Michael McGrath, the veteran stage actor who received a Tony Award for his performance in the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It, has died. He was 65.
McGrath died unexpectedly in his sleep Thursday at his home in Bloomfield, New Jersey, his publicist told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death has been determined.
A regular in Broadway and off-Broadway musicals and musical comedy productions, McGrath had starring turns in Plaza Suite, Tootsie, Memphis, Born Yesterday and Wonderful Town. He was also the first actor to play Patsy, King Arthur’s long-suffering sidekick, in Spamalot, which earned him his first Tony nomination.
“Very saddened to hear that Michael McGrath, our first and most beloved Patsy in Spamalot, has passed away,” Idle wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Warm hugs to all the Spamalot family and very happy memories of a lovely man.”

Ben Affleck once allegedly delayed production on Gone Girl for refusing to play a fan of his baseball team’s arch-nemesis. Years ago, he made changes to a lesser known feature when he was faced with the same dilemma.

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

Ben Affleck and Marvel star Samuel L. Jackson once collaborated for a 2002 revenge flick. During their time together, Affleck developed a nickname for Jackson that he didn’t want Jackson knowing about.

Affleck and Jackson worked together on the 2002 film Changing Lanes. The two saw themselves playing rivals trying to ruin each other’s lives. It was a movie that Affleck remarked he was incredibly proud of for its quality and storytelling.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. This week, we examine some films which border on the border.
The stars are here in The Border – Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, Valerie Perrine, Warren Oates – in a noirish 1982 film about the southern US border. You know, the one that’s leaking like a sieve? Lie. The one that needs a big, beautiful wall? Big lie. The one that’s actually a river for about 2,000 miles? Truth.
Nicholson is an Ins agent, one of the guys who patrols the border to keep us safe from those tired, poor, wretched huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Keitel, well, he and Oates are the dark side. You probably saw that one coming.
The soundtrack is really worth a listen, with a score by Ry Cooder and other borderesque tunes...

Roger Michell’s final feature film brings good-natured, Ealing-style brio to the 1961 theft of Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington
As with so many of cinema’s most successful practitioners, the South Africa-born British film-maker Roger Michell, who died last September aged 65, was not an “auteur” with a singular distinctive style. On the contrary, he was a versatile craftsman who could turn his hand to a range of genres with ease. From the classic Richard Curtis romcom Notting Hill to the American thriller Changing Lanes and the deliciously twisty Daphne du Maurier dark romance My Cousin Rachel, Michell instinctively understood the differing demands of each story he was telling. He adapted Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia for TV with great success, gave Anne Reid her finest role in the taboo-breaking, Kureishi-scripted drama The Mother, and directed a sorely underrated screen adaptation of Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love,...

"To us teenagers, she was a babe!" Madman Films has released an official trailer for the documentary film Elizabeth, a biopic profile of the iconic Queen of England. This film is made by the acclaimed filmmaker Roger Michell, known for his many features over the years including Notting Hill, Changing Lanes, Venus, Morning Glory, Hyde Park on Hudson, Le Week-end, My Cousin Rachel. His latest is this - a documentary on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lived, longest reigning British monarch and longest serving female head of state in history. Why now? Who knows! "With extraordinary access to rare footage from the Royal Archives, Elizabeth is a cinematic celebration of an icon that reveals a unique glimpse of the woman behind the legend." It sounds like it won't be critical because it's more of a look at this woman and her life, not so much a commentary about...

Editor’s note: British director Roger Michell died this week at the age of 65. Here, Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker, who distributed several of Michell’s films — including the upcoming “The Duke” — remembers his colleague.
Life stopped for many of us this week when writer/director Roger Michell passed away suddenly at the age of 65. He was a gentle, warm, soft-spoken, eloquent, witty, beautiful human being, in addition to being a strong, uncompromising artist of range and brilliance.

In 1961, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), a 60-year old taxi driver, stole Goya?s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly – he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale. Roger Michell, the son of a British diplomat, was born in South Africa and as a child lived in Beirut, Damascus and Prague.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Known as the Russell Crowe road-rage movie, Unhinged hits theaters — or at least the ones that dare to open stateside — on August 21st. Is it worth going masked and still risk infection to sit in a poorly ventilated multiplex, no matter how socially distanced, to see Crowe play demolition derby in daytime traffic? It’s your call. Even marking on a B-movie curve, Unhinged is running on empty.

"The trick is: you just show up and you give life your best shot." Screen Media Films has released an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Blackbird, the latest film by award-winning South African filmmaker Roger Michell. This premiered at the Toronto, London, and San Sebastián Film Festivals last fall, and is arriving on VOD next month. Blackbird is an English-language remake of the 2014 Danish film Silent Heart. A mother decides to end her long battle with Als on her own terms - taking her own life. She organizes one last get together at her home with her entire family, but of course everyone ends up fighting - not only with each other, but with her about her decision. Susan Sarandon stars as Lily, joined by Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Sam Neill, Rainn Wilson, Bex Taylor-Klaus, and Lindsay Duncan. It's an intelligent, witty familial ...

This weekend, Sony inadvertently celebrated the 18th anniversary of “Spider-Man” when it became known that its Marvel-hero blockbusters share a common tag: the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. That mouthful of appellation (Spumc?) inspired derisive blowback, but critics should also give credit where it’s due: After “Spider-Man” opened in 2002, Hollywood has never been the same. The origin myth of Peter Parker went on to create an origin myth of its own: Not only was it the first indication that the Marvel Comics movie universe would become a juggernaut, but it also enshrined the first weekend of May as the real opening of the summer movie season.
“Spider-Man” remains the fifth-biggest Marvel hit, behind the three “Avengers” titles and “Black Panther.” (All figures and comparisons are adjusted to 2020 ticket-price equivalents.) To this day, “Spider-Man” remains the biggest Marvel title not released by Disney.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we don our phoenix tattoos, we get honest with ourselves, we blaze our very own comeback trail talking Ben Affleck! With his drama The Way Back in theaters, we discuss four past B-Sides you may have missed: 1999’s Sandy Bullock-meets-Ben rom-com Forces of Nature, 2000’s Gwyneth-meets-Ben high-concept romance Bounce, 2002’s Sam Jackson-meets-Ben thriller Changing Lanes and, last-but-least, 2006’s Ben-plays-Superman noir Hollywoodland. In between these B-sides exists the movie star’s career nadir, including Gigli, Paycheck, and Surviving Christmas (which we already discussed in our holiday episode). Conor and I are joined by Marie Bardi (@mariebardi), New York-based producer and avowed Ben Affleck fan.

Sydney Pollack would’ve celebrated his 85th birthday on July 1, 2019. The Oscar winning filmmaker could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has set Chap Taylor to script a drama inspired by the 1962 John Ford-directed Western classic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, which starred John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin. In the original, Stewart played an idealistic lawyer who tries to bring the rule of law to a lawless frontier town. Marvin played Valance, an outlaw headed for a showdown after the lawyer stands up to him. Wayne played a gunslinger who tries to teach the lawyer to defend himself.
The version that Taylor is writing follows the essentials of that story but is set in New York City in 1991, at the height of the crack cocaine scourge when the murder rate in the city soared to unprecedented levels. A young college-educated black policeman volunteers to be stationed in Harlem to make things safer. He’s teamed with a veteran Irish-American cop who, Taylor said, “has...

A little over three decades ago, This Is Spinal Tap perfectly parodied hard-rock excess with a pint-sized Stonehenge, amps that go "one louder" and the unforgettable phrase "Hello Cleveland." The mockumentary, which Ozzy Osbourne has said felt all too realistic, was written by its stars, comedians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, and director-actor Rob Reiner. "The closer we dared to get to the real thing, the closer the real thing dared to get to us," Shearer once told Rolling Stone. "It's like reality is calling our bluff at every step along the way.

It goes without saying that Ben Affleck has had an incredible career. After winning a screenwriting Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" Affleck focused on his acting and tried the Hollywood leading man routine in hits such as "Armageddon," "Pearl Harbor," "Changing Lanes" and "The Sum of All Fears." After three films in 2003 his career began to crash. "Gigli" become a pop culture touchstone because it was such a bomb and so disliked, but besides a minor success with "Paycheck" Affleck started on a major string of bombs that no one thought he'd recover from. By 2006 he was on the comeback trail with a critically acclaimed performance in the indie "Hollywoodland" and followed that up with his directorial debut, the well received "Gone Baby Gone." The past seven years have completed the comeback with Affleck directing and starring in the hit thriller "The Town" and capping it off with a miraculous Oscar run for "Argo.

Director Roger Michell, who brought us such films as Notting Hill, Changing Lanes and Morning Glory, takes us along for a “joy ride” of sorts with his new film – Le Week-end.
As we meet Meg (Lindsay Duncan) and Nick (Jim Broadbent), they are attempting to rekindle their relationship and save their marriage by returning to the ambiance and breathtaking beauty of gay Paris’. Having honeymooned there, they are both consumed by the notion that once back in Paris’, they can reconnect and their lives will return to the way they used to be…..
It seems that while incredibly excited about their travels, the idiosyncrasies that each have over-looked for many years, seem to be exacerbated in their new surroundings. Meg’s love of the “good life” is being tested, as Nick tries to stay on budget with their accommodations, sending her over the edge. As Meg...

He’s never been one to mince words, and Samuel L. Jackson unleased a Jules Winnfield-esque fury (his character from ‘Pulp Fiction’) when entertainment reporter Sam Rubin confused him with Laurence Fishburne.
During his interview on Monday (February 10), the “Changing Lanes” star was mistakenly asked if he received any reaction to his Super Bowl commercial. Unfortunately for Mr. Rubin, Jackson wasn’t on any Super Bowl commercials.
Samuel declared, "You're as crazy as the people on Twitter. I'm not Laurence Fishburne! We don't all look alike. We may be all black and famous, but we all don't look alike. You're busted."
He continued, "You're the entertainment reporter for this station and you don't know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne? That must be a very short line for your job outside there… I'm the other guy. There's more than one black guy doing a commercial. I'm the 'What's in your wallet?...

Directing a massive blockbuster is the dream, isn't it? Not always, it seems. Here are some directors who've dropped out of big projects...
The explosion of the DVD market, and of the current generation of American and international independent cinema, has sent movie bosses scouring the shelves and the planet for interesting directors. Said studios then try and pair those interesting directors with blockbuster movies (a trend that continues later this year with the rather excellent decision to give Gareth Edwards Godzilla to make). But things don't always work out, and ways are parted before a single frame of footage has been shot.
So then: what we've looked at here are examples of where interesting directors were hired for blockbuster movies, only for them to leave the project before the film in question was complete. We've avoided stories of directors not returning for sequels...

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2006, and a further 25 overlooked gems...
With all the major films that elbow their way into their cinemas every year, there's bound to be some casualties among the big hits. And just like any other year, 2006 was dominated by the likes of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown. But in tandem, there were dozens of lesser-seen films which shuffled in and out of cinemas (or occasionally, didn't get a release in cinemas at all) without very many people noticing.
As we're sure you're aware by now, these lists aim to redress the balance a little, and hopefully introduce a few films from any given year that you may have missed. There are also one or two films that, although...

Shot entirely on a Nokia Lumia 1020, this short film is rather fab and may even bring a tear to your eye! It stars singer / songwriter Ellie Goulding who plays Issy, wannabe music artist who lacks confidence and is egged on by her flatmate Tom. Her boyfriend is far too engaged in his own business to show any interest and it’s Tom who helps her find the form that he knows she can deliver.
The short film was helmed by Notting Hill / director Roger Michell who we interviewed recently for his movie Le Week-End which you can see here. It shows just how event Hollywood’s best and brightest can make a really effective short film with nothing more than a camera phone so if you’re inspired to make your own movie, get out there and do it!

August 22, 2013 will forever be known as the day the internet exploded. After announcing the Man of Steel sequel would include Batman in a surprise announcement at Comic-Con, geek speculation began: Who would portray the Caped Crusader in said film? Would Christian Bale accept a small island as payment and return? Would it be an unknown? An established name? Well-known Bat-film mainstay, Batman-On-Film.com, broke the news that the studio was looking for an actor in their forties. This fueled the flames even more so and, for a moment, it seemed as though Josh Brolin was the man to beat.
Brolin seemed to be a solid choice. He certainly has the acting chops and the blockbuster experience as well as fitting the older mold that the studio was looking for. However, speculation on the negative press that his recent divorce from returning Man of Steel cast member, Diane Lane, began to circulate.

"Here's to the future." Curzon Film World has debuted the trailer for the new film from acclaimed South African director Roger Michell (Enduring Love, Changing Lanes, Venus, Notting Hill) titled Le Week-end, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September. Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan stars as an old married couple celebrating their wedding anniversary in Paris. While there, they run into an old friend, played by Jeff Goldblum, who "gives them a new vision on life and love." Even though I haven't married yet, I still find this trailer adorable, amusing and just kind of charming. Plus it makes me want to visit Paris. Here's the official UK trailer for Roger Michell's Le Week-end, direct from Curzon Film World: Synopsis for Le Week-end from Tiff.net: Revisiting Paris for the first time since their honeymoon, a long-married British couple (Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) run into an old...

One piece of casting news does not a movie make, argues Simon, as Ben Affleck's casting as Batman sets the internet ablaze...
This morning, we set our alarm to allow ourselves a cheeky extra 15 minutes in bed. Predictably, this happened on the day when Warner Bros decided to announce its choice as the new big screen Batman. As you probably well know by now, Ben Affleck has been chosen to take over the cape and cowl from Christian Bale. The actor will take on the role in 2015's Batman/Superman movie, and if the plan goes ahead for a 2017 Justice League picture, you can conclude he'll be in that too. Barring a major disaster, he's Batman for a good five years at least, probably more.
One side effect of the extra 15 minutes of snoozing was that by the time we got to the news,...
