Dexter: Original Sin is rounding out the ranks of Miami Metro.
James Martinez (Love Victor), Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love) and Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) have been tapped to play younger versions of some of the key cops previously featured in the original Dexter, while Reno Wilson (Mike & Molly) will play a previously name-checked character that was never seen onscreen in the flagship series.
Originally ordered to series in February 2023 and titled Dexter: Origins, Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami and revolves around Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Christian Slater), Dexter adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people without being discovered by law enforcement at the same time as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Martinez will take over the role of Angel Batista, played in the original series by David Zayas.

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Dear Hollywood,
As the Thanksgiving holiday dawns, I urge you to include Latino films and performances on your winter watch list and give Hollywood Latinos and their projects a fair chance to be seen.
While Latinos are a growing and essential part of the cultural and social fabric of America, based on the dismal numbers from the recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Report on major Hollywood films released between 2007-2022, it’s clear that Hollywood — America’s narrative-creating and image-defining institution — is broadly failing to acknowledge or include the Latino community.
The Annenberg report notes slow progress over the years. In 2007, no Hispanic/Latino actor held a lead or co-lead role in major Hollywood films. In 2021 and 2022, there were marginal gains, with 10 films where Hispanic/Latino actors held lead or co-lead roles, out of a total of 109 and 118 leading roles, respectively. Among directors and producers of major Hollywood films, less than 5% were Hispanic or Latino,...

For Kemp Powers, coming on board to direct “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson) was a daunting task, especially considering how he views the first movie as a masterpiece. “I think it would behoove me not to even try to follow that up but just try to do something completely different. We were trying to create our own standalone film. It felt like a better attitude to have going into it than a traditional sequel,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Taking this job also meant that he would constantly have people contacting him to remind him not to mess up the character of Miles Morales. Powers understood, though, how much Morales means to so many on a very personal level. “There’s a whole generation of young people who for them,...

In “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” our hero Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is transported to a dimension where dozens of other Spider-heroes reside — or at least intersect like threads on a web.

His right hand is Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), who shares the same superhero name as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld). Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took the unique animation style of the first movie and cranked the dial straight to eleven. While the Spider-Verse sequel was a big success, it came under fire for harsh working conditions that reportedly pushed artists to the brink in order to get the film done.
Related Across the Spider-Verse producers fought to keep Spider-Punk in the movie
While speaking with Variety, Spider-Verse producers/co-writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were asked to comment on the ongoing strikes and were given an opportunity to address the criticism about working conditions on the sequel.
“I’ve always been optimistic about this labor movement, because these deals seem incredibly makeable, and the main problem is that only one party wants to negotiate,” Lord said. “But as long as both parties will come to negotiate in good faith and address the very real problems, like writers’ pay — which...

As I tell my students, choices have consequences. Brilliantly, several choices made by Mikles Morales and his friends come back to bite them in the ass in the wonderful, if bloated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Out now from Sony Home Entertainment, the 2:20 film is merely part one of a more sprawling saga that is entirely built around Miles (Shameik Moore) making a decision in the previous film that has multiversal implications.
In fact, his repercussions have such omniversal impact that Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) has formed the Spider-Society with its core members traversing the multiverse to repair the damage (with a wonderful throwaway line about Doctor Strange).
Miles is blissfully unaware of this until another of his actions appears in the form of a new foe, the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who is seen mastering his powers with growing confidence until he makes a mistake and enters himself and, therefore, the multiverse.

With the many, many, many versions of Spider-Man introduced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it says something that Spider-Punk emerged as a breakout character. However, the character wasn’t always part of the story and the producers had to fight to keep him in the movie once Daniel Kaluuya signed on.
Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), aka Hobie Brown, is part of the Spider-Society in Across the Spider-Verse, although he mostly plays by his own rules. He forms a bond with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and by the end of the film, the stage is set for Hobie to play a bigger role in the upcoming sequel. “He was in and out of the picture for a little while because we weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie,” Phil Lord told Entertainment Weekly. “When we met Daniel Kaluuya,...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was recently released on Digital and fans quickly noticed many small changes from the version they recall seeing in theaters. While speaking with GamesRadar, Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller explained the reason behind the changes.
“There was an international version that was made almost two months before the movie came out because it had to be translated into different languages and these French censors have to decide what the rating of the movie is in Europe,” Christopher Miller explained. “The team at [Sony Pictures] Imageworks still had some shots that they felt they could do better for the finished version. So, they cleaned up and tweaked those things.“
Miller added that crew members would suggest other changes that made their way into the constantly shifting cut of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “Certain crew members – people in the sound department or on the animation team – were like,...

It’s been a week (ish) since I hopped behind the wheel of a Porsche for the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Porsche Driving Experience. The day was beyond exciting. And it was a thrilling and inventive way to promote the franchise sequel. Starring Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Velez, and Dean Scott Vazquez. It also features an impressive cast of actors giving voice to the actual Transformers themselves. The talent includes Peter Cullen, Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and a scene-stealing Pete Davidson.
At the event, we spoke with the film’s director, Steven Caple Jr., and second unit director, James Madigan. While at an event at the Porsche Driving Experience, they discussed the car’s connection with the film. James and Steven also talked about the casting of Pete Davidson and matching him with the vehicle in question. The two also opened up about just how...

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, directed by Steven Caple Jr, is about to hit home video. The film stars Anthony Ramos, Luna Lauren Velez, Dominique Fishback, and a hilarious voice performance from Pete Davidson as Mirage. And since Mirage usually appears as a Porsche, the publicity team had something special in store for its video release. In honor of the film, several journalists made their way to the Porsche Driving Experience in Carson, California. We drove the Porsche 911 and the 718 Cayman and spoke with the film’s director, Mr. Caple Jr, and second unit director, James Madigan. It was quite a rush, and that’s a massive understatement.
I’ve never driven a Porsche in my entire life. And the second we arrived, we had the fantastic opportunity to get behind the wheel of these two beauties. Firstly, taking off in a car and going zero to sixty is more than a little thrilling.

While The Flash may be struggling to find its footing at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is having no such issue. Sony’s animated sequel has now crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, with $290.5 million domestically and $215.9 million internationally. Way to go, Spidey.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also miles ahead of the first movie, which took in $384 worldwide, a number the sequel crossed in just 12 days. Across the Spider-Verse obviously still has legs at the box office, despite competition from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, and The Flash.
Related Box Office Predictions: Can Spider-Man reclaim the top spot?
“When Miles Morales is unexpectedly approached by his best friend and love interest Gwen Stacy to complete a mission to save every universe of Spider-People from a mysterious new villain who could cause a catastrophic disaster, Miles is up for the challenge,” reads the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Earth becomes a battlefield for more than just the Autobots and Decepticons in the latest installment in the long-running “Transformers” motion picture series, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.”
The film tells the story of the Autobots on Earth, led by Optimus Prime, as they face yet another world-ending terror in the year 1994. When it’s clear that the Autobots can’t do it alone, they team up with the Maximals, a new, animalistic faction of Transformers, in order to save Earth once again.
“Transformer: Rise of the Beasts” stars Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Velez, and Dean Scott Vazquez. It currently has a 54% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but shoots up to 88% on the audience score. This puts it right in line with the other films in the series, known mostly as big, silly action films that won’t — and don’t want to — make for the next “Citizen Kane” or “The Godfather.

The big news about the new Transformers movie (not a sentence I envisioned writing while attending journalism school) is that this seventh installment features the first appearance of the Maximals on the big screen. Whether that information means anything to you or not will determine if you’re the target audience for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, a de facto sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee that features enough rock ‘em, sock ‘em robot action to thrill the faithful while showcasing appealing performances by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the token humans on hand.
The story begins in New York City circa 1994, providing plenty of opportunity for the soundtrack inclusion of classic ‘90s-era hip-hop cuts to complement the thundering score by Jongnic “Jb” Bontemps. We’re introduced to Noah (Ramos, In the Heights), a former Army private and tech wiz trying to make ends meet by setting up illegal cable boxes for his friends.

Sixteen years after Sam Raimi’s first Peter Parker adventure and a decade after the introduction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse revolutionized superhero cinema. A visual marvel (pun intended) backed by witty humor, a deep heart and an understanding of what makes the character so beloved, it was not only the best Spider-Man movie, but potentially the greatest superhero movie ever made. Now, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proves it was no fluke.
Building on the boundless creativity and imagination of its predecessor, Across the Spider-Verse infuses the genre with much-needed vitality and imagination, overwhelming audiences with an aesthetic audacity never seen in an animated film from a major studio. It stretches the boundaries of comic book cinema and takes advantage of the freedom animation provides without losing sight of what made the first film so special.

One of the best scenes in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is between our protagonist, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), and his mother Rio Morales (Luna Lauren Vélez). It's one of those heartfelt speeches from a parental figure that is an indelible part of the Spider-Man narrative.
Before Rio gives Miles permission to go after Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), she straightens his jacket and studies him with a look of nostalgia and affection. Rio tells her son that after raising her "little boy," now it is his turn to make his own way in the world — even though she knows it cannot promise him the same safety or comfort that she can. Rio has no idea that Miles' secret identity as Spider-Man makes his world even more dangerous.
In this way, she encourages Miles to protect his inner child as he continues to...

Spider-Man stories have been on our screens for over two decades now. In that time we’ve seen plenty of villains, sidekicks, and adventures, including multiverse crossovers. So, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse doesn’t sound like it can offer anything new or exciting, it sounds like a concept we’ve seen the MCU dive deep into in the last few years. What Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse does is blow any of those Spider-Man stories and multiverse stories out the window, bringing the most exciting, original, and fresh superhero movie since the first instalment (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). This latest instalment shows...

Even if you know going in that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s story will conclude in a later movie, it’s still frustrating when those end credits roll. When we leave Miles Morales at the end of the film, he has discovered that he was never supposed to be a Spidey. He’s an outlier in the grand Marvel multiverse, having been bitten by a radioactive spider from another universe. As a result, that universe (Earth-42) went on to have no Spider-Man at all, and its own Miles turned into The Prowler, perhaps due to his close relationship with Uncle Aaron.
As Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara and his Spider Society hunt Miles down to make sure he doesn’t disrupt any more canon events, Gwen Stacy puts together a team to back Miles up that includes some of his old pals,...

When it comes to practicing empathy and understanding diverse experiences, the multiverse is the perfect fictional sandbox in which storytellers can explore. Wisdom dictates that seeing more of the world makes most people more empathetic and understanding of one another, so what happens when characters get out and explore the worlds? The answer is something like "Everything Everywhere All At Once," last year's Best Picture Oscar winner and a film that uses the everything-ness of its title to tell a story that's at once massive and personal. Profound and empathetic, with an awe-inspiringly wide-ranging scope and visuals to match, "Everything Everywhere All At Once" is unlike any other movie.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's "Spider-Verse" films are a little bit like it, though. Miller said as much in an interview with Empire earlier this year, noting that the films' success...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has finally arrived.
After a nearly five-year wait, the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s breakthrough (and Oscar-winning) “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is here. And it’s magnificent. Shameik Moore returns as Miles Morales, who thanks to his friendship with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) is drawn into a tangled web (get it?) of all-new Spider-characters like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Spider-Woman Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Spider-Man India (Karan Soni) and the breakout new character Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya). Together, they are facing off against the evil new villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), a character that could threaten the existence of every dimension.
TheWrap spoke to Moore, Steinfeld and Johnson, as well as Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez (who play Miles’ doting parents) about the new movie and what aspect they’re most excited about. (You can watch the video above.)
“This felt really ambitious.
