Zoe Saldaña is one of the only actresses in Hollywood who has been part of multiple highest-grossing films. The actress played the role of Neyitri in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, which was the highest-grossing film upon release. She then beat that record with her role as Gamora in Avengers: Endgame. She reprised her role as Neyitri in Avatar: The Way of Water.
Saldaña has been a part of multiple sci-fi film franchises. Apart from the MCU and Avatar, the actress has also appeared as Nyota Uhura in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. However, that was not her first association with the franchise as she played the role of a Trekkie in the Tom Hanks starrer The Terminal. In fact, she did so much research for her role that it made it much easier for her to be cast in Star Trek.

Steven Spielberg and John Williams have collaborated on multiple projects over the years, where the filmmaker’s compelling narratives are enhanced by Williams’ musical compositions. Among their cherished collaborations, one that has become particularly special to the Oscar-winning filmmaker has been the soundtrack for the 1993 war drama Schindler’s List.

Spielberg has described it as the greatest piece of composition Williams has done for him. However, settling on one soundtrack proved challenging, especially after the composer presented him with two choices, leading to conflict over which theme music best captured the sorrow of the Holocaust.

Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film, Hook, is regarded as the best adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. The film presented a different take on the children’s fairytale and provided a different experience than the other iterations. A popular rumor suggested that Tom Hanks was the first choice for the role of an older Peter Pan. However, the Philadelphia actor clarified that the story is different.
Robin Williams in Spielberg’s Hook
Hook focuses on the story of a lawyer played by the late Robin Williams, who learns that he is the older Peter Pan. When his kids are kidnapped by Captain Hook as revenge, he goes back to Neverland and joins forces with the Lost Boys and Julia Roberts’ Tinkerbell. Steven Spielberg’s iteration of the fairy tale initially divided the audiences but became a cult classic moving forward.
Was Tom Hanks the first choice to play Peter Pan in Hook?...

When it comes to complex and challenging roles that require submitting oneself fully to the process, few actors can claim to have achieved what Tom Hanks has. The two-time Oscar winner is synonymous with some of the most iconic characters in films like Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, and many more that have showcased his prowess as a performer.

As a Trekkie, I need to get this off my chest right away: the Vulcan salute in the picture above is incorrect. Zoe Saldaña's thumb should be extended.
The above picture is from Steven Spielberg's 2004 film "The Terminal," a film inspired by the true story of Mehran Karimi Nasseri. The story goes that Nasseri, an Iranian citizen, was traveling from London to Brussels via Paris, but was waylaid in Paris when he lost his refugee passport. Unable to leave Terminal 1 of the Charles de Gaulle Airport, Nasseri simply stayed there. He lived in the airport from 1988 until a medical emergency in 2006.
In Spielberg's film, the Nasseri stand-in was a character named Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) a citizen of a fictional Eastern European country called Krakozhia. While Viktor was traveling, there was a violent coup in his home country and its very existence was thrown into question. He was...

It’s usually a noteworthy role when an actor inhabits a character that has an accent of any kind. Tom Hanks would adopt a strong Southern accent for Forrest Gump or a European accent for The Terminal. Al Pacino would illicit a ton of impressions as Tony Montana in Scarface. Even Sacha Baron Cohen gave people a reason to repeat his comedy ad nauseam with Borat. However, it’s pretty rare for an American actor to have roles back-to-back in a particular dialect for two projects that are unrelated. But that’s exactly how it worked out for Adam Driver. Although he’s had releases in between, Driver has had a couple of recent stand-out roles in succession where he would portray an Italian native and sported an accent with the films House of Gucci and Ferrari.
In the grand scheme of his career, it’s mere trivia or a footnote.

Meg Ryan has returned to rom-coms, but sadly, even one she co-wrote and directed is not worthy of her charm. Ryan co-stars alongside David Duchovny in “What Happens Later,” based on the play “Shooting Star” by Steven Dietz. Ryan co-wrote the script along with playwright Dietz and Kirk Lynn; the film marks her sophomore directorial effort following 2015’s WWII drama “Ithaca.”
In the film, Ryan and Duchovny play two halves of the same whole — literally. Both star-crossed characters are named W. Davis, which the script reminds audiences every ten minutes or so in metronome-like precision. The first W. Davis, William, who goes by Bill (Duchovny), is a former poet and songwriter-turned-stockbroker whose youthful artistic hopes are rekindled after running into his ex-girlfriend, Willa (Ryan). Their bickering turns to banter turns to, yes, an inevitable return to romance as both W. Davises are stuck in a podunk airport 25 years after last seeing each other.

Actor Tom Hanks has come a long way since his early days on the 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies. He has starred in over 75 films, won two Academy Awards for Best Actor for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and has received countless other awards, including the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Among his many films, Hanks starred in Steven Spielberg’s 2004 comedy-drama The Terminal alongside Hollywood veterans Stanley Tucci and Catherine Zeta-Jones. While the film was somewhat obscure, many people couldn’t help but wonder if the storyline was based on a true story.

Meet the Parents was a successful comedy feature starring Ben Stiller and directed by Autsin Powers filmmaker Jay Roach. The film saw Stiller trying to propose to his girlfriend while visiting her parents, only to rub his potential father-in-law the wrong way. Roach claimed that he wanted to direct the project as soon as he read the film’s screenplay. But the studio behind the film at the time had other ideas.

Steven Spielberg has worked with many unique actors in his long and prolific film career. But there were only two movie stars he felt brought something life-changing to his projects.

Spielberg has worked with almost every big name that Hollywood has had to offer. From Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep, to Matt Damon and Liam Neeson. Given his experience with so many gifted performers, Spielberg knew firsthand the lengths actors went through to embody their characters.
“I have worked with many fine, wonderful actors who all bring different values to their characters,” Spielberg once said in an interview with Irish Examiner. “I have learned how they arrive at those very private and personal moments of consolidation where they are really able to imprint on a character, to deliver the message, convince us they are that person.

Has any filmmaker had as much of an impact on cinema and pop culture at large as Steven Spielberg in an autobiographical drama which underpins the dramatic threads of so many of his works.
There’s the impossible question though: among his many masterful works, which one stands tallest? Team Empire gathered to vote for the best Steven Spielberg films, picking from a catalogue packed with unimpeachable masterpieces. But a consensus was eventually reached – and you can read the official ordering below. Ranked order aside, taking an overview of his astonishing career is another reminder of just how lucky we are to have him.

Throughout the 1990s, Tom Hanks was a constant at the Academy Awards, winning two Best Actor awards back-to-back for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994), followed a few years later by his nomination for “Saving Private Ryan.” When he became the frontrunner to win again in 2001 for “Cast Away,” Hanks appeared to be on track to become the male Meryl Streep at the Oscars, getting nominated every few years, but then nearly two decades passed until he received his sixth Oscar nom for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”
And now we’re entering a unique awards season for Hanks in that he’s a major part of two awards-friendly movies and yet might be overlooked for both performances. The first is “Elvis,” for which the lead Austin Butler is a contender to win the Best Actor Oscar, and the second is “A Man Called Otto,” which went into wide release this month,...

Warning: This review contains spoilers for "A Man Called Otto," as well as sensitive, potentially triggering content.
In Tom Hanks' wildly varied film career, he's played everything from a lawyer dying of AIDS ("Philadelphia") to a shopkeeper in love ("Sleepless In Seattle") to an unlikely influencer of history ("Forrest Gump"). He's even starred in a very informal plane crash trilogy, as a pilot stuck landing a crashing plane ("Sully"), a man stuck on an island after a plane crash ("Cast Away"), and a man stuck in an airport after a plane landing ("The Terminal"). In "A Man Called Otto," based on the 2012 Fredrik Backman novel "A Man Called Ove" and the 2015 Swedish film of that same title, Tom Hanks takes on his least characteristic role yet: that of a grumpy old widower.

It's been over a decade since James Cameron released "Avatar" in 2009. The fantastical film, known for its innovative digital effects and visual genius, would go on to become the world's top-grossing movie of all time. It starred Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, the paraplegic Marine and hero who gets dispatched on a mission to the moon Pandora, eventually becoming part of the local Na'Vi blue-skinned humanoid tribe. There, he falls in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), the daughter of the leaders of the Omaticaya.
The original "Avatar" was not only the first film to earn more than 2 billion, but it also led the box office for seven consecutive weeks. It has also undeniably played a major role in Saldaña's career success, which includes other hugely successful movie franchises like Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy. Thirteen years later, Cameron's sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec.

At some point in the last few years of compiling The Film Stage’s Weekend Watch column, which seeks to highlight the best in New York’s repertory offerings, we quickly took notice of the Roxy Cinema, a theater based in the lower level of Tribeca’s Roxy Hotel. While the location may not be your normal theatrical venue, their programming leaps off the page: some of the most eminently pleasurable around, driven seemingly by little but the whims and desires of its cinephilic overlords. Where they fulfill their promise is in presentation: this is not a ramshackle operation asking us to sit on folding chairs before a tiny screen displays DVDs or files ripped from torrent networks, but a red-curtained, burgundy-seated single-screen venue with generous concessions and perfectly projected 35mm prints. In the shakiest time for theatrical exhibition we can remember it’s almost too good to be true.

It was a big weekend at the box office as several major movies entered the fold to get in on the Thanksgiving holiday. In some cases, that worked out well, with Netflix testing the theatrical waters and scoring with "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery." But, it pains me to say, for the most part, it was brutal for the weekend's newcomers. Disney had an all-timer of a flop with "Strange World," while Steven Spielberg suffered a massive disappointment commercially with "The Fabelmans," and Sony quietly dropped a bomb in the form of "Devotion." It was, all things considered, a brutal holiday for Hollywood.
Starting with "Strange World," Disney's original animated flick tanked incredibly hard, earning just 11.9 million over the weekend and, as of this writing, 27.8 million worldwide. It debuted to a downright abysmal 9.2 million overseas and, with a budget said to be anywhere between 135 and 180 million, this is going...

If the apparent success of Amazon’s The Terminal List proved anything, it’s that there’s an audience out there for fast-moving militaristic revenge stories with more interest in a steadily escalating body count than anything deeper.
Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Steven Spielberg's cinema is one of emotional symphonies; discovery, laughter, tears, bravery, fear, to name but a few. He uses sound to great effect to immerse viewers in the multitudes of worlds he’s created over his career. This mix traces the legacy of one of contemporary cinema’s most renowned figures; with his semi-autobiographical new film The Fabelmans out in theaters this autumn, it felt apt to visit Spielberg's treasure trove of cinematic sound. Tim: “Do you hear that?”
Gennaro: “Maybe it’s the power trying to come back on?”
Lex: “What is that?”The mix begins with the sound of luscious rain sounds from Jurassic Park (1993), followed by children whispering wondering, fearful questions. (The mix cuts away just before the terror of a dead goat landing on the roof of the kids’ car.) This is a great example of how sounds in Spielberg's films sway between powerfully orchestral,...

Seth Rogen was worried he would be fired after making Steven Spielberg cry on the set of his new film.
The actor was recruited by the director to play a character in his new biographical film, titled The Fabelmans.
Based on Spielberg’s upbringing, The Fabelmans, also starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, sees Rogen play a character inspired by the filmmaker’s uncle.
Rogen, who also directs, said that after completing one take, he approached Spielberg to ask for feedback on his performance.
“I didn’t know what kind of feedback he would give and how that would go,” he said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, adding: “So the first day, we start shooting and we do a take and I go back to where he’s standing, and I’m looking for feedback.”
It was then that Rogen, 40, noticed the 74-year-old director “was just sobbing uncontrollably”.

Bill Nighy has predicted that a famous quote from the 2003 romcomLove Actuallywill be at the top of his obituary one day.
In the hit Richard Curtis movie, Nighy played ageing rocker Billy Mack, who has a penchant for hard-partying, promiscuity and drugs.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning on Friday (11 November), Nighy reflected on the scene where Billy says to a TV camera: “Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don’t buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!”
“If I get an obituary, that will be on it,” Nighy, 72, told hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond. “Kids used to run after me in my district, shouting that line.”
He also told the presenters he will “never be sick of people talking about Love Actually”, adding: “It was a big and important thing for me and changed the way I went to work.

Mehran Karimi Nasseri, an Iranian man whose 18-year residence in Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport loosely inspired the 2004 film “The Terminal,” has died of a heart attack, the AP reported. Nasseri died in Terminal 2F, not far from Terminal 1, where he lived from 1988 to 2006. He was 80 years old.
Nasseri was born in Soleiman, Iran, which was under British jurisdiction at the time. Upon his return from studying in England in 1974, he was reportedly jailed for protesting the Shah and kicked out of the country. Without a passport, he sought political asylum in various European countries and was approved to settle down in Belgium when the briefcase containing his papers was stolen in Paris. He eventually ended up in the airport, where he became something of a local celebrity among the staff and travelers.

Mehran Karimi Nasseri, the Iranian man whose life story inspired Steven Spielberg's film "The Terminal," died Saturday at the airport he had previously called home, according to NBC News. Nasseri, who was also known as Sir Alfred Mehran, lived in Terminal 1 of Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris for eighteen years before leaving in 2006, and reportedly had taken up residence there again in the weeks before his passing.
Nasseri's story is a complex and ambiguous one, though by all accounts, he began his airport residency in 1988 when a lack of residency papers -- for both the country he was trying to leave, and the one he was trying to enter -- landed him in a sort of legal purgatory. Eventually the paperwork issues were ironed out, but Nasseri chose to continue living at the airport. As of publication time, there doesn't seem to be a clear reason for his recent return,...

Merhan Karimi Nasseri, an Iranian man who lived for 18 years in Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport and inspired the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks film The Terminal, died Saturday at the airport, officials said. He was believed to be 80 years old.
Nasseri died from a heart attack in the airport’s Terminal 2F around midday, officials said. A medical team and police treated him, but were unable to save him.
Nasseri lived in the airport’s Terminal 1 from 1988 until 2006. He was in legal limbo at first because he lacked residency papers, but later stayed on at the airport by choice. He had been living in the airport again in recent weeks, officials said.

Nasseri, who also went by the name “Sir Alfred,” lived in Terminal 1 of Charles de Gaulle Airport. He first settled in the space in 1988 after Great Britain refused him political asylum as a refugee, despite stating that he had a Scottish mother.

This Star Wars: Andor article contains spoilers.
Andor takes Star Wars in a completely new direction than we’ve ever seen before. Cassian’s origin story opens not with talk of Jedi and Sith, or a civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion, but with a common crook who’s down on his luck and desperate. The opening minutes that play like a neo-noir crime thriller straight out of Blade Runner soon give way to a very grounded story about the folks you don’t normally see in a Star Wars movie, including the blue collar workers who keep the wheels turning on the Empire’s corporate interests. It’s on planets like Ferrix, Morlana One, and Kenari that we meet a whole new cast of characters, the people who shape Cassian’s past and help him become who he needs to be in Rogue One.

Tom Hanks has lefts his fans guessing after saying he’s made just four “pretty good” movies in 30 years.
The actor has been a fixture in Hollywood since the 1980s, when he starred in films including Splash!, Big and The ‘Burbs.
It was in the 1990s when he started earning awards acclaim, winning Best Actor at the Oscars two years in a row for Forrest Gump and Philadelphia.
His other credits in the 1990s include two Toy Story films, You’ve Got Mail and The Green Mile.
Hanks has also regularly worked with director Steven Spielberg, appearing in Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me if You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies and The Post.
Hanks was promoting his debut novel, titled The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, when he told People: “No one knows how a movie is made – though everyone thinks they do.”
The actor and producer added:...

Last Thursday, a stone’s throw from the former headquarters of Larry Flynt’s Hustler empire, a trove of thirsty teenage influencers, A-listers such as Dustin Hoffman and rock stars including Muse’s Matt Bellamy were queueing up to walk the red carpet at a movie premiere.
This wasn’t, however, the latest Marvel launch or an Oscar-bait opening. It was the re-release of a 13-year-old music documentary about a previously relatively unknown heavy metal band from Canada.
Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, a tale of hope and heavy metal, has been having quite the encore.
The film, directed by Sacha Gervasi, has been re-released by Utopia for a new generation of kids that seem willing to get in the pit for its heartwarming message: never give up.
‘Railway Children,’ Anvil, Abigail Disney & ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’ – Specialty Preview

Another new “Star Wars” series has arrived on Disney+, but this one is different. “Andor” is set years before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and follows the exploits of Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, but in contrast to the previous live-action shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” this is a decidedly grounded and gritty take on the “Star Wars” universe – and one completely devoid of Jedi and Sith and bounty hunters. In short, it’s a “Star Wars” story set in a new pocket of the universe, about real people struggling with the very real oppression of the Empire.
Luna anchors the ensemble but there’s an impressive cast of characters that show up in the first few episodes, and no doubt many more to come throughout the 12-episode first season. Check out our complete “Andor” cast and character guide below.

Nothing screams "must-see" quite like a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaboration. They're the dream duo of modern American cinema, the closest thing we have to a Frank Capra-James Stewart tandem. They've made five films together, and all but one ("The Terminal") are legitimately great.
The only baffling element of their creative partnership is that it didn't happen sooner. Hanks was in his 40s and Spielberg in his 50s when they came together for 1998's devastating World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan." If you're wondering what took so long, Spielberg is right there with you. If the two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker had been able to swing it, he would've loved to direct Hanks in 1993's "Philadelphia."
Hanks Finally Proves His Worth As A Dramatic Actor

From the moment he steps onto the screen, you know this rebel is not like the others. Cassian Andor can be cold and ruthless, has a certain air of danger about him, and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty—even if it means killing an informant in a tight spot. When we first meet him in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Cassian is a far cry from the altruistic rebel heroes featured in the morally black-and-white movies George Lucas made in the late ’70s and early ’80s. As we spend more time with Cassian, we learn he’s the agent the Rebel Alliance sends in when it’s time to go off the books.
But how did this lifelong freedom fighter become the Rebellion’s foremost assassin? That’s the question at the center of Andor, a new live-action series coming to Disney+ in August. The...
