2011 BBC World Sport Star of the Year winner Novak Djokovic has missed out on the award this year, with the accolade going to a younger sports player.
Djokovic, who topped the year-end tennis prize money rankings, was included on the six-person shortlist after his incredible 2023 season. He won three Grand Slams and the Atp Finals and was just a set away from winning the Calendar Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
The Serbian legend achieving those incredible feats at the age of 36 is unprecedented in men's tennis. Such an extraordinary level of excellence meant many thought a second BBC World Sport Star of the Year award was a possibility.
However, Djokovic did not even make the top three for the accolade from the six-person shortlist. He joined Olympic Gymnastics gold medallist Simone Biles and Spain's World Cup winner Aitana Bonmati in missing out on the top three.
The award was given to footballer Erling Haaland.

Novak Djokovic had one hell of a year and was nominated for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Award because of it.
2023 was a pretty decent year in sports, with many great things happening. Novak Djokovic was part of that 'Wrapped' with a few highlights, such as winning three Grand Slams, which put him at the top of most singles Grand Slam trophies ever.
That was not the only thing Djokovic did, as his list of achievements is far longer. He finished the year with a 57-7 record and seven trophies in his cabinet. That's the most trophies out of all players, which is fascinating, considering he doesn't play a full calendar.
He also finished the year as number one, which was an incredible achievement considering that, again, he doesn't play the full calendar. It just shows how efficient he is with the events he plays. If he plays it,...

Wellington, July 21 (Ians) Spain made an impressive start to their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on Friday, overpowering Costa Rica 3-0 in Group C at Wellington Stadium, here.
Spain seized the reins of the match early on. At the 20-minute mark, a powerfully driven cross by Esther Gonzalez forced Valeria Del Campo to inadvertently score an own goal.
That goal opened the floodgates at Wellington Stadium. Aitana Bonmati quickly found the back of the net with a skilfully executed finish in the 22nd minute, and, just four minutes later, Gonzalez herself neatly tapped home from point-blank range.
Costa Rica’s goalkeeper, Daniela Solera, was instrumental in keeping the score in check, especially when she parried a penalty from Jenni Hermoso with a spectacular diving save.
Spain’s relentless pressure continued after halftime, with Olga Carmona rattling the crossbar merely five minutes into the second half. Gonzalez took a chance next,...
