A queen of daytime TV could have been the inaugural Golden Bachelorette. Susan Lucci, who spent four decades playing Erica Kane on the soap All My Children, says she was approached to star in The Golden Bachelorette’s first season. “I believe that they contacted my publicist,” Lucci told People. “I didn’t pursue [it] when they called my publicist to see if I would be interested. It wasn’t for me, but I do love watching. I’m a fan. I love watching.” Lucci explained that she started watching The Bachelor after her assistant said one night that she was going home to watch the ABC reality show. “The first time I watched it was that night a couple seasons ago,” Lucci said. “I was immediately engaged. I cared. I wanted to know more about these people.” The Daytime Emmy winner also tuned in to watch The Golden Bachelor as...

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

It’s been seven years since Melissa Schuman went public with her allegation that Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter sexually assaulted her in a blog post titled, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anybody,” but she is still feeling the after-effects of making her story known to the world. In ID’s new docuseries Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter, which premiered with its first episode on Monday night, the former Dream singer shared the gutwrenching details of the night she was allegedly raped by the then-pop superstar. In the premiere, Schuman revealed that she was first inspired to speak out about the incident after discovering a Radar Online story about Carter’s alleged sexual assault of a fan, which she felt was very similar to her own experience that’d been haunting her for years. Not only did she recite agonizing details of the night in question in Fallen Idols,...

In an Instagram post Monday, Jimmy Kimmel expressed appreciation for the “hard-working” staff at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, thanking many of Billy’s doctors and nurses by name for their “immeasurable kindness and expertise.”
“We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear, and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid,” wrote Kimmel. He went on to thank his wife, Molly McNearney, “for being stronger than is reasonable for any Mom to be,” and Billy himself, who he called “the toughest (and funniest) 7 year-old we know.”

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains mild spoilers for “The Sympathizer,” Episode 7, “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?”]
In the end, “The Sympathizer” was not a show that kept things simple. An adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel, the HBO limited series helmed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar concludes in a way that reframes the events of its premiere episodes, and eventually arrives at a thesis that helps ease the protagonist’s internal tug-of-war.
According to star Hoa Xuande, putting an emphasis on the “nothing” in the phrase “Nothing is more important than independence and freedom” makes his character The Captain, a Communist spy embedded in the South Vietnamese army, who begins to lose himself when he’s forced to follow that community in exile in the United States, “realize that he’s been fighting for these things that have been out of his reach, that are just ideals that are unobtainable, and that...

We had fleshed out a lot of what we wanted to see in the season and thought that we could tell this story on a long arc because it was such a short season and we’d tell some of those stories in Season 8. We had to reconfigure what we could tell and what we’d have to leave on the table.” Co-showrunner Peter Paige shares that having to cut many storylines “absolutely was tough. A year after the Hollywood strikes turned Emmy campaigning into a bit of a muted endeavor, For Your Consideration events are back in a big way for 2024. The networks, studios and streamers have already launched a bevy of activations to celebrate their awards contenders, on top of the usual round of panels, with their stars back on stage front and center.
What a difference a year makes. In 2023, FYC events were forced to pivot when the Writers Guild strike got underway on May 2 — right as campaigning was kicking into high gear. In most cases, series stars didn’t feel comfortable continuing with events.

There have been numerous medical dramas on television, and 10 years ago, on May 27, 2014, The Night Shift joined that list. The NBC drama, with a cast including Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey, Jr., Jeananne Goossen, and Scott Wolf, ran four seasons and for three of them was a welcome addition to the summer lineup (the second aired in the spring). Created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the drama followed the lives of the staff who work the late night shift in the emergency room at San Antonio Memorial Hospital, and according to Macken, who was last seen on La Brea (which ended after three seasons on NBC), that’s not the only thing that made it stand out. “What Gabe and Jeff did was everyone that came onto that show in any capacity in every episode they knew or worked with usually, or if there...

Jonathan Frakes has been directing episodes of various “Star Trek” series for the past 34 years, from his first episode behind the camera, “Next Generation” installment “The Offspring,” to the most recent episode of “Star Trek: Discovery.” He is continuity for the franchise that doesn’t quite exist in any other way.
And now, his “Star Trek” directing past is coming back to inform the present. An episode of “Next Gen” he directed in 1993, “The Chase,” is the inspiration for this entire fifth and final season of “Discovery.” A huge plot point from that episode — all of the sentient species in the galaxy were “planned,” billions of years ago, to spring up as they have by a highly advanced prior species called the Progenitors, who seeded the rudiments of their/our DNA on different planets — forms the basis for this 10-episode final run of the show that relaunched the “Star Trek” franchise on TV.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “The Sympathizer” below.]
Turns out there was a very good reason for Robert Downey Jr. playing multiple roles in A24/HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which is revealed in the Episode 7 finale. That’s when the versatile actor turns up in a surprising cameo as the Captain’s (Hoa Xuan Nguyen) father — a French Catholic priest, donning a long dark beard — and we learn that his other four character turns are toxic manifestations of the patriarch who disavowed him.
In fact, it’s a revelation to the Captain as well when all of them blend together in his mind as troubling paternal figures during a traumatic flashback. There’s Claude, the pop music-loving CIA operative; Hammer, the gay East Asian studies professor; Ned Godwin, the military vet-turned-congressman; and Niko, the counter-culture film director. They all contribute in a surreal way to the Captain’s identity crisis as a North Vietnamese communist spy and South Vietnamese sympathizer.

Wheel of Fortune always acknowledges its big wins… usually with lots and lots of confetti. But for his final hour, Pat Sajak, the dependable captain of the celebrated game show, requested the chance to, more or less, sail quietly off into the sunset. The host’s final installment was filmed on the first Friday in April, and it’s scheduled to air two months later, on Friday, June 7. Executive producer Bellamie Blackstone revealed to us that viewers would hear a few words of farewell from Sajak, as well as Vanna White’s thoughts on losing her longtime colleague. But Sajak wished to keep his last episode focused on the game and, most importantly, its players, whom he has always kept at ease. “I think it’s my most important role on the show,” Sajak told his daughter Maggie Sajak in an exclusive interview during his final tapings. Pat Sajak hosting...

Now, Season 3 is nearing its premiere, and Renner is revealing a bit about what fans can expect to see when the show returns. Memorial Day has some special significance for late-night television; you might call even it call it Judgement Day.
For some late-night fans, “Mis-Judgement Day” might also qualify.
Jay Leno’s premiere as the new permanent host of NBC’s Tonight Show took place on Memorial Day, 1992.
Going live that night to underscore the significance of the event, Jay walked out from behind a pointlessly animated assemblage of curtains to a sustained ovation. The host accepted the audience’s embrace with obvious appreciation but also a bit of self-deprecation. When he finally calmed the reception down, he delivered his first line:
“Let’s see how you all feel in 30 years!”
It’s actually been 32; but Ok, let’s do it.
What can we tell about Leno and NBC and the sturm und drang of late-night history set off by that long-ago first Tonight Show with Jay Leno?

No one could top the sensational ending to “The Jinx” — not even “The Jinx.” In 2015, the HBO true crime docuseries profiling New York real estate heir and alleged serial murderer Robert Durst shocked the world by catching Durst on a hot microphone making an apparent confession. “Killed them all, of course” was hardly a smoking gun from a legal point of view, but as television, those five words were the kind of stunning revelation that decades-old cold cases rarely provide. That Durst himself delivered the line in his distinctive, croaking rasp lent the whole saga the air of Greek tragedy,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Interview With the Vampire Season 2 Episode 3, “No Pain.”] No one can stop talking about the vampire Lestat. The portrayal of Sam Reid‘s French vampire has been entirely controlled by Louis’ (Jacob Anderson) answers in his interview with Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) and Claudia’s (Delainey Hayles) journals in Seasons 1 and 2. But a new narrator gives their take on him in Interview With the Vampire Season 2 Episode 3, “No Pain,” and Armand’s (Assad Zaman) memory of Lestat is notably different. “No Pain” is the brief first adaptation of Anne Rice‘s The Vampire Lestat, the sequel novel to 1976’s Interview With the Vampire that provides Lestat’s backstory and his version of the events of the first book. That origin story is told in short form in “No Pain,” but should the series be renewed for Season 3, showrunner Rolin Jones assures more of this story will be explored. Armand tells Daniel the story ...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Sympathizer finale.] The Sympathizer has been slyly teasing the identity of the Commissar since Episode 1, and the finale at last revealed who he is. It also revealed a surprise fifth Robert Downey Jr. character that makes the entire story come full-circle. For most of the season, viewers have been watching the Captain (Hoa Xuande) tell the story through stylistic flashbacks, using his love of American cinema and music to tell the story like a movie. There were occasional cuts to the present day where the Captain was imprisoned in a Vietnamese reeducation camp and being forced to make edit after edit to his confession “script” until the officers, and the unseen Commissar, were satisfied. If you didn’t figure out the Commissar’s identity through the clues peppered throughout earlier episodes, the finale makes it abundantly clear that the Captain has had a hunch about this person’s identity all season long...

Contradictions are often unsatisfying, but contradictions can also be the only way to reconcile hard truths. For instance, it’s not very satisfying to blame your team’s heartbreaking loss on the referees, but there’s honesty in accepting that, over the course of a game, 50 foul calls will inevitably aid one team more than another. In the end, you choose to honor the established rules or live in denial of the final box score; to accept the result or descend into madness; to go along or throw a fit. Neither choice is technically wrong, and thus both choices are technically right. It’s all a matter of perspective.
