Christopher B. Stokes, the directors of such films as House Party 4, You Got Served, Somebody Help Me, Somebody Help Me 2, The Stepmother, and The Stepmother 2, is about to send four more movies out into the world over the course of just three months – and it’s all thanks to the Tubi streaming service. Continuing to get into original programming (previous Tubi originals include the Terror Train remake and its sequel), Tubi has teamed up with Footage Films to bring four “Black cinema thrillers” to their service. Stokes has directed all four of the movies and wrote the scripts for each one with Marques Houston.
First up is The Assistant, which is set to reach Tubi on January 20th. Variety reports that The Assistant follows doctor Raven Fields (Erica Mena) who finds herself drowning in work and looks to hire an assistant to help with her day-to-day. Taking a chance on a young and cheery woman,...

Tubi is set to launch four new original Black cinema thrillers from Footage Films: “The Assistant,” “Best Friend,” “You’re Not Alone” and “No Way Out.”
The four upcoming thrillers are directed by Christopher B. Stokes from scripts the filmmaker co-wrote with Marques Houston. Stokes and Houston also serve as executive producers on the films, with Footage Films president Juanita Stokes as producer. Tubi has previously worked with Footage Films on several original films, including “The Stepmother” and “The Stepmother 2.”
Per the logline, “The Assistant” follows doctor Raven Fields (Erica Mena) who “finds herself drowning in work and looks to hire an assistant to help with her day-to-day. Taking a chance on a young and cheery woman, Raven believes she’s found the perfect person until assistance turns into obsession, and she risks losing everything, including her life.” In addition to Mena, the film stars Parker McKenna Posey, Flex Alexander,...

If there was ever a celebrity who understands the concept of being booked and busy, it's Kyla Pratt. The 34-year-old Los Angeles native got her start as a child star in the early '90s, appearing in series such as Living Single, The Parent 'Hood, and Smart Guy, as well as beloved films like The Baby-Sitters Club, Love & Basketball, and Barney's Great Adventure. She became a household name with her role as Maya Dolittle, the daughter of Eddie Murphy's titular character in the Dr. Dolittle franchise - which she eventually became the main character of, starting with Dr. Dolittle 3.

If you grew up during the early/mid 2000s, you probably remember Flex Alexander as Flex Washington, the fictional character from the sitcom One on One. As a single hilarious single father, Flex won the hearts of countless viewers and established himself as a seriously talented actor who also has very impressive comedic timing. Although the role wasn’t the first the time Flex played a main character in a show, it still served as a breakout opportunity for him in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to recreate the success he had on One on One since the

Jerry O’Connell deserved better. Frankly, anyone does than this, though O’Connell in particular is a solid actor who has thrived in raunchy comedies before. However, this marks a career low-point, if not for him (he at least still tries) than his agent for passing this script on to him. Ballbuster is one of the worst movies that I’ve seen in years, deeply unfunny, indifferently made, and downright embarrassing for its cast and crew. That anyone gave money for this to be made boggles the mind. It’s being released today, though a more apt description is that it’s escaping. Avoid it at all costs. The flick is, supposedly, a comedy, though all evidence to the contrary. After an opening sequence showcasing how tough his father was on him, we meet star basketball player Rich Johnson (O’Connell) in his waning years. Trying to win his new team their first championship,...

Eunetta T. Boone was funny, sharp and extremely warm-hearted. That’s how WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt remembered Boone as he paid tribute to the showrunner who died Wednesday at the age of 63.
Greenblatt worked with Boone in the early 2000s when he was partnered with David Janollari in the Greenblatt-Janollari Studio production venture. Greenblatt-Janollari was the banner behind Boone’s Upn comedy “One on One,” starring Kyla Pratt and Flex Alexander, and the spinoff “Cuts.”
“One on One” ran for five seasons, from 2001 to 2006, making it one of the longest-lived series that Greenblatt-Janollari Studio produced during the banner’s 1997-2003 run.
“I’m so saddened at Eunetta’s passing,” Greenblatt told Variety. “She did three shows with me and David Janollari and she was one of the smartest and funniest writer/producers we ever worked with. But what really set her apart was her huge heart. She cared about...

The real stars of J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts,” of course, are the creatures themselves.
They’re animated by a gaggle of VFX all-stars: Framestore, Double Negative, Mpc, Image Engine, among others, overseen by production VFX supervisors Christian Manz and Tim Burke.
The mandate from “Harry Potter” veteran director David Yates was not too make the creatures overly fantastical and thereby unrelatable, which is why there are so many distinct animal influences. And originally the VFX supervisors envisioned individual environments for each beast inside the suitcase, but Rowlings suggested that wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) would have to be as powerful as Valdemort to pull that off, so they scaled it way back. Here are a few of the highlights:

Dialogue can make or break a film. However beautifully photographed the picture might be, however stimulating, thought-provoking or thrilling the story is, however captivating the score, if what the characters say is poorly conceived, that movie is operating on a significant handicap. The Roger Moore tenure in the 007 film franchise is indeed often criticized for be being the weakest of all the actors who played the part, but more for its frequent silliness…and the fact that Moore was 57 years old by the time his last outing, A View to a Kill, was made. Say what one will about Moore’s versatility as an actor (although doubters should either re-watch For Your Eyes Only or arguably his best non-Bond film, The Man Who Haunted Himself), the man was among the best in delivering witty, comical lines, often peppered with some sort of sexual innuendo. Chicago -- A gift of balloons. That, prosecutors contend, is what sent singer Jennifer Hudson's then brother-in-law into such a jealous rage that he shot dead her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in a horrific act of vindictiveness in the home where the Hollywood star grew up.
A prosecutor is expected to tell jurors that Monday during opening statements at the trial of William Balfour. He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the Oct. 24, 2008, slayings that generated nationwide headlines because of Hudson's fame.
The estranged husband of Hudson's sister, Balfour believed the balloons he saw at the Hudson home came from Julia Hudson's new boyfriend; driving away for her job as a school bus driver, she glimpsed Balfour in her mirror still lingering outside, prosecutors have said.

Chicago — Accustomed to wearing Vera Wang gowns on red carpets, singing at the Grammys or autographing her weight-loss memoir, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will take on a new role under a very different spotlight – in Chicago's drab criminal courts building at the trial of the man charged with murdering her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.
The Hollywood star's presence, and the accompanying media hubbub, is bound to affect the proceedings, which begin Monday. That's when presiding Judge Charles Burns plans to start questioning would-be jurors one by one, trying to weed out anyone who could be swayed by Hudson's celebrity status.
Hudson is expected to be at the trial every day once testimony begins, court officials say, and she's on the 300-name list of witnesses who could testify. While the judge will warn prospective jurors to avoid watching TV coverage of the trial, they may see Hudson on "American Idol" on Thursday.

Calleigh (Emily Procter) says he was found in the middle of Miami airspace, so he's most probably a stowaway from a plane. They both refer to him as 'Icarus' who flew too close to the sun and got burnt. His bone marrow shows signs of osteoporosis...

(An article from 2009 re-posted for your pleasure on this slow weekend)
In the wake of the shocking but not too surprising death recently of the ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson there will undoubtedly be a biopic(s) of the troubled star’s life hot-shotted into production.
(There has already been one rather creepy biopic on Mj made starring Flex Alex-fucking-ander – yes, the guy from Snakes on a Plane)
In light of this inevitable movie, here at Owf we decided to compile a list of the Top 10 music biopics we’re actually looking forward to seeing. Some of these artists have been the subject of long-rumoured projects that have not yet escaped development hell, while some of the others are just artists whose stories I think would make a pretty fucking awesome biopic.
Music divides opinion even more than cinema does so no doubt there will be many contentious points on my list,...

The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival, which ran for six days on March 22-27, has given awards to 27 experimental and avant-garde filmmakers. Among the winners are notable names such as Deborah Stratman, Ben Russell and Michael Robinson.
The full list of winners is below. All awards were picked by this year’s Aaff jury, which consisted of filmmakers Stephen Connolly, Rebecca Meyers and Vanessa Renwick, all of whom had non-competitive screenings at the fest, as well. The list is broken into two sections, the first being awards named by the fest while the second section are open-ended awards and given names by the jury.
All winners also received a cash prize, the most significant of which — $3,000 — went to the Ken Burns Award Best of the Festival winner Natasha Mendonca for her film Jan Villa, a 20-minute experimental documentary in which the filmmaker returns to Bombay after severe flooding in...

Calgary’s $100 Film Festival is a celebration of film. Not “film” as a concept, but of actual celluloid. This year, their 19th, is three nights of strictly 8mm and 16mm films — No Video! — screening at the historic Plaza Theatre on March 3-5.
Each night starts off with a real bang: A unique live film and music performance by local musicians and filmmakers. Thursday features the combination of blues musician Erin Ross and a film by Farrah Alladin and Nathan Taylor; Friday is experimental indie band Axis of Conversation and a film by Alex Mitchell; and Friday is musician Kris Ip Ryzak and a film by Ben Tsui.
Also on Friday, mixed in with the regular lineup of films, is a mini-retrospective of Montreal-based experimental filmmaker Alexandre Larose, featuring four of his films — Artifices, 930, Ville Marie and Brouillard. Then, after all films have screened for the night, Larose will host a...

Chicago – Tom Selleck is back on series television, portraying the patriarch of a New York City cop dynasty in “Blue Bloods” (not a bad pun), but this time he is the Chief of Police over the whole city. He still has time for Sunday dinner with the family, and he’s inviting TV fans to the table.
Television Rating: 3.0/5.0
The scope is pretty large for a typical cop show. Tom Selleck has the whole naked city to worry about, and he gets into even more hot water when his family intertwines with his duties. Besides the tough get-it-done attitude that officials like this usually have, Selleck also has to deal with the media, the mayor, a secret cop society and his own dicey love life. Blue Bloods premieres on CBS, Friday, September 24th, at 9pm Cst.

CBS' new drama "Blue Bloods" could go one of two ways: It could become a cop show whose main characters all happen to be related, or it could become a show about a family whose members all happen to work in law enforcement.
Either one would still boast a strong cast led by Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan and Donnie Wahlberg, and either one would be watchable. But based on what we saw in Friday's (Sept. 24) series premiere, we're pulling for the family element to be at least on equal footing with the crime stories.
The show was created by former "Sopranos" writers and producers Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, who know their way around a family dynamic. But it's also on CBS, which knows its way around a crime procedural. What we're hoping can happen is a melding of those two things similar to what has happened on "The Good Wife,...

CBS network recently gave the green light go-ahead to four hour-long dramas and two comedies for the 2010 season. It isn’t clear yet if everything will start this fall or if some shows may be mid season replacements, as the great “Eye” will have to do some reshuffling of the deck with its schedule. Hawaii Five-o (TV) starring the fan-favorite Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Cahn and Daniel Dae Kim (formally of Lost (TV)) was the sure-bet. This remake of the 1970s drama is produced by Fringe (TV)’s dynamic duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. You can bet with the casting and the location shots, this show will be overflowing with "pretty." Next up to bat will be Defenders (TV), a legal drama about some hot-shot Las Vegas defense attorneys, starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell. The pilot was penned by Niels Mueller and Kevin Kennedy, and will have executive...

Christian Slater is hoping his next venture isn't forgotten.
"The Forgotten" star is giving the pilot game another shot, having signed on to produce and star in a Fox comedy that centers on a team that uses their genius intellects to get past security systems, says The Hollywood Reporter.
In the untitled Adam Goldberg pilot, Slater will play the curmudgeonly, ex-military leader of the Titan Team.
Also joining in the fun is Trevor Moore, who will be the head of reconnaissance.
In other pilot casting news:
- Tate Donovan, lately of "Damages," is heading to ABC for the "No Ordinary Family" drama pilot playing a "mysterious pilot." The project centers on an American family, headed by patriarch Jim (Michael Chiklis), that develops new powers.
- Caitlin Fitzgerald is in, and Kaitlin Doubleday is out of "Most Likely to Succeed," the Fox comedy pilot about a group of friends who rocked...

Who hasn't, at one point in their life, secretly (or not so secretly, if you were intoxicated) tried to use The Force? Maybe the television remote was just out of your reach, and so you concentrated real hard and hoped it would magically move into your hand. Hey, we've been there -- don't feel ashamed. Well what if I told you that within the next year, a toy was hitting stores that actually allowed you to use The Force? Yup, totally serious about this one -- USA Today tells us that The Force Trainer will run somewhere around $90-100, and it "comes with a headset that uses brain waves to allow players to manipulate a sphere within a clear 10-inch-tall training tower, analogous to Yoda and Luke Skywalker's abilities in the Star Wars films."
But this isn't the only mind-control game hitting the market in 2009; apparently Mattel also has something...

He's played a CIA agent on Alias and now fights crime as a mind-reading police officer on Heroes. But Greg Grunberg says he's not the star in the family. "Jake is my hero, he really is," Grunberg, 41, tells People about his 12-year-old son, who has epilepsy. "He doesn't let anything stop him, and to deal with everything with your head up high, that to me is a true hero." His son has been the inspiration behind his involvement in raising awareness about the neurological disorder, which includes raising funds for pediatric epilepsy research. As drummer for Band From TV, Grunberg...

Lauren Ambrose is set to star opposite Parker Posey in Fox's comedy pilot The Return of Jezebel James, while James Van Der Beek has joined ABC's drama pilot Football Wives.
Additionally, Charles Esten will topline ABC's comedy pilot American Family, Scott Wolf has landed the lead in ABC's untitled Sachs/Judah project, and Fred Goss, Jerry Minor and Jerry O'Connell have been tapped to star in ABC's comedy pilot Carpoolers. Ray Stevenson is set for a lead role on CBS' Babylon Fields, Molly Parker and Josh Hopkins have joined CBS' drama pilot Swingtown, and Kathryn Hahn, Flex Alexander, Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays have come aboard ABC's comedy pilot Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office.
Jezebel, from Regency TV, centers on a single book editor (Posey) who can't conceive and asks her estranged younger sister (Ambrose) to carry her baby. Ambrose, who co-starred on HBO's Six Feet Under as Claire Fisher, is repped by UTA, manager Michael Garnett and attorney Harris Hartman.
Wives, from ABC TV Studio, follows the wives of professional football players.

In a curious but acutely unpleasant way, the crass snowboarding comedy "Out Cold" is the mutant offspring of those old '60s beach movies in which a bunch of crazy kids take time out from catching a wave to save the clubhouse.
Of course, this being 40 years later, everything has to be more extreme, including the sophomoric high jinks and the limited attention spans of first-time feature directors the Malloys (brothers Brendan and Emmett), who can't seem to hang on to any thread of story lasting longer than one of their music videos.
While the presence of pro boarders doing their thing might be a selling point for enthusiasts, the predominantly lame goings-on will leave others snow-bored. Look for this Touchstone Pictures/Buena Vista Thanksgiving offering -- which is definitely not for the kiddies -- to make a swift butt-stop at the local Blockbuster.
Set in Alaska but shot outside of Vancouver, Jon Zack's slightest hint of a script concerns the exploits of a bunch of snowboarding buddies whose endless good times on Bull Mountain could be seriously curtailed by the death of town founder Papa Muntz (the late Lewis Arquette).
It seems his son Ted (Willie Garson) has up and sold the aging hangout to slick developer John Majors (Lee Majors), who intends to convert it into a shiny ski resort.
But Rick (Jason London), Luke (Zach Galifianakis), Anthony (Flex Alexander) and Pig Pen (Derek Hamilton) have other ideas -- including some that have nothing to do with flipping outhouses or having improper conduct with a Jacuzzi jet -- and manage to save the day.
There are a couple of chuckle-worthy gags, but for the most part, a collection of sports bloopers would have been funnier. Essentially the story line is simply killing time before it can cut to another snowboarding sequence or find an excuse for another lovely young woman to peel off her bra (photographed, naturally, from the back in order to preserve the integrity of that PG-13 rating).
On the plus side, the cast appears to be enjoying its winter vacation, and the budget-conscious crew gets the job done with a minimum of fussy flourishes under those impossibly blue Alaskan, er, British Columbian skies.

Flex Alexander will play Michael Jackson in an upcoming VH1 biopic about the embattled pop star. Alexander, star of the UPN sitcom One on One, will be joined by Eugene Clark (Reversible Errors), who will play Jackson's bodyguard and confidant. An accomplished dancer, Alexander's fleet feet helped land the actor the role. Tentatively titled Family Values, the film is expected to trace Jackson's troubled life from his Motown heyday to his current legal woes. In addition to VH1, the film also will air on Canadian channels the Movie Network and Movie Central. Values is in production in Calgary, Alberta, with Los Angeles-based company Blueprint Entertainment (HR 3/25). Executive produced by Jon Katzman (FX's Redemption), the film will be directed by Allan Moyle (Say Nothing) and written by Claudia Salter (Running Mates).

UPN is looking to repeat the success of spinning off Moesha into The Parkers with a potential spinoff of its comedy One on One. The concept and characters of the new show will be introduced in an episode of One on One later this season that will serve as a backdoor pilot for a new series targeted for fall. The One on One spinoff episode will feature Flex Washington's (Flex Alexander) barber-to-the-rap-stars brother, Kevin Barnes, returning to Baltimore in hopes of taking over their father's barbershop, Phat Head, only to find out that Flex has already sold it to a major corporation.
