My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.
He started out as a clapper boy in the late 1950s, and worked on dozens of distinguished films over the next five decades, as camera assistant, operator and as director of photography leading specialist units. A few titles give a flavour: Battle of Britain (1969); Catch 22 (1970); the television series The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-74), on which he was camera operator for all 52 episodes; three Bond movies in the 1970s; A Bridge Too Far (1977); Krull (1983); A Passage to India (1984); The Jewel of the Nile (1985); King Kong Lives (1986); Gorillas in the Mist (1988); and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009).

If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons then you know that it’s a fun, but kind of tough, roleplaying game to get used to since there’s a lot of reading, a lot of writing, but also a lot of fun once a person gets into it. The only person in a game of D&d that has a lot of stress placed on their shoulders constantly is the Dungeon Master, the person that is running the game and has to deal with the issues of each player and their own issues when it comes to keeping the game interesting. The characters

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot points of Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” currently streaming on Netflix.
With 16 main characters, at least a dozen new characters, and five major locations — including a prison in Soviet-era Russia and a converted underground missile silo somewhere in the American West — it’s frankly surprising that Season 4 of “Stranger Things” has any time to explore quiet moments of personal growth. But anyone tracking the journey of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) over the course of the show has noticed that the kid who survived the Upside Down has struggled to reconnect with his old Dungeons and Dragons buddies for reasons that don’t seem to have much to do with being captured by a demogorgon from an alternate dimension.
Namely, Will seems like he’s gay and struggling to come out.
That impression has only grown stronger in Season 4. In the first episode, Will and Eleven...

"Stranger Things" is always overflowing with two things: Upside Down weirdness and geek culture goodness. And season 4 doesn't disappoint.
We first met Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will (Noah Schnapp) during a 10-hour Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and it was our first clue these boys aren't sitting at the cool table in the school cafeteria. They'd rather build ham radios with staggering range, have the top score on a video game, or binge-watch slashers than play sports, but they're the guys you need when a real life demogorgon tears its way into your reality.

Obviously, "Stranger Things" isn't exactly worried about factual accuracy, but season four of the hit Netflix show does take inspiration from two major real events. The first volume of "Stranger Things" season four dropped on May 27, and both the story of the Creel House and the town's reaction to the Hawkins murders are clearly inspired by real events from the 1970s and 1980s - the Amityville Horror and the satanic panic.
The Amityville Horror and "Stranger Things"
You might be most familiar with the story of the Amityville Horror from the series of films it spawned. But originally, the story was told in a 1977 book by Jay Anson called "The Amityville Horror: A True Story." The book tells the story of George and Kathleen Lutz, a recently married couple who moved with Kathleen's children into a house in Amityville on New York's Long Island. The relocation was meant to be...

Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s defining series. But as the Eighties horror pastiche returns this week after a nearly three-year absence, the show and the streamer seem to be going in opposite directions. Netflix is contracting; Stranger Things is expanding.
It’s been a rough spring for Netflix. Subscriber growth has slowed, and actual subscriber losses are predicted later this year, which sent the streaming giant’s stock price stumbling. Employees have been laid off, and there’s a plan for a cheaper ad-supported subscription tier later this year to staunch the bleeding.

Another trip to the Upside Down — nearly three years later. On Monday, Netflix released the final, horror-filled trailer for volume one of Stranger Things’ fourth season, premiering Friday.
“Don’t try to be heroes. There’s no shame in running,” says a voiceover as clips of the show’s main clan — Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) — join in for a huddle.
“Never tell me the odds,” says Dustin before rolling some Dungeons and Dragons dice.

Immediately upon opening “Stranger Things” Season 4, Volume I, you might notice that the shortest episode runs 62 minutes, the longest a solid 98(!), and the average around 72. Your reaction to this (not to mention the fact that the final Volume II chapter premiering in July will feature an astonishing run time of two and a half hours) will likely dictate how much you’ll enjoy this fourth season in general. Either you’re psyched for more “Stranger Things” — the bigger, the better! — or you’re currently squinting at these words on your screen trying to parse out what, exactly, could necessitate this many more minutes for a show that was once a decently fun pastiche of ’80s adventure movies.
Watching the show’s grand return at the same time that Netflix has hit its first real roadblocks as a streaming service and tech company makes for a surreal experience, if at least a fitting one.

Ghosts has become a rarity in broadcast television – a new comedy hit.
The series, which is based on a BBC series, stars Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Samantha and Jay, a young couple who move into a very old house inhabited by lively spirits.
The quirky comedy, which is a departure from the traditional multi-camera sitcoms at CBS, scored the biggest comedy debut this season and averaging 8.31M viewers it has become the number two comedy this year, behind CBS’ own Young Sheldon. It has grown its audience over the course of its 18-episode season and is also Paramount+’s number one comedy.
The series also scored an early renewal in January, another rarity for a freshman series, allowing showrunners and exec producers Joe Wiseman and Joe Port the opportunity to think ahead for season two ahead of the traditional May crunch.

The legacy of the legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried, one of the industry’s most recognizable voices, will be impactful for generations to come.
“Earlier today, Gilbert Gottfried’s family announced in a statement that the iconic comedian with a penchant for filthy jokes and a screeching voice had died ‘after a long illness at the age of 67. In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

Netflix dropped a first look at several new photos from “Stranger Things” Season 4 on Wednesday morning, and yes, as everyone suspected, Sheriff Hopper is very much alive.
In one of the images, Hopper is looking worse for wear (when does he not) in what seems to be a snowy situation.

There were also new pics showing Dungeons and Dragons remains a big feature in the show, which returns for the first part of Season 4 on May 27.

The new season will take place in Russia and California, and according to executive producer Ross Duffer, some of the theories fans have come up with about the new season are “startlingly” accurate.

British actor Hugh Grant succinctly shut down rumors with a single tweet that he was in talks to take over the role of Doctor Who. “Nothing against Dr W but I’m not [sic]. No idea where the story came from,” Grant said Monday on social media.
Grant’s response comes after a weekend report in U.K. tabloid Mirror, which quoted a “TV insider” as saying the famed romcom actor was in talks to take over the time-traveling role from Jodie Whittaker in a “Marvel-style makeover” reboot of the long-running sci-fi series.
Whittaker announced in 2021 that she was leaving the role and has already recorded her final episodes, with two more special episodes set to air this year. Writer Chris Chibnall will also be setting down the sonic screwdriver alongside Whittaker, with Russell T. Davies set to return to the series as showrunner in 2023.

Get our your d20s and figurines, tabletop role-playing fans! There's a "Dungeons & Dragons" movie on the way starring Chris Pine, and it sounds like it might actually be pretty good.
While the 2000 "Dungeons & Dragons" movie is only watchable with a group of friends and a lot of mead, the new one from "Game Night" writer-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley has some real promise. In an interview with Collider promoting "All the Old Knives," Pine gave fans a tiny taste of what to expect from the upcoming fantasy film, and it wasn't entirely what...

Exclusive: Here’s a hot one that’ll spice up the virtual EFM this week. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is launching sales on Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, which the Star Trek actor will star in alongside Oscar nominees Annette Being and Danny DeVito.
In the movie, Pine will play Darren Barrenman, a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny Los Angeles and crashing city council meetings with his neighbors Jack and Diane. When Barrenman uncovers the greatest water heist in LA history since Chinatown he makes uneasy alliances with a beautiful and connected femme fatale while following every lead he can with corrupt city officials, burned out Hollywood types, and mysterious benefactors – all in the name of protecting his precious Los Angeles. Expect some fun cameos and supporting cast to be added.

The Legend Of Vox MacHina is an animated fantasy adventure for adult viewers – especially those who groove on Dungeons and Dragons and similar forays into the realms of magical creatures with special powers clashing over their various kingdoms, planets, etc. I am not one of them, but still enjoyed the heck out the first six episodes of this new series on Amazon Prime.
A diverse little band of mercenaries who really can’t fully get along with each other, undertake quests for profit. Some of them are too bawdy for prime-time; the language is salty, and the action sequences can be pretty elaborate. There’s even a bit of nudity on the menu. If they have backstories from other media, I don’t know what it is, and fellow newbies won’t need it to dive right in. The first episode establishes the tone and defines the players quite nicely,...

Variety asked bonafide Dungeons & Dragons expert Spencer Crittenden — of “Harmontown” and “HarmonQuest” fame — to watch Amazon Prime Video’s new series “The Legends of Vox Machina” and give his take on the show. Crittenden knows a thing or two about turning his experience as a Dungeon Master into a bit of a career, and that’s exactly what the Critical Role team has done on their popular D&d stream — which has now led to “Vox Machina.” Here’s Crittenden’s review.
It’s hard to explain to the outside observer what Amazon Prime Video’s new animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina” means for the D&d fans of the world. Dungeons and Dragons, the once-reviled and still deeply misunderstood fantasy game, is enjoying unprecedented popularity in our current age of never-ending content and streaming. Cinemark Courts Gamers, Wrestling Fans; Sees Sales Surge, Market Share Rise Amid Box Office Recovery
Cinemark, the nation’s third-largest movie chain, grew revenue and slashed losses last quarter, the first one since Covid with 100% of its theaters open. Talking with Wall Streeters on his last conference call as CEO, Mark Zoradi described a push into gaming as well as wrestling and live sports and events as it leans into the ongoing box office recovery.
The chain held a recent sold out 25-city test with Critical Role and Dungeons and Dragons to “outstanding results” and is testing with League of Legends, Zoradi said. It’s looking at game competitions, game awards, and private gaming parties. Asked about football, Zoradi said the NFL hasn’t “been highly successful” yet since home-city games aren’t available for showings — only out of market. But college sports may be an opportunity “to show big local teams and big local games.”

On October 28, Paramount+, in partnership with Nickelodeon, will launch Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Trek series created specifically for a target audience of young people.

At New York Comic-Con, they were joined by director Ben Hibon who brings experience in animation direction and design to the team. Together, the team spoke virtually with a roundtable of press members about the inspiration and aspirations of their fledgling series.
Not a children's show but also not in the vein of juvenile-yet-adult cartoons like Bojack Horseman and South Park, Star Trek: Prodigy harkens back to the epic adventure animated series like The Pirates of Dark Water and -- dare we mention it?...

A decade ago, Hollywood stars knew their place on the A-list was secure when their film topped the box office. Today, success can be measured by views on Netflix or a vague press release touting a movie’s popularity on HBO Max.
The digital revolution may have changed things dramatically, but don’t lose any sleep over the financial statements of your favorite actors. Film stars continue to be paid handsomely for their duties and are often able to earn much more by leaving the big screen behind and diving headfirst into streaming.
A $20 million-per-picture paycheck has been industry standard for top talent since 1996, when Jim Carrey stunned Hollywood by earning that sum for his dark comedy “The Cable Guy.” That number still stands for headliners of movies made for theatrical release, including upcoming projects starring Sandra Bullock (Paramount’s “The Lost City of D”), Brad Pitt (Sony’s “Bullet Train...

ViacomCBS announced earlier this year the creation of Avatar Studios, which will develop new television series and feature films set within the universe of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” It was a smart decision given just how passionate “Last Airbender” fans remain for new content over 16 years after the animated series first debuted on Nickelodeon. A Kickstarter campaign for “Avatar Legends,” an officially licensed tabletop roleplaying game (think “Dungeons and Dragons”), launched this week and reached its $50,000 crowdfunding goal in 16 minutes (via Collider). That number broke through the $1 million mark in just a single day. The campaign has now exceeded $1.5 million and is well on its way past the $2 million mark.

The Flash dealt out another filler episode, much to our dismay but was it better than The Flash Season 7 Episode 13?
Unfortunately, The Flash Season 7 Episode 14 was no more successful than its predecessor.
Ultraviolet returned, and Allegra was convinced that she could redeem her cousin thanks to Barry's influence. However, all that was accomplished was digging up the past and rehashing old storylines that we thought were long forgotten.
Allegra was the star of the hour, as was her troubled relationship with Ultraviolet -- Aka Esperanza.
Her boss's husband inspired her to change Esperanza's heart and bring her over to the good side. After all, it is in Team Flash's nature to never give up on people.
To them, everyone is redeemable.
Barry: ...I'm zooping Iris away for a little vacation. Actually, it was Chester's idea. You remember?
Chester: Can't forget. As much as I'd like to.
Permalink: Can't forget.

Developer Tuque Games’ Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance is one of the most anticipated games of 2021 for many of those who grew up with the original Baldur’s Gate Action-rpg spinoff series and fondly remember those games as some of the best co-op console dungeon crawlers ever made.
A lot has changed since Dark Alliance first stole our hearts in 2001, but given that the original games got so much mileage out of intelligently reimagining Diablo-style gameplay for consoles while brilliantly utilizing the incredible universe they were based on, many hope this new Dark Alliance would be able to revive that series’ best qualities while incorporating elements of modern game design.
Well, the first Dark Alliance reviews seem to agree that the game suffers from quite a few technical and design problems, but it feels like there’s a bit of a divide forming in regards to how much they will impact...

Only in a fantasy adventure such as Dungeons and Dragons would a person Want an ax to come back to them, and even then be would hope it would be a magical quality of the weapon and that the handle would expertly slap into their grip. Otherwise, this is something that no one should attempt unless they’ve been practicing with a less than lethal implement considering how much damage a simple handaxe can do. Apparently though, Master S. Kamaraj has been doing this for a while and can even produce the same effect with a double-sided ax. The manner in
