Chair of Screen Ireland Annie Doona said that Ireland’s screen production sector has more than doubled in the last decade, and that all the major streaming giants are now among production partners. “The full restoration of Screen Ireland’s annual funding and the ongoing commitment to Section 481 tax incentives are critical to this success,...

Apple TV will produce an adaptation of author Issac Asimov's 1951 science fiction novel trilogy "Foundation", including "Foundation", "Foundation and Empire" and "Second Foundation", starring Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann and Cassian Bilton:
"...in the waning days of a future 'Galactic Empire', mathematician 'Hari Seldon' spends his life developing a theory of 'psychohistory'.
"Using statistical laws of mass action, it can predict the future of large populations. Seldon foresees the imminent fall of the Empire, which encompasses the entire 'Milky Way' and a dark age lasting 30,000 years before a second empire arises.
"Although the inertia of the Empire's fall is too great to stop, Seldon devises a plan by which 'the onrushing mass of events must be deflected just a little' to eventually limit this to just one thousand years.
"To implement his plan, Seldon creates the 'Foundations' – two groups of scientists and...

Apple has taken its first concrete step into the original film space. The tech giant has announced a deal with A24, the independent studio behind acclaimed features like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and Ex Machina.
The pair’s partnership will see A24 produce multiple films for Apple. There aren’t many more details available, and there’s no word on how they will be distributed. Though The Hollywood Reporter points out that A24 already operates a deal with DirecTV that gives the service provider the rights to offer its films on demand.
Films resulting from the Apple/A24 partnership will be Apple’s first movies -- but, make no mistake, it’s been splashing out quite a bit of cash on original content development before now. After its first series, Planet of the Apps, was widely panned, it pivoted — and reportedly spent more than $1 billion -- on a slate of shows,...

More cast members have joined leads Jared Harris and Lee Pace on the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.
Well, they're trying to adapt Isaac Asimov's Foundation series for TV again. Foundation was headed for HBO back in 2014 with Jonathan Nolan at the helm, but that version vanished into space. But now David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles) are tackling the extraordinarily dense and cerebral series for Skydance Television. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and Robyn Asimov will serve as executive producers.
Asimov's core three Foundation novels, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation are all worth your time. There's a secondary group of sequels, too, but really, these are the big three you should be concerned with. Any one of these books contains enough character and world building to fill multiple seasons of TV, so hopefully,...

Isaac Asimov's seminal Foundation book series is one of those white whales, like Rendezvous With Rama, that seems like it would never see the light of day. Not only is it a sprawling, multi-character, and complexly political work, but also many of its best ideas have already been cannibalized by things like Star Wars (a similar problem John Carter faced). So the challenge to adapting... Read More...

Despite Marvel’s claims about Captain Marvel being a human-Kree hybrid, she must really be an X-Man… because she certainly x-acerbated the whole Ulysses Cain problem.
Civil War II is a series about said the Inhuman Ulysses Cain and the problems he caused for the Marvel Universe. Ulysses, you see, was a seer; able to predict the future. He used mathematics to, “determine, to within a fraction of a percent, the probability that certain events are going to take place.” Kind of like Isaac Asimov’s psychohistory, only more refined. In Dr. Asimov’s Foundation series, Hari Seldon used psychohistory – a discipline that combined history, sociology, and statistical analysis – to make general projections about the future acts of very large groups of people. Ulysses’s brand of mathe-magic let him make specific projections about the future acts of specific people.

Jonathan Nolan has revealed that sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar could have had a very different ending.
The 38-year-old, who co-wrote the script with his director brother Christopher Nolan, told an audience of scientists at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Lab that his original ending was "much more straightforward".
When asked what actually happened at the end of the film, Jonathan joked: "You've got the wrong brother."
According to Nerdist, the writer did go on to explain how he had intended the film to end, saying: "The Einstien-Rosen bridge (would) collapse when Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) tries to send the data back."
This would mean that there would have been no way for Cooper to return home or find Brand (Anne Hathaway), and he would have fallen into a black hole.
The film's real ending sees Cooper launch himself into the black hole Gargantua in the aim of sending data back to Earth.

I love science fiction movies and TV shows, but I'm not very well versed in much science fiction literature. While I'm familiar with author Isaac Asimov, I haven't read the Foundation book trilogy. Sources have told The Wrap that Jonathan Nolan has quietly been developing Foundation for HBO and Warner Bros. In a recent interview, he coincidentally talked about Foundation.
Nolan via Indiewire:
"Well, I fucking love the ‘Foundation’ novels by Isaac Asimov. They're certainly not [unknown], but that's a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That's a set of books where the influence they have is just fucking massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that'll set your fucking hair on fire.”

This is probably the most exciting television news I have heard in at least a week. Jonathan Nolan, the other half of the Nolan Brothers and the creator of the show Person of Interest, has announced that he is partway through the development of a show based on one of the biggest science fiction series of all-time, the Foundation series, which was originally a trilogy that won a Hugo for the entire series in 1966, beating out Lord of the Rings, among others for the title. The books were written by Isaac Asimov and followed the aftermath of the life of Hari Seldon, a mathematician who has dedicated his life to developing a way to predict the long-term future using probabilities and the laws of mass action. This science, called ‘psychohistory,’ guides a new government as the old Galactic Empire crumbles and a Dark Age ensues, helping them escape the…

A new television series is in development from HBO and Warner Bros. TV that will adapt Isaac Asimov’s science fiction epic “Foundation” Trilogy for television. At the head of the project is Interstellar screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, who will write and produce the series, as reported by TheWrap. It should be noted that Jonathan Nolan has had some experience in the art of adapting science fiction novels to television, as he has recently adapted Michael Chrichton’s Westworld which was also for HBO and Warner Bros. TV but in collaboration with, J.J. Abrams production company, Bad Robot.
Jonathan Nolan expressed his interest and excitement to work on the adaption of the trilogy in a recent interview with Indiewire.

"Memento" and "Interstellar" scribe and "Person of Interest" creator Jonathan Nolan is set to write and produce "Foundation," an HBO and Warner Bros. TV series adaptation of Isaac Asimov's original novel trilogy of the same name.
Asimov penned the books back in the early 1950s, though followed it up with four more books in the 1980s. The original trilogy follows mathematician Hari Seldon, a man who has dedicated his life to developing psychohistory - a concept that is able to predict the future on a large scale.
When he foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire and a dark age that will last thirty millenia, he sets out to create a foundation of talented artisans and engineers to preserve and expand on humanity's collective knowledge with the hope of establishing a new empire.
Sony Pictures acquired the rights several years ago to the property with Roland Emmerich attached to direct and produce.

After spending years on the screenplay to his brother's Interstellar, Jonathan Nolan is going back into space: The Wrap reports that the younger Nolan is working with HBO on an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. It's Nolan's second project with the network after J.J. Abrams's planned Westworld adaptation and his third TV show overall. (He previously created Person of Interest.) Asimov's seven-book series concerns the rise and fall of new galactic empires; Nolan previously told IndieWire the books contain "ideas ... that'll set your fucking hair on fire." If the Foundation show takes off, Jonathan Nolan will finally be "Christopher Nolan's brother" no more. At least in the career sense. In the fraternal sense, they will likely remain bonded.

The first in the series, Foundation “follows mathematician Hari Seldon, who has dedicated his life to developing psychohistory, a concept that uses the laws of mass action to predict the future on a large scale. When he foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire and a dark age that will 30,000 years, he...

"Well, I fucking love the 'Foundation' novels by Isaac Asimov —they're certainly not unknown, but that's a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading,” screenwriter Jonathan Nolan told us in our “Interstellar” interview last week. “That's a set of books where the influence they have is just fucking massive; they have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that'll set your fucking hair on fire." Hint much? So the younger Nolan sibling talks about the Asimov books last week and this week it’s revealed that’s really a thing. The Wrap reports that Nolan is writing and producing a series based on Asimov’s trilogy in conjunction with HBO and Warner. The three books—“Foundation,” “Foundation and Empire,” “Second Foundation”—follow mathematician Hari Seldon, who spends his entire life...

HBO and Warner Bros. TV are teaming to produce a series based on Isaac Asimov's “Foundation” trilogy that will be written and produced by “Interstellar” writer Jonathan Nolan, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap. Nolan, who is already working with HBO on “Westworld,” has been quietly developing the project for the last several months. He recently tipped his hand to Indiewire, which asked him, ‘what's the one piece of science fiction you truly love that people don't know enough about?’ “Well, I fucking love the ‘Foundation’ novels by Isaac Asimov. They're certainly not , but that's a set.

Jonathan Nolan has been tied to his brother Christopher Nolan for the majority of this career, having co-written the screenplays for The Prestige, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and, most recently, Interstellar. He has, however, started branching out on his own a bit having created "Person of Interest" for CBS and he's putting together Westworld for HBO. Now, he's continuing that partnership with HBO as The Wrap reports Nolan is set to write and produce an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy for the cable network. Here's the book's synopsis: For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. Only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future--a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire--both scientists...

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series of books has been a white whale of adaptations for Hollywood for years now, with Roland Emmerich most famously developing a take. It now appears that Interstellar co-writer Jonah Nolan might beat him to it, because The Wrap reports he’s quietly been working on a small screen version for HBO.Foundation is partly the story of a mathematician called Hari Seldon, who has invented a science called "psychohistory" which can predict the future for large-scale human concerns (so not whether you'll meet a mysterious stranger, but definitely whether civilisation will survive the next millennium). Sheldon sees that the Galactic Empire in which he lives is going to collapse, and that there will be a period of barbarism lasting 30,000 years, but he also predicts that, with the help of psychohistory and a planet called Foundation filled with experts in sciences and philosophy from all over the Empire,...

Christopher Reeve Foundation for spinal cord and stem cell research (photo: Darryl Hannah and Christopher Reeve in 'Rear Window') (See previous post: "'Superman' Christopher Reeve and his Movies: Ten-Year Death Anniversary.") In his 1998 autobiography Still Me, Christopher Reeve recalled: "At an especially bleak moment [prior to an operation that might result in his death], the door [of his hospital room] flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. For the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay." The "old friend" was the recently deceased Robin Williams, whom Reeve had befriended while both were studying at Juillard. Eventually, Reeve became a staunch advocate for spinal cord and stem cell research, sponsoring with his wife the Christopher Reeve Foundation — later renamed the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (and formerly known...
