The summer movie season could use some help, and Chris Pratt might just be here to save the day. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" actor returns to the silver screen next weekend in "The Garfield Movie," an animated take on Jim Davis' orange, Monday-hating cat. For Sony Pictures, there is one big question; can some of that Pratt magic that made "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion worldwide) such a major hit last year rub off on this one? Even a fraction of that magic would be most welcome here.
"The Garfield Movie" is opening directly against George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." While the animated, family-friendly film would typically have the edge, it looks like "Furiosa" is going to win the weekend in the early going, with an opening between $46.5 and $59 million. But that doesn't mean this cat is out of luck, as Sony...

As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

‘The Garfield Movie’ marks Garfield’s return to the big screen. It travels to the origins of an endearing character, of the classic cat loved by children and adults alike, with just the right dose of laughter and tears.
In ‘The Garfield Movie’, the origins and family of the famous cat are explored, but in a much more respectful way, with nuances that do justice to the original material. We see how the tiny Garfield finds Jon, his master, how he meets his real father again, and how this leads to an adventure trip. The topic is, in reality, sad – the reconciliation of a son with a father he does not know. At certain moments, this works well and is even moving; in others, the need for the gag dilutes the effect. The strangeness of the film consists of the desire to combine a good story with a certain density.

What’s your favorite Pulp Fiction scene? There are so, so many to choose from, but did you know the most complicated (and expensive) scene to shoot was one of the movie’s most celebrated, non-violent moments? Indeed, today we break down the iconic Jack Rabbit Slim’s scene from Quentin Tarantino’s smash 1994 hit- Pulp Fiction. The film follows multiple characters that are seemingly unrelated as their paths intertwine in various ways. At the center of the film is Vincent Vega (John Travolta)- a hitman and enforcer for a local crime boss. Vincent is asked by his employer to take his wife out on the town so she doesn’t get lonely while he’s away on business. Enter Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) as the gorgeous and somewhat mysterious wife.
What ensues is a platonic date that feels like a nice break from the film’s otherwise violent and gritty tone.

When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has preemptively purchased Hit the Gas, a spec script from Chris McCoy for Neal Moritz to produce.
Described as a propulsive thriller, the film’s logline is under wraps. Tania Landau will oversee for Moritz’s Original Film, with Vanessa Joyce overseeing for Paramount. We’re told the script when out last week to studio-based producers, with no attachments. Moritz immediately sparked to the material and got the studio to preempt the script in 24 hours.
A celebrated author named to the Black List of the year’s best unproduced screenplays three times, with Get Back, Good Looking and Good Kids, McCoy wound up directing the latter dramedy starring Nicholas Braun and Zoey Deutch. He’s written for Paramount, Marvel, Disney, Amazon, DreamWorks and Fox and seen his work as an author appear in both The Believer and McSweeney’s. If one was to compare two of the greatest cinematic products of the 1990s, it would be amiss not to elevate Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction to the top of the list. But it was also these two cinematic giants that competed for the Oscars in 1995 with one coming out on top and giving rise to a never-ending debate that rages even 30 years later.

The (Extra Hot) Cannes Hot List: Nic Cage, Kristen Stewart and Paul Rudd Films to Heat up the Market
The Cannes Film Festival is bracing for what could be its most disruptive edition in decades, with freelance festival employees threatening strike action that could derail the opening night ceremony, and the entire French industry on tenterhooks ahead of an expected new wave of #MeToo allegations against some of the country’s biggest stars, including a few with films in competition this year.
Well, at least the market looks promising. Judging by the number and quality of projects pitching at the 2024 Cannes film market (May 14-22), this could be a banner year for the Marché du Film.
“The pre-sales market is back in a big way,” notes Janina Vilsmaier, senior vp of sales and distribution at Protagonist Pictures, whose Cannes slate includes Simon Curtis’ best-agers comedy Encore starring Glenn Close, Jeremy Irons, Henry Winkler, and Don Johnson, and Jimpa, the upcoming feature from Good Luck to You, Leo Grande director...

Chris Pratt had a great 2023 with the gargantuan successes of both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The actor has particularly become very popular in voice acting as his previous animated performances in The Lego Movie, and Onward were also praised. With the Mario movie grossing more than a billion dollars, Pratt is as hot as ever in the industry.
Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the second highest-grossing film of 2023
Pratt is back in another voice role, voicing the beloved Garfield in The Garfield Movie. While there is decent anticipation for the film, fans are unsure as to how the film will turn out. The first reactions of the film have started pouring out on social media and it looks like another winner for Pratt and the team.

Mark Damon, a film producer, sales executive, and spaghetti Western actor, died at 91, representatives for the executive told Deadline on Sunday night.
Damon, born Alan Harris in Chicago, started his career in Hollywood in 1956 after signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. After starring in House of Usher, Damon won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. The film was directed by Roger Corman, who died on Thursday.
Damon would move to Italy and star in films like The Reluctant Saint (1962), The Young Racers (1963), The Shortest Day (1963), Black Sabbath (1963), 100 Horseman (1964), Secret Agent 777 (1965), Dio, Come Ti Amo! (1966) and Johnny Oro (1966).
he first entered the world of independent sales and production in the 1970s while living and working in Italy where he saw a large market of independent international distributors eager for top American movies. He evolved from acting to film production and, in 1977, founded the Producers Sales Organization to sell American films to international distributors.

“Valar Morghulis”, “Say my name”, and “Zed’s dead baby”, all these dialogues make you think of the particular film or series that they are from. In this case, it was Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and, Pulp Fiction respectively. The point is, that dialogues are memorable. Be it a one-liner or even some random nonsense (like Samuel L. Jackson’s “This is some serious gourmet sh*t” from Pulp Fiction), dialogues are important.
A great example of a powerful dialogue from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice “Tell me, do you bleed?”
On the contrary, directors like Denis Villeneuve and George Miller seem to state that dialogues only seem to slow the pacing of a movie. Well, they are right but not in a context that people understand. With great dialogues, the films are often slow and they take time to build these lines with character development. Movies like...

10. Bill Cutting from Gangs of New York (2002)
Authoritarian, ruthless, and cunning, Daniel Day Lewis’ Bill the Butcher stole the screen in Gangs of New York every time he appeared. His presence alone was menacing enough to make people drop on their knees and pray, and his impeccable skills with the knife only added a flair of danger to the man that already embodied it.
9. Nucky Thompson from Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014)
Nucky’s silver tongue and immaculate looks made him into the most charming type of gangster: the one everyone loves. Okay, we all loved the original Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas’ unique vision defined the space opera genre and gave us some epic movies that we will love for years to come. But remember when the Prequel Trilogy came out? Sure, by the time the Revenge of the Sith came out, fans were more satisfied with the story, but do you remember how much hate was directed towards Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when it first came out? And it wasn’t just Jar-Jar Binks that people hated – it was the whole concept and many parts of the story.
Yours truly personally liked the Prequel Trilogy and we on Fiction Horizon are quite happy with how well the three movies aged, as fans have been starting to appreciate these movies more and more in recent years, especially after Disney’s Sequel Trilogy. In light of that, Variety...

When “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” debuted on May 19, 1999, few movies before (or since) were greeted with more fevered anticipation. Not only was the movie the first new “Star Wars” movie in a generation, but it was touted as the first of a prequel trilogy charting the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Knight fated to turn to the dark side as Darth Vader.
Despite the breathless build up, by the end of that summer, the near-universal consensus was that “The Phantom Menace” was, at best, a colossal disappointment and, at worst, a calamitous embarrassment. Some blamed the decision by George Lucas — directing for the first time since 1977’s “A New Hope” — to start the story with a precocious 9-year-old Anakin (Jake Lloyd). Others railed against the slapstick antics and pidgin English of Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), hyped as the first-ever CG main character in a live-action movie.

When a public figure promises to do something, there’s no way they can let it go and not be reminded of their own words by the crowd. That’s why it’s so hard for the celebrities to lie about their lives: everything is compromised.

No man is an island. As much as we hate to admit it, sometimes, no one gets anywhere in life without someone believing in them. The same is true for Hollywood. It takes the stars aligning (pun intended) for any success story for anyone to really make it, and especially to escape the shadow of how they may be initially perceived.
There may be no better example of that than Mr. Channing Tatum. He told GQ in 2009, “I got crazy lucky. Like, sometimes I think I won the lottery or something. I don’t really know how I got here. But I just keep moving forward, and it just keeps getting better and better.” Had the stars aligned differently, he could have been just an exotic dancer and never entered the public consciousness. Or just a model. Or just played a jock. Or just played generic romantic leads. Or just played generic action roles.

Glen Powell is a worker. He’s currently on an early 2000s Colin Ferrell/Samuel L. Jackson/Morgan Freeman run where he’s seemingly in everything. The breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, who has two movies coming out this summer — Hit Man and Twisters — was also recently reported to join Margaret Qualley and Ed Harris in the thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford. Plus, he has stated that he and his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney are currently looking for more projects to star in after they capitalized on their on-set romance speculation.
The Hollywood Reporter is now confirming that Powell is in talks to star in the next movie from sci-fi blockbuster director J.J. Abrams. According to THR, no deal has yet to be made and there is no word on what the plot will be. However, it is also reported that this film will...

Pedro Pascal has become a household name thanks to projects like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us. But how much has his net worth increased after becoming one of Hollywood’s top stars?
Pedro Pascal’s current net worth Pedro Pascal | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Pascal is currently worth $10 million. It was a fortune that, on the surface, he seemed to accumulate relatively quickly after his breakthrough Game of Thrones role. But his rise to success was a long and slow process.
He’d already been a presence in Hollywood in the 90s, having done bit parts in small shows like Buffy and The Good Wife. There was a point where Pascal’s good friend Sarah Paulson even paid him personally to keep his acting aspirations alive.
It’s unclear how much he earned during his brief time on Game of Thrones. But the...

Before he made the disastrous Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher helmed the summer blockbuster film A Time to Kill starring Matthew McConaughey. Cinema is replete with all kinds of onscreen deaths, including the unforeseen ones, which serve either to terrify the unexpecting audience or for comic relief. Sometimes even when everything seems safe and quiet, the filmmakers kill their characters all of a sudden to our shock.
Here are 5 of the most unforgettable examples of such deaths, chosen by Redditors. Heavy spoiler alert, obviously!
1.The Departed (2006) - Billy (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Presumably, this one comes first to mind when we’re talking about jaw-dropping movie killings. The thriller’s finale promised a fair ending when DiCaprio’s character catches Matt Damon’s bad guy Colin and prepares to bring justice to him, but he gets suddenly shot by Colin’s friend with his brains left on the back of the elevator wall.
2. The Big Lebowski (1998) - Donny (Steve Buscemi)
Even the Donny actor confessed that this very onscreen demise is his favorite one.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka the MCU, has been struggling at the box office for the past few years, especially after Avengers: Endgame. The MCU movie featured Brie Larson once again as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Besides Larson, the movie had Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. Kevin Costner is heavily into Western drama when he’s not doing his sports drama films. The actor headlined Taylor Sheridan’s series set in a Montana ranch, Yellowstone. He’s also currently working on his two-part dream Western project, Horizon. The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Snakes on a Plane was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

Cocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. There has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen.
