In the game of “Survivor,” the goal is to outwit, outplay and outlast the competition, but sometimes real-life troubles get in the way that lead to dramatic medical evacuations. As of this writing, a whopping 19 castaways have been removed due to health emergencies — 18 men and only one woman (Kourtney Moon). Tour our photos above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the “Survivor” medevacs/medical evacuations throughout the show’s run. Which ones were the scariest to watch on TV? Which ones do you remember vividly?

It’s not unheard of for “Survivor” contestants to quit the CBS reality show, but quitting on the third day? That’s what happened Wednesday night on the Season 45 premiere of the survival competition series.
Throughout the premiere, a contestant named Hannah Rose made it clear that she was having a hard time. She complained, suffered from nicotine withdrawal and yelled about how much she missed a real bed. However, no one seemed to think her complaints were anything more than standard grievances – until it came time for the tribal council.
“Everything in my body is like, ‘I’m not going back to that camp. Please don’t make me go back to that camp.’ I don’t need to be voted out to go home,” Hannah said.
When host Jeff Probst asked her what she was implying, Rose said, “I don’t know how much more forthright I can be.

Survivor is not an easy game. Producers dump castaways on a deserted beach with minimal resources and force them to compete in brutal physical challenges. They are starving, suffering from bug bites and other ailments, and are subject to harsh weather conditions. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that numerous players have quit over the show’s 44 seasons. But do the Survivor contestants still get paid if they forfeit their spot in the game?

Every Survivor fan knows that the Sole Survivor gets paid $1 million (before taxes) for winning their season. But what the CBS reality competition series doesn’t disclose on air is that producers pay the other contestants just for being on the show.
CinemaBlend reports that the first boot receives $3,500, and the total rises as the placement increases.

Oh, we had such hopes. Only one person can win “Survivor,” so 95% has to lose, but some lose harder than others. Some players look great on paper but utterly flame out once they start actually playing the game. Others do well for the majority of the season but end up choking in the end. Then there are those who play fantastic games on their first seasons but are not able to replicate that success on future iterations. Above, tour our guide of the most spectacular flameouts in “Survivor” history.
People like Amanda Kimmel and Russell Hantz have done well in multiple seasons, getting to Final Tribal Council not once but twice. But neither was able to convince the jury to vote for them to win in the end, with Amanda in particular seeming like a frontrunner to win only to flounder like a fish out of water in front of the jury.

“Survivor” can be one of the most entertaining shows on television, an adventure on a deserted island where strangers out-maneuver each other and compete in fun challenges. It can also be immensely uncomfortable when the illusion of the game fades away and real-life implications come into play. Above you can scroll through our photos of the 12 most disturbing moments in “Survivor” history, ranked from uncomfortable to ugly.
The safety of the “Survivor” castaways is always of grave importance, which is what makes the show’s medical evacuations so unfortunate to watch. Some, like Michael Skupin in “The Australian Outback,” have an accident, falling in the fire and requiring medical attention. Others push themselves to the brink, like Russell Swan in “Samoa” and Caleb Reynolds in “Kaoh Rong.” These are the worst kinds of “Survivor” exits, and while there can be compelling drama in seeing a castaway push themselves, it’s...

“Survivor” is one of the most dangerous competitions on television, as evidenced by the large number of castaways who’ve been injured over the past two decades. Thankfully, nobody has ever died while filming CBS’s reality TV show. However, four castaways have passed away in the years since leaving the island. In our “Survivor” deaths photo gallery above, we take a moment to remember all of those we’ve lost. May their torches live on forever in our hearts.

The premiere episode of Season 37 of “Survivor” started with a lot of touchy-feely moments and the usual grousing about outsized personalities, thanks to its premise of pitting so-called Davids against Goliaths. But it ended up with an unexpected and rather harrowing twist when Pat Cusack, a member of the David tribe who took charge of building their shelter, was suddenly shown to be moaning in pain and clearly injured in the final moments of the show. He somehow hurt his back when his tribe returned to their camp after they lost the immunity challenge when their boat went through choppy water caused by a rainstorm.

The "Survivor: Worlds Apart" cast was a bit short on recognizable celebrities, if your idea of "celebrity" happens to be former professional athletes or nearly-forgotten '80s TV stars. If, however, you spend time around the world of reality TV or academia, or you spend time around those who spend their time around those worlds, there's no question that Max Dawson entered "Survivor: Worlds Apart" as the season's biggest superstar. As a member of Northwestern's Communications department, Max taught several years of a course titled "The Tribe Has Spoken: Surviving TV’s New Reality," as well as other courses on TV, new media and the business betwixt them. Several of my critical buddies, including Mo Ryan and Myles McNutt and Erik Adams, made appearances in the "Survivor" class. Since 2013, Max has worked as a consultant for and on the reality TV industry. He may not be Lisa Whelchel or Jimmy Johnson,...

"Survivor" isn't a show for quitters and yet many players have quit on "Survivor" over 28 seasons. Players have quit with broken bones, nasty infections, heart problems, stomach problems and whatever those two things were that caused Colton to quit. Jenna quit to be near her ailing mother. Susan quit because Richard Hatch rubbed against her. Various levels of in-game misery caused Janu, Kathy, NaOnka and Purple Kelly to quit. On Wednesday (March 26) night's "Survivor: Cagayan," Lindsey Ogle quit because of her concerns that if she continued to spend time with gloating Bostonian Trish, something bad might happen. Jeff Probst hailed this as a strange sort of "Survivor" first. As a result, the Solana tribe lost Cliff and Lindsey, which Trish and Tony hailed as a huge triumph, even if they were now way down in numbers. Solana subsequently won two straight challenges, which as either a fluke or addition by subtraction.

The Beauty tribe lost its first castaway on "Survivor: Cagayan" when Brice Johnston was voted out, much to many fans' dismay. He tells Zap2it he wasn't surprised to be voted off because he knew his tribemates saw him as a threat.
Zap2it: Are you glad you went on "Survivor," even if you got eliminated so early?
Brice Johnston: Absolutely. "Survivor" to me is one of the best shows out there. If I had to be eliminated early, I couldn't have picked a better situation. They eliminated me because I was beautiful, but most importantly they knew I was a threat and a force to be reckoned with. To me, it's the biggest compliment in the world. And at least I went down fighting.
What did you think of the beauty/brains/brawn twist?

"Survivor's" back, gang! Woo hoo! And this time around, there are no familiar faces in the cast, which is refreshing. The show is definitely in need of some new blood.
Season 28 (seriously, can you believe this is the 28th season?) is bringing with it a fun twist: Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty. We especially like it that each tribe is diverse. The brainiacs aren't a bunch of quote-unquote nerds who are going to get stomped in physical challenges and the beauty queens aren't, well, an actual tribe made up of only pageant contestants.
It should be a fun twist to watch play out, hopefully the tribes aren't dissolved too quickly. Either way, "Survivor: Cagayan" premieres at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on CBS with a two-hour episode, join us here for a live blog of all the fun.

It's getting personal on season 27 of CBS' Survivor. This time around returning players will be pitted against their loved ones. Survivor's ratings have been declining over the past few years. Will this new twist cause the ratings to rise or will they fall? Time will tell.
Host Jeff Probst is back, as are 10 past contestants -- Aras Baskauskas, Candice Cody, Colton Cumbie, Gervase Peterson, Kat Edorsson, Laura Morett, Monica Culpepper, Rupert Boneham, Tina Wesson, and Tyson Apostol.
The higher a show's ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. New ratings data will be added as it becomes available -- typically around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

“It’s My Night”
Airs Wednesday at 8pm (Et) on CBS
The challenge when analyzing Survivor is finding thrills when the finale reaches a predictable ending. This trend has happened frequently in recent seasons, with Malcolm’s exit from the Philippines being a rare exception. Even so, there’s still plenty to enjoy with Blood vs. Water’s conclusion. Tyson removes any doubts about a victory by taking the final two immunity challenges and choosing the right people. Underdogs like Ciera and Tina are too dangerous to face with this jury. Despite the editing focusing on Monica, she earns just one vote, and the rest go to Tyson. It’s hard to disagree with rewarding a guy who found two idols, built a solid alliance, and dodged stiff challenges from Hayden and Ciera. He’s come a long way from the goofball of the Tocantins or...

Gervase Peterson had “early boot” written all over him when he showed up to play Survivor: Blood vs. Water. After all, he had not played in 13 years, And the one time he did play back in season 1 of Borneo, he was best known for being freaked out by the food challenge and walking through a running challenge when he was out of eyesight from the rest of his tribe. But when presented this time with an opportunity to make a big move and vote out one of his biggest alliance members in Aras, Gervase took it. And that move brought...

Monica Culpepper stuck by her "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" alliance and went all the way to the Final 3, where she finished second to Tyson Apostol. She tells Zap2it that
Zap2it: Are you glad you went back on "Survivor"? What was different for you this time around?
Monica Culpepper: Absolutely I was glad to go back. What was different was I got to bring Brad with me and that was just awesome ... Rupert and Brad seemed to be the only two out there who put their loved one's needs in front of theirs. They came out there wanting to get some Redemption. I didn't really get a chance to play the game when I was blindsided by Colton on 'One World.' And I got it this time, the whole kit and caboodle.
Did it surprise you that you only got one vote to win the game?

Gervase Peterson, who joined "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" after not having competed on the show since Season 1, took third place during the finale behind Tyson Apostol and Monica Culpepper. He tells Zap2it that he did consider flipping on Tyson at one point.
Zap2it: Are you glad you returned to "Survivor"? What was different about this time around versus your first season?
Gervase Peterson: Absolutely ecstatic that they brought me back to play again. What was different was really the players. The game is the same, it was the players. They're a lot faster-paced with how they do things. As soon as we got to the beach, Colton came to me and he said here's our alliance -- it's me, you, Aras, Monica and Kat. I was like, "What if I don't like somebody in that alliance? I gotta play with them for 39 days?" ... That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.

The "Survivor" reunion special was heavy on the filler, which is par for the course, but there were a few highlights.
First off, Jeff Probst takes Colton Cumbie to task for joking about being on the Aarp tribe and yet the Aarp members "kicked his a**" and why did he quit? Colton says that he freaked out because there was no one there to take care of him and what he figured out is that he needs to take care of himself. Hey, that's a good lesson to learn, so good for Colton.
Next, we find out that Season 26 winner John Cochran got a job writing for Greg Garcia on "The Millers" on CBS, which is delightful. Way to go, Cochran. We prefer "Mom" and "The Crazy Ones," but it's still lovely that that happened to him.
There's a segment done with Katie and Tina, who just had a family...

We're down to the final four plus three Redemption Island inhabitants on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water." Who do you think will take home the money?
Hayden and Ciera tried to move against Tyson, but so far, his alliance has stuck by him. Do you think Gervase, Monica and Tyson can go all the way? If they do, do you agree with us that Tyson would win easily?

It's been a tumultuous time for Survivor: Blood vs. Water stars Tina Wesson and Katie Collins, as the mother-daughter duo lost their son and brother, Taylor Lee Collins, 25, in a Chattanooga, Tennessee car crash last week. ETonline finds out how the family is coping, and also talks about Katie's Wednesday night exit from the show after a shocking rock-drawing ceremony during Tribal Council.
ETonline: We just wanted to express our condolences at your brother's passing last week, so sorry to hear about that. Have you received a lot of support from the Survivor family?

Caleb Bankston is the latest "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" eliminated castaway, after his former alliance members turned on him and Hayden and then he lost the Redemption Island duel. Bankston tells Zap2it that the last Tribal Council was insane -- and he was hoping Tyson drew the white rock.
Are you glad you did "Survivor"? Was it everything you hoped and/or expected?
"I had a blast playing the game! I was happy with my experience and expected to do fine with the 'survival' aspect. and feared my social game once Colton was separated by the first twist. He tends to bring me out of my shell as I am generally a quiet guy -- believe it or not [laughs]."
Were you surprised when Tyson and Gervase turned on the guys' alliance? I mean, you and Hayden did try to get Tyson out first.

As the "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" season started, most viewers eyed Caleb Bankston suspiciously and thought, "What kind of man could be engaged to Colton Cumbie?" But rather than emulating his verbally glib, camera attentive significant other, Caleb proved to be an amiable background performer. Unlike Colton, Caleb never said anything controversial. Unlike Colton, Caleb never complained about the harsh conditions. In fact, how many Caleb talking head segments do you remember from his 30-ish days in the game? And unlike Colton, Caleb made it past the Merge and even though he was eliminated from the game and became...

Too crazy. Help me God, this episode of Survivor was too crazy. It’s a labyrinth within a spiral within a mirrored room within crazy. It’s the “Windmills of Your Mind” of Survivor. It was crazy. Gnarls Barkley “Crazy ” + Patsy Cline “Crazy” + Seal “Crazy” + that Kirsten Dunst movie Crazy/Beautiful (since Hayden is still hot and here). Let’s just break it all down and stop exclaiming “Crazy!” twenty times. But that said: Crazy! Aasvashfasdfh!
1. Caleb’s elimination is a big bowl of southern-fried depression.
I’m sorry, but there must be something slightly disappointing getting on Survivor, the ne plus ultra of reality programming, and fighting for your survival by stacking cards in the sand like a bored child on the Fourth of July. I mean, Big Brother challenges are definitely more physically demanding than that. Project Runway challenges might be more physically demanding than that. Tim Gunn...

Entertainment Weekly: Very interesting dynamic here at the Redemption Island duel as Vytas tries the old copy-off-the-person-that-has-already-finished trick, yet Laura not only spins her stacked cubes so he can’t copy, but also goes all Mom Power and gives the answers to Tina to get the threat of Vytas eliminated. A very sly strategic move to help control the competition you face in the future as you try to get back in the game. Tell me your reaction when you saw this going down.

It's Thanksgiving week and we're thankful for two things -- first, the above exclusive sneak peek clip of Wednesday night's (Nov. 27) "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" episode, which is all new (not a clip show episode).
We're also thankful for the wonderful castaways who are still on the show that took time out of their busy schedules to tell Zap2it what they're thankful for this year.
Tyson: "I'm thankful for my smokin' hot girlfriend, loving family and friends and a body that won't quit."
Katie: "Every Thanksgiving I'm grateful for family and health and safety. This year more than ever I'm thankful for the opportunities I've been blessed with. Some families aren't even guaranteed a bag of rice for their "tribe" or shelter from natural disasters such as tsunamis. Praying everyone can be grateful for something this year."

Thought I’d start out this recap with a brash (or obvious, whatever) idea: Is there no way a woman can win this season? Seems like the gents — including the sinister Tyson, the sage and silent Caleb, the game-flipping Gervase, and the Julie Chen-approved Hayden — have a stranglehold on the vote right now. Unless Tina can survive Redemption Island and strut her way back into contention, I feel like the ladies will be axed in quick, furious succession. I’m not angry about this, but I expect harsher competitiveness from the boys if this is the case. I want to see more gentlemanly winning in the future. This game should feel like one of those male-dominated celebrity poker nights where Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio make seven figures in a single sitting, but instead it feels like a bunch of unnecessary competitions where the ladies win mini-games for nothing.
