In case any of you monster kids hadn’t heard, author James Newman was in an accident. He was out biking with his family and had stopped for a rest. They were sitting on a picnic table when a branch fell and hit James. He suffered a broken arm and vertebrae. While this is horrific, it could have been worse. His young son and moved from that spot and was spared any injuries.
Fellow writer and friend Ronald Kelly is holding a benefit auction to help James and his family with the medical expenses. There are many authors generously contributing signed books. If you want to add some really amazing books to your collection, follow the link below to Ron’s blog for all the details.
This is why I love the horror genre and community so much. One of our own gets knocked down, and the whole community is there to help them up.

Nobody does a season finale quite like Shonda Rhimes, and because of that, nobody needs a finale drinking game more than Scandal fans. And considering Thursday night’s finale quite literally features a bomb, that glass of wine is probably looking better than ever (if you’re of age, of course).
So in honor of Olivia Pope’s love of red wine, we’ve made this a wine-specific drinking game. We have no idea what to expect heading into tonight, but at least we can give you this much. Follow the rules below to play along, and as always, please...

In the midst of this overcrowded month, it can be easy to lose track of all the films that are being released this holiday season. “Lone Survivor” looks to ease the situation by waiting until January before expanding to theaters nationwide. The Afghan-war film is based on the very real and tragic story of former Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell and stars Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana. One of our own colleagues liked “Lone Survivor”, but had his reservations about the film when he caught it over at the AFI Film Fest. In his review, he called it “a deeply intense, detached museum piece” and praised Ben Foster’s performance for humanizing his character “with a full-spirited passion and sensitive humor.” Now, four new clips from the film have just been released to help paint you a picture as to what this movie will be about.

Michel Gondry’s latest film, the Noam Chomsky documentary “Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy," made its theatrical premiere just over two weeks ago. The movie combines Gondry’s unique, whimsical style of animation with a series of conversations the director had with Chomsky. One of our own writers was quite smitten with the film, describing it as “a reverse 'Drunk History'—surreal, humorous visualizations of sober ideas with their own internal logic.” Thankfully, the film’s release allowed for the chance to see Michael Gondry and Noam Chomsky together once again in a 30-minute chat during last month’s NYC Doc Festival. The discussion was put together by Democracy Now! and moderated by Anthony Arnove. Together, Gondry and Chomsky talk about how they originally met, how Chomsky comes up with his process of exploring ideas, and they also speak candidly about their educational achievements (or lack thereof). Like the film,...

James Gandolfini died yesterday of an apparent heart attack, and in the short space of time since his passing, enough has been said about this intimidating-looking actor many called, in reality, “a gentle giant,” that there’s little I can add without seeming lamely repetitive. Parts large and small, before The Sopranos and after, will always be eclipsed by his role as Mob boss Tony Soprano; as perfect a melding of performer and portrayal as has ever graced the small or big screen. All the obits and commemoratives say as much, usually in the lead.
So, what’s left to say?
That for those of us on this side of the Hudson – particularly those of us who, like Gandolfini, are of Italian descent – the loss is particularly acute, almost personal…because he was one of ours. He was one of us.
For all the praise his Tony Soprano garnered, for...

Question: Is Puck ever going to get a real storyline again on Glee? It feels almost like he’s been completely written off the show and he’s my favorite. —Sarah
Ausiello: Funny you should ask. Word on the street is he plays a significant part in the episode that is currently shooting. (Hint: We’ll get answers to the questions, “Where is he living?” and “What’s the deal with him and Kitty?”)

We open on Air Force Three where Susan and Dougie are watching a TV news report on the American rescue of the Chinese sub off the coast of California, then we cut to the White House Situation Room where they’re watching the same but with U.S. Naval commentary because they sprung for the DirectTV Global Rescue Package.
In the hospital, T.J. is in sedation until all the cocaine is out of his system. So, they’re giving him drugs to help him recover from a drug overdose? Odd, isn’t it? (Excuse me while I go mix a vodka and tonic. Still feeling a little fuzzy from those bottomless mimosas at brunch.) Now, where was I? Oh yeah, Elaine wants to move T.J. into Casa Barrish so Margaret and Ann need to spruce the place up. Everyone decides to keep the overdose quiet, especially because Dougie...

Andrew Parker and Toronto Underground Cinema proudly present the Defending The Indefensible film series starting March 4, 2011.
Film criticism is a strange business these days. In years prior to the rise of the Internet, it seemed like only a select few knowledgeable film critics held sway over the fickle viewing public. Now, it seems as if everyone is entitled to voicing their opinions no matter how strange or unpopular they might be. These conversations have lead to more heated arguments about films that in many cases, might not even be worth talking about. Even the most marginal of films can inspire passionate arguments amongst defenders and detractors. With that in mind Toronto blogger Andrew Parker devised the idea for the Defending The Indefensible film series: a monthly exploration of films that time has either been unkind to or overlooked (or possibly should never be seen again) hosted by local film scholars,...

Word around the campfire is that everyone involved in the kick ass comedy Zombieland might be too busy to drum up a sequel anytime soon. One of our own writers mentioned that Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg might have far better roles to choose from, since The Social Network led him to become a mega star in high demand. The same thing could be said for Easy A cutie Emma Stone.
Even the zombie slayer himself, Tallahassee, played by the quirky Woody Harrelson told Total Film in a recent interview that he isn't necessarily interested in returning for a sequel.

We're proud parents around the site this week. One of our own, Swarez, has just released his first ever print! Already an accomplished movie poster artist it is long overdue that the man, the myth, the legend, release a print of his own and we couldn't be happier for him. Titled 'Just say No to the Bollocks' it features that ever lovable combo of Sid Vicious and Nancy Reagan. Get it? Sid and Nancy? Eh? Eh!?!
Those lads with impeccable taste at Nakatomi are the ones to thank for releasing this. Buy it. Buy it now!

Alex Aja's first foray into 3-D horror fare, Piranha 3D , doesn't hit theaters until April 16, but it's about to get a huge push. Shock Till You Drop has learned the trailer is being positioned ahead of prints of James Cameron's Avatar , another 3-D offering, which opens in theaters this week. We're unsure if the trailer itself will be in 3-D. A remake of the Joe Dante-directed creature feature, the film stars Elisabeth Shue, Steven McQueen, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd. One of our own caught an advance screening of the film, you can read his thoughts here . For our full set report, click here and here .

One of our own Chris Ullrich’s favorite films this year, Solomon Kane, has apparently been acquired for U.S. distribution by Lionsgate, a studio known for supporting genre and independent movies. According to Fangoria, who broke the news, there are rumblings that the film may even get a theatrical run prior to a DVD release.
Horror aficionados might be familiar with director Michael J. Bassett, who previously directed Deathwatch (2002) and Wilderness (2006). Soloman Kane is a character originally created by pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard, of Conan the Barbarian fame. Stories about the character appeared in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920’s.
James Purefoy stars as the title character, who roams the earth trying to wipe out evil after the devil acquires his soul and he has a change of heart about his evil ways. The movie also stars prolific actor Max Von Sydow (Flash Gordon, Dune, The Tudors...
