Fox is the latest broadcast network to unveil its fall schedule, and there are some surprises.
We’ll start with the good news: 9-1-1: Lone Star will finally return to the air in September.
The series has been on hiatus for a year, but Fox is expected to give it a big promotional push as it succeeds the original 9-1-1 on Mondays at 8/7c.
16 months between seasons doesn’t bode well for the show’s future, but there’s a chance the numbers will still be strong enough to stay on the air.
9-1-1: Lone Star is being paired with Rescue Hi-Surf, a new drama series that will air on Mondays at 9/8c.
The Arielle Kebbel-led drama has also been confirmed to air along with the 2025 Super Bowl, hinting that Fox believes it will be a massive hit in the fall.

Michael Strahan, employee of The Walt Disney Company, logged more minutes than anyone during the Fox upfront on Monday afternoon. But the Fox NFL Sunday analyst wasn’t exactly the headliner. That honor went to his incoming colleague, Tom Brady.
Brady’s official addition to the Fox Sports family was teased throughout the hour-and-a-half pitch for advertisers — “investors,” as Strahan called them — before he finally took the stage for a funny bit that pitted his social media mantra “Lfg” against Fox star Gordon Ramsay’s unrivaled love for the f-word. Gordon implored the network and the advertising community to let Brady be himself and say “fuck” on air when he starts calling football games in the fall. And if anybody can afford to pay FCC fines, it’s Brady.
The host platform of the coming Super Bowl is always particularly giddy to remind the media-buying community of that fact during upfronts.

Fox released its fall schedule earlier today, and now we’ve got our first look at the new series.
We've got your first look at the upcoming dramas, including Rescue: Hi Surf, Murder in a Small Town, and Doc.
Take a look now!
Rescue: Hi-Surf
John Wells and Matt Kester helm the pulse-pounding Hawaii lifeguard drama Rescue: Hi-Surf.
It follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu—the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world.
Each episode will feature these dedicated, heroic, and adrenaline-seeking first responders saving lives in the difficult and often life-threatening conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle.
The trailer gives traditional first responder vibes, and it also hints as to why Fox was willing to give up 9-1-1. They have high hopes for this one.

The 2024 Fox upfront presentation featured an appearance by Jamie Foxx in one of his first public appearances since his health crisis last year.
Foxx took to the stage and did his best to crack up the crowd of advertisers, a tall order considering the bar had yet to open. He gave it his all though, showcasing his trademark wit and charisma, reminding the attendees “You got free alcohol after this. Let’s get f—ed up!”
The host of the Fox competition series “Beat Shazam,” Foxx not only took the chance to plug his own series but also Fox shows like “The Masked Singer,” “Animal Control,” and the MLB’s upcoming Negro Leagues tribute game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, for Fox Sports. Failing to get a satisfactory reaction from the crowd for that last programming note, Foxx asked the crowd, “Y’all won’t clap for the Negroes?...

Fox is moving “Family Guy” to midseason, marking the first time the animated staple hasn’t been on the network’s fall schedule since 2005 (when it returned to the air after being canceled for a few years). That’s one of the major shifts to come this fall as Fox announced a 2024-2025 lineup that includes two new dramas and a new animated series in the fall, with more freshman launches to come in midseason.
New dramas include lifeguard actioner “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” from executive producer John Wells, which will air Mondays at 9 p.m. Et behind “9-1-1: Lone Star” and crime procedural “Murder in a Small Town,” which will run Tuesdays at 9 p.m., paired with Season 2 of anthology series “Accused.” Later in the season will premiere medical drama “Doc,” based on the Italian series “Doc — Nelle tue mani” and starring Molly Parker.

After airing only two drama series for all of the 2023-24 season, Fox is planning to double that number in the fall.
The network unveiled its 2024-25 schedule Monday morning — after skipping the usual rite of spring the past two years — ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers in the afternoon. The slate includes two nights of drama programming on Monday and Tuesday, a return to Fox’s scheduling pattern from seasons before last year’s dual labor strikes shut down production on scripted series and led the network to an all-reality schedule on weeknights.
The early part of the week will be anchored by two shows that took the 2023-24 season off. Fox’s longest-running current drama, 911: Lone Star, will lead into newcomer Rescue: Hi-Surf, executive produced by John Wells, on Mondays. Exclusive: It came down to the wire but the last outstanding scripted series on the Big 4 broadcast networks has learned its fate. Fox has handed a Season 4 renewal to The Cleaning Lady, starring Élodie Yung. According to sources, the order is for 12 episodes.
While expected, the renewal was not straight-forward and comes with a showrunner change, Deadline has learned. The crime drama, a co-production between Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment, had to pivot and adjust its storyline on the fly this season as it dealt with the tragic loss of its male lead, Adan Canto, who died of cancer.
Linear ratings for The Cleaning Lady — as well as Fox’s other drama series that aired new episodes this season, Alert: Missing Persons Unit — have been down double digits, with a lift of +131% from Live + Same Day to 3.6 million multi-platform viewers helping The Cleaning Lady to close the gap. Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

Fox will keep its Missing Persons Unit on the job for another season.
The network has renewed the drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit for a third season in 2024-25. The series will remain in production after season two wraps, which will bank episodes leading into next season and potentially serve as a hedge against a possible IATSE strike in the summer.
Alert is one of just two dramas Fox has aired in 2023-24 as the network relied heavily on its unscripted and animated rosters, which weren’t affected by last year’s dual strikes. Fox has yet to make a call on the other drama, The Cleaning Lady.

Bilbao has hosted the second edition of Talentuaren Gunea — a Talent Day and pivotal initiative by promotion org Zineuskadi to nurture emerging talents in the Basque region. Set in the stone-panelled environs of Sala Bastida, Azkuna Zentroa, the event showcased 14 projects from students, taking a deep, calming breath before presenting and vying for recognition and support to push their creative endeavors.
This year’s jury panel included a diverse mix of industry experts which took in Nerea García Guillén from Lau Haizetara, and other international figures such as Mathieu Béjot from Sunny Side of the Doc, reflecting the initiative’s broadened scope.
Their insights offered a blend of critical feedback and encouragement to the palpably nervy students. But this was the point: a safe exposure for the students to the ‘real’ world of pitching and being able to describe a fledgling project.

Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”
But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.
The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.
Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations.

Ahead of preparing for his latest documentary The Dynasty: New England Patriots, director and executive producer Matthew Hamachek didn’t know much about the NFL team other then its ability to win Super Bowls. However, he quickly found a focus once the interview process revved up.
“Whenever I have written or directed a doc before, one of the things I’m always trying to do is to figure out the central theme or central idea is when we go on this journey, whether it’s over 90 minutes or 10 parts like in this one,” Hamachek said on a panel for the Apple TV+ docuseries at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event.

Almost a year after Kevin Spacey was found not guilty of sex crimes, Channel 4 and Max in the U.S. are set to air testimony from more men detailing their experiences with the double-Oscar winner.
Channel 4’s Spacey Unmasked, which was announced two years ago but has gone quiet since, has dropped trailer and will launch in 10 days’ time. Produced by Oscar-nominee Mike Lerner and ex-Channel 4 News boss Dorothy Byrne, the two-parter will air on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 May. It has been picked up by Max and ID in the U.S. following a deal between Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) and distributor All3Media International.

"Gilligan's Island" may be viewed as a classic sitcom now, but when the silly series about a group of island castaways aired from 1964 to 1967, it was far from a sure bet for its home network, CBS. As Laura Morowitz writes in the book "Critiquing the Sitcom," the series was "championed by the public" yet "routinely derided by critics." Anything but a classic in its time, the series ultimately became an enduring part of TV history thanks to its seemingly endless replays in syndication. According to Morowitz, it "would come to be the most repeated series in television history."
During its original airing, "Gilligan's Island" was pushed around the prime-time schedule like brussel sprouts on a picky kid's plate. It switched time slots three times during its relatively short run and was finally canceled in 1967. Except, the cancelation of "Gilligan's Island" wasn't straightforward; by several accounts, it came after the show had already seemingly been renewed,...

Hotels are strange, contradictory, but often wonderful places. They are permanent structures primarily designed for temporary lodging. They can offer more luxurious furniture and amenities than you get at home, yet you’ll rarely sleep as well as you do in your own bed. Dreams in hotels tend to be weirder and more vivid — there’s a reason so many of Tony Soprano’s more memorable nightmares either occurred while he was at a hotel, or depicted his unconscious self staying in one — and the setting is evocative enough to...

For anyone in the midst of, or having previously endured, the pains associated with the salad days of youth, that time-honored tradition of finding one’s unique voice while attempting to entrench oneself within the local population of similarly-aged peers as new feelings and emotions emerge on a seemingly daily basis is, at best, an uphill battle. At worst, it can serve to cripple a developing soul in ways adults may struggle to comprehend fully; it is for these reasons that any successes along the way need not be ignored but celebrated; friendships with like-minded individuals and membership in groups catered to one’s passions are more than a hallmark of these undeniably short years and could be seen as wholly necessary to a developing personality.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito continued his criticism of the high court’s landmark same-sex ruling in a five-page statement that gave a detailed explanation as to why the court declined to hear a case that involved a Missouri lawsuit.
The case, Missouri Department of Correction v. Jean Finney, involved a dispute when jurors who voiced religious concerns about same-sex marriage were dismissed from an employment discrimination case.
In his statement, Alito agreed with the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the Missouri lawsuit. However, he said he believed it “exemplifies the danger” he anticipated in the 2015 Obergell v. Hodges case.
He further explained, “Namely, that Americans who do not hide their adherence to traditional religious beliefs about homosexual conduct will be “labeled as bigots and treated as such by the government.”

A 1985 New York Magazine article that first termed the phrase Brat Pack rocked the world of Andrew McCarthy and his co-stars of St. Elmo’s Fire — so much that each of the actors went years, even decades, without talking to each other. As McCarthy says, “actors want to be free of that baggage.”
Not anymore. McCarthy is now behind an ABC News documentary called Brats that addresses how that one phrase captured the zeitgeist and forever altered the careers of then 20-something actors like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Mare Winningham and Molly Ringwald. Even then, it was not entirely clear who was a member of the Brat Pack.
“We took such offense early on,” McCarthy said Saturday at the Television Critics Tour. “It...

Fox is showing early confidence in Animal Control.
The broadcast network has handed out a third season renewal to the comedy series starring Joel McHale, with the pickup arriving a month before its sophomore run debuts.
Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling with Tad Quill attached as showrunner, Community grad McHale stars in the comedy that is the first series that Fox fully owns after the sale of its studio counterpart to Disney a few years ago. McHale and Jake Fuller also exec produce alongside Fisher, Greenberg, Sterling and Quill.
“Animal Control is an incredibly irreverent series that expresses everything viewers expect from a Fox comedy,” said Michael Thorn, president of scripted programming at Fox. “It has an amazing amount of momentum behind it, and we’ve been so impressed by the work Joel, Bob, Rob, Dan, Tad, Jake and the entire cast are delivering for season two,...

Principal Ava Coleman is ringing in the school year with some strict new changes and this time, she means business! (Yes, you read that right.)
In the Season 3 trailer for Abbott Elementary (which premieres with a one-hour block Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 9/8c on ABC), Ava reveals that she went to Harvard over the summer where she “truly learned what it takes to do the job as a principal.” The lack of her usual off-color jokes and the addition of cameras she placed “all over this joint” understandably have the Abbott teachers feeling quite unsettled. Plus, Janine tests out some off-brand curse words!

The official awards for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, held in Park City, Utah every January, were announced this morning with a small ceremony held in person in Utah. This always marks the end of the fest, with a few days of screenings left. The festival played on this week with an at-home online series of viewings in addition to all the in-person premieres. It was a fairly impressive year, with a handful of terrific films, along with plenty of duds as well – and a smaller line-up with only around 92 new films premiering (compared to over 100 last year). The main winners for 2024 include In the Summers, taking home Grand Jury Prize & Directing Award; along with Sean Wang's Dìdi (弟弟) winning the coveted Audience Award and a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble. In addition, the festival favorite is the documentary titled Daughters, playing in the U.S. Doc competition section.
