Even the best filmmakers in history take big, ambitious swings and completely miss the mark at times. In the case of Brian De Palma – the supremely talented New Hollywood director behind such all-time great classics as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, and more – many consider his most glaring cinematic blemish to be tone deaf adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities in 1990. However, if general moviegoers and De Palma fans knew about the crushing production woes relating to the ending of his uneven 1998 crime thriller Snake Eyes, perhaps they’d reassess their opinion.
Indeed, the original ending of Snake Eyes is so drastically different than what transpires at the end of the theatrical cut that it’s nearly impossible to judge the movie’s intentional merits versus the final product. Of course, the grand irony about the brutally botched ending of Snake Eyes is...

Los Angeles, Feb 15 (Ians) Actress Kate Hudson has revealed that her appearance in ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, which released in 1992, still pays her residuals, even if she’s only earning a dime.
Kate was speaking on her podcast Sibling Revelry, hosted with her brother, Oliver Hudson, reports deadline.com.
During a conversation on her podcast, Kate discussed her credits with Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, and Andy Lawrence.
“I still get residuals from ‘Home Alone 2’ because I sang in the chorus,” Kate said, referencing the scene where Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister ruins a school Christmas pageant.
“I’m in that chorus, and then I get 10 cents every once in a while.”
Joey Lawrence knows the feeling.
“Sometimes I’ll get, like, 2 cents and I’m like, ‘Wait. Doesn’t the envelope and paper cost more?’”
The Christmas comedy film is directed by Chris Columbus.

Home Alone star Catherine O’Hara is opening up about one of the longest-running questions surrounding the hit movie.
If you forgot, the Schitt’s Creek actress played Macaulay Culkin‘s mom in the franchise. That means that her character lived in the iconic Home Alone house.
There have been a lot of questions about the home over the years, especially after a recent analysis revealed that it would have cost a sizeable fortune.
People now wonder how the fictional McCallister family afforded the home, and Catherine had a few theories.
Keep reading to find out more…
Speaking to People, Catherine hypothesized that her onscreen husband Peter (played by John Heard), “had his own religion.”
She joked that the “Church of the McCallisters” allowed them to amass the funds necessary to buy the house. Her other theory: “Maybe he inherited it… they inherited it.”
“I thought the house was pretty amazing,” Catherine added.

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the creature feature C.H.U.D. (watch it Here), which is best remembered for its title – which stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers – and for its cast, which included John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, and Kim Griest, with appearances by Jon Polito, Jay Thomas, and John Goodman. To celebrate C.H.U.D.‘s big anniversary, the folks at Dread Central decided to ask Goodman about the film – and found that he was quite happy to reminisce about his experience working with the cannibalistic humanoids!
Goodman said, “I am definitely in C.H.U.D. I’m from St. Louis and I moved to New York in ’75 to do theater and I wanted to do film. I knew if I didn’t go and try to do films, I would kick myself for the rest of my life. C.H.U.D. was made by a lot of the guys I was...

Through its six-season run, classic HBO drama The Sopranos featured several unexpected cameos from real life celebrities. These included: director Jon Favreau, actor Ben Kingsley, and most hilariously: New York Jets head coach Eric “Man-genius” Mangini.
Of all the celebrity cameos on The Sopranos, however, none hit quite as hard as actress Annette Bening’s brief appearance in the season 5 episode “The Test Dream.” Bening, who is one of the most accomplished performers of her era, kindly stopped by to film a couple of scenes for the 20-minute dream sequence that Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) experiences for much of the episode’s runtime. It’s such a bold, out of left field casting decision that even nearly 20 years later it still stands out.
Bening talked about filming the episode with The Daily Beast in 2020, saying:

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

A burning question surrounding the 1990 Christmas classic “Home Alone” has finally been answered by economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Just how rich is the McCallister family? It’s a question The New York Times now has an answer to as the Federal Reserves has determined Kevin MCallister’s family is in the one percent of Chicago residents based on the value of their home.
Per The Times: “In 1990, the house was affordable only for the top 1 percent of Chicago household incomes, and that would still be the case today, according to economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago…the home would have been affordable to a household with an income of $305,000 in 1990.”
So there you have it. Peter (John Heard) and Kate McCallister (Catherine O’Hara) would’ve been earning at least $305,000 annually in 1990 to afford the house, which is located on the North shore of Chicago.

While they’ve already been popular since their initial release, Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation seem to have gotten more intensely popular over the years. Every Christmas, channels broadcast the classics on repeat and streaming services offer them and other popular holiday films to view with family and friends. Now that nostalgia is lucrative, many new products have been released to merchandise on the movies’ continued rampant popularity. Nowadays, fans also love to analyze details they’ve never fully picked up on before and discuss the semantics of plot elements.
A recent slew of online jokes inquire about how rich Kevin McCallister’s family actually is. The home from Home Alone is extravagant for a suburban household and displays a certain sense of luxury. Plotwise, it has to be the perfect target for burglars as well as provide room and resources for all of Kevin’s traps.

How Wealthy Were the McCallisters in ‘Home Alone’? The Federal Reserve Says They’re in the 1 Percent
It’s been 33 years since Home Alone was released on the big screen, and fans are just now getting an answer to an age-old question: How wealthy was the McCallister family?
Not only did the famous movie family — Peter (John Heard) and Kate McCallister (Catherine O’Hara) and their five children, including Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) — live in quite a large home, but they were also headed out on a trip to Paris in the 1990 film.
So The New York Times decided to get to the bottom of it, working with three economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago — Max Gillet, Cindy Hull and Thomas Walstrum.
Since the McCallisters’ home is an actual real-world property in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka, the economists were able to compare data from household incomes in the Chicago area in the 1990s, the house’s property value and mortgage rates, as well as taxes and insurance.

Sadly, he passed away in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the first Sharknado, and so far celebrations have included a screening on legendary movie host Joe Bob Briggs’ Shudder series The Last Drive-In and an all-day Sharknado franchise marathon on Syfy. A decade after it became an unexpected smash on the SyFy Channel, spawning a low-budget B-movie franchise in the process, Sharknado — in which Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and John Heard battle a tornado that sucks up great whites and hammerheads and spits them out over Los Angeles — is about to hit cinemas for the very first time as part of a two-day 10th anniversary celebration.
And to help promote the return of its most famous creation, producers at The Asylum have, not unlike in their infamous slate of so-called mockbuster titles, turned to the current movie-of-the-moment for some inspiration. In an alternative special poster revealed exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Sharknado is given a Barbie twist, with Barbie seen driving her pink convertible into a pink hurricane flinging killer sharks (some pink) from the sky, and Ken wielding a chainsaw. It’s unlikely this came with any approval from Mattel.

Martin Scorsese was at a crossroads in 1985. The King of Comedy had tanked at the box office, and Paramount had recently pulled the plug on his passion project, The Last Temptation of Christ, weeks before production was set to begin. So when the script for After Hours came across his desk via actor-producer Griffin Dunne and producer Amy Robinson, who had appeared in Mean Streets, Scorsese jumped at the chance to helm a small-scale, low-budget black comedy set in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.
After Hours comes full circle by opening and closing at the workplace of bored data entry drone Paul Hackett (Dunne). In between, Paul’s nightmarish nightlong odyssey sees him repeatedly returning to the same handful of locations and oddball individuals, spiraling ever deeper into an infernal realm of anxiety, paranoia, and free-floating guilt. In this regard, the film shares themes and motifs with other titles...

Artist Jim Shaw’s studio is a dream factory. It’s where images and ideas combine in unnatural and often surreal ways, conjuring visual puns like the smiling visage of Esther Williams superimposed with an image of her lover, actor Jeff Chandler, wearing a gown. A matching piece shows Chandler with a hermaphroditic image of Williams in the pose of Botticelli’s Venus de Milo. Both pieces were inspired by rumors that Williams ended their affair upon learning Chandler was a transvestite.

A viral video has highlighted a brief Home Alone moment that answers a burning question about the film.
With Christmas just days away, many are re-watching the festive film, which became a family favourite after being released in 1990.
The film follows the escapades of Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) who is left behind by his family when they travel to Paris for Christmas.
While he’s home alone, Kevin must contend with two bumbling burglers who attempt to rob the house, believing it to be empty.
A recurring question when people watch the film is: how exactly do two parents completely forget about their child?
For instance, there would be several moments before being sat on the plane when you would realise your son is not with you.
In the film, the family is forced to rush to airport as their alarm doesn’t go off in the morning.
As everybody is getting into the taxis,...

Bill Treusch, a longtime New York talent manager who once served as personal assistant to Montgomery Clift and went on help guide the careers of Sissy Spacek, Christopher Walken, Tom Hulce, Diane Keaton, Eric Roberts, Tom Berenger and numerous others, died Tuesday in New York City following a lengthy illness. He was 80.
Following his stint as Clift’s personal assistant, Treusch became a theatrical talent agent with Dudley Field Malone. He joined the casting office of Marion Dougherty where he worked with casting agents Juliet Taylor, Wallis Nicita, and Gretchen Rennell.
Although Dougherty believed Treusch was unsuited to casting, she recognized his eye for talent. Settled into Dougherty’s basement office, Treusch flourished and eventually founded his own one-man operation that evolved into Bill Treusch Management, a leading management company.

Bill Treusch, the admired New York-based talent manager who jump-started the career of Sissy Spacek and represented Christopher Walken, Diane Keaton, Viggo Mortensen, Richard Jenkins and many others during his five-decade career, has died. He was 80.
Treusch died Tuesday in New York after a long illness, his niece Shannon Treusch, founder and partner of the public relations firm Falco Ink., announced.
Treusch got his big break when legendary casting director Marion Dougherty recognized his eye for talent and gave him an office in her basement at East 30th Street in Manhattan. There, he launched Bill Treusch & Associates, later known as Bill Treusch Management. (The story is told in the 2012 documentary Casting By, directed by Tom Donahue.)

It’s never a bad time for a scary movie. And Amazon Prime Video has some of the very best scary movies to watch. Jonathan Demme’s Oscar-sweeping masterpiece is just as potent and terrifying today as it was in 1991. In this adaptation of Thomas Harris’ best-selling novel, Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee who is recruited to interface with Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a serial killer who holds vital clues to a new case involving the abduction of a senator’s daughter.

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Ivan Passer’s superb coda to the ’60s counterculture generation now enjoys a formidable reputation; this new Fun City Editions release packs it with terrific extras. It may have the best performances by top stars John Heard, Jeff Bridges and Lisa Eichhorn. Disaffected 30-somethings in Santa Barbara investigate a murder and then try to blackmail a corporate CEO. Heard is the maimed, one-eyed veteran already judged unstable, Bridges the yacht bum who gets by on his good looks, and Eichhorn the most forlorn woman of the early ’80s, looking for a reason to give a damn about something. Jordan Cronenweth’s cinematography and Jack Nitzsche’s music track couldn’t be bettered; the movie deserves the place of honor granted to Easy Rider.

Tony Sirico had a couple of firm rules when it came to his beloved Sopranos character, and he would not compromise. In fact, he was so upset over one word in a script for the HBO classic series that he lobbied for a rare script change.
The fan-favorite actor died Friday. He was 79.
Sirico starred in The Sopranos as “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri, a New Jersey gangster who was as deadly as he was cheap and obnoxious.
On their former popular podcast Talking Sopranos, hosts and show alums Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperioli once talked about Sirico taking issue with a reference to Paulie in season one, episode 11, “Nobody Knows Anything.”
“One of the only times an actor influenced a change in the script, and it wasn’t even their line,” Imperioli began, setting up the moment. “Makazian [John Heard] didn’t like Paulie.

Though the title sounds like an Sctv parody of a Bergman film, Joan Micklin Silver’s dramedy was first released in 1979 as Head Over Heels and was very obviously a romantic comedy. Since the box office was underwhelming, distributors lopped off the original’s happy ending and changed the name. Voila, a more successful film. Go figure. John Heard and Mary Beth Hurt play the on again-off again lovers.

Cohen Film Collection is gearing up for a number of newly restored releases, among them Simon Callow’s 1991 drama “The Ballad of the Sad Café” and a number of Buster Keaton works.
Part of New York-based Cohen Media Group, Cohen Film Collection restores classic films and re-releases them theatrically. It’s vast catalogue includes the Merchant Ivory collection, of which “The Ballad of the Sad Café” is a part.
Based on the 1951 novella by Carson McCullers, the film stars Vanessa Redgrave, Keith Carradine and Rod Steiger.
The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, is currently finishing the restoration of the film, which Cohen Film Group plans to release next year.
“There’s still a number of features to go, so we’re working our way through those, including some of the films set in India, which I’m personally really interested in,” says Tim Lanza, Cohen Film Collection vice president and archivist.

Joan Micklin Silver, who forged her own way as a female director in the 1970s and ’80s and helmed seven features including “Crossing Delancey” and “Hester Street,” died Thursday in Manhattan. She was 85.
Her daughter, Claudia Silver, told the New York Times the cause was vascular dementia.
The 1975 independent film “Hester Street” was the story of a Jewish immigrant couple in the 1890s. The low-budget black and white film, in Yiddish with English subtitles, proved a hard sell to studios, and was eventually financed by her husband, real estate developer Raphael D. Silver. It won rave reviews and earned $5 million at the box office, an impressive amount at the time. The 21-year old Carol Kane was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role as the wife, Gitl.

A “Jacob’s Ladder”-ish paranoid thriller arriving just in time to find conspiracy theories plunked right in the middle of post-election American politics, “Wander” only muddies the water further. This latest collaboration between director April Mullen and writer Tim Doiron offers yet another unpredictable shift, but pushes its idiosyncrasies off a cliff before establishing any narrative terra firma.
There is some pleasure to be had in watching an atypically frenetic Aaron Eckhart as a Ptsd-afflicted loner wading deep into possibly-imagined evildoings in the Southwest, with Tommy Lee Jones and Heather Graham also welcome as two allies. Still, the film’s hyperbolic style and convoluted storytelling tend to exhaust patience rather than build intrigue, making for a muddle whose too-many twists and turns ultimately seem meaningless as well as implausible. Saban Films is releasing the Canadian co-production to American audiences via digital, on demand and available theaters Dec. 4.

One of Tom Hanks’ best movies hits Disney Plus next month.
The Mouse House inherited countless classics from 20th Century Fox to fill their streaming service with, but in many cases, it’s taken some time to clear the rights to get them up on D+. And that’s the way it’s been with 1988’s Big. But the comedy film is now set to finally land on the site next month, as Disney Plus has announced that it’ll be adding the movie to its library in the US on December 4th.
Hanks had already been in hits like Splash and The Money Pit, but Big was a huge turning point for his career at the time, as it was the first occasion that he was noticed by the Academy. His role as Josh Baskin, a 13-year-old who wishes he was big and wakes up looking like he’s...

Ivan Passer, a pioneering filmmaker in the Czech New Wave, a frequent collaborator with the late Milos Forman and the director of the 1981 film “Cutter’s Way,” has died. He was 86.
A friend of the family, Amina Johns, told the Associated Press (via The Washington Post) that Passer died Thursday in Reno, Nevada. Rodney Sumpter, an attorney for Passer, said the director had been dealing with pulmonary issues.
Passer got his start in filmmaking as a co-writer on some of Forman’s films in the ’60s, and he directed his first feature “Intimate Lighting” in 1965. He and Forman were students along with Václav Havel and Jerzy Skolimowski at a boarding school in Prague after WWII. They would later escape Prague to Hollywood just as Russian tanks began invading the region in 1969.

Has it been 35 years since film director Ivan Passer, who died Jan. 9, explained to me why horror movies will never stop getting financed and distributed? “They don’t give their producers any sleepless nights,” the sage Czech maestro quietly, sagely noted, summing up a multitude of film business realities in a simple haiku.
And how many decades ago was it when I was first gripped by Passer’s greatest film, “Cutter’s Way,” a completely uncompromising and richly drawn portrait of young Americans facing down the Masters of War that Bob Dylan sang about?
When did I first marvel at the wit and compassion Passer brought to the screenplays of his great fellow countryman Milos Forman? I saw their unforgettable social satire “The Firemen’s Ball” when it first graced our American shores and scored a best foreign language film nomination in the late ’60s.

Passer was a close friend and collaborator of the late Czech filmmaker Milos Forman. Passer and Forman escaped Prague in 1969 as Russian tanks were advancing, when they pretended to be visiting Austria for the weekend. Though they lacked exit visas, a border guard who was a fan of Forman’s let them cross to safety, Passer told Variety...

However, it seems as though their relatively carefree days are numbered when the owner of a major publishing company buys the paper, leading to more money but even more changes.
