We all have that one movie critics hated, but we hold dear to our hearts. For instance, Drop Dead Gorgeous has a laughable rating of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film’s pageant scenes and Kirsten Dunst’s performance make it unforgettable. Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards’s pageant costumes alone should bump the film to a 70% rating…at least. A Hidden Gem among Romantic Comedies I was just as surprised to find out that The Wedding Planner holds an abysmally low rating of 17%. Despite its critical panning, Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey created a culturally memorable piece. Jennifer as Mary...

We all have a film or two that, sure, maybe didn’t get great reviews, but we will ride or die for it at all costs. Drop Dead Gorgeous Deserves More Love For example, mine is Drop Dead Gorgeous, which has a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards’s pageant costumes alone should bump the film to a 70% rating…at least. The Wedding Planner Shockingly Low Rated I was also surprised to learn that The Wedding Planner has a shockingly low rating of 17%. The Bodyguard Is Undervalued The same goes for The Bodyguard, which has a 38% rating.

Illustration by Stephanie Monohan.Kirsten Dunst has played a pageant contestant not once, but twice: famously, in the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), then, in a self-reflexive turn in Showtime’s short-lived satire of predatory capitalism, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). In the latter, Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a pageant queen turned widow turned cunning representative of the Founders American Merchandise corporation. In one scene, she instructs a goth teen on a stratagem of competition: “Dazzle by any means necessary. If you want better lightin’ than the other girls, give yourself better lightin’ than the other girls.”Dunst has built a career around this principle. Having started as a child star, she has supported superhero franchises, starred in teen movies and art films alike, and worked in both film and television. In each project, she follows Krystal’s advice, juggling each character’s interiority with bigger-picture concerns. She...

Take a look at actress Kirsten Dunst, aka 'Mary Jane Watson' in director Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy and the star of the new feature “Civil War”, posing for the Spring 2024 edition of “S” magazine, photographed by Danielle Levitt:
"I live in pieces that make me feel good," said the former child actress (“Interview With The Vampire”).
At the age of twelve, Dunst gained widespread recognition as vampire 'Claudia' in 'Interview with the Vampire' (1994), a role for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. She appeared in "Little Women" the same year and in "Jumanji" the following year.
After a recurring role in the NBC medical drama "ER" (1996–97) as 'Charlie Chemingo' and co-starring in films such as "Wag the Dog" (1997), "Small Soldiers" (1998) and "The Virgin Suicides" (1999), Dunst transitioned into romantic comedies and comedy-dramas, starring in "Drop Dead Gorgeous" (1999), "Bring It On...

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2019. It has been updated with new entries to coincide with the release of “Civil War.”]
Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

There are few archetypes more American than the high school cheerleader. Typically portrayed as a teenage girl with a megawatt smile, perfect hair, unmeasurable confidence, and an expertly crafted balance between squeaky-clean innocence and sexual deviancy, our society is still equal parts fascinated and offended by the mere existence of the cheerleader. Sure, films like "Bring It On" and the accessibility of competitive cheerleading on ESPN has brought some legitimacy to the sport and artistry, but by and large, cheerleaders are still used as shorthand to mean things like "bimbo, stupid, b*tchy, shallow, prissy," or to make another girl sound more interesting. As a cultural demigod once sang, "She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers."
With this seemingly "untouchable" social status and implied power of influence, it also makes cheerleader characters very easy to hate. Few have ever reached the level of disdain as Megan Fox's Jennifer Check in "Jennifer's Body,...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

One of the great things about the old broadcast TV model, in which seasons stretched to 20+ episodes, mere months separated one season from the next, and production schedules were thus unforgivingly demanding, was that producers always had an insatiable need for new talent. Filming 22 consecutive 42-minute episodes over the course of a few months? Your principals aren't going to be enough to cover all the ground your story will invariably traverse, and besides, they wouldn't have the time or energy even if you asked.
The solution to this problem? Guest stars!
Series from this golden age of television, from sitcoms like "Friends" and "Frasier" to dramas like "Charmed" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," were powered by guest stars in the same way the larger Hollywood machine is powered by the legions of extras, bit players, and uncredited walk-ons who fill each frame with glorious humanity. It's been 41 years since "Cheers" premiered, and 30 years since it's ended. Although other popular sitcoms like "The Bill Cosby Show" and "Newhart" gave it a run for its money, it's clear by now that "Cheers" has most effectively withstood the test of the time. When the average person thinks of '90s sitcoms, they think of "Friends" or "Seinfeld," but when you ask them to name a sitcom from the '80s, "Cheers" is almost always the first to come to mind.
It helps that so much of the "Cheers" cast has continued to have a major presence in pop culture long after the finale, even if they haven't all returned to the sheer height of popularity they had back in the '80s and early '90s. Even many of the actors who have passed away in the years since, like Kirstie Alley who died of stage four colon...

As far as 1990s and 2000s-era screen goddesses go, Denise Richards was probably the biggest of them all. From her role in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers to her iconic turn in Wild Things, Denise Richards was a formative crush for many of us who came of age in that era, and the image of Richards emerging from a swimming pool in Wild Things was enough to make many teenage pulses flutter. In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity, we take a look at Richards’ rise to fame, from early roles in low-budget fare such as Tammy & the T-Rex to her eventual breakthrough to her controversial casting as nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones in the James Bond epic The World is Not Enough and beyond.

The news of Kirstie Alley’s death, when it broke in December 2022, devastated fans around the world. She was a vibrant TV star, best known for her long-running role in the series Cheers. Alley went on to become a popular movie actor, appearing in films like Look Who’s Talking, For Richer or Poorer, and Drop Dead Gorgeous. In spite of her popularity as an actor, she has a complicated legacy, with her dedication to the controversial religion Scientology making some fans question her judgment — and her Twitter tirades against ex-Scientologists causing some concern.

Have you watched "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion" and found yourself in desperate need of more tales of murder from writer/director Rian Johnson? Or perhaps you've binge-watched both seasons of "Russian Doll" and are ready for another show where Natasha Lyonne attempts to solve a mystery with a lackadaisical attitude and some sharp wit. Or maybe you just want to see Adrien Brody, Stephanie Hsu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ron Perlman, Benjamin Bratt, Chloë Sevigny, Lil Rel Howery, Clea Duvall, Tim Blake Nelson, and a whole clown car of other acclaimed actors all in one place.
If any of the above apply, then "Poker Face" might be the show for you. Kirstie Alley, probably still best known for her work on legendary sitcom Cheers, but who enjoyed a varied career on TV and in movies, has died. She was 71.
Kirstie Louise Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1951, and moved to Los Angeles in 1980, starting a career as an interior designer. But she had already also started acting, with small roles on shows such as Quark , Masquerade and The Love Boat.
She had a lot of success on TV, but none more so than after joining Cheers in 1987, after Shelley Long left the show, scoring many Emmy nominations and winning in 1991. She would win a second Emmy for 1994 TV movie David's Mother.
Other big shows included Veronica's Closet and the self-referential comedy Fat Actress, which mirrored her real-life struggles with weight.
More recently, she appeared on Scream Queens opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, who paid tribute on Instagram.

Today is a very complicated day for a generation of comedy fans. Kirstie Alley, of "Cheers," the "Look Who's Talking" trilogy, and "Veronica's Closet" fame, has died of cancer at the age of 71. With a career spanning over four decades, Alley was a seminal comedic figure and trailblazer for women in comedy. She was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1995 for her contributions to film and television, and her willingness to discuss the systemic mistreatment of fat actresses made her an inspiration to countless women ... until she became a spokesperson for quack weight loss regimes. Unfortunately, she also became one of the most problematic figures in Hollywood due to her conspiracy-theory-motivated presence on social media and absolutely abhorrent treatment of those who didn't share her alt-right political beliefs. The passing of the two-time Emmy-winning actor and "Dancing with the Stars" runner-up was announced by her children on Twitter.

The West has a tendency to lump horror from East and Southeast Asia into one basic but limiting category. Because of this, someone might write off an entire continent’s contributions to the genre based solely on a few popular movies with similar plots and executions. However, Eric Khoo’s series Folklore highlights — not to mention celebrates — the differences that make each episode’s depicted culture so unique. That’s not to say there isn’t an overall theme here. This anthology show emphasizes a commonality among its stories; every tale of terror draws from the supernatural. More specifically, each self-contained episode is based on a local custom, myth or superstition. And as the second season demonstrates with both flair and potency, defying the past and ignoring tradition has serious consequences.
Like other anthology series, there is no specific order when watching the episodes. Skipping around is surely an option,...

“Enchanted” will always be known as the movie that introduced most of the world to Amy Adams, whisking her from the darling of indie films like “Drop Dead Gorgeous” and “Junebug” to one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors.
But a large part of the reason audiences fell in love with Amy Adams is because they fell under the spell of “Enchanted” as a whole. In director Kevin Lima and writer Bill Kelly’s 2007 film, Adams plays Giselle, a maiden of the mythical Andalasia who sings to forest critters and dreams of falling in love. She finds what she’s looking for in Prince Edward (James Marsden), but before they can go live happily ever after, his nefarious mother Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) sends her flying through a portal to New York City. There, Giselle crosses paths with cynical divorce lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey). Soon,...

To celebrate the recently remastered re-release of Wild Things on 4K and Blu-ray, as well as its 25th anniversary fast approaching, we had the pleasure of chatting with star Denise Richards to reminisce about the sizzling cult thriller.
Popular and charming, student counsellor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is no stranger to being the focus of female attention within the moneyed cliques of Florida’s Blue Bay. However, his fortunes are about to change dramatically when one of the wealthiest students at his high school, sultry siren Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), accuses him of rape. The charge looks sure to stick when another girl from the other end of the social spectrum, Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell), steps forward with her own allegations, but Detective Duquette (Kevin Bacon) smells something fishy, and the truth is as murky and dangerous as the alligator-infested swamps in the hinterlands of this affluent beach community.

Kirsten Dunst, the definitive early 2000s teen queen who starred in blockbusters like “Spider-Man” and indie marvels such as “The Virgin Suicides” and “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” once second-guessed her career choices, thanks to one of her peers.
Dunst, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress Oscars category for “The Power of the Dog,” revealed during a The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter interview that her breakout “Bring It On” role came with an unexpected criticism.
“During that age I was wanting to be taken seriously too, so I think that even though it was so successful I think there’s part of me that always checks myself or checks what’s around me,” Dunst said. “I remember another actress said something, actually. She was like, ‘Well, I’m not in a dumb cheerleader movie’ or something. Her saying that just made me feel so terrible about myself.

Tropes and cliches can end a movie -- unless it's a comedy.
For years, comedians used the same tired shticks over and over again to brilliant results.
The difference is in the performer, and Marathon, an indie mockumentary written and directed by Keith Strausbaugh and Anthony Guiduvbaldi, is stocked with talented performers that make even the most tired jokes funnier than they probably should be.
When you tune into Marathon, you won't recognize a soul on screen. Often, that leads to subpar performances as unknown can mean inexperienced.
In the cast of Marathon, the actors come from revered comic troops in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Strausbaugh and Guiduvbaldi even made a statement about it in their press materials:
Every mock-doc lives and dies by its cast, so the spotlight should be on them, not us. Thankfully, we had a company of Las Vegas comedic stars from Cirque du Soleil,...

Production designer Ruth Ammon has worked on iconic films and television shows from “Drop Dead Gorgeous” to “Heroes” and “Smash,” but the one area she has long wanted to play in was space. Working on Amazon Prime Video’s anthology series “Solos” finally gave her that chance. She describes the show as “The Great British Baking Show of Scenery Design” because of how each episode required completely unique settings to bring its story to life.
Each episode’s set for “Solos” is such a focal piece of the individual story, yet self-contained as well as varying in size and detail. How did you approach the builds when it came to whether or not you could work on multiple ones simultaneously?
