The Buccaneers (2023)
Seemed fun, actually miserable...
I started off rooting for everyone and by the end of the season I despise just about everyone. This turned into such an unfortunate soap opera. I came into it not knowing anything about the story, but have always been a fan of period dramas. This takes drama to a whole new level. There's just so much angst and awfulness. I guess I was hoping for more Jane Austen style goodness, but this was just misery with one terrible decision made after another. Not having read the book or seen the former series I don't know of it's true to the story. I didn't mind the modern flair or colorblind casting (as others have remarked, taking a page out of the Bridgerton playbook), it just has very heavy themes. If you're looking for a lighthearted show with a happily ever after, this may not be for you. It's unlikely I will bother with a second season.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Best Paranormal Romance I've Seen!
This show is everything you could want from a paranormal romance. It's by far my favorite vampire show I've watched and gives the viewer excellent doses of romance, mystery, intrigue, great interpersonal relationships and character development. I truly loved it! None of the teen drama that you get with Vampire Diaries. Grown people who fight fiercely for the love they've found. I also really appreciated that it wasn't overly explicit as so many shows today are. The romance and violence were tastefully portrayed and not overly graphic for shock factor. I love how much history is woven in, too. Such a great show! I'm gushing a little bit, but seriously, the only thing I disliked about this series was the fact that it ended much too soon. I'm still hoping they'll come to their senses and either continue the show or do a spin-off with some of the fan-favorite characters (Gallowglass for example!). A girl can hope. 🤞🏻
Schmigadoon! (2021)
Broadway Brilliance
I really enjoyed season one. Brigadoon is one of my favorite movies, love the Rogers & Hammerstein musicals, lots of fun and feel goodery all around.
SEASON 2 IS AMAZING!!!! The music in season 2 is next level genius. How the writer wove so many musicals of the 60s & 70s together was truly incredible. My hubby and I watched season two in two evenings and I have been listening to the soundtrack non-stop. I can't wait to see where they take it in season 3!!
Definitely recommend for anyone that likes musicals. Season 2 showcases the sounds of Pippin, Chicago, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, Hair, Burt Bacharach, and more. It's a veritable feast for the ears!
What's Love Got to Do with It? (2022)
Underwhelming
I really liked the premise, but it falls rather flat for a romcom. When a movie has more than its fair share of romantic angst and seemingly unrequited love, the emotional payout needs to really be something special. Unfortunately, this movie had a very small modicum of happily ever after that no where near made up for all the heartache. Guess I'm just a hopeful romantic who craves grand declarations of love. This was definitely more of a whisper.
While I didn't love the way they wrote the romance part, the examination of all types of love within a family was conveyed very nicely. The acting was also excellent across the board.
Persuasion (2022)
Not bad, but not exactly good either
I found this adaptation to be a bit "meh". I liked that they tried to introduce more humor and that Anne had a somewhat less miserable life than depicted in other versions, but alas, there was much excluded from this film that I think makes Persuasion a compelling story. I will say that for the most part, the acting is great and the scenery is beautiful. My friend and I watched it together as we are both avid Austen fans, and it did promote much discussion and comparison with previous adaptations, as well as the Austen world in general which made for a compelling evening. However, for those who are very rigid on having historical and/or literary accuracy and traditional Austen language, this may not be your cup of proverbial tea. We'll probably give it another go in a few years, but isn't a version we're eager to work into our regular Austen lineup for ladies night.
Bridgerton (2020)
Started strong, writers bungle season 2
I loved season one. Watched it twice in a row I loved it so much. Thought they did a great job and actually improved on the book. Season two, unfortunately, did not. Kate and Anthony's story is by far the best of the novels - the main reason being because it is FUNNY! I was looking forward to season two the most because of this, and while I don't mind the overall massive rewrite and plot changes they added, the writers didn't include any of the funny bits that make this book enjoyable and endearing. (And what a missed opportunity for character growth on the practically non-existent library storm scene!) The show on its own is very well done and the acting is excellent, I just hate when screen writers of book adaptations try to "beef up" the drama and, in so doing, remove all the goodness that made romance readers fall in love with the story in the first place.
Fantasy Island (2021)
Loving the fresh new take
I absolutely love this show! One of my absolute favorites that I look forward to week after week. I honestly can't understand all the negative reviews. This show has real heart. I've laughed and cried with the characters along the way. It takes real life difficulties and makes both the situations and the people better. In a world of so much heavy drama, violence, and smut on TV, this is the breath of fresh air my soul has been craving.
**Just found out this show has been cancelled and I'm devastated. I seriously have the kiss of death. If I love it, it gets cancelled. 😭😭😭
