Little Marvin (‘Them: The Scare’ creator) on why ‘horror gets a bad rap’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“Horror gets a bad rap. People don’t talk enough about how deeply human it is,” admits Little Marvin, creator of “Them: The Scare.” In our recent webchat he adds, “I love to see characters that are emotionally complex and that test my allegiances. When I’m already invested in the character and you give me something so unnatural, I’m 1000% in.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Them: The Scare” is the second installment of Amazon Prime Video’s horror anthology series created by Little Marvin. Set in Los Angeles County circa 1991, LAPD Detective Dawn (Deborah Ayorinde) is assigned to a gruesome murder. Luke James plays Edmund, an aspiring actor who appears sensitive but harbors a dark void. Marvin explains, “I endeavored to make something that showed the duality in people. I wanted Edmund to engender a certain level of empathy. If you are terrified by the decisions he...

Audiences have much to take in while watching Them: The Scare unfold, so here’s a deeper explanation to fully understand what The Scare is.
The horror show follows Deborah Ayorinde’s Dawn Reeves, an LAPD officer in 1991, who is thrust into solving one of the most disturbing murder cases the department has ever seen. Little does she know how deeply it connects to her past, hidden behind secrets she hasn’t yet discovered.
Audiences also follow Luke James’ Edmund Gaines, a failed actor who slowly descends into madness.

The legacy of American Horror Story continues to haunt Amazon Prime. In 2020, the studio released Welcome to the Blumhouse, a feature-length horror anthology, and a year later another anthology called Them premiered, which was immediately renewed for a second season.
What is Them Season 1 About?
The first season takes place in 1953 when the Emory family moves to Compton, California. Mother, father and two daughters dream of settling down in a new place, but the residents of the prestigious suburb are hostile – the locals do not want a Black family anywhere near them.
The gossiping housewives and their superiority-obsessed husbands try to make Emory's life a nightmare. The neighbors are successful in their efforts, but the Emory family is already afraid, feeling the ominous presence of unexplained phenomena in their own home.
Them is filled with an alarming, at first completely incomprehensible tension that reigns in the new home of the main characters.

Review: The first season of Them debuted on Prime Video close to the one-year mark after Covid-19. Marketed as the small-screen continuation of Jordan Peele’s brand of big-screen horror, the series blended social commentary, political relevance, and disturbing imagery as it chronicled the Emory family’s move to Southern California. Led by a great performance by Deborah Ayorinde, Them (subtitled Covenant) was almost too violent for its own good. While I enjoyed the first season,...

Forget American Horror Story, Prime Video Just Dropped Its Perfect Replacement With 100% Tomatometer
The detective genre mixed with something paranormal-ish has been a key to streaming success for quite a long time now — and Prime Video’s brand new series turns out to be one more proof for it.
Though it’s been only several days since Them: The Scare dropped on the platform and joined the first part of the whole anthology, Covenant, the show has surely managed to capture everyone’s attention and even now can boast of a perfect score.
Them: The Scare makes a big time jump compared to the first part that took place in 1953 and will now take the viewers to the 1990s. This time the plot follows LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is portrayed by season 1’s actress Deborah Ayorinde, as she embarks on her own investigation of an eerie murder of a foster mother.

Racism and abandonment form the crux of the deeply tragic horror story Them: The Scare. Sadly, though, the two extremely important subject matters don’t quite gel well, thanks to the writers’ inability to find a seamless blend. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad show, though; it’s just that the latest season of Prime Video’s horror anthology series falls quite short of being something truly great. The in-your-face yellow filter also plays a role in that. It would have been much better had the show done away with it. What really works is the absolutely terrific acting performance by the cast, led by the magnificent Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to play a new character. Pam Grier is very impressive as the mother of Ayorinde’s lead, although she could have been utilized a lot more. And never in my life would I have imagined seeing someone...

Them: The Scare, the newest entry into the black horror anthology for Prime Video, will blow your mind.
The follow-up to Them: Covenant brings the action forward in a few decades to 1991, where LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve will be embroiled in a case unlike anything she's ever seen.
And soon enough, her family will be affected in ways she never saw coming.
The series, born from the mind of its brilliant creator Little Marvin, has a robust cast. TV Fanatic was blessed to take part in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with stars Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, and Pam Grier.
One of the biggest strengths of the Them: The Scare series is its fantastic cast, which brings this decidedly twisty and scary tale to life.

If you've seen the trailers, then you know Them: The Scare will surely be unlike anything else on television.
The black horror anthology returns for a second season on Prime Video, with a new story and landscape at the forefront but the same scares the first season evoked.
TV Fanatic was lucky enough to participate in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with series creator Little Marvin and Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to the series in a new role.
While the first season, Them: Covenant, was set in 1953 and followed a black family moving from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles, this season takes place in 1991.
The story stays in Los Angeles but changes the timeframe, introducing a new set of circumstances for the new cast of characters.
Little Marvin, the mastermind behind the innovative series, was inspired by many things when creating this universe.

Them has never shied away from exploring some of the darkest parts of America’s history. The first season of this anthology series was centered around the Great Migration of the 1950s and virulent racism in suburban America, and now the second season (all episodes drop on April 25 on Prime Video) focuses on Los Angeles circa 1991, in the direct aftermath of Rodney King’s assault at the hands of the LAPD. This is where we find Detective Dawn Reeves, as she wrestles with racism and misogyny from her colleagues, familial turmoil, and most terrifyingly, a malevolent entity terrorizing Los Angelenos all over the city — with her loved ones potentially the next targets. Family Ties Much of what drives Them: The Scare is Detective Reeves’ fierce devotion to her son, Kel (Joshua J. Williams), and her mother, Athena (Pam Grier), particularly in the face of grounded and supernatural threats alike. The...

Them: The Scare is a second season of the popular horror series – though not quite as you know it. Instead the show returns with new characters, in a new setting, and for Deborah Ayorinde, this posed quite the challenge, having appeared now in both projects. “Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively
The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.
Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.
“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.
The ensemble also features Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark,...

Hallmark Channel is capping off a month of original films themed around Jane Austen’s works with the premiere of a new feature-length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The classic story about whether young women should choose husbands based on romantic notions of love or practicality has been adapted for both television and film several times before. Many fans may remember either the 1995 film adaptation directed by Ang Lee or the 2008 BBC and PBS television miniseries starring Dominic Cooper and Charity Wakefield.
This Sense and Sensibility stands out from the other recent period adaptations of Austen’s works, however, as it’s produced by Hallmark’s Mahogany brand, which is devoted to producing original films and series with Black screenwriters, actors, directors, and other creatives. Unlike Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion adaptation, which used the controversial strategy of “color-blind casting,” Hallmark’s Sense and Sensibility deliberately sought out Black actors for principal and supporting roles.

Respectability has been a pillar of Black American culture since Emancipation. Since Black people arrived on the shores of America, we have been subjected to hardships and cruelties based solely on our skin color. For centuries we’ve combated horrible stereotypes in our everyday lives and American popular culture. For Black women, in particular, being anything other than docile and likable meant that you could be seen as masculine, mean, overly sexual, asexual, and conniving. These terms were weaponized against Black people by outsiders and insiders like W.E.B Dubois, who touted his talented tenth, the most educated of the race, as the epitome of “good” Blackness and the embattled Bill Cosby with his “perfect” portrayal of the Black family in “The Cosby Show.”
Though respectability has been lauded as a tool for full citizenship in the Black community, it’s a falsehood. More than that, the performance of likability is exhausting.

ITV’s biggest week for streaming was Nov. 22-28, which attracted 106.4 million streams and covered the last week of “I’m...
