The Industry Program of documentary festival IDFA launches Friday as an in-person event, while also offering remote access for those who are unable to get to Amsterdam. Head of industry Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen and market manager Selin Murat speak to Variety about what participants can expect.
What was learned from the digital experimentation put in place last year has not been lost, van Nieuwenhuijzen says, and what has been delivered this year is a hybrid. “We know that, for the whole industry, these personal encounters, in-person meetings, are crucial,” she says. “But we also learned that we are far more accessible for many people [through remote access]. So that’s why I’m happy that we still have the opportunity to offer some visibility for [the producing] teams who cannot come to Amsterdam.” The online passes that IDFA is offering are “a great opportunity for people around the world to see what’s happening and to stay up to date,...

Olympia Dukakis, a character actress best known for her Oscar-winning supporting turn in Norman Jewison’s “Moonstruck” and for her role as the wealthy widow in “Steel Magnolias,” has died. She was 89.
Dukakis’ brother, Apollo Dukakis, confirmed her death to Variety. Apollo Dukakis announced her death in a Facebook post, writing: “My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.”
The actress was 56 when she came to prominence overnight thanks to her Oscar-winning turn in “Moonstruck,” the 1987 film in which she played, with an extraordinary comic ethnic gusto characteristic of the movie as a whole, the mother of Cher’s character. The Washington Post singled out Dukakis for praise: Cher and Nicolas Cage are “backed by an equally quirky cast of marvelous supporting players — especially Olympia Dukakis, whose role as Loretta...

Adam Brody is a natural when it comes to comedy, and the same can be said with his latest film, The Kid Detective, which was released on Oct. 16. Though slightly darker than his previous comedic roles like Gilmore Girls and In the Land of Women, his character Abe is still just as intriguing. The film - which was written and directed by Evan Morgan - follows Brody as a former kid detective who is still solving minor cases around his small town as an adult - that is, until a teenager named Caroline approaches him with his first adult case to figure out who murdered her boyfriend.
Intrigued? So was Brody when he got the script about five years ago. While chatting with Popsugar, the actor said he was immediately drawn to the project because of Morgan's writing. "He's just got a great, specific, super funny, super sharp, very poetic and deep writing style,...

Ron Howard is teasing a Willow television series for Disney+, whose greenlight he awaits as development commences.
Willow, director Ron Howard’s highly-touted 1988 fantasy flick, was supposed to be the next E.T.; a title to which it laid claim bearing a story from George Lucas, an at-the-time substantial $35 million budget and magical themes that were tailor-made for family consumption at theaters. However, while the film fell short of phone-home-level box office grosses, it was widely acclaimed, and has since maintained a fanbase, one that might soon be mollified with a Disney+ TV revival.
A sequel television series for Willow is in development, as Howard reveals to Collider in a Sundance Film Festival sit-down interview. In another example of second-generation scribes taking classic franchise reins, Jonathan Kasdan, son of legendary Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan, is writing the Willow series, set as showrunner. Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka has been joined by Meg Ryan and Moonrise Kingdom‘s Kara Hayward in Fan Girl, about a 15-year-old post-Millennial teen who lives for making movies and idolizing her favorite band. Pop punk band All Time Low lends its music to the Fan Girl soundtrack and will also appear as themselves. Scott Adsit (30 Rock, Big Hero 6), Joshua Boone, and Bill Sage (We Are What We Are) also star. Debuting at SXSW next month, Some Girl(s) sees Adam Brody take the lead for the dramatic comedy. Given that we all-too-rarely get to see Brody take up a leading role, this is definitely a must-see film for those heading out to Texas, and I’m hoping it will be a smooth road to distribution later this year.
Starring alongside Brody is a brilliant cast of female past loves, and we have our first look here of Brody with his best friend’s little sister, Reggie, played by the rising young Zoe Kazan.

This is certainly the case with the two main characters, Dave Hodgman and Aubrey Miller, in the new romantic comedy-drama ‘The First Time.’ The instant connection between the two makes them realize they [ Read More ]

The new indie romantic drama The First Time is the sophomore feature film from writer/director Jon Kasdan ( In the Land of Women ), pairing Britt Robertson ("The Secret Circle") and Dylan O'Brien ("Teen Wolf") as Aubrey and Dave, two high school seniors who, after meeting each another one night outside a party, slowly begin to form their first serious relationship. ComingSoon.net spoke with Kasdan, Robertson and O'Brien about their film's honest, open take on young love, a subject that Kasdan, the son of director Lawrence Kasdan, previously tackled as a writer on the short-lived but much-lauded "Freak and Geeks." Also starring Victoria Justice, James Frecheville, Craig Roberts, Joshua Malina, Halston Sage, Maggie Jones and Adam Sevani, The First...

It's about, you know, falling in love or whatever
Unrequited love. Youth. Pool Parties. Such are a few of the tenets of the American teenage experience and the world that encompasses The First Time, the sophomore feature from director Jonathan Kasdan, whose first movie, In the Land of Women skyrocketed Kristen Stewart to fame and fortune (or was that Twilight?). The First Time follows high school senior Dave (Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien), whose trying to woo his friend and dream girl Jane (Victorious' Victoria Justice) until he meets Aubrey (Scream 4's Britt Robertson) and falls in love. Only trouble is, Aubrey is already with the older Ronny (Animal Kingdom's James Frecheville). That's, like, a love square!

If there’s one genre that will never go out of style, it’s the coming-of-age film. On the heels of the theatrical release of “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower” -- which we greatly enjoyed -- is a trailer for the upcoming Sundance-tipped and Jon Kasdan-helmed film “The First Time.” Written and directed by Kasdan -- yes, son of that Kasdan -- the film focuses on the burgeoning romance between two virginal teens as they navigate the hormone-fueled rough waters of adolescence. With the cast of teen stars -- Dylan O’Brien, Britt Robertson, Craig Roberts and Victoria Justice -- and based on Kasdan’s previous effort, the cloying “In The Land Of Women,” we can’t really see how the film will resist falling into typical teen-film shmaltz. Though, to be fair, it was an official selection for Sundance earlier this year, so the committee must have seen something in the film.

In the Land of Women director Jon Kasdan has finished a new movie, and those of you who are unabashed fans of high school flicks should find it to be pretty appealing. The First Time looks like such a typical teenage drama that it might very well be made up of a patchwork of scenes from past teen movies that you already know and love. I’m not sure if anyone would notice. There’s the guy with the hopeless crush on the girl who just sees him as a friend, the girl who spends every waking moment obsessing over her status as a virgin, and whether or not she’s ready to end it. There’s the creepy older guy scamming on high school girls, and the kid in the glasses, who isn’t going to get to have a romantic subplot, but who is mostly just there to say something funny every once in a...

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Directed by: Andrew Stanton
Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong
Running Time: 2 hrs 12 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 9, 2012
Plot: Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch) is suddenly transported to Mars, where he finds himself in the middle of another battle. He encounters a princess who tries to convince John he could change the tide of the war.
Who’S It For?: Fans of science fiction writer Edgar Rice Burroughs ought to get in line immediately, and buy tickets for the second showing. Not because they’ll necessarily fall in love with this high budget carnation, but because they’re probably the biggest hope Disney has of helping this $250 million wannabe blockbuster make its mark. If you like science fiction movies, or action movies, this still isn’t an immediate recommendation for you. This movie would definitely give Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds a brain aneurysm.

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is over, and film industry types and journalists have returned home with a pretty good idea of what the indie scene will look like this year.
But what about you, dear reader, who didn't get the chance to play in Park City and mingle with bundled-up celebs? Have no fear. Our intrepid NextMovie Sundance team braved long lines, snow drifts, crowded screenings and press junkets to bring you the 20 films we loved at Sundance this year -- and that may soon be coming to a theater near you. -- By Todd Gilchrist, Jason Guerrasio, Jenni Miller and Nigel Smith

Movies about teenage strife are incredibly hard to get right. Blame it on John Hughes. Blame it on the suburbs. Blame it on the Sundance Film Festival. Plainly put, if you are not an upper middle class white teenager, it’s very hard to sympathize with an upper middle class, white teenager.
The First Time, written and directed by Jonathan Kasdan (In The Land Of Women), is determined for its two leads, Aubrey (Britt Robertson) and Dave (Dylan O’Brien), to convince you they’re worth caring about.
Robertson is a young force to be reckoned with, playing the precious and super-duper coolness of her character down enough to appear equal parts mythical and believable. Unfortunately, O’Brien can’t keep up next to her performance. He never becomes much more than a handsome, constantly-concerned face.
Employing the Before Sunrise model, Kasdan’s sophomore effort takes place over one L.

Honesty and contrivance do an uneasy dance in The First Time. Jonathan Kasdan’s second feature, after In the Land of Women in 2007, genuinely aims to capture the nervousness, hesitation, insecurity and excitement surrounding a mutual loss of virginity between two teenagers. At the same time, however, the writer-director lards the sincerity with so much mild shtick and goofing around that the film’s tone falls somewhere midway between an earnest student-written play and an R-rated studio sex comedy. Kids in their late teens, especially girls, would likely respond well to the film’s sensitivity and TV-familiar

[1] The First Time is the kind of movie I hope to see at Sundance each year -- a coming of age story which is smart, funny, and able to touch your soul. On Twitter I called the film an indie Can't Hardly Wait for a new generation, and while I'm not sure that comparison is completely valid I'm going to go with it. The story is not set over the course of one night, but instead over the course of one weekend. While Wait was primarily set at a party, a high school party is the starting point for The First Time. This is where Dave Hodgman (Dylan O'Brien) meets Aubrey Miller (Britt Robertson) for the first time. Dave is an awkward, hopeless romantic who has been pining to someday go out with his best friend: the beautiful and popular Jane Harmon (Victoria Justice), who sees Dave as nothing more than the sweet caring.

Sundance has a rich tradition of premiering great on-screen romances, as far back as Linklater’s Before Sunrise in 1995, and more recently with Like Crazy, last year’s Grand Jury Prize winner. Carrying this torch into the 2012 Festival is The First Time, the sophomore effort from director Jonathan Kasdan (In the Land of Women). A meditation on the excitement, anticipation, and unavoidable angst of young love, First Time stars Dylan O’Brien and Britt Robertson as star-crossed high school students drawn together over a single weekend.

"Like Crazy," "Take Shelter," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "Pariah." What do these films all have in common? They all premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. To say that the bar was raised for this year's edition to deliver the indie goods is an understatement.
We're glad to report that 2012 is shaping up to be another great year for the world's most important independent film festival. Just take a look at some of the talent included on the lineup: Kirsten Dunst, Andy Samberg, Elizabeth Olsen, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Kate Bosworth and director Spike Lee. Two teens fall in love for "The First Time" in this sophomore feature from Jon Kasdan, which will play in the Us dramatic Competition. What's it about? It's a high school romance about two kids who meet at a party and, over the course of a weekend, fall for each other. Says director Jon Kasdan: I found every aspect of making this film challenging. Of course, I've only made only one other movie, 'In the Land of Women,' and that was challenging too. For me, the hardest thing, with both movies, was this - you Never have enough time. You plan, you prepare, you rehearse, but no matter what, once you actually get there, you're racing the clock. And I've never had a single day as a director where I felt like I actually got everything I should've. "I grew up in Los Angeles. My parents are filmmakers.

A pair of films from our favorite auteurs So Yong Kim's For Ellen (see Paul Dano still) and Antonio Campos' Simon Killer are finally making their long awaited world film fest debuts and items from an emerging talent base in the likes of Benh Zeitlin, Ry Russo-Young and James Ponsoldt are part of a handful of lucky filmmakers selected in Sundance's U.S. Dramatic Competiton section. Among the 10 out of 16 we guessed right, we find: Michael Mohan's Save the Date, Ben Lewin's The Surrogate, Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed, Ira Sachs' Keep the Lights On and the newly titled The End of Love - a sophomore effort from filmmaker and actor Mark Webber. The Sundance Institute revealed their Us and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary competition titles today for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The question, of course, is which films will break out this year after the 2011 Sundance Film Festival brought titles such as ,i>Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, Like Crazy and Take Shelter to the forefront. I have never attended the Sundance Film Festival, primarily because I have never heard good things about the experience, plus it means I can save my money for my trip to Cannes where I have typically seen the some of the best films Sundance had to offer including Blue Valentine two years ago and Martha Marcy May Marlene this year. Which means it serves as a good way for me to find films to make sure I add to my Cannes 2012 must see list... can you figure out which ones they may be? When it...

Sony Pictures Classics knows their market well. Loaded with a cast of actors who were ripe back in the 70's (Keaton, Kline, Shepard, Wiest and Richard Jenkins whose career really took off in the last decade), Spc have picked up Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion and have set it for their 2012 slate. We initially thought the ensemble drama would preem at this year's Tiff, but has its currently still in post, we're now beginning to think that unless they adopt a "Kids Are All Right" model (preem at Sundance, issue middle of the summer) then we might only be seeing this in 12 months from now. Gist: This is the story of a woman who loves her dog more than her husband. And then her husband loses the dog. On a wintry day, Beth (Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved...

I came across a few images of Meg Ryan at the start of the weekend and nearly fell out of my chair. The actress has been away from the big screen for a little while (good idea), apparently getting ready to direct her first feature film. The last time I saw her was when she made a guest appearance on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and that was shocking enough. (By the way Larry, just when I thought you had gotten yourself into All the trouble, you did what you did last night...) But back to our girl Meg, Jesopus H. Godtopus, what has she done to her face? People are always talking about Nicole Kidman's botox; she's got nothing on Ryan. And of all the women out there doing stuff to their faces, I think I'm most disappointed in Meg. She was so damned adorable and she could have aged pretty gracefully,...

Having just been recognized as one of Hollywood's most financially successful actresses of the year by Forbes earlier this week, Kristen Stewart is on a roll. LOVEFiLM has chosen her as a member of their "Girl Power List of 2011," recognizing her as one of the "Top 15 Actresses Under 30."
About Stewart, LOVEFiLM writes:
Stewart has played Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room, Meg Ryan’s daughter in In The Land Of Women, and Robert De Niro’s daughter in What Just Happened? Since then, of course, she’s also played Billy Burke’s daughter, Bella Swan, in Twilight – the kind of recurring role in a hit franchise that you could build a career on, assuming you have what it takes to capitalize. Her impressive, gritty performance as Joan Jett in The Runaways suggests that she does – it’s enough to make even Bella-beaters reassess – but the movie didn’t bring in a wide audience.

Meg Ryan will be making her directorial debut with Into The Beautiful, Variety is reporting.
The film is to be a comedy-drama, scripted by Anne Meredith, a relatively little-known writer, who was part of the team that wrote Rated X, the Emilio Estevez-directed TV movie about the notorious Mitchell Brothers, starring Estevez and his brother Charlie Sheen in the leading roles.
Ryan, who is approaching the big 50 mark this year with her birthday in November, has had a wealth of experience in comedy-dramas throughout her career, after her leading role in When Harry Met Sally… brought her international recognition back in 1989. Now, she has decided to step behind the camera lens for the first time, and I have to admit, I’m quite looking forward to seeing how this film turns out. Ryan’s expertise in the genre will almost certainly give her a great vantage point from which to start her directorial career.

The ’80s are alive and well and living with Topher Grace.
You’ve got to see the trailer for “Take Me Home Tonight.” Even if you weren’t even born yet in 1988, there is so much to cherish. The trailer’s barely even begun and there’s a reference to Suncoast Video (and it isn’t the last, either).
The plot? Topher Grace plays a college grad who works at Suncoast Video (ah ha!) and doesn’t quite know what to do with his life.
He’s also in love with Teresa Palmer (who looks freakishly like blonde Kristen Stewart from the “In the Land of Women” days), and when she asks him, “Are you going to Kyle Masterson’s party?,” well, so begins a series of events that will eventually lead to what might be the best night of his entire life.

The King’s Speech
Directed by: Tom Hooper
Cast: Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: R
Release Date: November 26, 2010 (limited)
Plot: This film follows King George VI (Colin Firth) and his wife (Helena Bonham Carter) as the king struggles with his newfound position and the speech impediment that threatened to end his reign before it began.
Who’S It For? Historical drama fans will be impressed with the lavish sets and the gorgeous costumes, but The King’s Speech always has a way with humor. Fans of Mrs. Henderson Presents may be familiar with this type of balancing act.
Expectations: As a fan of British humor, I was expecting a dry sense of humor and memorable performances from the leads. After all, the buzz surrounding this one is that it’s a surefire Oscar contender. Still, whenever the Oscars are at a stake, I’m a little skeptical,...
