Australian actors Deborah Mailman and Rachel Griffiths have begun production on the final six-episode season of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s award-winning female-led political drama series “Total Control.”
With screenplays by Stuart Page, Julia Moriarty, Pip Karmel and Meyne Wyatt, season three picks up almost two years after the explosive events of the second season.
Outsider turned kingmaker, Alex Irving (Mailman), is completely at home in the nation’s capital. While Rachel Anderson (Griffiths), now an occasional ally, is threatening to upend the entire system by establishing her own political party. However, as Alex attempts to carve out a nation changing legacy, a controversy engineered by her enemies threatens to destroy her career and public reputation. In the final season, Alex must make a choice: either she can stay true to her principles and accept defeat, or she can get her hands dirty and fight back.

Hulu has picked up U.S. rights to the Australian series Vanishing Act, a mystery crime drama based on the real-life disappearance of Australian high-roller Melissa Caddick.
Caddick was an Australian businesswoman who allegedly swindled her family and friends out of millions of dollars to bankroll her lavish lifestyle of designer clothes, fast cars, expensive real estate and flash holidays.
But the day after police raided her home, Caddick disappeared. Months later, her shoe is found, washed up on a deserted beach – with her disembodied foot inside. The case spawned major media attention and wild speculation that Caddick was murdered, or that she deliberately cut off her own foot and went into hiding.
The three-part series, produced by Screentime Banijay for Nine Network Australia, stars Kate Atkinson (Wentworth) as Caddick, alongside Colin Friels, Jerome Velinsky, and Maya Stange. Dcd Rights is handling international sales.

The Australian horror film Killing Ground has a lot of great performances, but it doesn’t quite deliver on its promise...
There’s no denying that Killing Ground is an impressive debut feature. Writer-director Damien Power, making the step up from short film, pens winningly realistic dialogue and always finds unique framing for his shots. The stylistic stuff is nicely done, but the substance it’s wrapped around leaves a bit to be desired.
The basic set up isn’t really the problem, and it’s simple enough: two separate camping trips take place in the Australian wilderness, and neither group stays happy campers for long. Harriet Dyer and Ian Meadows put in highly likeable performances as Sam and Ian, a smitten young couple who take a tent to the beach and soon come to regret it. Julian Garner, Maya Strange and Tiarnie Coupland play a similarly adorable family, who...

Distributors in the Us, UK and Germany have bought Drown, an Australian drama which its director Dean Francis describes as confronting and controversial. Adapted from Stephen Davis. play which prompted walk outs when it was staged by the Queensland Theatre Company, the film centres on three surf lifesavers whose big night out is marred by jealousy, homophobic fears, unrequited lust and violence.
The night culminates in a tragic, booze-fuelled episode of bullying. There is a graphic gay sex scene, says Francis, who does not want to speculate on the likely film classification.
The international sales agent, London-based High Point Films & TV, showed a work-in-progress to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market.
German distributor Salzgeber quickly signed a deal and is planning a national cinema release. Subsequently Strand Releasing bought the rights for the Us, where it will have a niche theatrical release, and Peccadillo Pictures, which specialises in art house,...

The antics of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 22 Jump Street proved irresistible for Australian cinemagoers last weekend.

Cameras have begun rolling on new film Galore, from writer-director Rhys Graham.
Shot in Canberra, the film is produced by Philippa Campey, with executive producers Sue Murray, Victoria Treole and Eleonora Granata-Jenkinson. Hopscotch Films is distributing with Entertainment One handling international sales.
The film features Ashleigh Cummings of Tomorrow When the War Began and Puberty Blues, Toby Wallace of Nim’s Island 2, Lily Sullivan of Mental and Maya Stange of Garage Days.
The story follows four teenagers who are living life to the fullest until the bush fires of 2002 throw their lives into a world of grief and heartbreak.
Campey said of Graham’s story: “This is an intensely personal film for Rhys Graham, one of Australia’s most exciting new film talents. His screenplay, which has such a strong sense of place given his intimacy with the very particular world of Canberra’s outer suburbs, is a work of incredible beauty and power.

Only one Australian feature film has so far made it into official selection for the 69th Venice International Film Festival.
Disaster-shark film Bait 3D, directed by Kimble Rendall, will screen out of competition at the prestigious film festival, it was announced overnight.
The film sees a group of shoppers trapped in an underground supermarket after a tsunami strikes the coast which has sent a school of sharks into the building.
The film, produced by Arclight Films, was shot on the Gold Coast at Village Roadshow Studios in 2010. It stars Xavier Samuel, Julian McMahon, Sharni Vinson and Dan Wylie. It will be distributed in the Us by Anchor Bay Films.
The Out of Competition section is billed as ‘important works by directors already established in previous editions of the festival.’

A Sony Pictures Classics film starring Billy Bob Thornton as an ex-convict on his way to redemption after serving a 19-year murder sentence will set the stage for the 2003 Sundance Film Festival as the opening-night film in Salt Lake City on Jan. 16. The Ed Solomon-directed Levity also features a name cast of Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst. The Park City roster then kicks into gear the next night with the Premiere Category selection The Singing Detective, from Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey's Icon Prods. Gibson also stars in the Keith Gordon-helmed feature, which is about a writer (Robert Downey Jr.) who hallucinates musical numbers and paranoid plots. Robin Wright Penn, Adrien Brody and Katie Holmes round out the cast. Both star-heavy projects are indicative of the other selections in Sundance's Premiere Category, most of which star top-level Hollywood talent. Included in the set is the Larry Charles-helmed Masked and Anonymous, from Intermedia Film and Spitfire Pictures, which stars Bob Dylan as a musician who encounters a cast of characters played by Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, Val Kilmer, Jeff Bridges, Luke Wilson, Ed Harris, Angela Bassett and others on his way to a benefit concert after his release from jail. Al Pacino, Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger and Ryan O'Neal turn out in Miramax Films' People I Know from director Daniel Algrant. The drama, set for release next year after a postponement because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, finds Pacino as a New York publicist who gets drawn into the world of politics and celebrity when his famous actor-client becomes involved in a scandal. The star contingent continues with Lions Gate Films' Confidence, directed by James Foley. Dustin Hoffman, Edward Burns and Andy Garcia topline the story of a con man's latest scam that puts him in debt with the Mafia. Paul Giamatti, Donal Logue, Rachel Weisz and Morris Chestnut round out the cast. Fox Searchlight Pictures has two films in the Premiere Category with Jim Sheridan's In America, starring Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine, and Alex Proyas' Garage Days featuring Kick Gurry, Maya Stange and Pia Miranda.
