Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best animators of all time, and his work with Studio Ghibli includes some of the most beloved and acclaimed animated films in the history of the medium. The animator has helped change anime and animation so much that he refuses to permanently retire, choosing instead to deliver masterpiece after masterpiece and exploring different genres and tones, all while remaining true to his trademark themes and characters — determined heroines, magical realism, and anti-war messages. Miyazaki seems determined to continue working even if it means threatening the future of his studio after he's gone because he's yet to pick a successor.
While many people are familiar with Miyazaki's output with Studio Ghibli, not many know about his work prior to co-founding the studio with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. And yet, it is in that pre-Ghibli era that we find hints of the maestro that Miyazaki would become,...

Bell Media CEO Sean Cohan, the veteran American TV exec newly-hired to lead Canada’s top-rated broadcaster and local streamer Crave, says he’s open to working with American streaming giants to produce TV shows.
Asked whether Bell Media would consider taking the Canadian rights to an indie series that Netflix or other major American streamers may launch stateside and in other international territories, Cohan told The Hollywood Reporter he’d be open to such cost-saving partnerships.
“Whether we would collaborate with the streamers to take Canadian rights to their rest-of-world, it’s a scenario I’m not aware whether Bell has undertaken before now, but it’s something we absolutely have to consider. I don’t know why we wouldn’t consider such a scenario if the story was right,” Cohan said.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a fantastic return to classic "Star Trek" that uses its science fiction setting to create incredible allegories about our own world. "Billy Madison" is a very silly Adam Sandler movie from the 1990s about a man-child who has to go from kindergarten through high school in six months in order to inherit his father's business and fortune. They are as different from one another as can be, yet at least one "Strange New Worlds" episode is rather deeply connected to the sophomoric yet lovable absurdity of "Billy Madison." While they don't share anything in-universe and Adam Sandler has sadly never made a "Star Trek" appearance, eagle-eyed viewers might have recognized some similar sights in the background of both the movie and the season 1 "Strange New Worlds" episode, "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach."

When one thinks of Studio Ghibli, it's hard not to get wrapped up in its magical, cottagecore fuzziness. Less is usually said of Ghibli's more meditative arm, which produced more straight-laced human dramas like the war film “Grave of the Fireflies” and “Only Yesterday”. These evocative works were the contributions of Isao Takahata. The animation director's career, like his colleague Hayao Miyazaki, reveals a penchant for sentimental fantasy. But unlike the latter, Takahata's directorial touch often delved into conflict and human suffering, with gentle but unflinching intricacy. This week, we explore the first feature Takahata ever directed, that put him in collaboration with Hayao Miyazaki, eventually leading to their founding of Studio Ghibli 17 years later.

We’ve all been there. You have a few drinks. Then a few more. Mate.

These days, it seems like every popular book series is getting a chance to shine on the small screen.
But with so many adaptations, there are bound to be some that fail to reach audience expectations. Some adaptations are just so terrible that we like to pretend they never existed.
However, with the news that Disney+ is officially rebooting the Percy Jackson books as television series, and Netflix's successful reboot of A Series of Unfortunate Events, we cannot help but think about other TV adaptations that deserve a second chance, too. Here are a few book-to-tv adaptations we think deserve another shot on television!

Having an anxiety disorder means I spend way too much time catastrophizing mundane situations like dinner with friends or a case of the sniffles (WebMD is not my friend), but even my fear-focused mind couldn't conjure up a situation like the coronavirus pandemic. To say it's been hard to turn off my brain, or simply keep the constant hum of panic on a low frequency, would be an understatement. But there's one thing that's helped sooth my anxious soul: the Hallmark series When Calls the Heart.
I began watching When Calls the Heart, a series about a schoolteacher named Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) who moves to the remote town of Hope Valley in the early 1900s, a few months before the pandemic began. As a child, I grew up on a steady diet of Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. I love...

This year’s TV comedies have shown that period pieces aren’t just about petticoats and pretentiousness.
Some shows, including Apple TV Plus’ “Dickinson” and Hulu’s “The Great,” use language and tone to put modern twists on what can be a stilted genre, while others from Showtime’s “Black Monday” to Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are infused with references from their time periods that feel highly relevant to today’s audience.
When Alena Smith wrote the pilot for “Dickinson” what flowed from her quill was a straightforward period drama. But that is far from the show she ended up delivering. Instead, she struck a balance between the 19th Century language and setting that came easily to her after growing up reading “Little Women” and “Anne of Green Gables,” and the comedy that came from the titular iconic poet’s (played by Hailee Steinfeld) more modern...

Another month, another smattering of new Netflix titles to sift through. And it seems the online streamer is kicking off 2020 with a host of juicy horror movies and TV shows.
First thing’s first: there’s a number of big-name titles leaving the service next month, including Panic Room, Grease, American Pyscho, and the Spartacus series. That’s disappointing, to be sure, but among the January 2020 titles are news installments of Grace and Frankie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, along with all three Lord of the Rings movies and the Kill Bill films. And it doesn’t stop there.
We’ve compiled the full list below, but a special mention must go to two particularly exciting horror additions: Sam Raimi classic The Evil Dead and Tremors.
Jan. 1
Ghost Stories (Netflix Film): Short films from Indian directors behind “Bombay Talkies” and “Lust Stories.”

Netflix's Anne With an E has run out of kindred spirits. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will conclude with season three. On Nov. 24, the season three finale aired on Canada's CBC, which gets the airing rights before the rest of the world; in all other markets, it's available as a Netflix exclusive. The third and final season will debut on Netflix early in 2020. It's the latest in a long line of shows that, infamously, are cancelled by Netflix after completing a three-season run.

“Anne of Green Gables” returns for its final installment of the planned trilogy with “Fire and Dew,” in which Canada’s famed literary orphan starts taking the first steps into adulthood. Having fully embedded herself with the Cuthberts at Green Gables, Anne Shirley (Ella Ballentine) leaves home to seek out better opportunities and higher learning in Charlottetown.
The adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel “Anne of Green Gables” was split into three chunks, which means the first movie was buoyed by Anne’s discovery of a new life filled with wonders, while the second followed her hilarious scrapes as she truly became part of the Avonlea community. Thus, the final movie carries the burden of concluding the story. That is reflected in how the energy feels dialed down, but it is also about Anne being more of an adult, and thus the fun of her mishaps and outlandish imagination are missing.

In “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) isn’t the most outgoing high school student, but she lives a rich life in her imagination. She also expresses that creative spirit through her whimsical and romantic wardrobe.
This trait has been an integral part of the character, dating back to Jenny Han’s novel on which the movie is based. Several passages detail how Lara Jean will agonize over her ensembles and whether or not to pair them with an elaborate braid, courtesy of her little sister Kitty. Han, who is also an executive producer on the film, wanted to preserve this quality and therefore consulted on the wardrobe.
