Almost twenty years after its film adaptation, Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction novel ‘The Gangs Of New York’ is all set to be presented as a series because it’s the era of streaming and television content and the stakeholders are looking to squeeze the maximum out of it.
Martin Scorsese directed the movie ‘Gangs Of New York’, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz and scored 10 Oscar nominations. And now, Scorsese will help to launch by executive producing and directing the first two episodes, reports ‘Empire’ magazine.
The movie chronicled DiCaprio’s Amsterdam Vallon returning to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher (Day-Lewis), his father’s killer.
According to ‘Empire’, this new small-screen version is spearheaded by Miramax TV and Brett C. Leonard, who is one of the executive producers on Apple TV+’s ‘Shantaram’. It’ll be a completely...

Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. The list includes several high-profile scribes including John Oliver, David Simon, Warren Leight, Tom Fontana, Eric Overmyer and Jesse Armstrong.
Read the petition and its signatories below.
Editorial staffers at Vice overwhelmingly ratified their first contract with WGA East in April 2016, a three-year deal that was retroactive to January 1 that year.
“This petition shows what WGA East solidarity looks like,” the guild said in a statement. “Just as our members who craft shows for HBO are expressing support for their brothers and sisters at Vice, the Wgae-represented employees in all parts of Vice are supporting each other in the quest for a good contract. This week's Fear The Walking Dead is a melancholy scenario reminding its characters that nothing, nowhere and no-one is safe...
This review contains spoilers.
2.2 We All Fall Down
Fear The Walking Dead is a familiar format to anyone who has seen the original series. A group of survivors go from place to place looking for somewhere to settle down for a little bit, avoiding dangers both undead and living in the process. However, where The Walking Dead dropped us right into the post-apocalypse, Fear The Walking Dead is taking things from a different perspective. We're not coming across groups of hardened survivors, we're dealing with people who may or may not be waiting for the military to come sweeping in with tanks and guns to wipe the rotters off the face of the earth and put humanity back on top of the food chain.

For someone with his immense range and talent, Tom Hardy has been a “one to watch” far too long. Years before he went toe-to-toe with Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises, he made his debut in HBO’s Band of Brothers in 2001, quickly graduated to Star Trek villain in 2002, and won the BAFTA Rising Star Award for Inception in 2011. Earlier this year, he carried an entire film, Locke, in which he just drove a car and talked on the phone.

Bane, meet Emperor Zod. Or should we instead say: Tom Hardy, meet Michael Shannon.
The two actors-turned-iconic villains will be teaming up in the upcoming adaptation of Brett C. Leonard's play, "The Long Red Road." Variety broke the news, saying that Hardy will play a man named Sam who turns to drinking to escape his problems, while Shannon will play his older brother. No word yet on who will play Hardy's character's daughter, which is a major role in the story.
This is familiar territory for Hardy, as he starred in the debut run of "The Long Red Road" when Philip Seymour Hoffman directed it in Chicago back in 2010. He earned some good reviews for the role, and we're assuming that that is why he was brought back to star in the feature length film. No word on whether Hoffman will be involved as well, but we're crossing our...

Tom Hardy—who starred in the original production of Brett C. Leonard’s play The Long Red Road, back in the days when the much-in-demand actor still had time to dick around with live theater—will reprise his leading role in a movie version that Leonard is adapting and co-producing with Paul Neeson and Richard Fant. Hardy plays a man living on an Indian reservation, hiding out from his past and slowly drinking himself to death. Fellow in-demand character actor (and specialist in bug-eyed loons) Michael Shannon will play the hero’s brother, a piece of casting that may or ...

Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises) and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) are set to star in the feature film adaptation of Brett C. Leonard's play, The Long Red Road. Philip Seymour Hoffman already directed the work for the stage with Hardy playing the character Sammy. Here's a description of the story:
A devastating new play about the impact of addiction, The Long Red Road introduced audiences to Sammy, who has fled his past and landed in South Dakota, where he is slowlydrinking himself to death. When his young daughter arrives desperate to reunite with her father, he must decide between the self-hatred that consumes him and the responsibilities he’s tried to leave behind.
Sounds like a pretty intense drama, but I have no doubt that Hardy and Shannon will act the shit out of it. Hardy is set to reprise his role, and Shannon will play Sammy's brother, Bob.

Over the past few years both Tom Hardy and Michael Shannon have enjoyed varied levels of success, but both of them have had their careers rise very quickly in a short time. Shannon has been more low key with indie films like Take Shelter (though he has a villainous role in Man of Steel next year) while Hardy has been more prominent in films like The Dark Knight Rises (with lower profile turns in films like Warrior). Now the two powerful actors are teaming up for The Long Red Road, an adaptation of Brett C. Leonard's stage play of the same name which Hardy actually starred in at the Goodman Theater in Chicago. Read on! Variety says the story starts with Hardy's character Sam attempting to drink away his demons on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. Tom Hardy and Michael Shannon are, hands down, two of the finest actors of their generation. Hardy is of course currently in theatres now in the summer’s biggest and best blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises, and Shannon will be doing the same next summer in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Variety report that the two are now attached to star opposite each other in The Long Red Road, a feature adaptation of the original play of the same name by Brett C. Leonard.
The play premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago back in 2010, with Hardy in the lead as Sam, under the direction of the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman. As yet, it’s not clear whether Hoffman will return to direct the adaptation, but the project would be that much more amazing if he does.

The 2010 play was directed by the one and only Philip Seymour Hoffman, though as of yet, there are no reports as to whether he’ll direct the film or not. Variety reports that, yes, dreams do come true, and Tom Hardy and Michael Shannon will soon star together in a movie in which they will play no less than actual brothers (insert Warrior joke here). The pair will star in a big screen adaptation of Brett C. Leonard‘s play The Long Red Road, which will see Hardy reprising the role he originated in the stage version back in 2010. The play centers on Hardy’s Sammy, a drunk who seems bent on pulling of a Leaving Las Vegas maneuver, and is attempting to drink himself to death on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. Shannon will play his brother, Bob. Leonard himself will adapt his play for the screen. Interestingly enough, Shannon also has a background on the stage, and though he has not performed in Road previously, many of his theatrical ties are also rooted in the Chicago scene from which it emerged. Variety reports that The Long Red Road, a 2010 play written by Brett C. Leonard, will be getting the big screen treatment courtesy of a new production company called Whiplash. First brought to the stage in 2010 in Chicago, Il by director Philip Seymour Hoffman (yes, that one), The Long Red Road tells the story of Sam, a man who flees his home to live on an Indian reservation in South Dakota with the intent on drinking himself to death. That plan gets interrupted by his young daughter, who shows up one day on the reservation looking to reunite with Sam.
The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy, who originated the role of Sam in the original 2010 run, has signed on to reprise his role while Michael Shannon has also signed on to play Sam’s older brother Bob, who ties in very much with the horrible past Sam is running away from.

As Charles Bronson for Nicolas Winding Refn, Bane for Chris Nolan, a Bondurant brother for John Hillcoat and an Mma fighter for Gavin O'Connor, if there's one thing that defines most of Tom Hardy's roles in his meteoric rise, it's pure masculinity. That doesn't look to be changing any time soon as he gears up to star George Miller's "Fury Road," but color us surprised as hell to hear that the actor's now set to team with playwright Brett C. Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane, Give ‘Em Hell Malone)—the well-endowed former high school sports legend turned middle-aged high school basketball coach turned local gigolo—returns for digital dominance on September 27 when HBO Home Entertainment releases Hung: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD.
It's Season Two and Thomas Jane is still Hung.
The Blu-ray and DVD, which are priced at $49.98 and $39.98, respectively, will arrive on the eve of the HBO show’s Season Three premiere.
In the second season of the TV comedy series, Ray, and his unlikely pimp Tanya (Jane Adams, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) have taken on slick “life coach” Lenore Bernard (Rebecca Creskoff, Knucklehead) as co-pimp, devastating Tanya in the process. With Lenore pushing a debonair version of hooker Ray on her upscale clients, Tanya wants to prove she has the “right stuff” when it comes to being a successful – and far more ethical – pimp than Lenore.

Terra Nova, one of the more interesting TV shows in Fox's fall lineup so far, centers on the Shannons, a family from the future. In this dystopic vision of 2149 A.D., our planet is suffering from overpopulation, and the exhaustion of natural resources. Several people, including the Shannons, are sent back in time to a settlement on prehistoric earth; to recreate society and to try to prevent the difficulites of the future from ever occurring. With any luck, they will avoid any Back-to-the-Future-ish hijinks along the way; after all, the 'Under the Sea' dance would be an entirely different affair 85 million years ago.
Fox has only been releasing information about Terra Nova in bits and pieces - just enough to keep us interested. The trailer released today shows the first glimpse of actual dinosaurs; and they look pretty good! Check out the trailer below:

HBO has been lining up terrific projects left and right with quite a few being announced just this past week. Today, Deadline reports that HBO is developing a drama project titled "Upstate." The project comes from eOne Television and Cooper's Town Productions, headed by actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and Emily Ziff. Written by Brett C. Leonard (HBO's "Hung") and playwright Bob Glaudini (who collaborated with Hoffman on "Jack Goes Boating"), the script focuses on Roy Perkins, a recently laid-off man who relocates his family to an undisclosed rural location in America in order to become a correctional officer in a…...

Exclusive: HBO is heading Upstate with a drama project in development from eOne Television and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Emily Ziff's Cooper’s Town Prods. Upstate, which is being written by Brett C. Leonard (HBO's Hung) and actor-playwright Bob Glaudini, centers on recently laid-off Roy Perkins, who relocates his family to rural America to become a correctional officer in a new private prison run for profit. As the town and his family prosper, Roy encounters conflict and danger inside and outside the prison walls. Leonard, Glaudini, Hoffman and Ziff are executive producing with eOne's Michael Rosenberg. Hoffman has history at HBO. His only TV acting gig in the past 15 years was in the 2005 HBO movie Empire Falls, which earned him an Emmy nomination. And a year ago, Cooper's Town set up its first TV project, a drama based on Samantha Peale's novel The American Painter Emma Dial, at HBO.

Chicago – HBO’s “Hung” doesn’t quite live up to the incredibly high standards of the best network on television but the sporadic writing on the show and very strong ensemble did produce enough interesting dramatic and comedic moments to warrant a look on the excellent Blu-ray release of the first season, timed to coincide with the premiere of season two on Sunday, June 27th, 2010.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
The series premiere of “Hung” and even the next few episodes were missing that spark; the chemistry that elevates an experience from being just another one-night stand. The tale of a man (Thomas Jane) who lost everything in the horrible economy but maintained the rights to his giant pecker and how to use it was a hit-and-miss affair that too often missed for at least three episodes. Then the casting agent found the perfect supporting actress and gave her an excellent subplot and...

The White Ribbon (Sony) On the eve of Ww I, a small village in Germany is struck by a series of tragic, seemingly unconnected events until the townspeople, and the audience, start to connect the dots. Shot in stark, beautiful black & white, director Michael Haneke has fashioned a haunting metaphorical drama that is as coldly chilling as anything made by Ingmar Bergman, and darkly unsettling as anything from the canon of David Lynch. A rich, tough, brilliant cinematic experience you’re not likely to forget. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bd bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; featurettes. Widescreen Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
Alice In Wonderland (Disney) Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll classic finds young Alice (Mia Wasikowska), a 19th century girl who finds herself in an unhappy engagement to a boorish suitor, tumbling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, where she encounters magical cakes,...

HBO Has spilled the beans on what it has in store for Hung fans this year. Thomas Jane will be returning as the everyman-turned-gigolo. Hung turned out to be one of the better comedy dramas to hit the airwaves last year, and I, for one, can't wait to see what moral slippery slopes Jane's Ray Drecker winds up on this season. From the looks of this press-release, it looks like the Hung writers room is amping things up a bit.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

I spent a lazy Sunday awhile back flipping through the channels, when I came across My Girl. How could I have forgotten about Vada Sultenfuss, the 1991 girl of my dreams? While all of my friends were more concerned with Macaulay Culkin, I was enamored with Vada and her tomboyish antics, Chuck Taylors and cutoffs.
Anna Chlumsky, who played Vada in the film and its 1994 sequel sans-Culkin (remember: bees), seemed to have fallen off the radar quite a bit. She took a break from acting from 1998-2002 to major in international studies at the University of Chicago, and has in recent years started up again with some theater work, like in Brett C. Leonard's off-Broadway "Unconditional," which was put on by Philip Seymour Hoffman's LAByrinth Theater Company last year.
Chlumsky also has made recent appearances on shows like Law and Order and 30 Rock. I'm willing to bet it was the latter role,...

- If we had a measuring stick we'd say that Philip Seymour Hoffman's rise to fame came almost a decade back with noticeable supporting roles in Boogie Nights (97) and The Big Lebowski (98) and the memorable lead part in the Solondz's ensemble pic Happiness (1998). Now in the perfect position to add some clout to projects in development, the actor will start wearing a producer's hat in a deal that Variety reports as a two-year, first look contract with Overture Films. Hoffman and Emily Ziff's Cooper's Town Prods. will commence with a feature adaptation of Brett C. Leonard's play Unconditional. Leonard who made the little seen film Jailbait, will also write the screenplay. Playbill describes the play about nine characters and nine New York stories "as a racially and sexually charged tale of rage, love, justice and betrayal." Leonard gravitates toward the unsung and unrecognized and unappreciated in the American social system.
