Votamos (2021)
Gets nowhere
The film just felt pointless and a little bit cawardly. It just throws a bunch of arguyments but doesnt commit to an argument and just takes the easy way out.
The performances were all pretty good and I liked the use of the one shot technique since it gave the whole argument more urgency and it put us straigfht into the mind of the main character.
But at the end of the day it all feels like it went nowhere. What were they trying to achive with this short? I dont think this helps the conversation in any way and it isnt that great on a technical aspect to justify its existance. Its all just kindof there.
The Green Mile (1999)
A good film elevated by an incredible finale and a great cast
The Green Mile is one of those movies that can connect with you very easily, you just have to let yourself get absorbed by its world. Sadly for me, no matter how hard I tried I simply couldn't be fully immersed in it.
It doesn't have that much things going for it from the start. 3 hours is a long time and with this movie it feels like half an hour or more could've been cut, specially since the main conflict doesn't really start until almost an hour into the movie. Is at that moment that you'll either get completely sucked in or totally taken out of the film.
The score by Thomas Newman isn't always on point and its not helped by the fact that movie is all over the place during two thirds of its runtime. Goes from almost a feel good movie, to pretty much a tragedy. The cinematography isn't that inspired and the editing may be a little to slow for some.
Both Tom Hanks and the late Michael Clarke Duncan give knockout performances and are perfectly casted. Problem is, they're pretty much the only fleshed out characters in the movie. You cant really feel how it affects the people around them and that makes some of the performances during one of the final scenes difficult to buy. Its a story only about the two of them but the movie frequently tries to also make it about the world around them and end ups failing at both. That doesn't hurt the finale that much, which absolutely nails the message of the film and will keep you thinking about it for a while.
Its predictable and the obvious religious theme may not be for everyone, but its still a very enjoyable movie.
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
An OK love letter to film
There's really not a lot in this movie that impressed me. The movie is decent and the final act is fantastic. But aside from that you wont find anything that will totally blow you away. Not a single scene, shot or piece of soundtrack will make you think "Ive never seen that before". If you enjoy making films then you will find yourself identified with this, but that doesn't make it a masterpiece like everyone says it does.
The relationship between Alfredo and the boy never feels natural. He didn't seem to teach him that much or show him a lot of appreciation, yet we are told that they love each other. All the other relationships in the movie are the exact same, never quite completed. The good soundtrack and some very good scenes make up for all the dullness enough to give it a 6.
So if you say this is one of your favorites movies Im fine with that, but you shouldn't really call it a great movie. OK and enjoyable at times, but nothing else.
Synecdoche, New York (2008)
This is a movie about you
Synecdoche is the kind of movie that will absolutely divide audiences. Some will think its a masterpiece, some will think is a pretentious mess. For the better or the worse (depending on whose reading this) Im on the first group.
This is by far the best film Kauffman ever wrote and it's only fitting that he directed it. A movie that will haunt you on every decision that you make and you'll realize that you're not as different from the rest as you may think. Whats the movie about? Its hard to describe. You could say its about a man who, over the years, is trying to make his ultimate masterpiece in theatre. But that just an understatement of what happens after the initial problem is presented.
This movie is ultimately about life, about decisions, about the way we see the world. Is it depressing? Kind off, but that's no the intention.
This movie shows you that every human is a lot more complex that what you think, everyone's got their own story. If you think you cant relate to the characters here, just ask yourself a couple of questions: When was the last time you made a mistake that didn't have an effect until years later? Have you ever been so focused on what you were doing that you didn't notice everything bad around you? Do you sometimes think something happened a couple of months ago when it actually happened years ago?
There's no need to touch on cinematography, score, sound or production design, they work. This movie is about its characters, every single one is worth studying. The cast does a fantastic job on making them feel normal. Even with their obvious flaws they make you realize that they are like someone you know. But the movie wont give you easy answers on anything. You'll have to see this multiple times to truly comprehend everything that there is to understand about them.
