driven to madness due to a visceral combination of grief and poverty. But Charlie is nothing more than a man who’s mad that he lost his money after a few bad business deals and had to give up his gigantic Napa Valley home to a successful young married couple: Annie and Scott Russell. Charlie gets a huge windfall after they buy his home,...

A contrived and cliché-stuffed thriller such as “The Intruder” often forces me to suppress an urgent desire to shout rude things at the screen. So I must confess that I had a great time watching this very bad movie as a member of a very vocal preview audience that had been given carte blanche to provide full-throated running commentary.
The PR wizards had alerted the invitees: “For this screening, we are encouraging the audience to ‘watch out loud.’ Feel free to vocalize your reactions as loudly as you want while you watch!” No, really. Judging from how frequently folks seated nearby offered scornful groans, snarky observations and insulting appraisals of the characters’ intelligence, this was pretty much exactly the right place at precisely the right time to derive maximum enjoyment from this particular communal experience.
Your mileage, however, may vary.

Movies New to Netflix in April: ‘Burning,’ ‘American Honey,’ and Extended Version of ‘Hateful Eight’
Netflix might be skipping this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the streaming giant is offering a bit of a mea culpa in its April offerings, which come with some exciting options from bonafide auteurs who also happen to be Cannes regulars, including Lee Chang-Dong, Andrea Arnold, and Quentin Tarantino. Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner “I, Daniel Blake” will also join Netflix’s ranks next month, along with classics like “All the President’s Men,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” and “Deliverance.”
In April, Netflix will add Lee’s lauded Cannes competitor “Burning,” which missed out on Oscar love but picked up plenty of other accolades during last year’s awards circuit, including a number of nods for star Steven Yeun. It will be joined by Arnold’s 2016 Palme d’Or entry “American Honey,” along with an extended version of Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”.

The Perfect Guy‘s marketing campaign doesn’t do the self-consciously campy stalker-thriller (a less over-the-top but still ideal double billing with last January’s The Boy Next Door) any favors – its tagline, “Trust One, Fear the Other,” promises a tastelessly regressive sort of love triangle in which two possessive men clash violently over the affections of a lady love. That’s not the kind of film, in a year that’s already delivered some of the decade’s most indelible female characters (in fare as diverse yet mainstream as Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, Spy and Inside Out), many critics are chomping at the bit to sample.
Luckily, this is one of those rare Hollywood productions with surprises in store, most notably lead actress Sanaa Lathan, who takes a simple harangued-heroine part and draws out of it enough charisma and complexity to elevate the entire movie above the...

The Scandinavians have Lars Von Trier, and Americans may boast Harmony Korine as our enfante terrible, but writer/director Neil Labute is still unquestionably America’s premier big screen provocateur. Over the years, he’s poked, prodded and challenged audiences with many confrontational and discomfiting topics both in film and on the stage, tackling misogyny and sexism (“In The Company Of Men”), obesity/female body issues (the stage play “Fat Pig”), the duplicity of the art world and calculating females (“The Shape Of Things”), post 9/11 fallout (“The Mercy Seat”) and the repercussions of an interracial love triangle ("This Is How It Goes," "Lakeview Terrace”). Labute functions like a portrait artist of nasty, vicious human behavior, deceitful psychologies and devious assholes — his worldview is often deeply cynical, presenting the unpleasant aspects of human nature. Nearly once a year, he turns out a new work that’s sharp, funny, observational and indeed.

Exclusive: Hear The Full 'Tyrant' Title Theme From The Official Soundtrack By Mychael And Jeff Danna
The sibling composer pair Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna bring some considerable talent to the table. The former is regular collaborator with Canadian auteur filmmaker Atom Egoyan, and took home an Oscar for his work on Ang Lee's "Life Of Pi." The latter also has had a long and varied career, creating works for both television and movies. Together, they've worked on films like "Lakeview Terrace" and "Tideland," and the latest effort to combine their powers is the FX series "Tyrant," and today we have an exclusive listen of the show's title theme. The drama centers on the youngest son of a war-torn country’s controversial dictator, who returns to his homeland after a self-imposed 20-year exile in America, only to be forced back into the treacherous familial and national politics of his youth. And the milieu provides plenty of musical opportunities for the Dannas to explore. “We were initially...

Blindsided, alternatively known as Penthouse North, was first announced in 2011, screened at festivals in 2013, aired on Lifetime in January 2014 and is only just now making its way to DVD--a winding road to be sure, and one that generally does not bode well for a film’s quality. Written by seasoned thriller writer David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace, Obsessed) and directed by Joseph Ruben (cult horror classic The Stepfather), Blindsided stars Michelle Monaghan as Sara, a photojournalist who was blinded by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan (though her pretty face was conveniently left unmarred by the explosion), and Michael Keaton as Hollander, a vicious criminal determined to find the diamonds that are supposedly hidden in Sara’s glamorous New York City penthouse.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Human beings and their affectionate vibes are something special. After all, we as individuals are going to love who we feel are worth loving. However, society demands that the protocol of loving should be straight-forward and “natural”. The rule of thumb: stick to your own kind! Whether it is being loyal to your own kind racially or culturally or either with your own age range the expectation of romance is defined…do not make waves and keep things safe and mainstream!
Well, human beings can be also unpredictable and live for going against the grain especially certain characters and personalities in the movies. Love and romance make for great film fodder but when the notion of such on-screen amorous activities takes its theme to a whole new challenging level then the gloves are off!

Earlier this spring, Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart were named to lead a new action comedy called The Black Phantom. The story follows a hitman who is double-crossed and forced to enlist the help of another hitman called The Black Phantom, the same assassin hired to kill him in the first place. But now Deadline reports Samuel L. Jackson will be taking the title role instead of Foxx, who was forced to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. The film is described as "an outrageously inappropriate comedy," and having Jackson paired with Hart doesn't sound bad, if only because I want the former to just kick the latter's ass. Screen Gems is behind the project, who last teamed with Jackson on the less than average thriller Lakeview Terrace, but this will be the first time the Pulp Fiction star has worked with hyper comedian Kevin Hart. There's a lot...

Stars: Michelle Monaghan, Andrew W. Walker, Michael Keaton, Barry Sloane, Trevor Hayes, Tilo Horn | Written by David Loughery | Directed by Joseph Ruben
Written by David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace, Passenger 57) and directed by Joseph Ruben (Sleeping With The Enemy, The Forgotten), Penthouse North is a thriller, and an old school one at that, mixing elements of mystery and tense, edge-of-your-seat atmosphere to create a tale of suspense that keeps you entertained for its ninety minute runtime.
The story revolves around Sarah (Monaghan) who lives in a penthouse apartment with her boyfriend, Ryan (Walker), she is a former military photo-journalist who lost her sight while on assignment in Afghanistan, and her relationship with Ryan is about to be explored as he is not all that he seemed.
The premise is intriguing and had the potential to be something dark and culturally relevant, but stumbles at times and finds itself becoming a...

The past few years have been strange for Neil Labute. Not personally speaking, unless TMZ covers Labute’s life and I missed something, but his filmography took a turn with 2006′s The Wicker Man. He went from directing The Shape of Things to Nicolas Cage in a bear suit screaming about bees. He followed that YouTube sensation with Lakeview Terrace and Death at a Funeral. He was trying his hand at new material, which in today’s world, is seen as strange. But Labute has returned to directing his own material, where the border between the stage and film is broken down. Some Velvet Morning is set in one location with two characters, Fred (Stanley Tucci) and Velvet (Alice Eve), working out their feelings with explosive results. For Labute, this film is a return to his roots. We got to talk to Labute about his writing process, what makes something cinematic and why he likely wouldn’t...

When NeilLaBute's latest "Some Velvet Morning" premiered back at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, anticipation was muted. The acerbic playwright who made name for himself with acidic variations on the battle of the sexes (best captured in his scorching film debut "In the Company of Men"), had as of late been churning out tepid studio efforts ("Death at a Funeral," "Lakeview Terrace" and the reviled "Wicker Man" remake) that left fans of his earlier work befuddled and disappointed. Had the once wry writer-director lost his edge? As it turns out, not at all. Read More: Alice Eve on Why 'Some Velvet Morning' Marks a Personal Watershed For Her The stripped down and micro-budgeted "Some Velvet Morning" marks a thrilling return to his provocative films of yore. Sexually charged and almost unbearably tense, the two-hander stars Alice Eve (in a revelatory performance) as a beautiful former mistress to...

Following the shiny, sexy and stylish teaser poster for the long delayed horror thriller Nurse 3D from Lionsgate, we finally have a teaser trailer for the film arriving next February. With a Single White Female vibe, this looks like a sultry but trashy movie that feels like a Skinemax movie that looks pretty. Paz De La Huerta leads the charge as a nurse who becomes obsessed with one of her co-workers (Katrina Bowden), but when she pulls away from her aggressive advances, that's when things get deadly. We suppose the rampant sex and nudity isn't a far cry from other horror movies, but it feels like 3D softcore porn. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Doug Aariniokoski's Nurse 3D, originally from Apple: Nurse 3D is directed by Doug Aariniokoski (The Day, Highlander: Endgame), who wrote the script with David Loughery (Obsessed, Lakeview Terrace). Abby Russell (Paz De La Huerta), by...
