Charmed (1998)
Charmed is Charming
I somewhat enjoy the show although I am a bit tired of watching children playing parts. It seems they should use adults(40 and over) to create a show that isn't based on clichés and the idea of a show with people with experience in life instead of boundless lack of intellect would be refreshing. These people are actors fine, but they can't possibly provide anything short of sophomoric entertainment for their age group. Intelligence and humor go well together, but other than the fact that children are stars in this show, it is fine.
References are basically important in a television program, but of late most of the new television shows have people under 30 playing parts and if not for the scripts, they would be clueless to many of the concepts they exhibit. Most of them weren't even alive when Bewitched was around. Note too that Bewitched wasn't a cast of teenagers and young adults and it had appeal to people who could relate to many issues today. I have found watching interviews with the cast of Charmed that most of the stars are not very intelligent, have no concept of reality, and I am not even sure if they know who the first President of the United States was. I guess being an actor you don't need to be smart, just be a good actor and convince people you are not a moron. So many rich actors are about as bright as a rock. Don't believe me, watch an interview on you-tube sometime of any actor of your choice and see for yourself.
Education has no place in television and some movies. I make a few exceptions like Dwayne Johnson (The Rock). Even those with degrees remind of old blonde jokes. They simply do poorly on quiz shows and you would be surprised just how really dumb these folks are. They are rich, so they don't care about intelligence or the ability to communicate in a complicated world. Just my opinion, nothing more.
Up in Smoke (1978)
A laugh a minute and close to a comic classic
Cheech and Chong have a flair for slapstick outrageous comedy. Their every move and statement had just enough to keep anyone with a sense of humor going throughout the movie. It is one of the few movies they did that kept me focused throughout without any problem. It is amazing how well everything was so well directed, played and carried out. Even with the obvious drug-infested scenarios, it still had all the basics of great laughs and didn't make me want to go out and buy a brick of marijuana. Stacy Keach did exceptionally well as the fall-guy to Cheech and Chong's outlandish antics. Just when you thought the movie would slow down it only got better by the second. Unfortunately, subsequent sequels to Up In Smoke were no where near the quality and rib-splitting humor, they have proved themselves to have an uncanny talent to bring about a ton of laughs. I would watch it anytime over and over and still maintain the same enjoyment in watching this movie. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to watch a movie that simply entertains. The music is quite good too. This movie will most likely make the list of comedy greats not unlike Young Frankenstein. It is really a work of whimsical proportions.
Lightspeed (2006)
Stan Lee has too much free time
Lightspeed is about a superhero, not unlike the excellent TV super hero, Flash, but with a lot less "flash". Python, his nemesis has great makeup, terrible lines and not a great super villain, who provides the typical strains of a bad guy gone rampant. Lightspeed is one of the worst movies I have had the displeasure of watching since Alien Apocalypse. Mr. Lee is one person I have the greatest respect for, especially with his Spiderman and Hulk movies showing some excitement, but Lightspeed is a dud at best. I had trouble watching the poor acting, and the actor, Connery, although Sean Connery's son and a good actor, just couldn't make this movie click for me. The plot was typical and droll, and the imagination of the special defects ( I mean effects) are silly and graphically lacking anything close to exciting. I would think Stan Lee could have done more with it and maybe have done a remake of Flash with a bit more flair and improved special effects, a plot, and better acting. All in all, Lightspeed is not worth watching a second time. Stick to Who Wants to be a Superhero, this movie is not even laughable, but leaves one to only groan and remain disappointed.
Dinotopia (2002)
A really cute concept
Considering the number of ideas incorporated in making of prehistoric movies with cavemen, dinosaurs, and travel back in time, Dinotopia brings on a refreshing new twist.
My thoughts on this movie can only see it as a vehicle to good family fun. It has reasonably good acting, graphics are great, and special effects are above average. I would recommend this movie to anyone having a desire to enjoy a simply fun movie with enjoyable twists.
Nothing about the film is boring and borders on hysterical. It is a good movie for all ages and the lack of sexual undertones and violence gives the movie a refreshing alternative to otherwise destructive mediums.
I believe it is worth the time to see and let the good times roll. It may not be the best movie in the world, but is most certainly is not the worst, and I would recommend it any and all to watch.
Spaceballs (1987)
Spaceballs in retrospect
I think Mel Brooks did a wonderful job on this spoof. Of course John Candy was marvelous in the show as he was in all his portrayals in other great comedies. It is a journey into any sci-fi fan's view to see something familiar and twisted with the genius of Mel Brooks' unending rib -tickling approach to a parody.
I would have loved to been in the movie just to see the actors work their way to looking serious while doing the most preposterous twisting of Star Wars. I recommend the film to anyone with even a wisp of humor. I enjoyed Mel Brooks' films like Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein, whereby he has mastered the fine art of parody and spoofing of classic movies.
I foresee the next generation getting the same enjoyment out of this film and any film Mel Brooks has even touch on. I would have liked to have seen a sequel, which I feel could have been equally good.
My thanks to Mel Brooks, and all the producers and directors who have made it possible to laugh at the ridiculous and sublime antics of movies remade to show the funny side of great movies.
My hat is off to the Mel Brooks, and I hope some day I can meet him before he moves on to the hereafter.....What a guy ha ha....Keep 'em laughing Mel!!!!!
A Place in the Sun (1951)
A place in the sun comment
I was actually surprised to some degree at the verdict at the end of the movie, but then I could accept it after thinking over the entire movie. It was a gripping movie I found fascinating and it most certainly kept me glued to my seat. It did tickle me to see that Raymond Burr again portrayed a legal beagle...I think he must have had a desire to be an attorney had he not become an actor. It is conceivable that much thought went into the cast of this movie. Elizabeth Taylor actually did a fine job for her young age. My overall view of the story and plot is that this movie was outstanding, but disappointing in terms of the ending. I would have liked to seen an alternate ending. Unfortunately, the film industry didn't have the concept of alternate endings in the 40s and 50s. Can you imagine? I would say that is the reason for Remakes, but that, too, doesn't always make for a better movie, but with few exceptions some have been improved. I hope to encounter another movie as exciting and suspenseful as this one was.
