The opening title cards of Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand state that history is written primarily about men and war, while “for the rest of humanity, we must draw our own—often wild—conclusions.” For audiences, it’s a warning of the revisionism to come in this story of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law). It is, though, not a promise of a compelling or invigorating story, because the filmmakers, as intent as they were to play fast and loose in the sandbox of history, hardly explore the motives and emotions that drive Katherine as she balances her fealty to her husband and her friend Anne Askew (Erin Doherty), the famed poet who fought for the cause of English Reformation.
Instead, what follows is an often shapeless and rudderless film, focused mainly on whether or not King Henry trusts Katherine. (Spoiler alert...

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most sarcastic and incredibly humorous celebrities in the entertainment industry holding an inquisitively extensive knowledge of almost everything. In short, he is an impeccably witty genius and faces no problem whatsoever in bringing those very skills to light through his characters on the big screens as well — take his version of Iron Man, for instance.

But while his remarkable performance as the Marvel superhero has launched him to such heights of extraordinary fame that his name is used synonymously with Tony Stark’s, that isn’t the only time he immaculately showcased his brilliant chops. This stands after watching him humiliate Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly in his $524 million Sherlock Holmes — one that would put even Iron Man to shame!

Jude Law has been teasing audiences for decades now. His looks, charm, tenacity, and willingness to channel that success in interesting, unexpected directions have always been admirable. But one of his riskier pivots — perhaps only in retrospect — was David O. Russell’s 2004 ensemble black comedy, “I Heart Huckabees.” Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and many others, the film follows a group of interconnected lives all being investigated by “existential detectives.” Law had admired Russell and, unlike some of Russell’s past players, continues a relationship with the auteur to this day, but knows the film and the process of making it can be viewed with a negative light.
“The experience of making that film was bizarre,” said Law in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “We were all there doing it for nothing, just loving being in each other’s company and playing. I remember fantasizing,...

Jude Law is ready to be challenged by screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes.
Law shared in an interview with Vanity Fair that he is set to work with “Challengers” scribe Kuritzkes on a Mike Nichols-inspired film.
“I’m developing a project with Justin Kuritzkes, who just wrote ‘Challengers,'” Law said. “The thing that bonded us was Mike Nichols. I said, ‘I think this is a Mike Nichols film.’ He was like, ‘Well, you would know.’ He felt the same when he went into ‘Challengers.'”
While Law kept the details of their upcoming project under wraps, he did reveal there would be a “sexual-social intercourse” element, much like in tense love triangle dramedy “Challengers” and late filmmaker Nichols’ famed works. Nichols directed Law in the 2004 romantic quadrangle drama “Closer.”

The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favourite movies. The adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s first Ripley novel is a twisty tale of deception and murder, which features a fantastic ensemble cast, including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jude Law. Every element really came together perfectly, but Jude Law almost didn’t take part as he initially turned down the project.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, Jude Law revealed his fears of being typecast and the terrible advice he received from his agent at the time, which caused him to turn down The Talented Mr. Ripley.
“It’s not something I’ve necessarily ever shed light on before, but it’s certainly something that I’ve become aware of the older I’ve gotten. The reason I had that reaction [to Ripley] had a great deal to do with one of the agents I was with at the time,...

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Jennifer Lopez will be touring this summer after all. And while that’s certainly a crime against Pride Month if not humanity itself, it at least frees up some extra time–and money–to watch some movies. And while 2024 looks to be a rather tepid year for blockbusters, there are still plenty of Don’t-Miss Indies out there ready to crawl into your eyes and ears.

AppleTV+’s The Morning Show is amping up the star power further with the addition of Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard in a major arc across Season 4. She will portray ‘Celine Dumont,’ a savvy operator from a storied European family.
Cotillard joins the ensemble cast which includes Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie.
The Morning Show explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. Season 3 left the fate of Uba once again up in the air after Alex (Aniston) manages to take down Paul Marks (Hamm) by logjamming the sale of Uba to his tech company, Hyperion. But now, it appears Uba will be merging with another media company to keep the network afloat, which could spell layoffs and restructuring to come in Season 4.

As the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival kicks off, IMDb is showcasing two new infographics that offer a unique look at the career of festival co-founder (and film legend), Robert De Niro. Created by Tableau-user Paco Llano and using IMDb movie data, the interactive visualizations display De Niro's acting credits in a "deconstructed filmography."
The charts break down De Niro’s career using design elements to represent different facets of IMDb movie data, including genre, IMDb rating, number of user votes, and more. These are just two of more than 600 infographics and interactive displays created by Tableau users who were encouraged to dive in and experiment with the data, thanks to a partnership between the business intelligence company and IMDb.
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival features the opening night world premiere of the documentary ‘Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.” Also featured are this year are high-profile narrative films like ‘Firebrand,’ starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, and more buzzworthy documentaries such as ‘America's Burning,’ narrated by Michael Douglas, and ‘Avicii - I'm Tim’ about the late DJ.

Robert Downey Jr. might have become one of the most prominent Hollywood stars thanks to his portrayal of Iron Man in the MCU, but he has a plethora of other roles. Apart from the actor’s most ground-breaking performances like that in Oppenheimer, he also starred in spectacular and highly entertaining action flicks like his Sherlock Holmes series — that unfortunately died off after just two movies.

Natalie Portman is an Oscar-winning actress who has been quite prolific throughout her three decade film career, but how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 16 of Portman’s greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Portman made her acting debut when she was just 13-years-old with “Leon: The Professional” (1994), which cast her as a teenager teaming up with a hitman (Jean Reno) to avenge her family’s murder.
Her first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actress for “Closer” (2004). The role of Alice, a stripper dating a writer (Jude Law) in love with another woman (Julia Roberts), brought her a Golden Globe victory, though the Academy went with Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) instead.

It’s two weeks after Elizabeth Debicki attended the Met Gala. She’s now in Los Angeles for Emmy campaigning for her work as Princess Diana on “The Crown.”

We grab a couple of seats in the “Ripley” room. “I’m bummed I couldn’t be in it,” Debicki says of the streamer’s adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” “Not that anyone asked.”
But then she suddenly remembers the Met Gala. “I sat in between Jude Law and Matt Damon,” Debicki says. “At that point, one margarita in, I thought, “Oh, my God. I’m in a Ripley sandwich.”
She did not, however, share her thought with the original “Ripley” actors.

My guest this week is Andrew Scott.
In this episode we dig into Scott’s early start in a cereal commercial and his job in a bizarre supermarket, along with the “empathy game” that is acting, and how it cured him of a childhood speech impediment.
Scott also reveals his profound grief at the recent passing of his beloved mother, the legacy of kindness she left him with and why she was “a total hero”.
In Netflix’s limited series Ripley, Scott plays the titular role of Tom Ripley, a scheming grifter set on inserting himself into the life of rich playboy Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn). Based on the novels by Patricia Highsmith, Anthony Minghella’s 1999 film version, The Talented Mr. Ripley, starred Matt Damon and Jude Law. 2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.

The upcoming Venice Film Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded affair with Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gal Gadot and Ana de Armas among top Hollywood talents likely to be launching high-profile titles from the Lido.
Though festival chief Alberto Barbera has yet to see several submitted works that are likely to make the cut, a clutch of globally buzzy movies have already secured a coveted Venice berth, though some of the more mainstream entries will probably be bowing out-of-competition.
“Joker 2: Folie à Deux,” Todd Phillips’ edgy musical sequel to his 2019 Golden Lion prizewinning “Joker,” starring Gaga and Phoenix, is a competition shoo-in, along with Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic “Maria,” starring Jolie in the title role.

14 years ago, we were all shocked by the new take on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it presented the new vision of our favorite detective and modernized the whole story of his exploits.
Just a year before that the world saw Guy Ritchie’s adaptation, set in the 1890s just like the canon, yet offered a more dynamic narration with lots of action sequences. This movie was received not as positively as the series that aired from 2010 to 2017, however, Reddit’s recent discussion concludes that Ritchie’s version holds up significantly better.
It was Redditor @saylorthrift who started this debate, and their hot takes surprisingly gained large support. Overall, it is stated that the 2009 movie has aged better than Moffat and Gatiss’ show because of its cast, setting, atmosphere, as well as screenplay.

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series based on Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels with Hero Fiennes Tiffin set for the lead role, Variety has learned.
Guy Ritchie is attached to direct and executive produce the eight-episode series. It will be a reunion for Ritchie and Tiffin, who recently worked together on the feature “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” It is also the latest Sherlock Holmes project for Ritchie, as he previously directed two films about the famous detective starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.
“In ‘Young Sherlock’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” said Ritchie. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are back together on film — outside of the “Ocean’s” cinematic universe.
The duo co-star in action-comedy movie “Wolfs,” which is written and directed by Jon Watts. In “Wolfs,” Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. Just another night in the fixer industry, we imagine.
Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan co-star in “Wolfs.”
Both Clooney and Pitt produce the film, as do Watts, Grant Heslov, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dianne McGunigle. Michael Beugg executive produces.
Watts is also making a Steven Spielberg-inspired “Star Wars” series for Disney+ that will star Jude Law. Watts was actually supposed to direct the “Fantastic Four” reboot,...

Eden (formerly known as Origin of the Species) is quickly becoming a highly-anticipated film with its non-stop casting announcement of some of the most popular actors working in the industry now. Directed by Ron Howard from a screenplay by Noah Pink, Eden will be a survival thriller film and while there are reports that say the film is based on a true story what we know for sure is that the film will be trying to “explore the human condition in ways that are unexpected, absurd, humorous, sexy, but above all thrilling and deeply suspenseful.”

Filming began for Eden on November 27, 2023, with most of the production taking place in Queensland, Australia and a small unit filming on the Galápagos Islands.

Sydney Sweeney has had an interesting trajectory in the industry with the actress being one of the most promising among the current bunch of actors in their 20s. Despite her talent and range as an actress that she has proved in projects like Euphoria, Anyone But You, and Immaculate, the actress has been mostly seen as the sexy blonde who frequently goes n*de in most of her projects.

Sweeney has been open about how she is aware of those criticisms, and how her family is okay and comfortable with her going n*de on screen. However, one of the stars from Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan had a contrasting response from her parents about the n*dity in her show.

It was the year when arthouse brains met Hollywood brawn. But what made the last 12 months of the 90s so special? These films tell the story
In 1999, cinemagoers flocked to watch The Talented Mr Ripley, in which Jude Law smoked cigarettes in a lazily buttoned linen shirt. The same year, they could also watch the actor getting a socket stamped into the base of his spine so he could play a video game. In David Cronenberg’s Existenz, Law’s character is fitted with a gnarly looking “UmbyCord” and hooked up to a creepy, pulsing virtual reality game “pod” that mines his nervous system for data as he plays. While plugged in, the player is unable to take stock of the “real” world outside. “You won’t be able to stop yourself, so you might as well enjoy it,” says the game’s creator, a line that feels spookily resonant today.

“Fireband” is a new Brit-produced historical drama feature, directed by Karim Aïnouz, recounting the life of ‘Katherine Parr’, the last wife of ‘Henry VIII’, starring Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan, Ruby Bentall, Bryony Hannah, Sam Riley, and Maia Jemmett, releasing June 14, 2024 in theaters:
“..in ‘Tudor England’, twice married, accomplished, and educated ‘Katherine Parr’ (Vikander), reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical ‘King Henry VIII’ (Law).
“Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as ‘Regent’, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her.
“Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical ‘Protestant’ beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.

A young man on the run from a mob boss lands an unlikely job in a brutally functional love motel and starts a passionate affair with the manager’s wife
As motel names go, it’s certainly more portentous than “Bates”. But destiny of a sort, shaped by class and money and family abuse, is waiting for the hero and heroine of this movie. This is an erotic noir thriller from Karim Aïnouz; a noir lit mostly by bright sunshine, shot with garish glee by Hélène Louvart. It takes place in a brutally functional love motel near the beach in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceará; this is a place from which the couple are fated to be expelled naked, like Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
