Chloë Sevigny didn’t cry when she lost the Oscar to Angelina Jolie in 2000, but she does still have a few choice words about the Academy’s decision to have Jolie compete in the Best Supporting Actress category at the time.
Sevigny was nominated for indie true story “Boys Don’t Cry,” while Jolie won for novel adaptation “Girl, Interrupted.” According to Sevigny, though, Jolie had more of a lead role.
“I went [to the 2000 Oscars] with my boyfriend at the time, Harmony Korine, and I lost. Angelina Jolie won for ‘Girl, Interrupted,’ which was not a supporting part, I would say. Not that I’m bitter!” Sevigny told Variety. “But it was a very competitive category that year. Catherine Keener, Samantha Morton, Toni Collette and me — it was just great actresses.”
Sevigny reflected on the unanticipated success of “Boys Don’t Cry,” which landed Hillary Swank her first Academy Award too.

One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Jolie received very positive reviews as his second wife, Cornelia. Later that same...

Winona Ryder has previously expressed her disappointment in not becoming friends with Angelina Jolie on the set of James Mangold’s 1999 drama Girl, Interrupted. It turns out, she’s not the only one who felt the same way.

Elisabeth Moss, who played Polly ‘Torch’ Clark in the movie, admitted she also had a hard time approaching the Tomb Raider actress. She felt extremely intimidated by Jolie’s presence and her clique.
Elisabeth Moss Shares Experience Filming With Angelina Jolie
During an interview via Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, actress Elisabeth Moss opened up about her time working with Angelina Jolie on Girl, Interrupted. Interestingly, two different camps were formed within the set.
There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp. Off camera, but based on what was on camera, based on the script. I was in the Winona Ryder camp.

James Mangold has had an interesting filmography over the years venturing in various genres and not typecasting himself to a certain type of filmmaker. Films like Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari proved that Mangold could competently handle various genres with great relatability and emotional heft.
James Mangold most recently directed Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
Mangold continued venturing into blockbuster studio filmmaking with 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which did not fare well. He is set to direct an upcoming Star Wars film and franchise producer Simon Emanuel seemingly revealed the film’s title. Elisabeth Moss has spilled some tea on the behind-the-scenes of the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.
Moss starred alongside Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Brittany Murphy in the Oscar-winning drama about a women’s psychiatric facility.
The future Handmaid’s Tale actress was just 15 years old when she played Polly Clark, a teenager with schizophrenia who also has visible scarring from facial burns.
In an interview on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Moss said that the on-screen tension between characters meant that the cast naturally became divided when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp,” she said. The divisions were “based on what was on camera.”

Streets have gangs. High schools have cliques. Some movie sets, apparently, have “camps” — some sort of a mix between the two. Elisabeth Moss recently revealed how the filming of her, Winona Ryder, and Angelina Jolie’s 1999 movie saw the actors split into two factions that were, surprisingly, based on the film’s script.
Tale of Two Camps: Ryder vs. Jolie
Recently, Elisabeth Moss sat down with the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast and talked about the filming of 1999’s Girl, Interrupted. Moss was around 15 or 16 years old at the time, and she was excited to work with such huge stars like Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie; she did not, however, anticipate that the two actresses’ star power would tear the cast into two cliques that wouldn’t vibe with each other.

Elisabeth Moss recently appeared on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast while promoting her new FX series “The Veil” and reflected on the “intimidating” but exhilarating set of James Mangold’s 1999 drama “Girl, Interrupted.” Moss was around 15 years old when she shot the movie and starred as Polly “Torch” Clark, a burn victim who suffers from schizophrenia. The cast was headlined by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, the latter of whom won an Oscar for her performance. Because of the tension that exists between their two characters, Moss said the film set became naturally divided into two camps.
“There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp. … Off camera, but based on what was on camera, based on the script,” Moss said. “I was in the Winona Ryder camp. The Angelina Jolie camp was really cool. I was intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp.

Elisabeth Moss fully committed to one of her earliest roles in Oscar-winning film “Girl, Interrupted.” So was the prosthetics team.
The future “Mad Men” star Moss was so unrecognizable in her prosthetics, even the film crew believed she was an actual burn victim, Moss said during the “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa” podcast. In the 1999 film, a teenage Moss played Polly “Torch” Clark, a girl with schizophrenia who ended up with facial scars after getting caught in a fire.
Moss’s facial prosthetics would take “about three hours every morning,” she said. Due to how long the process took, Moss would wear the prosthetics even when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“I would forget that I had [the prosthetics] on,” she said. “You wouldn’t take it off at lunch or anything. I would go with [co-star] Winona [Ryder], because we became kind of good friends, I would go with...

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.

Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Lincoln Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.
In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime fighting partner Amelia Donaghy.

Winning an Oscar is one of the most significant achievements for anyone in the film industry. Actors dream of it and many directors make films with the prestigious award in mind. Like many things, however, the golden statue means the world to some and is insignificant to many. While some spend their entire lives looking forward to the day that they might win this trophy, many do win but do not hold much sentimentality to them.
Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
Many actors have won the award but no longer have the trophy in their possession. Then there are those who simply lost it. It would seem that it is quite common for celebrities to not know the whereabouts of their Oscars after winning them. One would assume the reason for the misplacement to be simple, however, it would seem that the tales are probably as interesting as the...

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

The near-constant rotation of villains in the seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided ample opportunity for guest stars, and some of these roles went to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Sitcom star John Ritter is a killer robot in the season 2 episode "Ted," Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar" plays the victim of a cursed beer in season 4, and "Enchanted" star Amy Adams is featured as Tara's estranged cousin in an episode of season 5. But even in that star-studded milieu, some of the most unforgettable performances in the series were given by breakout actors and indie darlings, like SAG Award-winning multihyphenate Clea DuVall.
You might have forgotten that DuVall made an appearance in "Buffy" — in fact, the actor's character didn't appear very much on-screen at all. In "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," DuVall plays Sunnydale High School student Marcie Ross, a girl who is so shy she turns invisible,...

In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. Coincidentally, both women had the perceived advantage of being former Best Actress champions,...

Angelina Jolie has shared that she probably wouldn’t be an actress if she was just starting in the entertainment industry in this day and age.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, published online Tuesday, the Maleficent star said she may have considered acting on the stage but not Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie explained. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Though she doesn’t read anything about herself in the press, the actress knows she’s “just been around so long, and there’s been everything said.”
Jolie grew up around Hollywood since both her parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, were actors. Having appeared in projects from a young age, as well as modeling and studying Method acting, Jolie admitted that she “was never very impressed with it [Hollywood],” adding,...

Robert Rich met Winona Ryder shortly after the release of “Girl, Interrupted” in 1999 when she was shopping at the Marc Jacobs store in the Mercer Hotel in New York City. Rich, who was head of communications for the designer at the time, nervously approached the actor.
“I said, ‘I loved ‘Girl Interrupted,’ and she went, ‘That’s a girls movie,’” Rich recalls. “I said, ‘I’m a girls movie kind of guy.’”
They became fast friends. Now, more than two decades later, Rich is the author of “Winona,” a coffee table book featuring over 100 photos of Ryder, plus a forward by Jacobs. Rich took most of the picture. These aren’t glamour shots, but intimate Polaroids and images that were taken during private times together — many snapped inside the Marc Jacobs offices with other superstars like Kate Moss.

Say it once, say it twice — but say it a third time and expect an explosion of chaotic supernatural hilarity. That was the premise of "Beetlejuice," the second feature film from director Tim Burton. Released in 1988, the film focused on newly dead couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), whose quaint country house was posthumously sold to Charles and Delia Deetz (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara). Adam and Barbara, however, remain in their home, as ghosts, horrified by the bizarre architectural changes being made to their beloved home by its obnoxious new owners. Taking advice from "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased," the Maitlands attempt to haunt their unwanted roommates into leaving — a tactic that proves unsuccessful when the Deetzes remain utterly oblivious to their efforts to scare them out.
The Deetz's death-obsessed teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), can see the Maitlands, and befriends them. Just when all seems hopeless,...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.
Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

Actress Angelina Jolie condemned both the Idf (Israeli Defence Force) and the terrorist organisation Hamas for the onslaught that has ravaged the whole area of Gaza and has created a worrisome situation for the whole world with the ongoing war.
The Oscar-winning actress took to Instagram and wrote: “Like millions around the world I have spent the last weeks sick and angry at the terrorist attack in Israel, the death of so many innocent civilians, and wondering how best to help.

The first photos have been unveiled of actress Angelina Jolie in the role of Greek opera singer Maria Callas in “Maria.” The independent film began production in October under a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement. Will this biopic, directed by Pablo Larrain, bring Jolie back to the Oscars? See one photo of Jolie above and the other below.
Larrain said in a statement, “I am incredibly excited to start production on ‘Maria,’ which I hope will bring Maria Callas’s remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steve Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”

Angelina Jolie has shared that she intentionally began taking on fewer roles in films in recent years.
In her recent Vogue cover story about her new fashion house, Atelier Jolie, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her current phase in life and said she’s “still understanding who I am at 48.”
“I guess I’m in transition as a person,” she said. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”
As Jolie works to figure out what’s most important to her and where she wants to focus her energy, she said Atelier Jolie has played a huge part. She revealed that’s especially true since she made the decision to start working on fewer movies about seven years ago and “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.

The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.
Copies of the Ginger Snaps trilogy Blu-ray box set can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight Films.

Angelina Jolie had the opportunity to star alongside the likes of Cameron Diaz in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. But she rejected it for another project, even though she was told the film would boost her career.
Why Angelina Jolie rejected ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Angelina Jolie | Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
Jolie was already on the rise when Charlie’s Angels was in development. Movies like The Bone Collector and Girl,Interrupted were increasing her star-power. Winning an Oscar would only further establish Jolie as an A-Lister. She had the opportunity to add another commercial project to her name with Charlie’s Angels.
The feature already had a star-studded roster that included Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. Given Jolie’s own status at the time, she might have fit right in with the cast. The studio behind Charlie’s Angels believed so too, and tried to recruit the actor.

Before Indiana Jones entered director James Mangold’s life, Harrison Ford told him he was worried Indy was looking too old.
It was the fall of 2019, and Mangold had joined the team working on the film adaptation of “The Call of the Wild,” in which Ford plays a rugged frontiersman, to help with reshoots. In their downtime, Ford began confiding in Mangold about the fifth “Indiana Jones” movie, which had been bouncing around in development for the better part of three years. Steven Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp had conceived a roughly five-minute opening sequence set during World War II, in which Ford would be digitally de-aged. Ford wasn’t sure it was a good idea.
“Harrison told me he was nervous, because he felt like if people saw him younger, when they confronted Indiana in his 70s they’d be disappointed,” Mangold says, sitting on a cream-colored couch inside...

1999 is often considered one of the greatest years in Hollywood history. From "The Matrix" to "Fight Club," many films released that year remain important cultural touchstones. The 1990s was also one of the most prolific eras for independent filmmaking; the classics from this decade run the gamut from funny, to tragic, to downright strange. Those three words provide a succinct description of the 1999 classic "Girl, Interrupted," a film that still resonates today, especially with the younger generations of young women.
"Girl, Interrupted" is based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name, and follows an 18-year-old girl who checks herself into a psychiatric hospital in 1967. While there, Susanna (Winona Ryder) meets a group of eclectic women who make her question where insanity truly lies: inside the mental institution, or outside of its walls? Some of the brightest stars of the late '90s play Susanna's fellow residents, including Angelina Jolie...

Actor Winona Ryder had turned into a bit of a household name after her starring role in films like Heathers. Since then, Ryder had only expanded her career even further by starring in a string of successful films throughout the 90s.
Despite Ryder’s accomplishments, however, the actor confided she was ashamed to be an actor at one point.

Ryder would’ve never predicted that she’d become an actor. When she was a child, the Stranger Things star saw herself gravitating more towards writing. But Ryder’s parents convinced her to take acting classes after having just moved to a new town. She’d developed a passion for the craft afterwards, and the acting class led her towards being cast in her first project.

Angelina Jolie added another action series to her filmography with her Tomb Raider films. But she admitted doing the role justice could sometimes be a painful adjustment.

It takes some mental flexibility to keep up with the twists and turns of Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 16, wherein Ben initially looks like a patient, turns out to be a detective, but then has to call upon some superhuman abilities.
With only two weeks to the finale, new revelations are flying fast and thick, and everyone's understandably on edge.
Janis's return is a catalyst for some strong feelings and her strident conviction that she knows best conflicts mightily with how Magic and Addison see things.
Like on Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 7, where Ben encounters what appears to be the supernatural, his foray into a mental institution in 1954 is fraught with elements of horror and sadism that smack of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and, most obviously, Girl, Interrupted (from which the episode's title is drawn.)

There’s a lot going on in this troubled-girl-on-a-journey story, which recalls the late-’90s proliferation of books like Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation and Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted. Brittany Snow’s directing debut doesn’t so much add to that canon as dust it down a bit for a new generation, and its success is mostly attributable to its empathetic star Courtney Eaton — the deserving winner of a SXSW Special Jury Recognition for Performance — whose low-key work anchors a needlessly busy film that never quite settles down.
A lot is packed into the opening salvo, from the moment we see Riley (Eaton) sitting on the curb outside a forbiddingly nondescript building, scrolling through pages and pages of narcissistic Instagram influencers. It will come as no surprise when we find out, shortly after that, that she’s been in for a fairly serious disorder she’ll describe variously as...

Four years after “Black Panther” became the first Oscar-winning film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” cast member Angela Bassett has made history as the first person to achieve academy recognition for an MCU performance. Included among the numerous actors with whom she reunites in the 2022 sequel is Lupita Nyong’o, who first played her role of Nakia four years after earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” If Bassett ends up prevailing in the same category this year, Nyong’o will be the 16th woman to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar she previously received.
Until this year, “12 Years a Slave” was the only acting Oscar-nominated film Nyong’o had appeared in. Two of her cast mates in the 2014 Best Picture winner – Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender – respectively competed for the male lead and supporting prizes but eventually...

Paul Mescal is in fighting shape to bring the brawn to dark opera “Carmen.”
The Oscar nominee stars alongside “Scream VI” breakout Melissa Barrera in the modern update to the beloved opera. Helmed by Benjamin Millepied of “Black Swan” choreography fame, the film debuted at 2022 TIFF.
“The Revenant” scribe Alexander Dinelaris, “Girl, Interrupted” writer Lisa Loomer, and Loïc Barrere collaborated on the script. Barrera plays the title character, with Elsa Pataky and Rossy de Palma also starring. Emmy-winning composer Nicholas Britell (“Succession”) pens the score.
Per the official synopsis, “Carmen” follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother, another strong and mysterious woman. Carmen (Barrera) survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard who cold-bloodedly murders two other immigrants in her group.

Passero, who has frequently worked with Lucky McKee on films like May (2002) and Tales of Halloween (2015), created The Weird Kidz from the fond memories of his childhood, and McKee serves as a producer on the film. Featuring cassette tapes and mullets and perfectly capturing the vibe of the eighties, The Weird Kidz follows three friends, 12-year-old boys Dug (Tess Passero), Mel (Glenn Bolton), and Fatt (Brian Ceely), as they go camping in the desert with Dug’s older brother Wyatt (Ellar Coltrane) and his girlfriend Mary (Sydney Wharton).
When the group stops at a gas station, the owner Duana tells them about The Night Child, a creature she claims lives in the desert and took her younger brother twenty-five years ago.

With her Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress bid for Prime Video’s “The English,” Emily Blunt is now a four-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee. Since she already clinched the Best Film Supporting Actress trophy for 2018’s “A Quiet Place,” she is on a path to becoming the 14th female recipient of individual SAG Awards for both big and small screen acting. Given the fact that her 40th birthday precedes this year’s ceremony by only three days, she would be the fifth youngest woman to ever pull off this feat.
The quartet of younger actresses who would rank ahead of Blunt on said list is comprised of Angelina Jolie, Helen Hunt, Halle Berry and Kate Winslet. Winslet received a bookend miniseries actress trophy for “Mare of Easttown” just last year at age 46.

Hot off her 2022 Best Film Actress SAG Award victory for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Jessica Chastain is now in the running for the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress prize as the star of Showtime’s “George and Tammy.” This would be her third SAG Award win in as many categories, as she achieved her first one as an ensemble member of the 2011 film “The Help.” It would also make her only the fourth person to ever pull off back-to-back solo SAG Award wins for two different performances.
The special consecutive champions club Chastain is looking to join was formed in 2000 by Angelina Jolie, who was honored that year for her supporting turn in the film “Girl, Interrupted” immediately after her TV movie performance in “Gia” was lauded by the acting guild. She has since been followed by Renée Zellweger and Viola Davis.

Many an older film discovery will inspire revelations of “She’s in this?” — but none quite like the 1996 indie “Foxfire.” A cult classic beloved by queer audiences, “Foxfire” features early performances not only from Angelina Jolie, but singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis and queer icon and model Jenny Shimizu. It is also, famously (for those who care about these kinds of things), the project that introduced Jolie and Shimizu, who had a serious relationship throughout the late ’90s.
Based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, “Foxfire” follows five high school girls who take revenge on an abusive teacher, unwittingly forming a misfit crew of renegade feminists. They are radicalized by a hitchhiking firebrand who appears out of thin air, played by a young Jolie in motorcycle boots and an androgynous messy bob. Though she had done a few films prior, “Foxfire” established the magnetic bad girl type (and forever queer thirst...
