It seemed appropriate that the location for the annual Women in Motion dinner in Cannes should be at Place de la Castre, atop Suquet Hill where victors of yore could survey their domain. It was certainly the case that honored guest Dame Donna Langley had captured the castle.
Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch struck the right note when when she remarked to the NBCUniversal Studio Group Chair and Chief Content Officer, and other guests, that “you are sometimes introduced as one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, but in reality you are one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, regardless of gender.”
And it’s true.
Knobloch continued, ”Yes, women can be great leaders, just like you. Yes, woman can be successful, just like you. Yes, women can take risks, just like you. And yes, women can manage 10-figure budgets, just like you.”

Many of cinema’s hard men are notorious softies in real life. Ray Winstone may well be one of those, even if he admits to not looking particularly approachable.
“My wife always says to me, ‘Why do you look like you’re going to kill someone when you walk into a room?'” he tells Variety. “But I don’t mean to!”
Winstone’s long-standing status as the go-to man to depict violent approach-with-caution individuals or British mob bosses continues to serve him, however, as “The Gentleman” — Guy Ritchie’s eight-part Netflix spinoff of his 2019 gangster comedy feature of the same name — proves. In the series, awash in the classic Ritchie mix of guns, drugs, violence, aristocrats, boxing and tweed, Winstone stars as a gangland patriarch and head of a massive weed-growing empire. Because of course he does — who else would you cast as an elder statesman than the actor...

As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Dear England will run at the Cameron Mackintosh-owned Prince Edward Theatre in Soho, London for a 14-week season from October 9. National Theatre Productions is producing.

If there’s one thing we’re not short of on this strange little island, it’s funny people. When life is good, we’re laughing. When things get weird, we’re laughing. And when everything falls apart, somehow we’re still laughing.
From top bants to gallows humour, you can always rely on the British to bring the LOLs, and from Charlie Chaplin through to Monty Python and Fleabag, British comedy seems to translate pretty well worldwide too, meaning there’s plenty on offer on Netflix.
So if you’re sick of rewatching the same old sitcoms and looking for fresh laughs, we recommend these British comedy hidden gems on Netflix:

Richard Osman has issued a warning to his Twitter followers as the social media platform begins to remove the blue checkmarks that distinguish verified profiles from accounts that are paying for them.
On Wednesday (19 April), Twitter announced: “Tomorrow, 4/20, we are removing legacy verified checkmarks.” The company then posted links to where individuals and organisations can sign up to pay to remain verified.
In a quote tweet, Pointless presenter and author Osman wrote to his 1.2 million followers: “Farewell blue tick, old friend. Don’t forget, always set your feed to ‘Following’ rather than ‘For You’. Then you’ll keep seeing the people you actually follow, and not people who’ve paid for attention.”
Twitter said it is getting rid of its “legacy” blue ticks today following Elon Musk’s contentious decision to change the platform’s verification system.

Paul Whitehouse has said he’s not normally as angry as he appears on Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
The BBC Two series follows Whitehouse and fellow comedian Bob Mortimer on various fishing trips around the UK as the pair discuss their respective heart problems.
Whitehouse is a keen angler and often gets frustrated with Mortimer’s lack of technique – the former’s constant reminders of “Don’t wind!” has become the show’s unofficial catchphrase.
Appearing on Kathy Burke’s podcast Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, Whitehouse was asked if he was “surprised” at how angry he got at his colleague “because you don’t half snap at him sometimes”, Burke said.
“I’m not an angry person Kathy, you know that,” the Harry and Paul star responded.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you lose your temper,” Burke confirmed.

A mural dedicated to the late Paul O’Grady has been covered up days after it was painted in Manchester.
The drag performer and presenter died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on 28 March aged 67.
Following the news, artist Chris Moore – who goes by the name Manchester Murals – created a tribute to O’Grady on the Fallowfield Loop in south Manchester.
Moore painted a large black-and-white mural showing the dog-loving presenter alongside a spaniel with a tennis ball in its mouth.
However, just a few days later, the mural was covered up by another artist’s piece.
Speaking to BBC News, Moore said that, while it was a “shame” his painting had been covered, this was just “part of the street art scene”.

Timothy Schofield was convicted of 11 sexual offences involving a child between October 2016 and October 2019, including two of sexual activity with a child, following a trial at Exeter Crown Court.
In a statement released by his lawyer following the verdicts, ITV presenter Phillip said: “My overwhelming concern is and has always been for the wellbeing of the victim and his family.
“I hope that their privacy will now be respected. If any crime had ever been confessed to me by my brother, I would have acted immediately to protect the victim and their family.“
“These are despicable crimes, and I welcome the guilty verdicts. As far as I am concerned, I no longer have a brother.”

Jack Black has said he will “call Elon Musk’s bluff” over his Twitter blue tick verifcation.
Musk, who owns the social media platform, announced the company was going to remove blue ticks from the accounts of legacy verified users from 1 April, meaning only accounts that paid the company $8 or $11 per month would have the badge.
However, users noticed that, instead of losing their verification status, Twitter has seemingly instead removed information differentiating between legacy verified accounts and Twitter Blue subscribers.
It remains to be seen if Musk’s promises blue tick removal will proceed – although New York Times lost its verification on Sunday (2 April).
School of Rock actor Black has weighed in on the matter, telling Variety: “I don’t know if I’m going to pay for it.”

Lily Allen has hit out at the “misogynistic and awful” music industry amid her burgeoning acting career.
The star had chart-topping success in the 2000s with songs “Smile” and “The Fear”, and has released four records, the most recent arriving in 2018.
However, in 2021, she starred in the stage play 2:22: A Ghost Story, and is now set to make her TV debut in comedy drama Dreamland. Following this, Allen will co-lead new Martin McDonagh play The Pillowman on the West End later this year.
Allen acknowleged that the career gearshift might take her music fans by surprise, but said it was actually “more surprising” that she embarked on a music career.
“It is the family business,” she told The Times, referring to her acting father, Keith Allen, and brother, Alife Allen.

It’s been almost nine years since the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams shook the entertainment world to its core.
The star of films including Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting and Night at the Museum was 63 when he died on 11 August 2014.
Despite the time that has passed, anecdotes of the countless good deeds he did for others continue to be shared, most recently when Nathan Lane revealed how Williams protected him during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
One of Williams’ most popular films was Jumanji, the 1995 blockbuster co-starring Bonnie Hunt and Jonathan Hyde.
It also featured Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce, who were child stars at the time. In 2020, celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary, Pierce revealed how Williams once stepped in to defend him from over-demanding producers.
Jumanji followed two children whose worlds collides with Williams’s Alan Parrish, who got sucked into the magical board game as a young boy.

Charlize Theron and Michelle Rodriguez have proven themselves skilled enough fighters that they didn’t need a director while filming their Fast X fight sequence.
The two return to the popular Fast and Furious franchise in the 10th film, with Theron reprising her role as notorious cyberterrorist Cipher and Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, the wife of lead street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel).
In the action movie’s trailer, released last month, Cipher and Ortiz engage in an all-out, epic brawl after waking up in a science lab together.
Speaking to Vanity Fair in a new interview about the scene, Rodriguez explained that they “shot our [Fast X] fight sequence with no director”.
“Can I just tell you – no pun intended, but Charlize is a monster,” the Avatar actor praised.
“Bro, like, hands down, drop mic, we nailed it. We were there, we don’t need [a director], let’s do this.

South Park has mocked Andrew Tate in their latest episode.

Waddingham appeared on This Morning on Friday (31 March), with host Dermot O’Leary saying that the show is “about football, but it’s not really about football”.
“I’m so glad you said that, because I wonder sometimes if British audiences don’t watch it because they think it’s about football,” Waddingham theorised.
“But it’s actually about very much the human condition that we find through comedy, all the ridiculous things about ourselves, with the backdrop of football. A brilliant backdrop of football, but it’s about all of us supporting each other.

It’s been eight years since Taskmaster first started – and series 15 has arrived just months after the previous ended.
Returning to host proceedings are Greg Davies and Alex Horne, and joining them for the latest iteration is a bunch of comedians who could well provide the comedy show with its best line-up in a while.
Heading up the contestants for series 15 is Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle.
Boyle’s appearance on the show comes days after it was announced that the BBC had cancelled his series New World Order – something he said “didn’t come as a surprise”.
A BBC spokesperson commented: “We would like to thank Frankie Boyle and all those involved for six great series of New World Order.”
The corporation also made it clear that they are not severing ties with Boyle, adding: “We look forward to seeing what he does next on the BBC.”

Prince Harry has been condemned by Caroline Flack’s former agent for sharing details about his “tainted” romance with the late star in his new memoir Spare.
In a section of the tell-all book, which leaked after the memoir was accidentally put on sale in Spain five days early, Harry writes about how he met the former Love Island host, who died by suicide in 2020, at a restaurant during a night out with their mutual friend in 2009.
Describing Flack as “funny”, “sweet”, and “cool”, he shared: “Very soon after [the media] papped me and Flack, those photos set off a frenzy. Within hours a mob was camped outside Flack’s parents’ house, and all her friends’ houses, and her grandparents’ house.”
“She was described in one paper as my ‘bit of rough’, because she once worked in a factory or something,” he continued. “Jesus, I thought, are we really such a country of insufferable snobs?...

Jeremy Clarkson has reportedly closed a restaurant at his Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, following a planning row.
The former Top Gear star, who now appears in Amazon Prime’sThe Grand Tourand Clarkson’s Farm, opened the venue in a barn last July, where there is also a farm shop.
The restaurant, which was situated in a field at the 1000 acre site, prompted protests from people living in the village of Chadlington.
Many locals claimed the restaurant led to disruption and heavy traffic, disturbing the peaceful rural area.
The restaurant was closed after an enforcement order from Cotswold council officials in August, with Clarkson initially determined to fight the decision. He argued that the venue did not break any planning rules.
The Sunday Mirror has now reported that Clarkson has given up. He wrote a letter to West Oxfordshire District Council, saying he had been “thwarted” by the enforcement notice.
