Officially, Prime Video’s spy drama Mr. and Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name. Unofficially, however, its origins are a bit murkier. Though this 2024 streaming iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares its basic premise with the previous Brad Pitt and Angelina-starring version (a married couple who also happen to be spies), the series diverges from it in some major ways as well.
In an interview with The Today Show, Glover (who also co-created the 2024 series) even admitted to not having seen the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film when he decided to embark upon the project. Co-creator Francesca Sloane wrote in an open letter to fans that “No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

Yesterday, we shared a new interview with director Renny Harlin that mostly focuses on his latest film, the action movie The Bricklayer, which was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release earlier this month. But the interview also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects, including the 1999 shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. During his conversation with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Harlin revealed that Samuel L. Jackson’s character – and therefore the famous scene involving that character – was added into the script at the last minute.
Harlin said, “The whole scene has its roots in the fact that I had done Long Kiss Goodnight with Sam, and we sort of made a pact that we would always work together as often as we can. So then Deep Blue Sea came up and Sam called me and he’s like,...

The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

2024 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the Renny Harlin shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here) – and some fans feel the best way for distributor Warner Bros. to celebrate would be to release the film’s original ending. There’s a petition to let Warner Bros. know there’s interest in this idea, and the campaign has not only earned a show of support from the film’s star Thomas Jane (who said it would be “kinda fun” to see if fans can get the studio’s attention), but even a financial contribution from Harlin, who felt his contribution might help with the legitimacy of this fan movement.

Everyone who worked with James Gandolfini on the cast of "The Sopranos" sings his praises loudly and proudly. The generous and charming actor became friendly with just about everyone on the show, but even he got into arguments with his co-stars from time to time. The show involved a lot of intense back-and-forth, but perhaps no one butted heads with Gandolfini's character Tony as much as his sister Janice. As it turns out, the actress who played Janice, Aida Turturro, liked to push Gandolfini's buttons in real life, too.
"I knew him from 1992 and we used to fight back then, not really fight, but we were like husband and wife," Turturro told the New York Post. "I fell in love with him the first time we met; I felt like we were kindred spirits. I was like, 'Listen, you're not the boss of me, mister!' and I used to drive him crazy.

It’s time for a new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that has a lot of fans: the 1999 Renny Harlin shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about this movie, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Harlin from a screenplay by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, Deep Blue Sea has the following synopsis:
On an island research facility, Dr. Susan McAlester is harvesting the brain tissue of DNA-altered sharks as a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease. When the facility’s backers send an executive to investigate the experiments, a routine procedure goes awry and a shark starts attacking the researchers. Now, with sharks outnumbering their human captors, McAlester and her team must figure out a way to stop them from escaping to the ocean and breeding.
Directed by Harlin from a screenplay by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, Deep Blue Sea has the following synopsis:

As The Blacklist heads to Season 9’s finale, Red Reddington (James Spader) is getting more and more desperate to uncover the real mastermind behind the murder of his beloved Liz Keen (Megan Boone), a former FBI Task Force agent and the framing of the longtime unit’s chief Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix). After many misleads, a number of dead bodies, and the uncovering of some involved in the crimes — the international criminal mastermind and FBI asset has finally come to realize that the person behind it all, is someone close to him, someone in his vast organization less than savory types. In the above exclusive sneak peek of the May 13 episode, we see Red coldly interrogate his longtime accountant (and skilled embezzler) Heddie Hawkins (Aida Turturro), who absolutely protests her innocence of Liz’s murder. But when Red’s lawyer Marvin Gerard (Fisher Stevens) arrives with a witness against her,...

One of the more unique aspects of "The Sopranos" was the way it killed off its major characters. Season 2 featured its main antagonistic figure Richie Aprile (David Proval) being taken down not by any of the main gangsters, but by a spur-of-the-moment decision made by his fiancée, Janice (Aida Turturro). Season 4 showed Ralph (Joe Pantoliano) getting killed halfway through the episode out of retaliation for suspicion of him killing a horse. It would've been more expected for Ralph to get whacked back in season 3 when he was acting like a full liability to the crew; instead he's killed after he's mellowed out...

There are a whole lot of cigarettes in “Call Jane,” a detail — along with flip bob hairstyles and polyester pantsuits — that demonstrates director Phyllis Nagy’s commitment to the late-’60s period, even as it shows that the movie isn’t trying to tell women what to do with their bodies. Inspired by true events, this Sundance-blessed abortion drama takes place more than 50 years ago, but it could hardly be more timely today, as the Supreme Court considers several cases with the potential to roll back the freedoms granted by Roe v. Wade. Set in 1968, half a decade before that decision, the movie tells the story of the Chicago-based network of activists who called themselves the Jane Collective — a clandestine group of women committed to helping other women find a safe way to get illegal abortions. As the tagline goes, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

Phyllis Nagy’s screenplays have brought her many accolades, including an Oscar nom for “Carol.” The writer, who also teaches at UCLA, brings her second directorial effort, “Call Jane,” to AFM. The film, which stars Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mara and Chris Messina, is set in the 1960s and follows Joy (Banks) whose pregnancy is tainted by the threat it poses to her own life. She has nowhere to turn until she stumbles upon the Janes, an underground group of women united by Virginia (Sigourney Weaver), who risk everything to provide people like Joy with choices. Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi wrote the script. Nagy talked to Variety about the film.

In the opening scenes of Alan Taylor’s “The Many Saints of Newark,” Christopher Moltisanti’s ghost rises from the concrete of Pier 49 to follow his father, Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola), and eight-year-old Tony Soprano (William Ludwig). Young Tony skips through the sharply dressed ‘60s-era crowd, play-fighting with his Uncle Dickie. The piercing cry of three seagulls sweeps across the pier. Young Tony smiles. And the disembodied voice of Christopher describes how, 40 years from now, this grinning kid, his very own Uncle Tony, will murder him.
Nearly all of the stories in “The Sopranos” universe are told by men and boys: The newest is even narrated by a male ghost. A-list talent? Over here! When existential mob family drama The Sopranos premiered in 1999, it arguably redefined HBO and the TV landscape as a whole, with James Gandolfini starring as patriarch Tony Soprano, who tries to balance his responsibilities to blood relatives along with the pressures of being part of one of the Five Families. Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler made up the New Jersey suburban Soprano family, while Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico, Steven Van Zandt, Vincent Pastore, Steve Schirripa and Joe Pantoliano rounded out Tony's mob crew. And then there was Tony's sister (Aida Turturro) and cousin (Steve...

It’s kind of amazing how celebrities can fade in and out of the news along with their roles in certain movies or TV shows, as their popularity can wax and wane kind of like a high and low tide sometimes. Most of the celebrities that do this are constantly on the radar of many people since they’re still working and they haven’t gone anywhere other than to work just like usual. But stars such as Aida Turturro, whose cousin in John Turturro, kind of come and go as they will since they’re often considered minor celebrities or they’re given substantial

The cast of one of the most memorable shows in television history, HBO’s The Sopranos, reunited tonight for a special table read to benefit actor and former fireman Steve Buscemi’s favorite charity, Friends of Firefighters.
Highlighting the gathering was a cast read of a brand-new sketch cowritten by series creator David Chase and longtime writer/executive producer Terence Winter.
Titled “Bada Bing, Bada Zoom,” the sketch had cast members reuniting for an online group therapy session with Dr. Jennifer Melfi, the therapist who coaxed Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini) through many difficult moments on the series.
The entire webcast, along with the sketch, is available online here.
The 2.5-hour reunion raised more than $100,000 for Friends of Firefighters, slightly more than its goal. There will be a follow-up gathering chaired by Buscemi later this month with some different celebrity friends (see below for details) for the same charity.

Jo Andres, Steve Buscemi’s wife of 31 years and a prominent filmmaker and choreographer, has died. She was 64.
Buscemi was photographed participating in her funeral, which included a wicker casket, Wednesday morning in Brooklyn, New York. Buscemi’s “Big Lebowski” co-star, John Turturro, and his cousin, “Sopranos” star Aida Turturro, were seen paying visits to the home. Firefighters from Buscemi’s ladder company also paid their respects.
The cause of death has not been released.
The couple married in 1987, and Andres drew acclaim in 1996 for her film “Black Kites,” which played at Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto and aired on PBS. Andres’ website describes the film, which is based on 1992 journals of Bosnian visual artist Alma Hajric, who was forced into a basement shelter to survive the siege of Sarajevo, as “non-linear, dreamlike and spectral.”

The Sopranos brought violence home to the family one hit at a time.
The Sopranos changed the entire TV landscape when it debuted on HBO. Living in the shadow, and sometimes under the thumb of New York's commission of five families, Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) led what his friends across the river considered a glorified crew through a violent change of power. David Chase envisioned the series about the rise and fall of a New Jersey mobster as a dark comedy, and indeed, even some of the mob ordered executions could be seen as great examples of physical comedy just as much as others are grisly reminders of day to day life as a working member of a mafia crew.
Here, we've chosen ten hits, which doesn't imply greatest hits of the series, it only means these are more or less sanctioned by the commission. We also...

"Sounds like you need to own up to some of the things you've done." Cleopatra Entertainment has released an official trailer for a film titled Making a Killing, a crime drama from filmmaker Devin Hume. The film is about three morticians who get caught up in a web of greed and deceit, involving buried treasure and a tangled love affair, in this modern day crime mystery that is, apparently, based on a true story. Michael Jai White stars in this as Officer Hudson, along with Mike Starr, Jack Forcinito, Sally Kirkland, Aida Turturro, and Christopher Lloyd. This looks crazy weird and wacky and totally low budget, not really in a good way. The best part about this is Michael Jai White, who looks like he's having all kinds of fun in this role with the cowboy hat and all. But this film really looks quite awful, thankfully the trailer is free to watch.

But, since it happened when she was in the middle of a revolt on Richard’s behalf against Eliza — and the temporary promotion came at the expense of coconspirator Meredith — it was neither fine nor dandy. A review of tonight's Brooklyn Nine-Nine coming up just as soon as I wear short pants and drink from a jug that says "XXX"... We're in the midst of an interesting experiment for the show as we near the end of season 3. Not only is this Pimento arc the most serialized Brooklyn has ever been, but it's also more dramatic than the series tends to be. It's not suddenly The Wire (though Jake would love that), but it wants us to believe that Pimento is really in fear for his life, that Diaz is genuinely upset about his absence, and that Santiago could really get hurt during this prison undercover operation. It's not the first time Brooklyn has dabbled in more serious crimes — remember, Jake helped Captain Holt get his command back by catching a serial killer — but it creates a really narrow tonal target for the show, which is...
