The Year of Spectacular Men (2017)
I totally recommend it...
Okay, I realize this isn't a classic and I understand why many people didn't like it, since at the end of the day it's all about taste. What I don't understand is, why are there so many low ratings when it's clear that the movie fulfilled its purpose. I rated it so high compared to most people because it was lovely and I think the overall rating doesn't do it justice. Furthermore I like these kinds of movies that follow somebody's journey through life, especially when they are at a low point. And this one really didn't disappoint me. We watched our young protagonist deal with pretty much everyday problems of a woman. I mean I get why for some people this would be kind of boring since more or less we deal with things like that in real life, but that's exactly one of the reasons I liked it. It's painfully realistic and it seems to me that it comes from a place of love for one's family and anguish for what's gonna come next. It isn't your typical comedy, but it made me laugh, it made me cry, and I'll admit it was kind of awkward at times. But hey, isn't that life?
Truth or Dare (2018)
It gives you exactly what it promises...
Before watching this movie, I scrolled through some of the reviews here and I've got to tell you, they made me even more curious about it. I mean people are kind of harsh, or at least it seems to me that way. Don't get me wrong, as a huge horror movies' fan I can list all the things that could've been different in this, in order for it to be scary/ -ier or anything else. I don't think that's the point though... Sure I would like to see less predictable jump scares, less cliches about the characters or the relationships between them, more suspense on the events happening and better dialog in order for the viewer to get a better sense of the game and the situation going on... Sure I would like all those things in every movie I watch... Except no, not every movie I watch. There are some movies I choose to see exactly for the same reasons I chose to see this one. It lacks many of the elements that make a good scary horror film, thus it lacks the complexity and the weight that they usually leave you with. I don't really think the point of watching this movie is getting scared. Why watch it then? Pass the time with something that makes you leave all logic behind and kind of enjoy it. I don't think I would actually recommend this to someone, but I also wouldn't say it was a complete loss of my time. I mean what do you expect? The plot is about a group of young people getting unlucky and trying to escape the situation. Sound familiar?
Before Midnight (2013)
So realistically good, it hurts!
I, personally, am from Greece, so I was curious to see how they would introduce Greek people and our culture. I have to say I am very happy with the result. Even though it's the third movie, they managed to keep it interesting, with smart dialogues still not missing from the script. It was really fascinating how they inserted Greek habits and parts of everyday life, without it seeming forced or unnecessary. I really liked how they presented the different ideas of love in each movie. "Before Sunrise" showing us young, innocent love, "Before Sunset" displaying the difficulties you face as an adult being confused about what you really want for your love life, and finally "Before Midnight". In this film they successfully introduce to the viewer the phase in two people's lives, where they have settled down and try to deal with some of the problems a married couple with kids could encounter. The lead actors had great on-screen chemistry once again, achieving to realistically present us these situations. Overall, I believe that it's a smart, entertaining movie with so much to offer. I truly recommend it.
