Following the shocking events of last week's episode, the X-Men '97 finale - "Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3" - begins with a visit to the past and the moment Charles Xavier told his friend, Magnus, that he was a mutant.
We soon learn this is all in Magneto's head, with Professor X using his immense psychic abilities to force his friend-turned-foe to undo the damage he's inflicted upon the Earth. He succeeds, but Bastion is far from done and still has an army of Prime Sentinels on hand.
Just as the villain is about to kill Cable, Jean Grey returns as the Phoenix (briefly) to deal with him and leaves Mister Sinister a husk of his normal self. However, Bastion takes advantage of the distraction to take the Techno-Organic Virus...

Paul McCartney didn’t want to perform The Beatles‘ “Helter Skelter” for years after Charles Manson “hijacked” it. The cult leader “hijacked” many Beatles songs and claimed the Fab Four were the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Sometimes, a simple phrase triggers something in a songwriter’s head and results in a hit song.
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote “Helter Skelter” after hearing The Who’s Pete Townshend say he’d written the “loudest, dirtiest, rockiest” song, “I Can See for Miles.” Paul loved the description, so he went into the recording studio and said to the band, “Let’s just see how loud we can get and how raucous. Let’s try to make the meters peak.”

Watching the newest film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, "Knock at the Cabin," it's hard not to think of the weight carried by his past work. Though "Knock at the Cabin" is an adaptation of a well-regarded novel, it reflects a number of recognizable hallmarks that are easy to spot in Shyamalan's films. There is a precocious child whose presence grounds the thought processes of the adults surrounding them. There are stoic grown-ups who are sometimes prone to extremely dry humor and only at the most unexpected times. There is a touch of the supernatural. There's a surprise or two. And for some of us, by the time the end credits roll, "Knock at the Cabin" ends up feeling moderately hollow and empty. It is yet another Shyamalan film with a disturbing and effective setup that does not have a similar payoff.

Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for “Knock at the Cabin,” now playing in theaters.
Director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest tense, apocalyptic thriller, “Knock at the Cabin,” is adapted from author Paul Tremblay’s novel “The Cabin at the End of the World,” but the Universal film majorly diverges from the book with its ending.
Both properties center around a family of three, made up of fathers Eric and Andrew (played by Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge) and their young daughter Wen (newcomer Kristen Cui), whose vacation in the woods is interrupted by four strangers who warn them of an impending doomsday. The four intruders are Leonard (Dave Bautista), Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird), Adriane (Abby Quinn) and Redmond (Rupert Grint). Plagued by apocalyptic visions that appear to come true, they tie up Eric, Andrew and Wen and demand that the family sacrifices one of its own to prevent the end of the world.

Ben Falcone is the Chosen One. On Friday, Netflix released the trailer for its upcoming comedy series “God’s Favorite Idiot,” in which Falcone stars alongside his wife Melissa McCarthy.
The series follows Falcone’s Clark Thompson, a mid-level tech support employee, who takes saunas with his dad, Gene (Kevin Dunn), pines after his co-worker Amily (McCarthy), and loves his cats. When he starts to glow, he begins to realize this isn’t an average day at the office and God has bigger plans for him.
In the trailer, which you can watch above, Clark is struck by lightning — and Amily witnesses it. The next day, she races to work to tell their co-workers what happened.
“I saw something crazy last night, and I do want to just be completely open and honest,” she says. “Yes, I did cocaine twice last week, but I did zero cocaine preceding the event I’m about to describe.

Yvette Mimieux was found dead this morning, a rep for her family confirmed. She had just turned 80 on January 10, and she passed away in her sleep of natural causes.
Mimieux was a prolific actress who is best remembered for starring opposite Rod Taylor in the 1960 George Pal-directed film version of the H.G. Wells novel The Time Machine at MGM where she was soon put under a long term contract. Another big hit came months after in Where The Boys Are. Among her other credits around that time were Platinum High School, Mr. Lucky, Where the Boys Are, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Light in the Piazza. The latter garnered her strong reviews for playing a mentally disabled girl and the time she said, “I supposed I have a soulful quality. I was often cast as a wounded person, the ‘sensitive’ role.

In “Silent Night,” first-time writer-director Camille Griffin wickedly weaves together holiday-movie and end-of-the-world–movie tropes, but once the shock of that juxtaposition wears off, we’re left with a slightly underboiled pudding, despite a sharp ensemble’s most valiant efforts.
Part “When the Wind Blows” (the grim 1986 animated feature about Brits keeping calm and carrying on in the face of nuclear disaster) and part “Peter’s Friends” (Kenneth Branagh’s 1992 comedy about school chums gathering in a big house for the holidays to drink too much and open old wounds), “Silent Night” assembles a group of family and friends to celebrate Christmas — only at midnight, Santa isn’t coming. Instead, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are scheduled.
Nell (Keira Knightley) and Simon (Matthew Goode) are hosting Christmas in their charming country home, and as usual they’ve invited their closest friends: upper-class twits Tony and Sandra, abrasive Bella and her soft-spoken girlfriend Alex,...

When the coronavirus shut down the world down last year, two things gave Bruce Dickinson some peace of mind: Iron Maiden had finished recording their upcoming 17th album, Senjutsu, in 2019, and he could quarantine with “somebody I actually like,” his girlfriend. It all went pretty well for a little bit.
“The sun was out for the first part of it, and it was like a novelty at first,” the singer says in his typically upbeat way via a Zoom call. “I was stuck in Paris in my girlfriend’s apartment,...

Frederic (Henry Czerny), a former priest, is always watching the skies. About halfway through Mark O’Brien’s uneasy little fable, he’s asked about his thoughts on the Devil. But it’s not the Devil he fears. It’s God.
In the earliest texts of the Abrahamic religions, there is no Devil as he’s thought of today. There doesn’t need to be. God is recognised as terrible in His wrath, and for a good number of those who study this theology as well as adhering to it, this remains the case. After all, it is not the Devil who will ultimately cast Judgement, not the Devil who will unleash the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Free will, Frederic notes, allows us to choose our own paths; if we fall into temptation, that is our own responsibility.
Frederic is in a dark place when this film opens. He and...

Iron Maiden have unleashed their new video for “The Writing on the Wall,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-bound heavy metal act’s first new music in six years.
The video is an animated retelling of Bible stories like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Moses parting the Red Sea (or in this case, a deadly forcefield) with four cloaked motorcyclists — under the direction of Iron Maiden’s ghoulish mascot Eddie — bringing death, destruction, and plague to the dystopian world’s oppressors.

It seems strange to call a Zack Snyder movie nostalgic. Over the last decade the director has spent all his energy operating within the superhero industrial complex, dunking his caped crusaders into the same slow-motion, washed-out dye that defines his grand and mythically inspired aesthetic. Snyder’s spectacles repeatedly grapple with the burdens of power and sacrifice on a global scale; they depict heroism soaked in a bath of self-seriousness and hypermasculinity. It’s a water weight that comes with the price of admission. Which is to say Snyder’s movies—from the blood-spattered murals of 300 to his cult-backed, four-hour Justice League director’s cut—have become rather predictable affairs, blurred together by their sepia-toned iconography and brooding subject matter.
But Army of the Dead, his new zombie-heist, Netflix-produced carnival ride, offers something of a callback to the filmmaker’s monster-genre roots. For the first time since his Dawn of the Dead retread,...

One of the most anticipated re-releases of the year is Janus Films’ 35th anniversary restoration of Elem Klimov’s gut-wrenching World War II saga Come and See, a coming-of-age film from hell if ever there was one. If one visual stands out in Klimov’s masterpiece it is the haunted face of its star Aleksey Kravchenko staring directly into the camera. Kravchenko was only 14 when he starting filming but he seems to age visibly before your eyes during the film’s 142 minute running time. That face has naturally been the basis of most of the best posters for the film over the years, most especially Igor Pavlovich Lemeshev’s superb design above in which the title is printed in tiny letters between Kravchenko’s seen-it-all eyes. Sovexportfilm used Lemeshev’s poster in various international territories and it is to my mind one of the all-time great movie posters.Janus Films’ 2020 U.

If I haven’t made it clear in previous articles or on social media, let me do so now: I’m a firm believer that Lucio Fulci is one of, if not the, greatest horror directors to ever live. While dismissed as a schlock artist by critics in his time, Fulci’s unique brand of horror, borne from a holy fusion of market-friendly gore and surrealist pure cinema, has aged remarkably well. But before he mingled among zombies or cracked open the gates of hell, Fulci directed a few violent giallo films, including the incredibly depressing Don’t Torture a Duckling, which recently received a new restoration and Blu-ray release from Arrow Video.
Don’t Torture a Duckling isn’t your usual giallo. While it has all of the signatures of the sub-genre—red herrings, black gloves, sexuality—the conventions and tropes are slightly skewed. Instead of taking place in...

They collaborated creatively through multiple decades, creating cinematic magic on the screen that still resonates with horror fans today. As far as one-two punches go when it comes to directors and composers, Lucio Fulci and Fabio Frizzi pack a huge wallop, and in the years since Fulci's passing in 1996, Frizzi has kept the spirit of Fulci's movies alive through his music, including recent live performances of his scores, two of which will take place on October 29th and the 30th at the New York City's Music Hall of Williamsburg. Ahead of the anticipated shows, I had the honor of catching up with Frizzi for our latest Q&A to talk about the joys of performing live, collaborating with Fulci, The Beyond Composer's Cut, and more.

Lucio Fulci’s Don’T Torture A Duckling (1972) will be available on Blu-ray September 12th from Arrow Video
From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore (The Psychic, The Beyond), comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece Don’t Torture a Duckling.
When the sleepy rural village of Accendura is rocked by a series of murders of young boys, the superstitious locals are quick to apportion blame, with the suspects including the local “witch”, Maciara (Florinda Bolkan, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin). With the bodies piling up and the community gripped by panic and a thirst for bloody vengeance, two outsiders – city journalist Andrea (Tomas Milian, The Four of the Apocalypse) and spoilt rich girl Patrizia (Barbara Bouchet, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) – team up to crack the case.
