Alive (2023)
Just Bad.
There are a few redeeming factors. The colours used made it feel apocalyptic and gritty. About 5% of the shots and camera angles were pretty good so there is potential for the folks that made it. All the shots were in focus so that's a bonus I suppose. And I suppose its a zombie apocalypse film so that's always fun.
The acting however was dreadful. None of it was believable and interaction sounded fake and forced. Even the zombies. I turned it off at one point but figured, I'd started now, I may as well finish it. Even if it's just to laugh at how dreadful the interactions were between the characters.
There wasn't any creative camera shots or well done special effects. Even the cuts to the News looked outdated.
If you want to watch something to laugh at how bad it is or to teach you how not to act OR how not to make a decent film, watch this.
Otherwise, just don't start.
Dear Edward (2023)
Absolutely Emotionally Destroyed Me!
Not what I was expecting at all!
I had a free trial of Apple TV and saw this pop up. And thought 'meh, let's give it a go!'
Firstly, the first 2 or so episodes had me in tears. It's kind of a thing that's been done before in films like Crash, Disconnect to name a few where total strangers stories interconnect through a certain event. In this series, its a plane crash.
Audio, camera work and everything on a technical level was perfect! The acting was phenomenal from everyone! And watching the story unfold from everyone's different perspective was great.
Edwards story, being the only survivor was incredibly moving, watching the young actor portray losing his entire close family and in particular, his brother was absolutely devastating to watch. I really enjoyed his friendship with Shay, tough girl looking out for broken scrawny kid has been done a lot but it was still a sweet part of the show.
I haven't yet read the book but will be doing so in the very near future so I can't comment on changes from the source material.
For now I will just say it was amazing and if you're considering watching it I'd say make sure you have a lot of comfort food handy of have a heart of stone 😅
Finding Eden (2017)
Glad it was free. Wouldn't pay to watch it.
Just another B movie with non believable and fairly flat interactions between the actors. Better acting than some of these horror / thriller B movies but not by much.
Credit where its due, it had some nice camera shots (although theres a lot of shakey camera work) and the audio was pretty good. However still came across like an amateurish student film. Some shots dragged a bit and overall pretty boring. Even some of the action and kills come across dull and boring because they weren't shot in a very exciting manner.
I have to say my biggest bug bear was the aspect ratio it was shot in. It wasn't good and looked strange or stretched or something.
Storyline was pretty obvious and the flashbacks were a tad overused with some not very effective.
Probably a 4.5/10. Being generous because I like the post apocalyptic genre.
Dead Still (2014)
It's meant to be a comedy, Right?
Acting was so bad that I found it funny. I've watched a lot of B movie horrors but for sheer dreadful acting. This one tops the league. The professor was particularly hilarious with the over the top acting and the complete sudden change in mood and emotion.
For a film about photography too, there were a lot of shots that were over exposed. Sound work seems a little off too. The speech is tinny.
Storyline could have been great but it just didn't cut it. Even the sfx were pretty dire in the death scenes.
The son is very pretty for a boy. They put far too much makeup on him.
I'm not sure what more there is to say.
Super 8 (2011)
Definitely a Super Film!
I absolutely loved this film! I don't know if it's because I love all things 80's. How good the chemistry and friendship came across between the 4 main young actors. The creepy and pretty well done alien or the fact that it's essentially a love letter to most Steven Spielberg movies with a bit of Stephen King in there.
Also loved the fact they were filming a movie within a movie!
It felt like a combo of E. T., Stand By Me, IT and Stranger Things but obviously this was pre Stranger Things. So if you love any of those films / Series, you'll love this!
The overall flow of the film was perfect with parts of the mystery being unveiled at just the right time.
The only reason I gave it a 9/10 is because I felt the performances from both Ron Eldard and Kyle Chandler was pretty weak but I've never thought Kyle Chandler was very good at acting. Ron Eldard could have toned things down a bit. It felt like he was overacting.
Other than that, it's a fantastic family watch maybe for kids 10+ though.
The Chosen One (2023)
Very Good watch!
I really enjoyed this series even though I found it a bit preachy at times.
I watched this not knowing anything about it. It started off very mysterious when it came to Jodie and how he got his powers but that only kept me more curious and gripped wanting to know more!
I thought the first episode however felt just like it was attempting to be another 'Stand By Me' in the way the kids were being directed which isn't the worst thing but just felt a bit unoriginal but I suppose it managed to show you the relationships between the characters.
Absolutely loved the twist at the end but would love a second season to show us what happened after Jodie left his mother and what led upto the attack on the holy lands depicted at the very end.
Brightburn (2019)
TAKE THE WORLD!!!
This film was absolutely twisted and sadistic in the best possible way! I frickin loved it!
Okay, it felt a bit rushed but the glass in the eye scene had me hiding my own and the rest of the kills are literally gore galore. Absolutely perfect when your in the mood for that type of film although it's probably not gonna appeal to everyone.
I really liked how he left the 'B' Symbol at all of his kills which is a trait used by fictional and non-fictional serial killers.
I think the only thing I found was how rushed it felt as he was developing his powers. I felt they could have built on that a bit more and more gradually find out what he's capable of.
Still loved it though and hope their is going to be more of this cos it's just dark af!
Shallow Hal (2001)
Overall OK.
This film annoyed me a bit a it still implies that a stick skinny, size zero woman is still more beautiful than a larger woman.
The concept was there but it still misses the point.
Bigger women are still beautiful as they are. But it just fails to actually deliver that message. Despite that presumably being the message / goal they were trying to put across.
That aside, there were some lovely moments and it had a fantastic soundtrack which helped gain points from me. Acting overall was spot on but that's to be expected from a cast that has been in the game as long as they have.
To summarise, okay ish shallow, meh, kind of entertainment with a few good laughs, brilliant soundtrack but wouldn't be of any use to teach a shallow teen lad the lesson it was trying to deliver.
Der kommer en dag (2016)
That was difficult to watch. But. . .
The overall subject matter is somewhat difficult to approach but this was very well delivered and incredibly acted by all.
Despite the troubling subjects. The film is well paced and keeps you gripped throughout. Guides you nicely to an understanding what's going on without being too blatant on screen which hits you emotionally like a tonne of bricks and adds to the hatred you feel towards the oppressors.
You also really route for the boys to find an escape even if their were a couple of failed attempts.
It is awful to think that so many had to put up with the abuse these evil people dished out.
Humans really can be evil.
12 and Holding (2005)
Wow! I was not expecting that!
Just wow!
Incredible acting all round! There were some really small details that some have picked up on that were slightly irritating but it didn't take away from the extreme storylines the 3 main characters face.
It's an intense viewing but well worth it!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Something great is coming next!
I'm not sure how so many people have rated this film so poorly!? The visual effects were brilliant, acting was phenomenal.
Here's a bit of info: There are going to be more films in the series!
Whilst I'd agree that there was a lot of information to take in throughout and a few characters not completely explained within this film itself, I still enjoyed most aspects of it as it left me wanting more and looking forward to the development of other characters as well as really intrigued as to where they will go with the various sub plots introduced throughout the film.
I'd definitely recommend seeing this installment of Fantastic Beasts if you enjoy a good cliffhanger, incredible visuals and special effects.
