Absolutely Horrible
10 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I made the mistake of seeing this crap because I thought it was going to be a hilarious escape movie. The reasons it was so bad are many and other people have listed them here. But the main reason is that Ben Stillers character was such a self-centered, unlikable jerk. He usually plays a loser, but ultimately a likable loser that you want to root for. Here he's a lying, misogynistic pig of a man who treats others with complete disregard. I absolutely hated him. And the twist at the end just makes you want to see him get tortured for being such an a-hole. Horrible, horrible movie.

Please do yourself a favor and skip this one. Trust me, if you've seen the previews you've seen the only mildly funny parts.

Flawed but good
22 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I can't decide if I'm glad I saw it or not. The movie had many flaws that others here have mentioned: Chopppy editing, an ending that dragged out far too long, Sharon Stone in a embarrassingly obvious fat suit, and seriously: What happened to Ben Fosters character?

SPOILER ALERT!

But the relationship between Justin Timberlakes and Anton Yelchins characters was absolutely heartbreaking. I almost had to walk out of the theater during the climax because it was so gut-wrenching to watch that terrified boy reaching out for comfort to the one who was killing him. That was maybe the most intense scene I've ever watched. I am so mad at Justin Timberlakes character for not saving him, because you know he cared about the kid and wanted to help him, but couldn't find the strength of character to do so.

I am also a little mad at Mr. Cassavetes for not making this into the great movie it should have been. There was so much great acting and the story was Hollywood gold, but then he goes and throws in something so amateur all of a sudden, like the Kung Fu fight scene. What was that? Ben Foster couldn't defend himself very well while being thrown out of his bosses office, yet suddenly he's Bruce Lee. (And being attacked by a bunch of Asian guys to boot.) Lame.

I guess I "liked" it, but it's hard to think fondly about something that is haunting me so much.
