Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor beloved for his role as Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, recently made a powerful statement against the notion that his career needs a Tyler Perry reboot. Taking to social media, Ribeiro responded to a suggestion by stating, I don’t need or ever want that man to do anything for me. Ribeiro directed 12 episodes of the Perry-created sitcom Meet the Browns from 2009 to 2010, but this recent comment fuels rumors of a longstanding tension. The iconic character of Carlton is deeply etched in the minds of TV audiences, largely thanks to Ribeiro’s...

Tyler Perry penned an op-ed Wednesday speaking out against alleged racial discrimination experienced by his friends, comedians Eric André and Clayton English.
In his column, published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Perry addresses a lawsuit filed earlier this year alleging that both André and English were unlawfully stopped by authorities at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Earlier this year, Perry and several other actors — including Jamie Foxx, Taraji P. Henson, Sterling K. Brown and Rege-Jean Page — filed a friend-of-the-court brief as part of the suit.
“André and English were targeted and stopped by Clayton County Police Department (Ccpd) officers, several months apart, on jet bridges in Atlanta’s airport while they were steps from boarding their flights,” Perry wrote.
Despite the fact that both men had been cleared by Tsa security, Perry wrote that the comedians were approached by plainclothed police officers and alleged they were targeted because of “the color of their skin.

Ashton Kutcher looks at OpenAI’s generative video tool, Sora, as the future of filmmaking.
“I have a beta version of it and it’s pretty amazing,” Kutcher said of the platform in a recent conversation with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt at the Berggruen Salon in Los Angeles.
He added, “You can generate any footage that you want. You can create good 10, 15-second videos that look very real. It still makes mistakes. It still doesn’t quite understand physics. … But if you look at the generation of this that existed one year ago as compared to Sora, it’s leaps and bounds. In fact, there’s footage in it that I would say you could easily use in a major motion picture or a television show.”
The “That ’70s Show” star went on to explain how AI could make filmmaking significantly cheaper.

Ashton Kutcher is envisioning a world where everyone is a filmmaker. Or perhaps it is one in which no one but OpenAI’s Sora is a filmmaker.
In conversation with Eric Schmidt for the Berggruen Institute, Kutcher credited the new beta version of Sora for inspiring higher-quality content and democratizing filmmaking…just, you know, without actual writers, directors, camera people, actors, stunt people…

Whoopi Goldberg celebrated the 30th anniversary of “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” by reuniting the movie’s cast on “The View” — and not just her adult co-stars like Kathy Najimy. Goldberg gathered many of the kid actors who made up the choir in the movie and recreated the scene in which her character, Sister Mary Clarence, conducts them in a soulful rendition of “Oh Happy Day.”
Lead vocalist Ryan Toby, who played the young Ahmal in the movie, returned to sing “Oh Happy Day” with Goldberg 30 years later. The co-stars also sang “Joyful, Joyful” from the film, with The War and Treaty singer Tanya Trotter taking over vocals from Lauryn Hill, who did not participate in the reunion. Hill’s role as the talented choir singer Rita Louise Watson served as a breakthrough for her. Goldberg broke down in tears after the “Joyful, Joyful” reunion performance.

Comedian Martin Lawrence has played several iconic characters in movies like the Bad Boy franchise and his own sitcom Martin. But one of his most famous roles seemed to remind fans of a character Tyler Perry made popular.
Martin Lawrence once commented on ‘paving the way’ for Tyler Perry Tyler Perry | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Of all of Lawrence’s characters, his Big Momma’s House role might be one of his most well-known. In the 2000 feature and its sequel, Lawrence played an FBI agent who disguised himself as an old woman to capture a criminal. Over the years, a very similar character in Tyler Perry’s Madea emerged. Like Lawrence’s Big Momma’s role, Perry played a woman in her twilight years who taught life lessons to the younger generation.
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Perry once explained that his Madea character was inspired by his own family members.

Short films generated by artificial intelligence are popping up at more and more film festivals, and the largest event yet is dedicating an entire section to AI-generated movies.
The 2024 Tribeca Festival announced Friday it will host Sora Shorts, a new program featuring five original short films all made using OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model Sora. It’s not the first time AI films have made their way to a major film festival, but it is the first time movies made with Sora have.
Sora still hasn’t been released to the public and is new even for the most seasoned AI filmmakers, but OpenAI gave the cohort of five directors early access to the program — so long as they each agreed to the filmmaking terms surrounding AI as negotiated last year with the DGA, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA guilds.

Macy (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and Marcia Cross (You) have signed on to star in Exit Right, a new indie that veteran documentary filmmaker Thomas A. Morgan will direct from his own script for the London-based Garrick Street Productions and Square Zero Films.
Marking Morgan’s narrative debut, the film centers on Jan Randall (Sarandon), whose brain — affected with inoperable cancer — makes her deeply afraid of being trapped inside. Refusing to take medications that would reduce her final days to a hospital bed, she moves into a tent in her backyard. Determined to give her one last gift, her husband John courageously takes her on a trip around the world — on foot, in their own hometown, for what is truly the trip of a lifetime.

Shannon Sharpe arrives promptly at noon at the South Beverly Grill, a short drive from his home in Holmby Hills. He is 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, a wall of muscle sheathed in black athleisure wear. He slides into his favorite booth, orders a cranberry ginger ale and offers a hello — friendly but guarded — to an awaiting journalist.
It’s usually Sharpe asking the questions — whether on his blockbuster podcasts Club Shay Shay (3.17 million YouTube subscribers) and Nightcap (1.26 million subscribers) or on ESPN’s First Take, where through the NFL season he spars good-naturedly with host Stephen A. Smith.
Sharpe, who turns 56 on June 26, shot to fame as a tight end for the Denver Broncos. He’s an NFL Hall of Famer and three-time Super Bowl champ. But his other calling, it turns out, is talking — about sports, yes, but about many other things, too, from social issues to politics to celebrity gossip.

Alfonso Ribeiro Shades Tyler Perry In Viral Tweet. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Alfonso Ribeiro is not looking for any favors for anyone, especially from Tyler Perry. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is doing just fine as the host of Dancing With the Stars and made that clear in a recent viral tweet.
On Tuesday, May 28, Alfonso Ribeiro shot back at a social media user on X who suggested that actor/director Tyler Perry could “revamp” Ribeiro’s career. Ribeiro said, “I don’t need or ever want that man to do anything for me.”
Tyler Perry and Alfonso Ribeiro do share a professional history. Alfonso Ribeiro directed 12 episodes of the Perry-created sitcom “Meet the Browns” in 2009 and 2010, so it is unclear why he seemingly shaded “The Big Momma House” star in the viral tweet.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Alphabet and Meta are hoping to convince studios to license their content so that it can be used to train video generation software. OpenAI has already staked its claim in that field with Sora, a potentially revolutionary video generator that is currently undergoing tests. They initially stayed at a waterfront property in Canada’s Vancouver Island before relocating to the States in Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles. The duke and duchess resided in Beverly Hills at Tyler Perry’s mansion for a while but then moved again and eventually settled in the town of Montecito in Santa Barbara County. They now live in an 18,000-square-foot mansion nicknamed “The Chateau.” The home sits on five acres of land and has both ocean and mountain views. It boasts 16 bathrooms, nine bedrooms, and a separate guest house with two more bedrooms and bathrooms. There’s also a library, a sauna, a wine cellar, a game room, a gym, tennis courts, and an arcade.

The summer movie season continues with its first direct franchise installment, hoping to revive things after a softer month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Undaunted by the disappointing showing for Universal’s “The Fall Guy” this past weekend, Disney and 20th Century are releasing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the next installment of the popular franchise that began way back in 1968 with the sci-fi classic starring Charlton Heston, into over 3,900 theaters this Friday. This installment takes place hundreds of the years into the future, when the apes have fully taken over from humans, following a young ape named Noah (Owen Teague from “Bloodline”) who goes on a journey to rescue his people from a more dominant ape clan.

Tyler Perry and Netflix are expanding their creative partnership. Fresh off his most recent film Mea Culpa, the multihyphenate has signed a new deal alongside producer DeVon Franklin (last year’s Oscar-nominated Flamin’ Hot) to produce faith-based films that will stream exclusively on Netflix. The first in the new arrangement will be R&b, a modern-day retelling of the iconic biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz.
“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” Perry said. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”
“Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years,” Franklin added, “so when he called me to team up on movies that can uplift the human spirit,...
